Loretta was smiling because she is essentially saying, Bring it on and you'll get your butt wooped. It's a smile of confidence. Great review.
Yes .
Allen Pape yep, and she wasn’t afraid to put her words into action.
I always remember that line from the movie, "If you wanna keep that arm you better off from around my man."
I so agree with this. Loretta is not one to be pushed. Once in an interview, she was ask about her husband, Do and his temper. For he was known to hit her. What would be considered today, abusive. She was ask why she stayed with him. She said she stayed, became we she was her husband, no matter what. Then she smiled and said something like, “besides, he never once hit me, that I didn’t hit him twice”. Lol She was right by his bedside in his last days. Loretta and Do grew up in The Appalachian Mountains of KY. Very very poor. The only way to earn a living was to work in the coal mines or make moonshine whisky. Both were very dangerous professions. Do recognized Loretta’s great singing and knew that was a way for them to get out of those mountains and to get them and their children and better life. And that is exactly what he did. Brought them to Nashville.
@@holly7869 " Dang it, Doo ! I might be ignorant, but I ain't stupid !" 😄 I think I know the entire script ! Lol!
The older i get the more i like country. Nice to see a Brit review these American icons. Thank you.
The old country, this crap today is just awful.
@@mcgaugh57 you are correct
Brits aren't exposed to country as much as Americans are, but once exposed, we love it as much as you do! It was the bars in Hong Kong that gave me my introduction to it, loved it ever since, especially the older stuff.
@@hainanbob6144 Look at the Beatles - there's hella country influence there, especially on their early stuff where they even covered Buck Owens.
#metoo
Just love it when a young British rocker appreciates American country. Good music crosses many lines. Fil, you are the real deal...classy, complete and accurate. You sure do know your stuff all across the spectrum! Another well researched and informative review.
Word :-)
Damn, Fil. I have been listening to Loretta Lynn for 50 years and you pointed out things I have never noticed before! You have quite the ear!
She had looks, charisma, sang her ass off and played guitar. That accent... She was great.
Loretta is one of a kind no one wrote songs like her.
Play her song.. wings upon your horns. Her songs are about her life
Please forgive the correction, but no one writes songs like her. She will be 90 on April 14, 2022 and is still writing and recording songs. Although it is very rare, she still makes brief cameo appearances at her ranch during a few of the events held there...even if the bring a mic to the car just for her to say hey. She has no plans to stop until she simply can't do it anymore. She has over 1,000 songs written that she hasn't even recorded yet.
she is one of the best, but Dolly writes them as well, if not better
I'm from Hardy, AR....Home of the Wilburn Brothers! That's so cool. I didn't know that about Loretta Lynn.
Phil really has an open mind..to his credit..and he seems perpetually sunny.
“Women like you, they’re a dime a dozen, You can buy ‘em anywhere.” Such a sick burn, sung with a smile! I love Loretta. I came to UA-cam today to look for some of her songs and was lucky enough to find this reaction by you, Phil. Thanks so much. You’ve captured the most important things about our feisty Loretta, may she Rest In Peace.
Well now you have Miss Loretta, but don't forget Miss Patsy Cline. I live about an hour away from where Patsy lived and where she's buried. A little town called Winchester in Virginia. We love Miss Patsy and Miss Loretta
Yes please do Patsy Cline Fil! I love love love her!
Didn't Loretta Lynn do a tribute album to Patsy Cline?
@@fnjesusfreak She recorded a few of Patsy's songs after Patsy died
Trisha Urvan they were such great friends also. The day Patsy died they were supposed to go shopping together. Loretta is the real deal!
@@teamcougars They loved each other. Patsy took Loretta under her wing
That jumbo body hummingbird Gibson is worth a fantastic fortune today.. Phil you are awesome... You are so intuitive.. with all musicians in all genres . Love your content..
Amen!
It's actually an epiphone
@@davidb8397 Yea, it´s an EPIPHONE, great guitars, got one.
The Loretta song that I liked quite a bit was "Don't Come Home a Drinkin with Lovin on your Mind!" She said her peace! An American icon. Thank you, Fil.
