Is it best to buy from a nursery or ok to buy from box store like Home Depot? We are new to gardening/landscaping so didn't know if we should start with cheaper plants from a box store. Our backyard is completely dirt right now so we are starting with nothing and trying to landscape on our own. Is there a place you'd recommend in the Raleigh area? Thanks for making these videos- we just started binge watching them and they are very helpful!
Shop where you want to shop. I do like supporting local businesses, but I also know many of the great nurseries and people who grow the plants for box stores. They are all grown with care in the US.
Fall is my favorite season especially after the hot and humid weather we have had! I started planting some plants now! Your videos and information is always helpful!
Jim I live in California zone 9 I recently over the summer bought 2 sweet olive trees been having issues with rust fungus . Have treated but if they don't make it through the winter I want to try again when do you recommend I should purchase and plant . Wife grew up in the South and we been wanting to get this super fragrant plant in our yard as a hedge between neighbors. Thank you . California newbie couple
This advice should include transplanting as well. I tried relocating some plants, but a few plants didn’t survive in the 90 degrees heat wave. I also bought some plants from the store that almost dried out in the pot. Best to wait until the fall, which means late October or November. In September, there’s a thing called Indian summer where all time high temperatures last for a few weeks after a week or two of cooler temperatures that turned out to be a false indicator of fall’s arrival.
Jim, you make a lot of sense (in addition to speaking about relevant and interesting topics and knowing lots about gardening). Thanks so much for your videos!
I agree, Jim. I love the Fall. I think it’s my favorite time of year, not because it’s my birthday, but football, school starting, planting, and starting lawns. Here in So. California it is obviously different than in the south, but some things are the same. Blessings and Thanks for all you share with us. ❤️
Awesome Jim!!! Just when I thought I had maxed out my garden budget with the last bulb and seed order..... here you go making all kinds of sense as to why we need to plant in the fall, encouraging us to plant some more🤦♀️...to the NURSERY 😅🦸♀️
Zone 6b(?)Toronto, Canada. Plant a lot in Fall cause of sales - never as good as U.S. sales. Yes, still pretty warm daytime, but cools down nightly. Plants do very well. By Spring it's like they're stronger.
UPS just dropped off 3 Shi Shi Gashira white camellias, 3 Autumn Ivory Encore azaleas, a Lunar Lights Sterling Moon begonia today and I have a Little Honey Oakleaf Hydrangea and a Holy Grail Hibiscus coming at the end of this month. I am in zone 8b and it's still hot and humid here but all but the hibiscus is going under a river birch tree so I think it will be okay. I'm going to take your advice and plant them now. I must say however, finding plants you have your heart set on can be difficult to find still.
I live in NY and our falls are cold. We even get snow in October. So I think this advice should be zone specific. All good in the south but what about the north? Is it safe when our falls and really random?
I live in Michigan and fall is an excellent time to plant, divide and move, transplant. Get it done by early to mid October and you’ll be fine. Don’t forget to add mulch and dried leaves to the root zone for winter protection and you still have to make sure they are not ever drying out until the ground freezes.
I live in zone 7A in the north of Georgia, my lawn is full of weeds and patches, I would like to put up new grass, is fall a good time to seed my lawn? Also what type of grass would you recommend Jim? P.S I love your videos!
I just planted 6 Bono hydrangeas in the front of the house. After 4 days in the ground, one of them looks like it’s struggling. They were all planted the same, watered the same. Any idea what it could be?
Great advise! I just planted a limelight today! And of course we follow your challenge. Thank you for your time. That plant selection looks great. Can't wait to see the final project.
Perfect explanation! I'm in eastern NC and we got a little tease of cooler weather for a day or two, now back to extreme heat and humidity. LOL I'm dying out here! Truly look forward to cooler temperatures.
Very timely, I was wondering whether timing was right to order and plant marvel mahonia or wait until spring. I've never grown this plant before. I live in northern NJ.
Never understood why more people in the South don't plant in the fall. I garden in 8b where summers are brutal. The things I plant in spring were unavailable in fall or some annuals like zinnias. Don't know about gardening in the North. Winters in Michigan where I went to grad school were fierce. It may depend on whether you can get nursery orders before frost.
Maybe I should recommend 10 or more applications of chemicals a year like the lawn channels on youtube🤣. I can actually hand pull that small space, but I haven't this late summer
Totally agree! Problem is most garden centers may not have what you need in their inventory. Heavy on trees, camellias, and encore azaleas, but not spring/summer bloomers like Oak-leaf hydrangeas. Any ideas?
I would ask them to order things for you or perhaps drive out a little further. My nursery friends say they are getting good orders right now. So someone definitely is still bringing things in
I think #3 the ground is still warm air temp is cool is the strongest point. That totally makes sense!
Good points
How far late would you say is too late to plant in Fall?
Also a good time to score plants on clearance !
Absolutely!
yeah, Home depot has 50% on some by October/Nov.
The concept that the soil is warm even though the days are cooler is one that newbies like me might want to think about. Great education. Thanks!
I only plant stuff in the spring but I see why I need to change my way of thinking. Great information!
Excelente! Thank you so much for sharing ❤️
Planted 2 Tea olives, and 32 plants and started a walking path today! Sheesh!
Do I need to fertilize a new zoysia lawn this fall?
Those choices look wonderful!

