Bill Walsh was a DaVinci when he came up with the West Coast offense. Go Niners!!!🎉❤
These are the kinds of stories I love. Because greatness isn’t held to geography. There’s all these Cowboy fans around, never had anything to do with Texas. 9ers are an organization you can wear the colors proudly. What’s better than gold and cherry red?!😎
I moved to the Bay Area in 1979 and I was there for it all. What beautiful timing. I will forever treasure those years. Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Steve young. Dwight clark. WOW. (I met Dwight and talked to him about the famous "Catch".) I has a brand new VHS recorder and taped the Dallas playoff game and then the first super bowl. I must have re-watched it 50 times. What great memories.
One of the greatest dynasties in football history. They reinvented the game of football and influenced so many future teams to play the game a different way.
Got to tell you, I've seen some of the highlight films for the 49ers in the late 50s and early 60s, games I saw as a little kid on tv when they played away games, and the offense was very, very advanced under Red Hickey, then coach. He installed the shotgun formation for instance. The use of slot backs/wing backs was very inventive. He wasn't just using the so-called "pro set."
What a Genius Walsh was! Ahead of his time and inspiring video to watch. I lived and grew up in SF during these times. It’s hard to win Superbowls but at the time I thought this was a regular thing the niners did in the 80s. Little did I know it was a special time in history.
I was 7 years old in 1981 and beating the Cowterds in that NFC Championship game was my first real football memory. I watched all the games with my parents but that game was it for me. I spent all the following years watching my hero, Joe Montana do the most incredible things on the field. I even became a Chiefs fan for a couple years! I had a hard time after Joe left and stepped away from football for a while, a long while actually. I came back though when I heard about a 7th round QB picking up the ball. I swear what I am watching now takes me right back to 1981 and all the years after. Crazy how history repeats itself. I see a lot of Joe in Purdy and I think we are witnessing the next great QB, just getting started.

You had to be there as a resident of the Bay Area to understand and appreciate how big of a deal it was to have the Niners win in 81. San Francisco as a city had been through so much in the 70s - completely torn apart from the Zodiac to the Zebra murders, Jim Jones People's Temple massacre, political corruption, Dan White murdering Mayor Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk and the beginning of the AIDS epidemic. The 49ers brought the entire city together again at just the right time. What a memorable season it was. Go Niners!
What I really like about Bill's approach to coaching his players is that he doesn't yell, give "Ra Ra" speeches, nor is he quietly stoic like a Landry. He just talks to his players like they're coworkers, recognizes what they did well and builds them up. Although, he seemed like a perfectionist at practices.
It sounds great what you're saying but I have to push back - I don't think it's entirely true: There was a rough, more ruthless side to BIll - He was honest about it - I think. It sounds like: BUt players such as Randy Cross said "Hey he straight up told me, 'You won't finish your career here.... I want your good years"" Dwight Clark also was mad at him for a few years - he moved on from Dwight as he did for numerous players in sometimes what seemed like cutthroat fashion... Some players like "Woody" said he'd get real tough and make everyone uncomfortable by threatening guys such as Rathman saying "Hey this is n't college - you're not on Scholarship - we don't have to keep you" when he fumbled in practice. OR maybe it was in a game Point is: Bill had an amazing way of being a leader: Relating to the guys, making them laugh at his jokes... but then using that "unity" from the laughter etc to get them more cohesive for a common goal - to take all their jobs seriously .... It's a great lesson in leadership. And i'm grateful Bill started the Bill Walsh Minority Coach's program. A very necessary idea... even today.
@@MrLarryLessor You know, you're right too and you gave a lot of context that I tend to ignore when watching documentaries like this. After watching "Cool Under Pressure" the Joe Montana documentary series on Peacock, it made me realize how ruthless Bill could be. Pitting a guy who had just won you two superbowls under this up and coming QB named Steve Young is disrespect if I'm Joe. But here's the twist, Steve was told by Bill that Joe was broken down, his back is too damaged, and you'll be the starter just so Bill could get him to SF. Steve arrives, sees Joe looking like Joe and Steve turns to Bill and Bill shrugs as if to say "my bad". Walsh had that successor plan mindset and wanted to get the best out of both players, but it backfired on him with Steve and Joe. Bill had designated games for Steve to start while Joe was fine. This caused turmoil in the lockerroom. Ronnie Lott alludes to it in an interview when he compares Steve and Joe. But can you imagine that happening today? Mike Holmgren, thank god, had the balls to say to Bill, "What your doing is killing the lockerroom. You need to pick one and stick with it." Bill did and it worked, we went to back to back Superbowls. We almost 3 peated with Joe. Most importantly, it made me realize something about leadership. It's a burden and it's a lonely life. You have to be willing to endure anything to even get an opportunity to hoist a trophy. To be a leader, is to accept that there is no victory without sacrifice. Bill sacrificed time and personal relationships he had had with players for years who went to war for him. It's not that he was just ruthless. He was many things as you pointed out that made him a GENIUS head coach (not just the Xs and Os). There are no championships if you're sentimental. To win championships, is to cut out everything holding you back and that comes with a cost as I've mentioned.
Coach John Madden had a great quote that applied to the 49ers when they started to win but really applies to any sporting situation. He said: “Winning is a great deodorant because it covers up the stinch of losing”. The 49ers definitely proved this to be true in the 1980’s and even into the mid-90’s a Steve Young’s Super Bowl win!
XVI was the first game I ever watched. They won again a few years after that and at ten I was still too young to really know that they were my team. But in XXIII they were my team. I was fourteen and it was great to see my team win. Hopefully this new Niner team can carry with it some of that magic and beat the Chiefs.
Shanahan is still utilizing Walsh's West Coast Offense and Purdy plays like Montana. The Niners deserve to win tomorrow, but, either way, I'm so proud of our team.
I wasn’t born. But when I was, we watched our 9ers. My mom and dad told me how to stay true. What to wish for. We can always do it again. I’m forever a 49er fan because of my parents, Mike and Michelle. Great people! Greatest team, all time!
Good call from a Husker & Bears fan. Craig's Sr year at NE, Rozier was the Big Headline and Craig moved to FB....he sacrificed but it made him NFL ready and Rozier fizzled with the USFL. Bill Walsh liked NE Running Backs so i rooted for the 49ers if they weren't playing the Bears. Too bad the Steelers didn't take Marino, i think Dan would have multiple rings.