That dude on the steel guitar looks like a real rocker. For a moment I thought it might have been Slash.
Courageous woman. Great review as always.
Neal Schier It’s Slash’s Granddad!!
@@MichaelandCathy1999 😂🤣😂
Neal Schier Loretta is one tough cookie! I think people forget how revolutionary she was for the time and she is still kicking ass.
...steel guitar play in this clip was Don Helms..steel man for Hank Williams Sr Drifting Cowboy Band
@@johnrfranklin9072
I thought that was Don Helms, but wasn't sure because he looked like the guy playing the steel guitar in the Hank, Sr video Fil did a couple of weeks ago.
SING IT LORETTA!!! TELL THAT HUSSY OFF!!!
@Barbara Downie ..... Bwahahahahahahahaha
Amen!
Barbara Downie yes ma’am!
"Women like you are a dime dozen. You can buy them anywhere." Love it.
Spicy ht TRUTH!
Loretta taught herself guitar. Great songwriter. Two other great songs were Now I’ve got the pill... and Fist City. Love her so much.
Her duet with Conway Twitty called You're the Reason Our Kids are Ugly always cracked me up!! Oh and Louisiana Woman and Mississippi Man! Those two were great together!
M Tasch-sandor-simon Squaw is on the Warpath.
The Pill sand Rated X were two of several songs banned from radio play. When Mooney first heard Wings Upon Your Horns, he told Loretta that was the dirtiest song he had ever heard! Of course, being Loretta Lynn just writing about life, she didn't see anything wrong with it.
My dad took me to see Loretta Lynn when I was a kid and it was a fantastic show. Not just the performance but the humor. Great entertainer and artist! The movie about her life, "Coal Miners Daughter", is fantastic. Sissy Spacek and Beverly D'Angelo nailed the vocals and the parts.
They sure enough did, i was amazed @ the wonderful job they both did in that movie, FANTASTIC VOCALS!!
So proud to be a Kentuckian and a Coal Miners Daughter like Loretta. Just wish I could sing without scaring the wildlife. 🙄
LOL!!!! I choked on my coffee reading that!! You aren't alone...many of us wish we could sing without scaring the wildlife. I'm not even karaoke good...and that's a very low standard. Hey, at least you're a coal miner's daughter from Kentucky. I'm a house painter's son from North Carolina. I remember my daddy going out trying to line up houses to do so we could eat. We both know the struggle is real.
You made me laugh and that’s a good thing
She’s always rocked, her lyrics and arrangements are brilliant.
Pure look of admiration of your face as you were watching that. She's a 10/10
Some of the best music/musicians have come from Kentucky. Thanks Fil for reviewing her...she is a living legend
IM SO GLAD YOUR NOT CLOSE MINDED , NO ONE WOULD TOUCH THE DIVERSITY OF MUSIC , THAT WHY YOUR ONE OF A KIND , THANKS FIL
I love how she tells off that brazen hussy. I learned so much from your analysis video about Loretta! Thank you for doing your research and giving your viewers a greater appreciation of Loretta and her music. 😘
That's a sassy country song. It's not sad or pathetic. It's Loretta, a string, confident woman, telling a man eating woman, "Stay back or I'll have to smack!" And she meant it! She was one of my country idols when I was a little girl. Still is. I love her song, "One's On The Way." Reminds me of my mom. Great info and analysis. Thank you.😊
She wrote songs about her life. She lived these songs and was self taught. That just makes it real.
Thanks for playing Loretta Lynn! Such a natural talent. I saw her when I was really little and wasn't aware of what an amazing Legend I was listening too. This video caused me to remember. That was such a long time ago. Go Loretta! Thanks Fil!
Fil, the REAL deal, what a woman and a pure talent! thanks
Loretta is my wife's favorite female country singer. Could be because she is from Kentucky like my wife and I are.
Amen.
Especially after the Ken Burns country Music documentary I have a new appreciation for country music.
Hey Fil! Alot of us are really looking forward to you performing an old country song like this with very clean sound !!❤️💯
“Van Lear Rose” is gorgeous.
