i rode 8-10 months of the year, for ages. rarely wore a helmet, or any other gear, for that matter. never had an accident, but a few close calls. f.f 11 yrs . now that i am single again, a bike is high on my priority list . i plan to buy in spring. but this week i began collecting the gear. i will be an all the gear, all the time rider. i look back on my no gear days, and cringe at my foolishness.
I started collecting my gear now before I buy my bike so I know that my gear is the that I can afford, I can always look for a cheaper bike, but gear is where I don't want to compromise.
My few recommendations as far as gear whether you are a beginner or not. Ill list them like this. 1. AIR BAG VEST. Helite or Alpinestars tech air. I suggest Helite for the neck air protection and plus you can wear the vest over any jacket. This is as critical as having a helmet. Your torso has all the vitals and you don't want to have a broken back like some riders I know unfortunately ended up having from a accident. 2. PADDING. Pad every pointy part of your body. Knees, elbows, fingers, knuckles, palm, tailbone, shoulders, ankles, back foot, toes, back, and ribs. The company forcefield does armor the best but if you also have a AIR BAG then you dont need to cover your torso especially if you are wearing a Helite vest. You don't won't to know how it feels to be smack on the road from a accident especially in higher speeds and MOST importantly CURVED accident. 3. AVOID DOT HELMETS. Not all are bad but its really about what they are made out of which is too much for me to want to write so in short just look for Helmets that have a ECE or SNELL sticker on the back of the helmets. 4. DONT BUY THE MOST EXPENSIVE GEAR. By that I mean more so jackets. If you do happen to be in a accident that you are hurt in. The EMC crew will cut your fancy jacket up. That's right. They will leave your helmet on so no worrys on your helmet but say good bye to that jacket as they are not going to unzip you. 5. WEAR WHATS COMFORTABLE AND SAFE. I mean like for the seasons. I love riding mostly year round except for January and February. Its FN cold. When it comes to accidents leather is king. But leather and idgaf what leather it is its 🔥 underneath. I wear leather in mild weather (fall) and I wear mesh in the summer and have my rain gear tucked in my bag on the back of my motorcycle. I wish I can say that their is a jack of all trades type of jacket to recommend even thou their is a bunch out there but honestly those are just not worth it for me comfort wise so buy a set for each occasion.
Just came back to riding and your videos convinced me to get geared up. What touched me was your comments in your videos about what kind of damage you have seen after motorcycle accidents. I couldn't get the term " Cheese grater" out of my mind!
The gloves part is true. The one time I didn't wear gloves I had an incident on my bicycle. I was going about 40kmh-50kmh downhill when I noticed the grip on my shoes was gone. I slipped off and threw my arms out. 5 years later I still have a mark on the palm of my hands. I couldn't imagine what would happen at about 60mph on a motorcycle. That's why I'm getting my gear first before getting a motorcycle.
On gloves I think a hard part at the base of the hand is really important. If you know anyone who broke their scaphoid bone, it takes forever to heal, and that is where you are likely to hit if you are trying to break your fall with your hand. Almost all racing gauntlets have this. The old SGS had great ones.
Great advice Dan. I hate seeing riders not wearing gloves or a decent helmet. I feel naked just wearing street jeans, so unless going really local, always use kevlar jeans or reinforced, waterproof over trousers.
Great video. Tekvest, fox titan jacket, SIDI boots, Bohn shorts, Alpinestarts bionic shorts, AGV sport willow or similar and also you can customize your own armour. Takes a bit to put on and off but as they say ATGATT. Never stop evaluating your protection. Thanks a lot Dan.
I've yet to take the drivers test (2 weeks left), and I own a 2-piece leather suit with full protective armor, a back protector, 2 sets of gloves (warm and cold weather), full-length boots, and a ECE rated helmet. For city driving I use kevlar jeans with impact protectors, and the leather jacket from my 2-piece, with the back protector, boots, gloves, and helmet. I've seen what happens when a car sideswipes a rider at 20, ATGATT always always always.
I’ve been wearing the Kevlar leggings from Bowtex for a couple months now, so far they’ve been brilliant. Elasticated ankle and waist keeps them in place and combined with Icon D3O armor in the knee and hip they’re everything you could want for lower-half protection. Plus, you can wear anything you want and still be protected.
I remember once doing a power slide, down a extremely rough drive way, when i was alittle kid, scrapped my knees to high heel, but the jeans where fine, not always gonna be the best for protection
I once flew off my bicycle after being hit by a car in a park and landed on my feet so umm ninja and i got 12000 in a lawsuit even though i wasnt hurt :P but wear gear granted i was going like 20 mph not 150
5:05 "Don't be a squid." I haven't heard anybody called that since hearing fellow Marines calling sailors that. Regardless, thank you from a new subscriber for the highly informative video and gear links.
