In the online looney world, to be sponsored by TfL would, alas and alack, invite accusations of lickspittle in the pocket biased reportage by said characters of our host.
It's probably better that he leaves their accounts department alone in that case.
Would be nice to think that somehow he got a free annual pass in his Christmas stocking for all his efforts though.

Chesham is easily the quaintest tube stop, beating Roding Valley
hey by the way Geoff when you do Walthamstow, don't miss the trinkets in the village: there's an original GER sign a couple bridges up - the walk there is really nice too; also, the person who did the mosaics on the overground platforms also did ones just up the road. I'm sure there's more stuff around that I've forgotten.

Ahh, plenty of good memories of walking down the hill from Chesham High School (as was) after GCSE exams and getting the tube home to Chalfont and Latimer. it was also a super convenient way of getting into London for school trips. why take a coach when you can all get the train!
Also as far as I'm aware Chesham is the only place in the UK that had a Mcdonalds which closed and never came back (in the early 2000s I think). It was where the M&Co is in the shot behind Geoff.

In the mid-fifties I went to a Cubs Camp at Chesham Bois, & the railway ran along the bottom of our field. The push-pull loco & old Met coaches set would pass quite frequently, & we would run down the slope towards the fence, waving & shouting at the engine-crew. The fireman, a cheerful black guy with a huge grin, would always wave back at us.

I first discovered Chesham when I was 15, trying to do all the ends of lines myself. It was at a time when London Transport (as was) had introduced extension tickets on machines... but not for children. So I had to get one at a ticket office, with the staff member unsure if my National Rail photocard for my season ticket was valid (it seemed to be one of those periods when the two didn't talk to each other and so some ticket options became a mess) and trekked out. Chesham immediately became my favourite station and over the years I've often returned to enjoy it. I miss the shuttle and the fun of waiting in the old waiting room on the bay platform at Chalfont & Latimer. I did, however, discover the Chesham waiting room on my very first visit.

I used to work in Chesham, getting the train from Rickmansworth. At the time the shuttle was still running, so when got off at Little Chalfont there used to be a little cafe where I used get a coffee and a kit kat and then get on the shuttle waiting for the trip into Chesham. I loved the waiting room with all the old photos and yes it was nice and warm on those cold winter nights waiting for the train back home. Thanks for bringing back those memories Geoff.

I lived in Chesham until I was 11 years old. My family moved then, and I've only returned a few times. This video has brought back many memories.
I can remember the goods yard in the 60s. My Gran would take me to watch the steam locos shunting backwards and forwards manoeuvring the rolling stock onto different tracks.
I also remember climbing the stairway up to the bridge and the long path known as "The Backs" that ran along the side of the valley and beside some of the track.
Thanks for a well presented and interesting video.

Talking of station gardens. There was at least one station that's sadly long gone on The North Coast of New South Wales Australia called Telegraph Point that had the most gorgeous array of plants as well as native ones like Staghorns and Ferns among other beautiful plants and had one numerous awards just like Chesham some dating back to 1964. While few locals used the station and that not many trains stopped there it did attract visitors even giving them guided tours around the station. Sadly as i mentioned the station is long gone it closed in February 1983 and has long been demolished all that's left is the water tower.

When I was a youngster I lived in Willesden and went to school in the City. One day I decided to explore the Metropolitan line as I used to see these large trains overtaking my Bakerloo line train to Stanmore (a long time before the Jubilee line was even thought of) so I got off the Bakerloo train at Finchley Road and caught the first Metropolitan train that arrived. This was an electric locomotive hauled train to Aylesbury and I got on without realising that it was a fast train - well, I say fast in the loosest way. The first stop was Moor Park but at that time the Metropolitan line hadn't been 'four tracked' between Harrow on the Hill and Moor Park so this 'fast train' had to wait before each intermediate station for the preceding train to leave before we crawled through it without stopping!
When we arrived at Rickmansworth the electric locomotive was detached and replaced by a steam engine which continued the journey. The changeover was remarkably quick - no more and 3 or 4 minutes. At Chalfont and Latimer I saw this small steam engine with incredibly ancient looking carriages and got off my train and went over to the bay platform and shuttled to Chesham. Even then, to my 12 year old eyes the station seemed quaint but, as my season ticket was only valid to Willesden Green I didn't dare to leave the station as I would have had to pass the ticket collector and would have been caught without a valid ticket!!!
I went home and changed at Moor Park onto a slam door T stock train and had to change again at Harrow as this train was non-stop between Harrow and Finchley Road. The first train to arrive at Harrow was an F stock train with oval windows and I took this to Wembley Park and the back on the Bakerloo to Willesden Green. I had a lot of explaining (and fibbing) to do to my mother about my tardiness but what an adventure. After that transport became my lifetime hobby which I pursue to this day

