I watch these Words & Pictures about half a dozen times every Halloween, this one isn't quite as menacing as the 70's one, but the witch is scarier, thanks so much
Thank you so much for uploading this! I saw this programme just once when I was a kid (early 80's) and I have never forgotten the haunting witch song at 6:34 and 14:31, and the accompanying puppet animation. And I see from the comments that it left an impression on many others too. Thanks again!
OMG same as so many other people this has stuck in my memory since I was a kid. I love this and so pleased to have found it on here. I even vaguely remember the witches hat the woman made. I always remember the song being a bit eery and I love anything eery. Thank you ❤❤
Thanks for uploading this. The witch and wizard song I later discovered to be an adaptation of the traditional number Two Magicians that the likes of Steeleye Span have done. The older version has a chorus.
I felt like the primary school child again rewatching this ....the witch song , always stuck in my head growing up ! I used to sing it to my two lads when they were young at Halloween 🎃
Gawd what a blast! We had this episode and the "Prehistoric Animal Brigade / Not Now Bernard" on VHS for years... Whereas I remember the "Prehistoric Animal Brigade / Not Now Bernard" episode very well, my memories of this episode were a bit hazier, as all I could remember (besides the song, for which let's be fair, it was the songs that generally left the most lasting impressions on many people who watched 'Words And Pictures' in that era) was the story with the cats "dining on mice" in the witches hats, and then the same cats being visible inside the hats when the witches flew home - I always thought it was a Meg & Mog story for years afterwards, so it's good to finally tie that memory up properly! 😁 Thank you for posting this! I wonder what happened to Vicky Ireland after she left the series in 1989? She was lovely, but sadly it seems she just faded off after her stint in Words And Pictures ended...
Yes me too - I remember that back then Halloween wasn't a fun thing like in the US, it was a bit creepy. I didn't want to go out after dark on Halloween as I really felt that witches, ghosts and goblins etc would be out in the darkness!
Ho-lee crap. The short song at 6:35 is the only thing I remember from this program and now I remember how freaked out I was when she went all blurry into the camera. Evil eyes! Thanks so much for posting. I wonder if we'll see the 'Lazy Lion' episode?
The early '80s version (the production date at the end is 1982) of Words and Pictures, when it moved from Henry Woolf's 1970s bookshop to Vicky Ireland's 1980s library, but still had Charlie.
Yeah not nearly as good as the Henry Woolf Words & Pictures “Witches of Halloween” with the Pumpkin Jack o Lantern who frightens everyone ….that has stuck in my mind as has the song for 45 years …..the early -mid 70s truly were the most exciting time for childrens’ television. Thankfully some kind soul rescued a video so you can see it online. All we need now are Tony Robinson doing Sam on Boffs Island and Penelope Lively’s Bells of Astercote, I was at Avebury on Sunday which reminds me watch Children of the Stones if you ever get a chance !
Rehannah Mian Hmm? I think the skunk didn't appear in a lot of segments in it when somebody upload the episodes with Stuart Bradley & Nutmeg the cat in it as well.
I never forget that witches song...
Same here I remember it well from my childhood
And it still scares me slightly 😂👍
thank you...what great memories i have from this magical time...
Thanks for the upload. I miss my 70s childhood.
That witch song! Argh!!!! Heard it once 30 odd years ago...never forgot it, like a cursed ear worm.
The closing song! A five second animation but never forgotten for 35 years. Thanks for posting.
Oh man, this has stayed with me for nearly forty years!
So pleased to see this again! The witch song has stuck in my mind for about 30 years and I've looked for it online loads of times. Thank you!
Omg me too, my always told me i was petrified of this song now I know why!
Me too! I sing it to my kids every Halloween. No one else seems to know it!
Me too, for some reason I couldn't get the image of the cats using the witches hats out of my head but couldn't find it on UA-cam for ages.
I remember it well watching it at school it scared me in a good way. I remember I couldn't sleep for ages 😂
I specifically remember watching this back in primary school.

Which one was the 70’s one, was it still this same animation but with a different model?
@@BelaMadeira it was the one with the story about a pumpkin on a stick that comes to life, it's on you tube & we'll worth a watch
My favourite ❤

The flying witch terrified me when I was little and forced to watch at school. Creeped me out watching it again!

Were witches of holloween love that song always sing it to my kids lol
I have been looking for this for years. Thank you.
It's amazing how things stick in your memory. I remember being confused when the witch said "It's curtains!"
This is the one I remember. That witch, sticks in my head. Love it, this is why I am obsessed with witches....
That flying witch doll frightened me and made me cry when I was younger. I mean, why would they make this? For the love of god, why!! It’s horrific!

When I was a kid the 'choosing rhyme' went something like 'Ip, dip, dog sh*t, you are not it'.

Just had a complete flashback to being a child.......
How bizarre, I remember this episode so well and singing the witches of Halloween xx
Scarlett Fox i always sing it to my kids lol
@@tracy-dg3qq I did too 😉
I don’t know how old the edition is but I saw the witch animation and song in Words and Pictures in Halloween in 1979. I was in Primary 2.
Happy Halloween
Charlie is so cool...I miss charlie so much....time machine...wish I could go back😥😥😥😥😥
He's dead now , forget him
The date at the end of the program was 1982. I'm sure I remember ithe closing witch song from earlier than that.
Yes, I remember watching it the 70s too. This must have been a re-broadcast.
Was singing the song only yesterday. Born in 73
Wow I remember this 1982 when I started Primary school aged 5

The Bells of Astercote is on this channel. Enjoy! ua-cam.com/video/-v0x47DgynU/v-deo.html
And Toni Arthur dressed as a horrific cackling witch in a misty forest, possibly the scariest television ever!
Remember this too.
I remember the witches clean their teeth with spider paste and eating bat wing sandwiches
Always remember the witch fluting towards the screen, creepy eyes
White witches 🧙♀️ are good fairies 🧚♂️ wicket witches 🧙♀️ are bad fairies 🧚♀️
Why is the top of the picture missing?
I remember the spider paste
I miss Great Britain. She’s gone now.
\I love this episode a great magic pencil as well,
Brilliant anime and magic pencil here
Does anyone know who the kids are? Would love for them to see this again.
Rehannah Mian Can you upload more Words & Pictures episodes with
Stuart Bradley for me please?
Zac Chandler Hi, I only have this version unfortunately. There are some Stuart Bradley ones on youtube though.