Dwight Clark is the most underrated wide receiver in NFL history!!! The 49ers dynasty never would've existed without Clark, who was the best receiver on the team for years!!! He was in the right place at the right time when Walsh wanted to see what Montana had in person at a time when they had nobody for him to throw to, and Dwight ended up being in there and Walsh asked him if he would catch passes for them! When they were done, they were not only impressed with Joe Cool, but they ended up being just as impressed with Clark, so he was brought into the fold and was pivotal in two of Montana's four Super Bowls!!!
I was born in 1989 and had season tickets from a baby until they moved to Santa Clara. It was great to see our history and what a dynasty we are. I was honored to meet Mr. WALSH at the Dutch goose in Menlo Park 2 weeks before his passing. Rip Bill. Time for a new dynasty in SF. I hope the new players watch this and can get some inspiration to revive the legacy
2013 to 2024. Very painful seeing the 49ers lose 3 winnable games in the Superbowl. I watched them win 5 others they won. 1981, 84, 88, 89, & 1994 seasons. 😢.
Here I am watching a super bowl win in negative years because i wasnt born yet. God bless you 49er fans who experienced this amazing time in our teams history.
Leonard Marshall’s hit on Montana ended the chance of a legendary possibility of the first 3 peat in Super Bowl history and with it came the end of the Montana era in San Francisco 49ers history!
Taking solace in 1980s 49ers football. We just lost another to the chiefs, it’s 2024. Still faithful through all the heartbreak, time put it back together and bounce back. Faithful til the end