I've been struck lately by the similarities in the style of some of these old London stations with those of my home in Australia, particularly in the Blue Mountains about as far from Sydney as Chesham is from central London. I suppose they would have been built around the same time and drawing from the same general pool of knowledge. But the waiting room especially reminded me of the kinds of things you'd see in waiting rooms on my home line.

On a recent [ enforced ] layover, in London [ thankyou freezing fog, and then, snow ], I took the opportunity to check-out the north-east extremity of 'La Ligne Centrale' - and, oh my, did the world look pretty under a decent layer of snow, out Epping, and Hainault way [ Geoff video consulted, as a post-mottem exercise ]. Great work, Geoff.

That stretch is equally beguiling for the station architecture and on warmer days for the sight of cows gamboling amongst the buttercups in the fields.

Good to see you in my area again. Regarding the Signal Box, I was at Chorleywood today and there was a poster saying there's plans to build a working model railway of Chorleywood Station in the old Signal Box. I'm looking forward to seeing that up and running.

    I highly recommend visiting Chesham.

Can't believe I missed the waiting room when I went. I guess it was in summer so I was probably not as interested in cosy indoor places.
I was interested in the signal box too, a member of staff kindly took my phone and filmed through the window so I could see what was inside.

Never knew the labyrinth artwork was number 1/270, Chesham's top! Looking forward to the rest of the series.

I remember going to Chesham with my Dad in the early 2000's (I can't remember specifically when). At the time, it was the only station on the Underground network that he'd never been to and he invited me along as well. We spent the afternoon in the town before heading home again

Chesham is somewhere I've always wanted to go and nearly did when I was last in the UK, however time was against me and I ended up having to head for Watford to meet my cousin before I had the chance. Luckily, I have this video to take me there instead :D.
We have a few quite English villages in New South Wales: Exeter, Millthorpe and Bundanoon spring to mind, but none as quaint as Chesham, and there's no such thing as "quaintly Australian" really.
For those interested in name origins like me, Chesham's name is a simplification of "Ceasterhamm", a combination of Old English words "ceaster", meaning "heap of stones" and "hamm", meaning "water meadow" (Why Do Shepherds Need A Bush? - David Hilliam, 2010). Interestingly, the River Chess is named from Chesham, not vice versa as is usually the case with towns/ cities on rivers, such as Exeter (the English one, not the Australian one obviously).

Your mention about tube jaunts as a teenager reminds me of doing the same with a friend and our Capital cards.

Wow, pretty smart move to convert the water tower into a parking space for bicycles. It’s definitely a pretty creative way to reuse/recycle otherwise-obsolete infrastructure for modern uses.
And yes, this definitely doesn’t scream “metro station” to me; this looks more like a rural suburban railway station than a metro station.

I travelled to Chesham last year and thus ticked off my *final* end-of-line visit! It's taken me a good number of years though... indeed I added Amersham way back in 1980. Unfortunately I didn't check out Chesham's waiting room so it looks as though I'm gonna have to return...

I went to school in Chesham. Took many trips to and fro on the shuttle service and occassionally having to leg it through the underpass to make my Chiltern Railways Connection. The new integrated met line service is definitely better for getting into London there used to be a fair wait for a main met line train.