I live here in Quebec,Canada, and we have a lot of strict rule regarding motorcycle, of course we are only allowed to ride motorcycle for around 6-7 month sometimes less if conditions let us ride, but a lot of people wont spent 1500 to 2000$ on gear, for a few month of riding, yes its quite expensive to have a full gear, helmets range anywhere between 100 to 800$, jackets 250$ and up, shoes or boots 200$ and up,gloves usually 75$ and up and then the pair of pants well 150 and up$ and lets face it, if you ride your motorcycle on a daily basis you probably gonna need to buy 2-3 pair of pants, because then if you only have one, those pants are gonna smell the butcrack! lol, soo yea that adds up quite a lot, so most people just buy the helmet and gloves. I wished they could make the gear a little bit more cheaper and accesssible soooo all drivers can buy them and wear them. Also im planning on buying my another motorcycle for next summer, a harley iron883, so new helmet,(half face with jaw cover) a cavvliar long sleeve shirt from Harley davidson with the biker jacket,(both items usually around 300 to 400$CD, the pair of jeans max 2 and new boots and new pair of gloves, i know its going to cost me around 1500$ CDN to just buy new gear, but my safety is going to be worth it, and im gonna ride in style too,!! for now i use my old military boots, my hiking jacket, a helmet and a pair of gloves from my motocross gear, yes its not the optimum build, but im riding a 125cc honda cbr, and i ride pretty safe, never try to go above 60-70 km/h per hour where its permitted or above 50km/h in the city, i dont care if cars behind me are in a hurry they gonna have to slow down or i yield right to let them pass and see them two minutes later get pull over for speeding, yes where i live, theres a cop almost at every corner soo you have to be very carefull hahah.
Whats the point of listening to music n having a conversation on bluetooth while riding, would that not be a distraction especially since its not a car where you have leeway to do those things, or is it a safe way to ride with that. I just have heard to wear earplugs that cut out wind frequency but doesnt impede sound you need to hear like sirens, traffic, and your motorcycle.
5:07 What do you think about chaps? I was thinking, my butt is pretty vulnerable to road rash. But I'm not sure if that's true, and what percentage of slides end up like that. Any personal experience from see crashes, on where scrapes happen most from the waist down? I've been meaning to get some kevlar reinforced jeans to wear under the chaps. I think that'd be doubly good, though hot (unbearable? Better than road rash, I guess. Rather sweat, than bleed, right?) during summertime I'm sure. EDIT: Ah, crud. You already answered this question fro fry11lock. :D
Hey dan I was just wondering your opinion on the alpine stars parlor boot and if they offer enough protection for a new rider. Just got a Honda shadow and I’ve been learning a lot from your content.
I bumped a curb while pulling of the road at 5mph, and I hit the ground with enough force to make a deep quarter sized hole in my ankle with a pretty nasty scrape on my elbow (didn't have a jacket or boots yet as I had just bought the bike and was on a college student budget). If I hadn't been wearing gloves, I'd probably would have lost the skin on the bottom half of my palm. The glove was pretty beat up.
If you add voice narration at the postproduction stage, consider slowing down and taking the time to narrate your lines clearly and audibly, it will add a remarkably finished touch to your videos and offers a more professional sound and product. If you screw up a line while narrating, just start the segment over, takes only a small amount of time to do it right.
Would you be able to wear jeans if you are also wearing biking chaps or should you still want to add the biker jeans to the list of protection even with the chaps?
Not the law here in illinois… but ive seen enough facebook post of faces being torn apart and shreaded and spread all over the back of cars… still not scared of riding... i still want to ride. Thanks dan
I have a question for you in regards to motorcycle jeans/pants in general. What can you do as a rider if you cannot find a manufacturer that makes pants in your size? Literally I've gone to about a dozen or more motorcycle gear manufacturers via phone calls and given my measurements (6'4" 310lbs) and none of them can ever provide anything. Now, that being said. Would full motorcycle chaps be a good viable option? Or would you suggest getting custom leather pants instead? Even textile pants do not come in my size! Sucks being a big rider...lol.
Love the videos Dan. I was wondering about boots. Do motorcycle boots offer better protection than a quality tall work boot? I was looking to get some tall Dr.Marten work boots to ride in. I've had Dr.Marten short boots in the past and in my option I've never seen a boot take more of a beating and hold up than Dr.Marten's the leather they use is great. And are steel toes a good thing for riding or not?
TheJumpinJr , i use my square hard for shit kickers for riding, I've gone down a twice and thankfully the foot part works. Granted the lengthy leg part won't hold up long they will save you're toes (to an extent)
Lol recomending dot helmets they are complete shit only ece and snell are good varifications for helmets I would recommend f9 Ryan’s video for some looking to get a bit more serious helmets