Thanks for you wide-ranging musical enthusiasms! It’s apparent that you really enjoy what you do. 😊
Great post Fil sounds of my childhood before R&R my parents played country music in Dayton Ohio where i grew up. We are from Kentucky and Loretta is my moms hero and she sang this tune every show. Again your diverse taste in music shines through
You always give a great reaction....THANK YOU!
Loretta Lynn is a living legend! ❤
Oh , I know . I am going to sit down now. Giving it up to the pros.
The band and sound are top notch. We are really lucky with how well sound was produced way back then.
She makes it all look so effortless. She is one of the best storytellers in any genre of music.
Thank You Again!!! We appreciate You!!
Being from Kentucky and a dad who worked in the coal mines, I'm partial to Coal Miner's Daughter. At my aunt's surprise 80th birthday party, that song was played as she walked in. There wasn't a dry eye. It's like Danny Boy to us hillbillies. :) I also LOVED her duet with Jack White, Portland, Oregon. :) and all the great duets she did with Conway Twitty.
Thanks for doing this video! Her songs are as popular now as when they were recorded for sure. I play bass and sing in a country band and do a few of her songs. Dance floor is packed when you start the song. Sometimes I stop singing in the part that says "women like you their a dime a dozen..." and the crowd is singing it to the top of the their lungs. Too much fun doing her songs!
People love LL because she dared to sing about real life drama and they connect with her. Kudos to her accolades and all she gave to country music! ♥👊
Thank you for respect of my heritage. Makes me love you more.
She is also known for her sense of humor! She recovered well from her stroke. I wish I could say I’ve recovered half as well as Loretta has. Strokes are no joking matter they’re life altering.
Gawd she is just so good. I really love that Jack White went to her house, knocked on her door and ladidadida they made a Grammy award winning album together. I still love every song on the album that escapes my name. The Rose of...... brb. THE VAN LEER ROSE. One of my fav albums. My wife and I were stunned to hear them announce the winner and we looked at each other like twin space aliens: "JACK WHITE AND LORETTA LYNN ?????!!!! " then next day bought that CD and played it till midnight
One of the greatest. And most beautiful...
Loretta Lynn was the first concert I ever attended. Was 12 years old when my parents took me. She's a wonderful entertainer and oh my the costume changes, very one of them an evening gown. Wonderful memory. 🤗
As always, a great analysis/evaluation. Love the channel.
Thanks!
Always great reviews and analysis! Thanks!
One of the queens of country, grace and class throughout all the good years and the not-so-good yours. Legend !!
WOW...you really did your homework and researched this iconic performer aka Loretta Lynn!
Utterly Fabulous Fil! I learned things about Loretta Lynn that I certainly wouldn't have any other way. Your reviews are always uplifting.
Hey Fil. Loretta is as you described. She just sang, and didn't need alot more.
spent a summer on a cow farm when i was 16, the radio in the barn blaring her music. thanks Fil for keeping
this music alive. your reviews are my favs on youtube.
Loretta was such a dynamic woman back in the day. So talented and outspoken. Great video Fil.
She actually wrote "Miss being a Mrs. Tonight" with Jack Black. Written after her husband, "Doo" passed away.
I don't know if there are any videos, her twist of words & phrases were all Loretta.
I love her singing If You're Looking At Me You're Looking At Country. She's so right
You had me at the song title. Everyone watch out when a woman smiles like that 😉. Great analysis. 👍
"Fist City" is even more feisty.
What an amazing video! Your respect and appreciation for good music (despite the decade or genre) is such a beautiful thing. I have loved Loretta my entire life (my parents were fans) and videos like this introduce her to a new generation.
Quick story- In the early 70s, Olivia Newton-John's music started crossing over to Country radio in the U.S. In 1974, she won CMA Female Vocalist of the Year against Loretta, Dolly and Tammy Wynette. The backlash of a "foreigner" winning the most coveted industry prize was ridiculous. Most huge names in country were openly hostile and often venomous in their contempt.
The one exception was Loretta Lynn! She was quoted in the media as saying, "Olivia Newton-John when you come to Nashville, you give me a call, and I’ll help you any way I can."
