You’ve inspired me for sure, I’ve never used mini circulars like that! I badly want to make socks for my husband and two adult children for Christmas, and dpns are just the death of me lol. Now the trick is making sure I get the right gauge. You can never have too many knitting needles, right? 😆
Love my Chiaogoo 9 in circs! I start toes on magic loop then switch to 9 inch circs. I also hold similar to you with the sock flipped up my chest towards my face. So much faster and bonus, how I successfully learned to knit continental!
Yes. I watched a video on how to work a heel flap and gusset on 9" needles. I've even seen some people work a fish lips kiss heel on 9" needles. I lan on doing that later on.
I’ve just started knitting socks & I was afraid to try 9” circulars as I normally prefer extra long straight that I can took under my arms. I love them it takes me a long time but now I can make socks yeh first socks in 50 almost 60yrs of knitting.
I use the chiaogoo shorties, love, love them. I alternate between using two 2” and one 2” and one 3” tip, finding the one 2” and one 3” easier on my hands, so will use them whenever possible. Love 9” vs magic loop or two circulars. I have started doing two at a time with two of the 9” interchangeables, I make a section of each sock (cuff, leg, heel flap, etc) so although it’s not quite the same as TAAT with magic loop or two circulars, it’s still doing two at a time and definitely my preferred method (so far anyway). I see you are making the Knitcrate socks, I’m planning on starting on those next. I love your videos and all your trips and your hats are amazing :)
I have the same set you have and I enjoy this method of sock knitting best. I knit myself lots of socks and now my husband tried a few pairs I made for him, he really loves how his feet feel this winter. So I have some socks which are thicker and some thinner sock yarn both by Patons Kroy vs the thicker FX. Both are good but the FX needs 3 ball of yarn vs 2 but the FX is thicker and if you go hiking or work out doors, it is worth the extra expense. Am thinking for my birthday, I'll ask for the Shorties in the Blue, think I'll make good use of those too. I also have the full set of ChiaoGoo in stainless steel and really like them too. I do have a bamboo set of Knitter's Pride I use also but some of the tips now show wear I've knit so much. I love the cords of ChiaoGoo.
Jerri Brown It took me 3-4 pair of socks to find my way out of feeling that they are to small and my hands get cramps 😊💕 Go for it and take breaks you’ll find your way
Jerri Brown Definitely feel the same. Hated them...both times I tried them. I'm going to give them a shot holding my needles as she does in the above video.
I started with dpn’s but now use mainly magic loop as I find it quicker . I have never tried 9inch but would certainly give it a go . I also prefer wooden needles to metal though I have liked chiagoo ?! I’m still experimenting!! I am not a continental knitter so maybe this is slower too . I have never mastered the ‘normal ‘ way of doing throwing the yarn . Thank you for sharing 😊
Ann Parsons It takes time to get 9 inch you will definitely feel at first that your hands are too big at least I felt that way. It took me a 3 or 4 pair of socks for my hands to adjust to new tools
I just ordered the compete set of Chiaogoos (sizes 2-15) and they should be here tomorrow. one of my first projects once they get here is going to be my first set of socks. I figure eventually I will probably end up with one of the shortie sets (or all the sets, I really love craft supplies and making things with them) but am only just now moving on to smaller sized projects. Looking forward to building my skills
If you haven't subscribed do as I just finished tutorial to knit one at a time socks however I have knitted a pattern that needs to be edited and test knitted but once that is on I am ready to publish it. It is step by step tutorial so nice long time knitting with me :) anyway I am so happy it encouraged you to try. It took me 3 pairs to adjust my technique to these needles so please be good to yourself and give yourself some time and lots of rest between knitting.
Filipa Costa Do, bear in mind it took me 3-4 pair of socks to get used to it otherwise it’s a strange feeling that the needles are too small for my hands 😁
This is basically the same way I knit. I’ve used 9 inch circulars once . I used a bamboo one and the tips were way too short. I prefer metal. I can’t From what I’ve read I’d like to try the ChiaGoo. Thanks for sharing your technique!
I have a set of the ChiaGoo MINI Twists in both Red and Blue as I did loads of baby socks and booties as my daughter-in-law was having twins. She just had twin boys who are fraternal and not identical as they have different blood types. One is smaller than the other but they are both healthy. YEAH! Now to the needles. I like that I have many options as to what length cord I can assemble the needles to: there are three: 5", 6" and 8" ultra flexible memory-free red or blue cables, both come in the same cord lengths*. The needle tips: you get two in the Red set of 6 different size tips and each tip size comes in both 2" and 3" lengths and you get a pair of each of these. The Blue set has 5 tips sizes and have two sets of tips in the two tip lengths as for the Red set. These sets are both stainless steel as are the Hiya Hiyas but not as sharp as the Hiya Hiya tips are. My finger tips get too sore with lace needles with Hiya Hiyas being that sharp. They work well for me. The tips come with tightening T-Pins and they do not unscrew during use. I can knit using them either Continental or English Flicking. At first I was getting hand cramps but as my hands got more used to how to hold the needles, I was able to relax and knit for hours if I like to. As I am retired, I do love to knit and I love knitting socks. I also like knitting lace so I also ordered some long cables for making shawls. So the tips are very versatile. I did try the Clover Takumi 9" bamboo needles which I normally love the bamboo, but the bamboo has too much grip and the stitches were not rotating on the needles as well and I did not like the dog-leg bend in them. So I made the jump to the stainless steel and I really love them. So I also bought a set of the 4" length in the full ChiaoGoo kit and with the Blue small kit, all the parts are interchangeable. So I got some 2" cables and can also make what is the equivalent of Flexi-Flips. I do have one set of Flexi-Flips by Addi, and those are in bamboo but the size 1 is actual a US size 1-1/2 so I have not used them a lot. I did not want to buy the Addi in the Flexi-Flips in metal as I understand that the tips are nickle-plated and I don't do well with nickle, I get a rash from that metal The HiyaHiyas, I have not tried because my fingers from knitting lace with HiyaHiya ended up bleeding, but with larger needles, this brand was fine. HiyaHiyas are great quality needles, just could not change my knitting style enough to stop the pain and getting blood spots out of lace weight white or ecru yarn when I was making a wedding shawl, was what I experienced. Not easy to get the blood out. Ordinarily I'd put clear nail polish on my finger tips to protect my finger tips but in doing a lot of knitting, if I reapplied that to a finger which became sore, it really burned. So for me, ChiaoGoo is better, though I can yet get a sore spot, it is not as often and have learned to avoid hitting the same place as I knit.
@@Knittingilove I'm retired. My goal is to be this bright not just at 67 but also over the next 40 years too. Knitting is good for the brain as is anything which uses the hands for a long period of time, the more difficult, the knitting pattern, or different yarn or new cable -- so long as it is something new to learn, the more benefit. I used to have arthritis so badly my signature looked like I had all broken fingers. Well, I recovered, changed my diet and then when most of the soreness was gone, rehabilitated the rest by knitting. Can even crochet rugs now if I wanted. What modern medicine tells you, is to make them money, not help us. The doctors who tell us for free how to eat, have nothing to sell, have no motive to lie. I use 9” because they offer much more control. I was always dropping my double points. I’m not a very fast knitter so I cannot say my speed is any better...but I spend much less time looking under the clutch .
You sure can do the heel on the 9” circulars, you just work half the stitches. For the toe you will need to use magic loop or two circulars. If you have the interchangeables, it’s easy to do the toes as well because you can just add an extension to your cable for the magic loop. Here’s one of a series of video tutorials for making a pair of socks start to finish with the 9” circulars (it’s how I learned) from Tina from simply in stitches (hope it’s okay to post this here Barbara, if not, please let me know) ua-cam.com/video/SLqw6K3kCYw/v-deo.html
I do my toe up socks completely on my 9” chia goos, cast on, and heels. I do the Turkish cast on. The first row of increase is a little more difficult but by the time I get to the second row of increases it’s easy going. When I get to the heel, I only work half the stitches placing a marker at each end and work the heel in a way similar to magic loop. It’s pretty easy. You just have to practice. I ripped out my first sock several times but was determined to not have to use any other needles.
Or magic loop (fancy word for knitting circular knitting needles with long cable) secondly I would recommend at least even number as at some stage you need to decide which is top and which sole of the sock to place a heel ♥️😃👍🏻
Right! I did 53 so I could knit 2 together to close the loop. But I wasn’t sure if there was still a way to try this method when they didn’t reach. I’ll try the magic loop instead
I started toe up using magic loop so 24 sts (12 sts per knitting needle) check my step by step free socks knitting tutorial- link in description… I think
R44 Inspector I have a tendency to purl wrapping the yarn clockwise (normally it’s anti clockwise ) If I get some time I will 😊💕 I prefer to knit in 9 inch circulars 😅
Thanks for showing what your right index finger does! I think trying that will really help me.

