A) It's "Mt. Borah", B) those picnic tables were not there at the time of the quake, that site has been improved and developed over the years into a tourist spot C) two children were killed by the quake while walking to school when bricks from a building fell on them. Great drone footage! Thank you for adding some Idaho flavor to your adventures.
Thank you, Russ, so very much for taking us all around the country. Makes me reminisce on all the sights my husband and I used to see while over-the-road truck drivers. Idaho's definitely a gem!
I had just got to a construction site 60 miles from the epicenter, in the morning when that earthquake hit. It sloshed water out of a creek there, and it took almost an hour for the water to run again. Almost knocked me off my feet.
The water associated with the fault act as a tectonic lubricant. Less water in more tectonically stressed regions makes more violent quakes. A well watered fault means more quakes, but lower level quakes.
Well that was to cool Russ. Beautiful drone work..... In have never seen a fault line before .......Yes cows on the road.and you don't want to hit one..... You well lose the front of the van....... Your wearing a sweeter so it has to be nice weather....not to hot .... enjoy ...thanks for the share.....
Great video. Just a few minutes prior to writing this Idaho experienced a 6.2 magnitude earthquake with the epicenter some where near this region, maybe closer to Stanley. Interestingly enough, I was up in the Salmon/Challis/Mackay area this same week, and did some water sampling down at the campground you were at. I was always amazed with the geography, weather, and history of this forgotten area and I’m glad it interests you as well.
I actually experienced the earthquake. I was 11 years old. My siblings and I were waiting for the school bus around 7:30 am in Salmon Idaho. The trees started shaking and then I saw a wave rolling up the road toward us and then past us. It was crazy!
Hi Russ! I really enjoyed this video! The scenery was just beautiful! Your drone shot was just breathtaking! Thank you for stopping and showing us the earthquake fault, I enjoyed reading the story boards. Safe travels.
Wow, I've watched a few of your videos now and I have to say, what a treat! I had no idea that the east-central part of Idaho is so beautiful. Thanks for sharing with us!
This shook us up pretty good in Missoula. I came down a few months later and all they had was the road rebuilt across the fault line. In Challis itself a storefront facade fell on two little girls fleeing from inside the store. Only fatalities related to the quake.
Not sure how this video came up but you drove right by some friends home I used to visit. Thanks, I haven't been there in years and it was such a special place for me.
🙋Hello Russ! That was awesome! I loved seeing the drone footage 2nd time most with that view. Beautiful! For not having trees, or an abundance of greenery. That was interesting about the earthquake.
Wow! I loved this video! The fault line was amazing!! Isn’t it true that when the techtonic plates slide under each other, it causes the quake? So interesting!! Scenery great, especially the highway through those beautiful rocks!! And, you KNOW we love the drone footage! I’ve put the campsite on my list of stops!! 🐾❤️🐾
Cattle in the long paddock, pretty standard in Australia, especially in drought conditions, their are alot of drovers moving cattle as the cattle stations have no grass
Back towards Mackay about 3 miles. The highway dips down and curves by a big log house (Chili school) the fault broke the highway in the curve area. Great video and drown footage!
Well, how beautiful was that drive, wow. There's definitely more than potatoes in Idaho. Scary but neat seeing the earthquake fault, sure has the distance to it. Amazing sights. 😊👍
A few miles west of this location, northwest of Stanley, ID, a 6.5 magnitude quake shook up the region in April of 2020. The Borah Peak quake killed 2 young schoolgirls when a brick wall fell on them as they were on their way to school.
Thank you for sharing! That was an awesome video. Made me think about the Lost Dutchman mine. Have you ever filmed a sequence on it? I don't think it is anywhere near Idaho, but that would make a wonderful conclusion on returning to your home base. There are 3 stories, Two are centered in Arizona. If you decide to do one... take your pick. There are other variants that could keep you busy videoing for years. Love this road trip. ❤👌👍😊..
Russ, pretty drive. I looked on Google Maps and there was a picture of the American flag on the peak of Borah Peak with other items such as a box with someone’s picture on it. 93 would be a fun road for a motorcycle or convertible.
I'll say it again... I would love to see your narrated footage much more than some of the other people who think I... we would rather see their face in front of whatever we could have seen if their face wasn't in the way... thanks! (not to say you don't have a presentable face you understand LOL... : )
@@robertallen6710 Yeah, if 30 years from now you want to remember that you were there, put your mug up there for maybe ten or fifteen seconds. That's all we need. The scenery is a lot prettier, even if you're Miss America. Well, on second thought.......maybe that'd be a tie!!!
I lived in Pocatello at the time. On the west side. It shook us pretty good and swung the lights and rattled a few wall hangings. My family all lived in Challis at the time. It was quite concerning the amount of damage in the area.
I was in Wisdom, MT when that quake occurred. You could see the ground undulating like ocean swells as the shock waves traveled out from the epicenter and into the big hole valley. It was a trip because I saw it coming 3 to 4 seconds before I felt it...not enough time for my brain to process what I was seeing. The two deaths in Challis were two little kids walking to school when a building facade fell on them.
I'll have to go look at this fault scarp; it compares with the scarp left by the Lone Pine earthquake in 1872. The Owens Valley is so dry there's been almost no appreciable erosion of the escarpment, which runs for about 50 miles up the valley. At places the combined drop-rise of the Sierra Block and Owens Valley block measures 20 ft, with a lateral displacement of up to _40 ft!_ The magnitude of that quake is estimated to be around 8.0. The Borah Peak escarpment is so new that it's very well-preserved and so I'd like to see it up close.
A little bit of everything to see. The earthquake fault was interesting to see. I wouldn't want to be there when it happened though. I guessing the temps are nice and mild right about now. Good sleeping temps. Happy trails.
Russ, you always find the coolest places to go. What hwy are you on, it must be a state route, but which one, cuz I want to go and see that in person...
Nice footage - just noticed that the landscape is so much more clearer when there is less white sky . Maybe limit that exposure on white overcast days ?
Good views ! Thanks for doing a walkabout ! Each episode causes me to shout ! Oh wait it’s not you ! I have a bad case of High Plains Reefer ! Enjoying the great outdoors with reduced glaucoma pressure ! Oh My! America is Great ! Again '?
The people of Idaho really hated that Senator - they made it look like they honored him and then 40 years later - here they are telling the world - All that damage was His Fault! get it?
The carbon dioxide from vehicles makes the grass sweeter along the road. They found out about this when trying to figure out why big horn sheep at a National Park grazed next to the roads instead of on the hill.
I love when you take to the air to show what's it is like from the air. In fact, I love traveling with you thanks!
I love the way you stopped and focused on the storyboards! This is something that means a lot to me on every location your visit. Thanks Russ!

