I remember workin in my Paw-paws shop using a very similar Coats tire machine. Great video Herm. Brought a little tear to my eye when you spun that cone down to tighten up. Great memories.

My Uncle still has a tire changer like that and uses it all the time, way to go Kenny. As the saying goes "Work smarter not harder"
I like these videos sharing details about how things are done. I remember doing similar stuff with Sprint car tires. Everything is different, but there's details that is much the same.

Going to see some tire management tonight at Florence speedway in Kentucky and that's where a young Jeff Gordon got his first win in a sprint car
We used to turn the right rear around on used sprint car tires on a non-wing sprint car and get some times another feature or at least a heat race out of it and would regularly beat the guys that told us we couldn’t do that.

Next time talk about what do you take to the race track , as far as tools , and spare parts and equipment, show your hauler, thanks.
Use to use one of those tire changers every day in my youth working at the full service gas station back when gas was .25 cents a gallon
I once knew how to operate that old tire changer! It was easy enough for a teenager to use it correctly. 😊
Yep. 3rd job was attendant at a full services gas station at 17. This brought those memories back.
Used a Coats 20/20 in the 70's at a Shell gasoline station.

If you want it done right. :) I got a question for you Herm. DO they use nitrogen for tires in Nascar? Just got new tires this weekend on the truck and they list nitrogen tire inflation. It's supposed to not change pressure with temperature swings.
When you say 60 and 30 are you talking about the laps that are run before you have to change them? Or is that the diameter of the tire?

Modifieds seem to be more fun and less tire work than late models. But I do see a lot of Mod guys heat cycling tires for optimal usage.Blume they have three sets of tires on the go at all times. Late model guys just burn a set every main event.

That old tire machine is easier for tires under 17 " diameter. I used one till 09 when most my customers had 14s 15s 16s
So you take the air out instead of letting it out ? (j/k) I had the same tire machine. Don't have to be fancy to get the job done.

My dad would air them up and bounce them like a basket ball for about 5 minutes to seat tires .

Grinding tires at the track is where a lot of guy's ruin their brand new expensive tires...imo
No tire that has 50 flat spots around the tire is gonna be fast no matter what the car's set-up.
The grinder rotates clockwise and has to go across the contact patch to sharpen the drive edges blocks of that particular tire.
Dragging the grinder back and fourth across the tire ruins that tire.
I see it in almost everyone's videos...btw