Lib H I need to try Chiaogoo 😊💕
I just tried 9 inch needles again.... and this time I love 💕 it... so much faster.
The Yarn Closet It’s the way I hold it mattered when I started holding fabric it got way better for my hands
The Yarn Closet and well done 👍🏻😃💕
I like long sections of stockinette, even can take a walk with them. Well around the house I do, out on the street, no.
Thanks for the video. I just turned the heel of my first sock using chiaogoo 9" needles. I love it.
psychowhogirl (Kim) wow did you do heel on 9 inch? I do afterthought heel and to knit that I switch to magic loop
Yes. I watched a video on how to work a heel flap and gusset on 9" needles. I've even seen some people work a fish lips kiss heel on 9" needles. I lan on doing that later on.
Have used 9 inch Chicagoo,,,love them,
Also addi 12 in,, are nice,
Better than dpns,
Thanks for the video,,,You knit fast,,,!
Thank you. I bought a pair of 9-inch needles to make a pair of flip flop socks for a friend. Going to start them this weekend.
Anita Duckworth Have fun 👍🏻😃💕

P P One day I get myself Chiaogoo maybe 2.75mm for DK socks. As probably they have the same hard cord, do they?
Yes, they have the same red lace cable. The interchangeable set includes 2.75mm tips (2” and 3” set)

I love 9” circs. Love my Chaiogoos
I have never tried Chaiogoos, what is the difference? I think one tip is bigger :)
Knitting I Love My 9” Chaiogoos have the same length tips. They are just so smooth and don’t catch at the joins.
I use 9" needles ChiaoGoo's , the tips are slightly longer , I love them
I have Chiaigoo shorties but still need to get used to using them! 😬
Thank You Very Much ❣️
I’m happy I could help ❤️
I love HiyaHiya Sharps in 9 inches. Just had a new set delivered today, 2.5mm.

Of course you can. However for the toe go to DPNs (double pointed needles). Have fun!
