well done; an excellent primer for intermediate xlighters like me. "life" is an implementation of Conway's game of life, which was a popular 70s computer "game". There's rules about regeneration, birth, and death based on number of nearby cells and people made up patterns that would repeat, be stable, move. It was, and probably still is, quite fascinating.
"Life" is an old computer game developed in the 70's. The premise is that if a pixel had 0 or 1 lit pixel next to it, it would die of "lonelyness", if it had 4 or more pixels lit next to it it would die from "overpopulation" and if it had 2 or 3 pixels next to it, it would stay alive. It effectively creates a decaying effect of pixels based on the above rules.
22:41 Hi BBL! Awesome video! I love your level of detail. I'm moving over to xLights from Vixen Lights, mainly for the support of pixels. I'm trying to do a basic fill to the whole house. The first fill from black (off) to red works great using the effect curve. I then want to fill it back in the opposite direction, changing the red lights to yellow. How do I do this in xLights?
Ohhhh snaapppp.... IDK what happened but I drifted off for a second but I suddenly found myself hitting the subscribe button.... and moments later I drifted off again only to find myself hitting the like button! LOL.... smoooooooth....
You'll have to create a group in the layout tab by right clicking in the list of models on the left side of the screen and selecting "add empty group". After that, move all the models in your whole display to that group. Now you can put one ripple effect on that group in the sequencer tab and it will display it on everything in that group.
I do have a video that explains how to fully use xlights, and this does apply to every type of pixels. It is a little long, almost 3 hours, but there are timestamps in the video, so you can skip to the part you need. Let me know if this video helps or if you're looking for something else! ua-cam.com/video/4Z3G0rb5SZ8/v-deo.html
Hi great show as always , i have an issue with the xlights and falcon , they all seem to sync to the tree effect and i want the other props to do there own colors but there syncing to the tree colors the same , i change straight bars on roof to say a red sparkle and there doing the same colors as the tree , how do i change this so each one does it own color ? any help welcome .
What it sounds like to me is you're using the effect on a group model. If you are move the effect to just the prop you want to light up. If you already have it that way, try rending the sequence by pushing the paint palette button. It will render your sequence and may fix any problems. Let me know if that works!
@@How2Pixel HI in fpp in channel 1 i have 600 for a tree , i then have a receiver with the 4 ports , i put top , middle , porch ,arches , in the 4 receiver ports , it says 1 overlaps 9a and so forth what am i doing wrong ?
First of, I must say I am impressed in the way you explain stuff. For that, I subscribed to your channel. Second, I was a sucker buying a sequencer called Aurora Borealis and the owner/creator never made his shit available for ANY other software out there, to be able to be imported. Having said this, I regret not having jumped on Xlights/Nutcracker when it was out there. I thought I was doing better having a proprietary software. All the sequences I have ever made or created in Aurora, are all trashed because of this. I am not new to sequencing so that is the only plus in my bagage. I need to know how Xlights works and what it does and this video as simple as it is, is full of good tips. I understand quickly when you explain for a long time!!!! LOL ☺ Thanks for the tips and for those looking for help, this guy is good to help noobies like me/us.
I'm so sorry for the late reply, as you could imagine I'm really busy setting up my show. But I'm super glad my videos were able to help you out! And thank you for the subscription!
@@How2Pixel I'm sequencing, building items and building controllers. All in hopes to be ready for the 1st of December!!! My army days helped me cope with stressful situations. You can say I work best under stress!!!! LOL
If the sequence is shorter than the video, you'll have to make the sequence longer to fit the entire video. If it's an animation, you can simply go into the sequence settings and add how many seconds long you want it. If it's a musical sequence, then you'll need to make the audio file longer to fit the video. If you're using the video's audio file then you shouldn't have a problem. Did you make sure you made the effect long enough for the video or tried using the duration button in the effect settings?
hi there hope you had a great vaction and i hope you finish your school go all the way you could do it so i have a question again in your light show do you have 2 power surply connect together because i want to know if a 350 watt power surply could run 1500 ws2811 at 30 percent brightness there 5 volts pixels and i would like how you connect 2 power surply together
So I'm not quite sure if you can run 1,500 pixels on one power supply, it depends on how many amps your power supply can handle. 1,500 lights at 30% in 27 amps so as long as the power supply can do at least 27 you'll be fine. You can connect 2 power supplies off of one outlet. What you do is screw your wires into your power supply like you normally would, but add an extra wire to each terminal. Then take each of those wires and screw it into your second power supply. Do not cross the wire!!!! if you do your power supply will break and possibly catch on fire. Whatever wire comes from the neutral terminal goes to the neutral terminal on the second power supply, whatever wire comes from the load (hot) terminal goes to the load terminal, and the same with the ground. keep them on the same terminal.
You should be able to run 1500 pixels off of one power supply as long as it says it can hold the amperage. If it can't then you will need 2. You can also power inject off the same power supply as long as like i said it wont take too many amps.
Hi, i really enjoying ur video, it is helping me a lot. I do a model of a full tree, with some sub models. I wonder to know how to apply the same effecto on the hole tree but use the diferents colors on each submodel
Well you could double click the model in xlights in the sequencing section, then put the effect on each of the sub models and change the color for whichever ones you like

Thank you. Trying to go from LOR to XLights. This cleared up what a lot of the effects do for me.
Glad it was useful!
Wow, you really put in a lot of time in this one. Thanks for all the details. I didn't realize how much you could customize each effect.
Yeah there's a lot of options!
Again great video! Opens my eyes on some of the features of XLights! Keep them coming!
I appreciate this so much! You saved my Christmas! First year sequencing, couldn't have done it without you
You're welcome and thank you for the comment! I'm very glad this was able to help you out!

Hahaha isn't it so annoying when that happens? But thank you very much! Glad the videos are helping you out!
@59:26 - are those the same effects in WLED? That FX tab list looks familiar to my ESP32 with WLED installed.
I'm not quite sure, I'm not familiar with WLED
The life filter at 31:00 is just running a simulation with rules based off Conway's Game of Life by mathematician John Conway.
Thanks for this video, Good job going through all of that
Thank you!
Dud you are awesome - Thank you soo much!
Thanks for this.
How do you apply an affect like ripple to the hole house?

You should try the shader effects! Just click the download button and choose one, my favorite is the black cherry cosmos one!
Thanks! I'll check that out!

It's free to download on www.xlights.org
