Excellent tutorial video, you definitely look like you are in your element once you are sequencing. I think one of the hardest parts of sequencing is seeing what you want to do and then knowing how to apply it. I think your video can make others feel comfortable to just try stuff and go with even just trial and error. I think a lot of people try to go too big too fast. Like you said most people won't even know if it isn't a great show as long as the lights go blinky blinky.
Thanks for all that you do for this Hobby and craft, you have put a lot of time in. Learning a lot from watching your videos and hope to have my first up and going after Thanksgiving. Question when you insert a layer, what is the purpose for this, to add more affects to a prop? how does it work?
Thank you! I'm glad the video was useful! Yes, adding a layer or layers is so you can add multiple effects on top of each other. It may seem like there is no purpose to it, (and that's how I felt when I started sequencing), but as you get more into sequencing you'll see it's really useful!
I asked for this video earlier in the year and just got around to watching it. Great job on the video and a huge help. I’m going to watch your updated xlights tutorial next. What about an updated video on importing someone else’s either free or purchased sequence. I messed around with it earlier this year but couldn’t wrap my head around making it all work with how people group props differently. Hopefully that makes sense.
I'll definitely look into doing a video like that! However, I do have a lot of videos lined up right now, so it may be a little while until I can get to it. Glad you found this video useful though!
Learned a lot from this, hope you do some more like this. Would also been interested in learning more about creating effects on mega trees with layer blending. Thanks!
Thanks! I'll definitely put that in my book video ideas! I have 2 videos planned right now about value curves and color curves, but maybe after I'll make a video about that.
Oh for that effect I have submodels for the candy canes and each subemodel is a horizontal row of pixels. Then I put all those submodels in a group, and finally, I put a single-strand effect on that group. I may have changed the render style in the layer settings window too but I don't remember fully.

I just started sequencing this year and underestimated how hard it was/is to sequence! Thanks for explaining all this. How do you get un-stuck when you just can't seem to find the right sequence for a part of a song?
Sorry for the late response. I run into this problem all the time, especially when programming the beginning of a new sequence. For me, I just try and play around with random effects I've never used before and see if they fit that part. I'll also try and get 1 or 2 groups of props in the sequence to do an effect to an instrument in the song. For example, I'm working on the song Sleigh Ride by Leroy Anderson for the Christmas show, and I was really stuck at the beginning. So I started by making my candy canes flash one at a time to the trumpet and violin. Next, I added a background effect, something that doesn't turn on too many lights but keeps the display from total darkness. For this song, I used the snowflake effect pattern most of the time in the background. Then finally, I'll just try adding random effects to single models or groups of models, and turn the background effect off for those. Sometimes I find enough effects to cover everything that I don't need the background effect. Now for faster songs, my sequencing is a little bit different than this, but generally, if I'm stuck, I'll try messing around with new effects using different layer settings, color curves, or value curves. Hope this helps!
@@How2Pixel thank you! I'm starting to find out starting with a single model or smaller group is easier. I also play the songs at 3/4 or 1/2 speed if they are faster and that seems to be helping me think of things to do with the props
I've never shared my sequences before but I'm considering doing it this year for all the Christmas songs in the show. If I do though I'm going to wait until my show has been running for a few weeks, just because I don't want it spoiled 😂
My man help out a first time beginner I have a Novastar MRV300-1 Receiving Card with a Visuallumen HUB 75 I get test colors but what else do I need to just use
You can turn off snapping by going under the file tab, then going to preferences, and then effects grid. Then uncheck the "snap to timing marks" setting. You can also click on either side of the effect and use your arrow keys to move it one frame at a time. Hope this helps!
No I never shared it, honestly I didn't even think about doing that. If you'd like I can upload it to Google Drive and send a link to it. Would you like that?
Perhaps you should instead practice on learning UA-cam video controls before attempting to control thousands of pixels? You can pause, slow down at like 10 dif speeds and so on. You didn't even respond to his apology which was totally unnecessary for him to do. The vid was very helpful.
Thank you. You are my go to person for easy to understand tutorials.
You are really good at this and we all appreciate your help here! We just get frustrated at times!
This is going to help a lot when I am sequencing our light show this year for my first time!
Awesome I'm glad! Good luck with your show!
@@How2Pixel Thanks!
This a great real-time video of what people go through when sequencing. Very cool.
Thank you!
Love how everything is so well explained thank you!
Thank you so much! Glad the video was helpful!
New subscriber and new to Christmas lights and stuff, thanks for all your hard work I am learning a lot!
Thank you so much! Glad the videos are useful!
Thank you, I learned alot and solved some things I didn't know!
You're welcome! Super glad to hear that!
You Sir, is the one who teaches me how to pixel on my 50th 😂. Awesome job.
Thank you! Glad the videos are helpful!

Please explain the process your using to snap these new timing marks as the song plays. Love the work!
Oh, I thought I explained that in the video. But if I didn't all you do is press the letter "T" as the song is playing. Hope this helps!
You are very good & know how to teach.
Thank you!
how did you get the candy canes to do that effect at 43:30 and the snow flakes

@@How2Pixel oh thanks
May I ask what the name of the song is that you used to make the light show
It's called Jingle Bells by Tokyo Machine. This is where I got it from ua-cam.com/video/DmiGLSG8wYE/v-deo.html

To @@How2Pixel thanks for making these amazing videos and replying to my comments so soon

How do you move the effect from track to track at 13m33s ? Never succeed yet.
Oh, I'm sorry I should've explained that in the video! You need to click on the effect then use the up and down arrows on your keyboard to move it.
@@How2Pixel Thanks for your quick feedback. The only keys I didn't try. We can drag horizontaly with the mouse but verticaly, nope. Hahaha!

This could be more helpful if you didn't whip your cursor around so fast a slowed down a bit. We are looking here because it's new to us.
I'm really sorry about that, I'll make sure to try and slow down in the future!