I have the same expression as you do when I watch these artists!
Awesome analysis Fil. Love Loretta!
Loretta Lynn is from the legendary country style that was real country music , and I've said it hundred times before and I'll say it again here ... there ain't no lyrics like country western lyrics. Lol. Thanks Fil.
And I think another essential quality of country music is: emotion.
Wow I just subscribed to her UA-cam channel last week. I got a kick out of the old Crisco ads she has posted there. Thanks for the video!
I love old country especially from the 60s and 70s - Her duet with Conway Twitty called Louisiana Woman Mississippi Man is one of my favorites.
Lorreta Lynn credited Patsy Cline for her career, and was her best friend. Lorreta was crushed at the news of Patsy dying in a plane crash. When it was announced on the radio March 5, 1963 that Patsy was killed in a plane crash, my mother cried for a week. Another great review, Fil! Cheers, mate! :)
Love, love, country music. Got to chat with Loretta in a social media made for those who love country music and for country musicians. It was an honor for me, that I was recommended by the creator of the group at the time. Wish I hadn't left. But I am not good at multitasking. Besides I need my time. But love Loretta songs..
Just found last night while cruising UA-cam a song I’ve always liked by Don Williams called It Must Be Love. I found the drumming amazing to my inexperienced ear and can’t wait to ask my music teacher what the drum pattern is. Tried to slow it down but my unsophisticated ear can’t really pick up much of the drumming
Loretta, thank Fil. She is something else. And, a scrapper with an award winning smile!
Loretta is a country music legend. 💖🎶
Love Loretta Lynn..she claims she lives in a haunted house..Album with Jack White was great..has anyone heard it..thanks Fil
Yes.
Hurricane Mills is haunted. Been there a few times, always had odd things happen
I like Little Red Shoes from that album, wish her voice was more in the mix. Shoot!
@@jameschristiansson3137 Yes..I really like the Portland tune also
It won best country album, Jack and Lorretta got best duet and I believe Jack got a grammy for production. Portland was a good song and they had a great relationship. She wanted to do other peoples songs on the album and he told her she was too good for that and made her write her own songs.
Awesome Fil very knowledgeable information of a Legend. Great video.
Loretta the Queen of country music a true legend RIP
Coal Miners Daughter is one of the greatest American songs ever. pure country americana. just singing about how she grew up. like every other person alive, we all live country.
Her husband was a noted womanizer, and Loretta's life reflected in her song writing. "Don't Come Home A Drinking (with loving on your mind) is another 3 chords and the truth hit song she wrote about Moonie's philandering ways
R.i.p. Loretta Lynn 🙏❤️🎵🎙️🎸
Thanks Fil for the research and information about copyright and publishing rights back in the day. What a shame that she never got ownership of her own songs. As usual- great video!
When my daughter was 6 we were analyzing song writing and my daughter says ",so I guess when u write a song you write about something u know. " @6 she understood the one key thing about being an artist. Loretta epitomized this. Pioneering and paving the way for song writers. :)
I see Loretta in the same light as I view Hank Williams Sr. There's an undefinable quotient to just how enjoyable her (and his) music _and_ performing is. Sort of that thing about how really great bands can "equal more that the sum of their differing parts", but in a single person. That's rare, and just beautifully mystifying in a way.
Great work Fil, thanks for all that you do for music & musicians of all types. You're doing the listening (young and old) public a big service in my humble opinion. Cheers!
Love Loretta thanks so much
Great review, Fil. If I'm not mistaken, Dave Clark somehow kept the rights to the DC-5's records.
Yes he did! I have a video on DC-5, he was very switched on business wise!
I’m proud she’s a country singer from the south. She is THE queen of country music. Such an icon. So amazing how her songs about daily life and struggles became such big hits and gave outsiders insight on the struggles of poor working people.
Hi, Fil. Would you consider doing an analysis of one of Crystal Gayle's songs? She is Loretta Lynn's sister and a crossover artist from Country to Pop in the 1970s and 1980s. She had 18 No. 1 hits and numerous awards. Her best-known hit was "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue" but one of my favorites was "When I Dream." Please check her out. Thanks!