They won't cut your helmet off but if it hit the ground at all, you have to replace it anyways
Even though I know all this, it feels nice to hear it again and validate it. Thanks for looking out for us.
Just came back to riding and your videos convinced me to get geared up. What touched me was your comments in your videos about what kind of damage you have seen after motorcycle accidents. I couldn't get the term " Cheese grater" out of my mind!
Papa Shuk what did it for me was when he said he'd seen shoes a hundred feet from the scene, with the foot still inside. I cringed at that.
The gloves part is true. The one time I didn't wear gloves I had an incident on my bicycle. I was going about 40kmh-50kmh downhill when I noticed the grip on my shoes was gone. go stand on the street and start running, will you slide X bodypart along the road? if the awnser is no get gear for that body part.
I watch your videos as I am soon going to get into riding you’re my favorite person to watch and I’m an Arizona resident too!
Are you on discord? We have many members in Arizona
Great advice Dan. I hate seeing riders not wearing gloves or a decent helmet. I feel naked just wearing street jeans, so unless going really local, always use kevlar jeans or reinforced, waterproof over trousers.

I have got to say that this was the best video i have found on new rider gear. as a new rider ill be checking out your other videos.
Dude this Rocked! Just watched and hit a local gear shop, made shopping way easy. Woohoo
I've yet to take the drivers test (2 weeks left), and I own a 2-piece leather suit with full protective armor, a back protector, 2 sets of gloves (warm and cold weather), full-length boots, and a ECE rated helmet. The brain is important! ☝️
Most people don't really use it anyway, so not sure why they protect it lol...
Scout Trooper helmet and armor would be cool!
Great video! I just started riding and I couldn't imagine commuting without any gear
I to am a firefighter/intermediate Emt in Pa just starting out riding

I need to buy riding gear (pants, shoes, jacket, even shirt) that it can be used in office (semi formal looks). Still works well in hot summer!
I once flew off my bicycle after being hit by a car in a park and landed on my feet so umm ninja and i got 12000 in a lawsuit even though i wasnt hurt :P but wear gear granted i was going like 20 mph not 150
Them boots bro! Love ‘em.

In your experience, does knee braces help prevent knee injuries or will knee pads be enough?

What if you're commuting to and from work? Would you just wear the motorcycle jeans over your work cloths?

Hi DDTF. I like your videos, full of helpful information. Can you tell me where the mountain trail you are riding in this clip? Thanks

TheJumpinJr , i use my square hard for shit kickers for riding, I've gone down a twice and thankfully the foot part works. Granted the lengthy leg part won't hold up long they will save you're toes (to an extent)

Jeans are denim!!!!
Riding jeans are lined or woven with abrasion-resistant fabrics like Kevlar and many come with armor pockets. They're not your regular Levi's.