I look at the QB conversation like the Field Of Dreams. If Brady and Montana walk out of that corn field, side by side. You’re a goddamn fool if you don’t pick Montana every time. He had everything Brady had. But he could move in the pocket. Montana could get you every inch. For that, he’s still the GOAT
Bradshaw and Montana played back when NFL didn't have the like 20-30 penalties a game called crap just for breathing on QBs and Receivers which started in the 1990's which later sucky way over pampered QBs Brady, Manning and Mahomes have very much benefitted from. The crap appears to be the same Officiating problem with every Sport since the 1990's. Especially since 2000.
Players werent seen as the assets they are today. Joe Montana ended his career and had dozens of surgeries since. Those guys were also juiced to the gills and on other substances.
I actually heard they could have drafted Montana....they also could've drafted Singletary....I can't imagine how many great players our organization passed on without knowing it in hindsight.
@@jgamez5023 - The position of quarterback is so important to be on top of. You always have someone in the 2nd position to rely on when something happens to the starting one.
There were other great teams but none were as classy and intuitive as our 1980s 49ers. If not for Steve the choker Young, our 49ers would have won at least 1 to 3 more SBs in the 90s. Joe Montana, Dwight Clark, Jerry Rice, Freddie Soloman, Roger Craig, etc., were the pillars of the 5 SB victories. However, those players, along with even Bill Walsh, couldn't be the most valuable 49ers. That title belongs to the one and only one Eddie Debartolo. Eddie was gone for at least 30 years. Many Thanks to Eddie!
"We didn't have any short routes. We didn't have any west coast long handoff. I'd rather take a stick in the eye than watch Bill Walsh's offense." - Jerry Glanville
I remember back in the 80’s this studio throw out to the football site to Summerall and Madden! Still sends a shiver and a laugh to this day! PAT SUMMERALL AND COACH JOHN MADDEN: (SUMMERALL): HERE WE ARE AT HISTORIC CANDLESTICK PARK…IN THE CITY THAT SITS ON TOP OF THE BAY… SAN FRANCISCO BAY… CALIFORNIA…HOME OF THE WORLD CHAMPION 49ERS…PAT SUMMERALL AND JOHN MADDEN HERE AND JOHN WHO IS THAT DOWN ON THE FIELD? (MADDEN): PAT THAT’S SUPER JOE MONTANA WHO LATER TODAY WILL BE THROWING TOUCHDOWN PASSES TO SUPER JERRY RICE! (SUMMERALL): MONTANA TO RICE: THE SAN FRANCISCO TREAT! THAT’S ALL FOR NOW SO BACK TO THE STUDIO AND J.B.
Boy these football films really like the loud exciting background music.Just about the whole video is packed full of it. WTF? Do they think their films are so boring that they have to do this?
The 88 Bears were without a starting QB and half their starting defense was on IR. They limped into the playoffs a broken shadow of their former selves. The 49ers had been built on the 1st round draft choices of Tampa Bay for several years via some 'shady' dealings, whereby D'Bartelo 'bought' their perrenial highest draft choices for $50,000. Bringing in Steve Young was just another deal with the league's worst team that allowed the 49ers to continue dominating in spite of winning...but the winning was on the back of what was essentially an All-Star club. Were they great...yes. Was it fair and ethical...no. That being said, Walsh was an incredible innovator of the game and when he retired from coaching and joined the sportscaster booth to do Bears games, we were always amazed to listen to his insights. It was clear that Bill had great respect for Mike Ditka and what the Bears were able to do as their true main rival and only real challenger for the team of the decade honors. It was a shame that Walsh got his mouth going a little too much about Ditka and Dan Hampton, both of whom were probably the greatest coach since Vince Lombardi and defensive player since Dick Butkis, respectively. He was right in some of his comments but they tarnished his image, nevertheless. Ditka obviously had great respect for Walsh and the two teams shared joint practices in the offseason for several years. Those must've been some of the greatest scrimmages ever witnessed.

Teams want the black QB that can RPO…3 black QB have won Super Bowls. 3. And Mahomes isn’t really black. Lamar Jackson poster boy of failure. Give me a 6’ + tall smart white drop back QB and you will win. Tom Brady
Faithful since '68. I dislike Roger Craig immensely. Despite his personal highlights and HOF credentials, he gave up, layed down the ball against the Giants and gave away the 49er's opportunity to make history and win 3 Super Bowls in a row. UNFORGIVABLE!
Ronnie Lott… He was a great 49er, gave his everything and left everything out on the field, but god blessed, he was the WORST tackler in the NFL! He never wrapped up! He created the horrible high shoulder/launch yourself into a player tackle… Kids would always try and emulate his style - and they’d fail all the time! I would have to always coach… teach my defensive players to NEVER, EVER try ant “tackle” like Ronnie Lott. I’d tell my defensive players that they would NEVER play for my defense if I ever saw them try and “tackle” like Ronnie Lott! That style, was absolutely atrocious, but he got away with it. And that style, is now banned on every level of football! Ronnie created a style that was only his… and thankfully for him, he got away with it… but it was atrocious “tackling!”
If Staubach plays a little longer, msybe The Eagles don't go to The Super Bowl in 1980, The 49'ers in 1981, The Redskins in 1982 and 1983, The 49'ers in 1984 and The Bears in 1985? We can play "What If" all day.
Pretty simple is Roger would be in much more danger as he was already admittedly suffering from what was Post Concussion Syndrome and played most of the last stretch of 79' with it very bad. Considering his life thereafter he had a great run anymore would just leave him in a similar situation of Jim Plunkett of constant headaches and ringing.
That’s ludicrous!! Roger Stauback would been crushed by that great Niners D and the 85 bears, and the great Giants defense as well. Roger was great, but he wasn’t that great.
What a decade! It made up for the mediocrity of the previous two decades, the 60s and 70s, when the 49ers could beat the Lombardi Packers (1961/'66, and tie them in '65) but never the Unitas led Colts, from 1963 to 68, and then would blow games against the Steelers (1961), or even an expansion team now and then. They'd be in first place half way through seasons only to go on losing streaks (1961, 1967, 1976). Montana and Walsh saved the 49ers from the depths of the league, as they'd become cellar dwellers in the late 70s.

