Magnificent piece of wood, I’m glad you rescued it.
Everyone of those would make a beautiful live edge table . Even the last piece would make an interesting two section coffee type table .
Most sawyers go bonkers finding a nail, Matt chuckles and keeps sawing. Beautiful slabs.
Blades cost $200. Each of those slabs are worth 10k. Matt will go through every blade he’s got to get through that log.
I guess nails, bolts and wire cables are not an issue with you, Matt ...?
Do you leave them in there or do you dig 'em out ?
@@tittyskillet3413 he buys carbide toothed blades he can cut metal and not destroy his blade
@@billhatcher2984 i asked him about that recently when he was cutting the logs for the 2 guys that make stuff. He said the blades cost $160 and they last about 1 to 1.5 years. I dont know if they are carbide or not
Would be cool to follow one of those slabs from the sawmill through to its final destination as a table top or whatever it gets made into.
Some the solid quilty, flamey portion would be incredible for us guitar builders. And, YES, you deserve bragging rights for the amount of craftsmanship and ingenuity you've shown on this channel. You are a talented person all the time.

When I was a teen (I'm 70) maple was considered trash lumber and good for nothing; oak, walnut, cherry, and cedar were the desired woods to have to build furniture, but things change and what people want one decade the don't the next. This maple is outstanding, and very desirable in my opinion. I always enjoy your woodworking shows, from the mill to the shop.
Is maple what they use for baseball bats ?
@@johnking8679a lot of the time they use ash, but sometimes maple or other hardwoods are used

I never heard that before about maple.. . Most kitchen table tops and chairs were made from Maple when I was growing up...

Finally a log that out figured anything you've ever cut. That's going to make some really great furniture.
You have every right to brag on your personal accomplishments! You designed and built an amazing sawmill. AND IT WAS OUTSIDE YOUR CRAFT! We would expect you to build a beautiful set of cabinets, tables or furniture. That is your craft. As a career construction welder, was impressed that you did so well. Steel has its own way of working. It draws when you weld and wants to twist as the pieces get longer. YOU DID WELL!!

That wire was almost certainly a dipole antenna. In the early days of radio such antennas were common and lacking any other means to get the antenna high enough to get a solid signal, people often used trees in lieu of a mast, or telescoping pole.
This is by far the best looking log you have ever cut, absolutely beautiful grain/figure. Thanks for sharing.
That log is amazing. Unbelievable figure!
I had a handmade pirates pistol I got all the hardware and barrel from Dixie Gun Works, and I got the curly red maple stock blank from a friend and another friend put it together and I finished the wood. I took the words seriously and hand rubbed 13 coats of boiled linseed oil, into the wood, it took a month, I can't remember it's been so long ago, but you could see yourself in the shine on the wood and the curl virtually jumped out at you it was a beautiful piece, unfortunately it disappeared in my last move it was a 500$ piece , A real operating .54 calibre muzzle loading single shot pistol and would put 3 balls into a fist sized group 15 yards. Good self defense arm for close in shots at bear size targets, that load was 50 gains weight 3f black powder and a 400 grain Maxi ball, the barrel twist was 1in 48. it had a 10 inch browned barrel.
Matt, that's one purty stack of slabs. The wife and I sure enjoy watching all that you do. With a wife, 3 kids, home reno, and all the irons you have in the fire, when do you sleep? As a beginner at wood working, I just love seeing the fresh cut slabs when the water hits them. Keep up the awsome work, and we will keep watching.

Holey Moley! I'm sitting here, green with envy. I fell into a few spalted maple logs myself, had them slabbed and they have now dries for about 4 years. I've got pieces that have great grain expression - but nothing as figured as this one... You lucky bugger, you!

it would be great to see these slabs when they're furniture or bar tops or whatever they become. Maybe you could show some of it off? My friend makes Flint lock guns and is always interested in the figure that can come from a log like this.

I've watched a ton of your videos and this is a testament to your sawmill and your talent. Few mills could tackle this log. You picked the best angle of attack. What beautiful wood!
I've never seen slab after slab of the most interesting wood you could imagine. Mother nature gave you hardwood, with the exception of the giant rot pocket. Not a fan of epoxy, but epoxy will preserve this unique element of the slabs.
I am so happy for you because this log has money written all over it.

The only channel that can talk about wood, figure, crotch etc and not be age restricted.
Awesome log! I ran into one similar but not as figured it had curl, spalting and ambrosia.
I've just seen my new dining table, my new lounge table, my new coffee tables and the sets of occasional (side) tables.
Now all I need is the house to go with them.
That's an incredible set of slabs. Wow. Once it's sanded and finished.... man oh man. What an amazing save from the chipper!

It’s awesome to see how that blade just rips through the log even though two wires found.
Just a crazy idea: to level the centers of the crotches, why not use a spirit-level 3 to 4-foot-long, you don't care too much for, drill some mounting holes through its body for screwing it onto the log at center height, instead of using a tape measure. The only thing you have to watch is the bubble and you don't have to remember two measurements and then calculate how you have to adjust it before it's level. One bubble, no hassle, just two screws, and I think a carpenter could find those very easily.
I've used my level as a fence to cut sheets and put a screw in a block going through the handle, no need to modify your level

The limb you point out to on around 25:00, could be a fence pole? The tree swallowed pole and wire, which could be part of a fence around a field or so. Very nice video, lots of beautiful discoveries.

Matt, This one of the best logs I've seen you cut in quite some time. The quality and uniformity of the figure was really nice. Too bad the metal was in it, but the blue stain will add to the unique look. Pretty nice for what I thought was a junk log. Well done!!!

I enjoy watching you saw logs. What do you do with them next? Do you air dry for years or kiln dry? What do you do with the lumber then? Do you use it for your own furniture or do you sell the planks?

I would think that the most vaulable slabs financed he new property and the shop! just a guess??
Quite a change from when you were using the cheap blades and had to replace the blade every 3 logs.
It would be so cool to be able to see what can be created from this wood. The gorgeous patterns in those slabs would be wonderful in a guitar or mandolin! I hope one day you can collaborate with other craftspeople to create a video that goes from log to finished project.

Have you ever thought about making electric guitar bodies with some of the off cuts of this maple? I think some of the smaller pieces could be bookmatched to make some really funky guitars.
Just catching up after a camping trip. Those are going to make some phenomenal tables! Even I cringe at the thought of cutting them into furniture parts.