What zone are you
I will take this advice and get to planting! Thanks!

I think we’re experiencing that now. It cooled down end of August, only to have 90F temps this week (I’m in South Jersey).
@@Kylie4Queen It's only an Indian Summer if you've had a frost and then it got warm again.
@@gaiachild3950 yup, that’s exactly what Indian Summer is - the frost is what gives it its name.
Jim, you make a lot of sense (in addition to speaking about relevant and interesting topics and knowing lots about gardening). Thanks so much for your videos!
Will these rules apply to transplanting also? I’m getting ready to transplant many things from my existing garden to my future home.
I find most plants experience less shock when transplanting in early fall...
Thanks, Jim. Usually, when I see you starting your plants, I know I need to get ready in 8b. You are pure motivation as always!👍🏾😁
Hopefully we will have a long cool fall to work with!
Learned a lot in a short amount of time, thank you!
Great info as usual Jim!

Thanks for watching!!
I’ve been forbidden to buy anything new for the rest of the season, so I’ll have to settle for transplanting, or dividing something...😉
That is still planting🤣. Good luck with everything!!
Me too!! Haha gonna have to sneak some in while hubby is at work 😎🤣”its been there, you just now noticed it” 😉

Sometimes better prices as well!!
Absolutely! And thank you again! you keep making sense... 😅
👋😃
Can you come and see me I need advice on my yard to put in a drip system I am in kenly n.c

Great tips!
Just what I needed to know right now! 8b 🌸🌿🌸
Thanks for watching!!

Yes, it is definitely sparse out there. Nurseries I'm visiting are half fabric

You can plant if the plant is hardy in your area. Check your zone and the zone of the plants. It's hard to believe but they will do fine.

I wish I'd waited to plant my Hydrangea tree. It was beautiful, flowered then turned brown and I think its dead. Expensive also!
Can’t wait to see you plant that little bunch you have there, and great advice as always 👌

I cannot wait to see these in the ground, they're going to be stunning Jim :-)
Great points and tips as always Jim. Looking forward to your planting series!💯💪🏾💪🏾
Thank you so much. I live in zone 7b (Dallas GA) as well and I am just now thinking of planting some perennials.
Very timely, I was wondering whether timing was right to order and plant marvel mahonia or wait until spring. I've never grown this plant before. I live in northern NJ.
I would think that a marvel Mahonia should be spring planted for you. You are where it is marginal
@@JimPutnam Thanks Jim, I wasn't certain.

LOVIN' the hair! 😉 Nice!
But what about watching football?
Oh bummer, i was hoping you would tell us what you’re planting.
They are going in tomorrow morning. That video will be up soon.
🌱👌🏽💚
