It succeeds because it recognizes that Clark Kent, his life growing up, the human parents who raised him, and the people who grew up with him and helped to mold and shape the man he would become, is what make Superman, and not the other way around. It is the only story line I have ever seen that attempts to integrates Clark and Superman into one whole person rather than “super hero” and “secret identity”, with the exception of the more recent “Man of Steel” movie, and it succeeds in that effort beyond any other.