I'm a country music fan so this was great. I love the old music, especially the steel guitar. Your analyses are so full spectrum and enjoyable that by the end of the video I forget to like! Spot on about allowable content in those days.
Great review! I learn SO much from your exceptional research.
I've always loved Loretta Lynn, the quintessential country performer who was fearless with her lyrics.
Hi Gorgeous Fil, I like Loretta Lynn s spunk and I am so glad the other women's name isn't Jolene! 🍎 and 💋 for my teacher 🥰
Loretta Lynn is one of the best lyricist in music no matter what genre it is.Phill I Love your channel and the wide variety of music that you analyze and review. You are definitely an asset to music.
I always appreciated Loretta as a singer/songwriter and it was illuminating to hear your analysis of her musicianship. Thank you!
Just when I think when I seen it all from you. Thank you fil
Thank you for this! Loretta is the real deal and a unique artist.
I was watching your eyes there, Fil, and they were all over the place. Didn't look like autocue or even post-its. Do you actually remember all this stuff for every video, dates and all? What a fantastic memory!
And another wonderful educational vid.
Miss Loretta Lynn is a country music icon!! And still going strong!! I ADORE everything about her!!...❤❤✌❤🤘
Just the title of the song makes me laugh...😂! Fantastic, Fil- thank you!
I love Loretta Lynn's music and her of course. My Mom was name after her. And as a kid growing up in the 1970s, I grew up on Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty, George Jones and Tammy Wynette. My Grandma use to sing some of her songs along with my Mom.
This song is great 😊👍
I absolutely love that you are featuring some of the American country western greats! Thanks for keeping them going! I learn something new with every one of your analysis videos, Fil!
Loretta one of my favorite singers ever, thumbs up to you!
My Mom loved her, she is is a great singer, reminds me of when I was very young, Thanks Fil!
Thank you so much for your review. Typical Southern woman: she can smile as sweet as honey while her words can cut you to the bone. :)
Have you seen the movie Coal Miner's Daughter? If not I recommend it highly.
I haven't yet!
@ Empress Mermaid - That is a great movie. Sissy Specek did an amazing job. Yes great recommendation.
@@wingsofpegasus line from film - - Radio station manager: “And come off that dumb hillbilly act!”
Doolittle: “If you knew Loretta, you’d know that ain’t no act.”
Loretta Lynn: “Thank you, honey.”
This exchange makes me laugh without fail.
My many favorites
Levon Helms of The Band played Loretta's father in the movie "Coal Miner's Daughter".
Can't forget about her little sister Crystal Gayle & cousin Patty Lovelace either. 🤘🤘👍👍
That's why she's a star. Thanks FIL.
Since the Ken Burns series on PBS on Country Music.... I've been watching more and more country vids and liking it !
Great job on the analysis Fil and back story ✌😆
Request: I'm gonna keep pushing for.... The Band playing The Night They Drove Ole Dixie Down from The Last Waltz concert !
Don't know why they never get the love they deserve ? Levon Helm is amazing doing both the singing & drumming......
He said he found it easy to sing while playing... he sure makes it look that way ! ( R.I.P Levon )
Thank you again Fil & I'll be here waiting for The Band 😉
While never being a hardcore C&W fan I have cherrypicked certain artists to listen to and, yet again, you have added one to my list (you have definitely affected my music budget more than once) because that song was nothing short of superb!
The fact that her songs were effectively censored by the music industry/radio, doesn’t surprise me as much as the kudos Lynn is due for having the courage to NOT stop writing about subjects that she must have known in advance would never be played on air. That displays a purity of purpose that has never been common enough.
N.B.: who currently holds the rights to the early songs of The Beatles? At one point Michael Jackson owned them and, as far as I know, Paul McCartney has yet to succeed in acquiring them which, in my opinion, is criminal (and not for the sake of the money).
So, thanks again for a stellar episode! Might it be possible at some point to get your opinion on Stan Ridgway? Perhaps “Mission In Life” or “Stranded.” (It’s SO hard to choose with such a fine song writer!)