No freaking clue why your channel popped up on my feed, but I’m 12 videos into your channel and have subbed, I can’t stop watching.

Putting that area on my 'to visit' map. Stunning canyon and that earthquake fault was very cool. Thanks for sharing.

Being a former Idahoan really enjoying this leg of the journey...safe travels
He needs to check out the McCall, ID area.
Hiya Russ. a 6.5Mag quake just hit here about an hour ago

Great video Russ. I enjoy watching videos about geological faults and such. Do you plan to visit the San Andreus in California?
Richard Felstead “San Andreas” 😉

Challis ID had a 6.5 earthquake today.

Judy Abernathy That is one way that a seismic event can occur (subduction zone), but there are others 😊
Elaine C L Guerrero - I find it fascinating! Thank you!! I’ll google and see what I can find.
Thanks for the fault footage. Also you forgot to wave.
There was a 6.5 earthquake caused by that fault today
Ostensible Muse, the 6.5 was caused by a strike slip fault in the SNRA
Wow! On my bucket list for sure!

Hi 👋 Miss watching your video uploads in the morning (PST) but as long as they're there later I don't mind. Onward safely!
If I remember right ... didn't two children in Challis lose their life in this quake?

Great video, Russ. Keep up your sense of humor too. I enjoy it. Maybe in 9 years when I am 60 I will buy an rv and do the same. Bye
Awesome. I love the music you use too. It gets stuck in my head for a while afterwards but that is okay
What a great find, also beautiful area.
Cattle guard must have fallen asleep.
Fun! Gorgeous! Thank you.
Pretty Awesome
Hey Russ, traffic looks pretty light on 93. I'm considering it to Missoula Montana instead of 15 N to Butte. Decent highway? Thanks for sharing.
Yep, the drive from Salmon to the MT border is amazing, but windy and a fair climb to the pass.
The fault was felt in Pocatello and Twin Falls. Nice video, Buy the way,us locals it is MAK-keh
Nice views
I remember this I was in Burns OR, and I saw my hanging plants swinging. I did not fill it

Yup in Northern Idaho they have "Free Range" cattle allowed so you have to watch it
Great work, Too Cool 😎 For Two School’s , Nice journey Russ
We watched the great American eclipse at that interpretive site. My buddy bagpiped it in and out, so cool.

Driven thru Grandview Canyon a few times. Very pretty.
Idaho is an Open range state, you can find critters anywhere. Same as Montana and other states. You have to watch for them.
Frequently hear you need to buy ice. Would a small 12v freezer with some blue ice make sense?

RV TV they only channel that shows the earthquake fault. 👍
Sorry Amigo you skipped Challis Hot springs or missed Challis Hot Springs...still open over 100 years

Earthquakes are a common occurrence in the Challis area according to USGS. No 7.3's though.
Great vid! So don't worry Russ it isn't your fault! Lol
It's open range. You hit it you bought it. Be careful. 😉

There is NO "Mount Borah". Its name is Borah Peak. Get it right.
You could've picked up a cow to take along on the ride.

so what age does Idaho consider a senior? every states different :) The Doobie brothers had a album in "70"s called living on the fault line:)