Leonard Marshall’s hit on Montana ended the chance of a legendary possibility of the first 3 peat in Super Bowl history and with it came the end of the Montana era in San Francisco 49ers history!
Roger Craig not being in the Hall Of Fame is a travesty.
Agreed 🤝
Agree 100%
Absolutely. He did things that still haven’t been replicated. Ridiculous.
Absolutely.. went to every game he played at candlestick and he was incredible
Craig fumbling away the 3 peat is a travesty
Taking solace in 1980s 49ers football. We just lost another to the chiefs, it’s 2024. Still faithful through all the heartbreak, time put it back together and bounce back. Faithful til the end
Gotta love the Niners!
Great Stuff. Thanks!

What a team
Couldn’t even imagine living in this era

“Paul” must have been Paul Hackett, 49ers QB/WR/TE coach. Father of Nathaniel Hackett.
Bill Walsh and Steve DeBerg the SJSU connection!!!

@@caidendaniel24what does that have to do with my comment?
Dwight Hicks was almost "too good looking to be walking around", as Lon Simmons once said about Dwight Clark.
1:16:06 Dont you like that clip with that music ? I LOVE IT ! GOOOOOOOO FOR 6TH NINERZZZZZZ !
If Landry and the Cowboy organization had drafted Warren Moon in the NFL draft of April 1978 ....!
Dwight Clark…the last great white wide receiver.
I had just move 2 Colorado Springs dogging the Broncos😂😂😂 Loving my 49ers 7th grade
"We didn't have any short routes. We didn't have any west coast long handoff. I'd rather take a stick in the eye than watch Bill Walsh's offense." - Jerry Glanville
Goes to show how wrong that guy was lol the west coast offense is many variations still flourishes today.
@@BazookaTooth707
Jerry was just hating LoL
How many Super Bowls did Glanville make, much less win? He was JEALOUS. Although he DID have some clever comments.
I loved the Steelers of the 70's but Bill Walsh was a much better head coach then Chuck Noll..

So montana had an elite defense and a bunch of weapons when he was young 🤔
Amen brother, Roger Craig was awesome
I'm gonna play the rival at the bay with the 49ers. Madden 2004 baby. 49ers vs Raiders
Tighest spiral on a ball ive ever seen
Why did Montana not participate in the making of this film? He's the 'elephant in the room.'
I miss Mr.D and Bill Walsh. Might as well throw in Carmen policy too. Nobody manipulated the salary cap like he did.
So Kyle watched this and is doing the same thing
Dwight will clear ....

Why am I here??
Bear Down ‼️
And Walsh ran the Sid Luckman, AL Davis offense.
What??? AL Davis was a deep ball offense. What are you talking about?
He literally did not. He ran his offense.
He took things from them to create his offense.
Roger should be in the hall of fame, Rice adding 5 years to Joe’s career. Really 🤣🙄🤣 what a joke
In My book hes in
Forget 1982 the main thing was the strike

God Damn i miss Bill.
P'ffft. Watching the catch again. #24 didn't get beaten on the catch. Just one of those things where it worked out for them. ~Brian.

You can literally see Walls got abused by Clark. Also that same exact play was run earlier in the season.
The great White defendant? LOLS. @@lynnerose7891

Just think if Chuck Norris was on the team.

Teams want the black QB that can RPO…3 black QB have won Super Bowls. 3. And Mahomes isn’t really black. Lamar Jackson poster boy of failure. Give me a 6’ + tall smart white drop back QB and you will win. Tom Brady
A great warm weather dynasty.
Ask Chicago. They shut them down IN CHICAGO. 28-3. And that was their weakest team of the decade.
Pls dispense with speaking.
Im sorry😂
Roger would've been one hell of an MMA fighter.
Hmmm interesting im a cowboy fan o if Roger stabuach was playing a little bit longer i don't think 49ers would have won as much etc
If Staubach plays a little longer, msybe The Eagles don't go to The Super Bowl in 1980, The 49'ers in 1981, The Redskins in 1982 and 1983, The 49'ers in 1984 and The Bears in 1985? We can play "What If" all day.
@@JuliusC1973 shit why not
Pretty simple is Roger would be in much more danger as he was already admittedly suffering from what was Post Concussion Syndrome and played most of the last stretch of 79' with it very bad. Considering his life thereafter he had a great run anymore would just leave him in a similar situation of Jim Plunkett of constant headaches and ringing.
Because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9
That’s ludicrous!! Roger Stauback would been crushed by that great Niners D and the 85 bears, and the great Giants defense as well.
Roger was great, but he wasn’t that great.
His dead had 0 sympathy lol
Jerry Rice most overrated WR of all time.
Joe,Jerry and Ronnie are the Face of the 49ers
what a time
What a decade!
Landed here in 1982 from central America and los 9ers welcome me to a new universe, thank you ️
