This Old-School Puerto Rican Restaurant Is Essential for Pork Fanatics | Food Skills

- When Anthony Bourdain visited 188 Cuchifritos in the Bronx for an episode of Parts Unknown, he summed up its appeal with one simple proclamation: "I don’t know any place porkier." The old-school lunch counter specializes in Puerto Rican and Dominican cuchifritos, or fried pig parts ranging from ultra-crispy skin (chicharrón), to chewy pig ears and blood sausage. Serving the local community for more than 35 years, 188 Cuchritos offers a stark contrast to the swarms of franchises that have popped up in the neighborhood: hand-painted signs, a loyal army of regulars, and a father-son duo at the helm of the family-operated business. Here, Jose Coto and Jose Jr. tell the story of how the restaurant persevered through the decades and ultimately won Bourdain's co-sign as "the center of the pork universe."

Chinese bbq.... literally a dying art
First We Feast pickled foods. The art of pickling.👍🏻
Epicurious did a video with hot sauce expert Noah Chaimberg of Heatonist. You should have him come on hot ones to dissect all of the sauces!
I think this is one of the best stories you have done. I think continuing on with the small business old school mom and pop type places is great. I personally would love to see some footage from the divey places in Mexico just south of the American border like Tijuana. So much strange coverage about immigration and border security in the U.S.. It would be nice to see a true family business making sweet food.
I’m Puerto Rican so I’m happy to see my peoples foods represented on this channel. Makes me very happy!
Just Your Average Gamer I saw a notification that said Puerto Rican and I immediately clicked the video jaja
Girl I'm Mexican American, and let me tell you toda la Familia here in Milwaukee we Love Puerto Rican Food, our favorite is Arroz con Gandules , God Bless❤
rugus722 I’m a dude but I still feel. I’m waiting for a Fat jibarito review from one of the guys on this channel. Wild be great to see
It's endearing to see the impact a man as Bourdain had even on the life of individuals... loved the man.
I'm glad this series is back. There's a lot of personality driven food or food adjacent shows to watch, so I appreciate having something else in the high production short form/medium-short form range. The lack of a central personality allows for peace to be a more quiet relaxing product, which I appreciate.
WEPA!!!! Where the Boricuas at?!? 🙌🏽🇵🇷🙌🏽🇵🇷
Recently was at amadeos slash prior rafael hernandez place . Did not know about the cuchifritos restaurant down the street definitely will check out when in the neigbhorhood muchas gracias for the heads up saludos y feliz navidad junto con un prosspero ano nuevo lleno de salud
WEEEEEEEPAAAAAA!
didn't he say his Cuban 🤔🤔
Yoooooooo
I'm half cuban🇨🇺🇨🇺🇨🇺🇨🇺
There's alot if history here. It's more than just food. Its about culture, family, tradition, immigrants looking for a better life. I love it. 💖😍
Everything looks amazing but also so sweet how the son says he plans on staying there forever- that’s really awesome❤️🇵🇷💙
You’re doing it papo. You’re filling your father’s shoes and you’re growing taller. Keep up the good work and the family tradition. Next time I go to NYC, I’m hitting up cuchifrito!
Que bella mi gente! Que rico un buen mofonguito ahora🤤. God bless Puerto Rico, God bless my Puertorros! Arriba Boricua! 🇵🇷
I ❤️ NY
I wish I could find a shirt to express my sentiments.
Can't tell if this is an ironic comment lol
@@carmeloshin It's a joke.
That would never catch on
atomly same here it’s like kind of nostalgic feeling you know . Iam in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 but I ❤️NY
@@carmeloshin r/whoooosh kinda

There are still a lot of Dominican spots like this in NYC, but not many Puerto Rican ones. Hope to get over there soon to try it
And now Mexicans is taking over 💪🏽
Hector Hernandez Mexican food is good but nothing beats carribean food 🤤
Wow all this food reminds me of my late pop's 🇵🇷 Puerto Rican 🇵🇷 cooking. God I miss it so much! R.i.P pops Justino Ortiz😪
I miss Anthony. My heart hurts so much. Thank you for sharing your food .
You should come to Puerto Rico and feature their amazing cuisine.
Icarris totally ! Come to 🇵🇷!!!
This was very interesting. I loved how they explained the history and recipes behind their own spot and then also walked around and showcased other hot spots in their neighborhood. 👍
Interesting a Cuban gentleman cooking our Puerto Rico cuisine how wonderful. ❤️ I’d travel from PR to NY just to eat food from home. 😂
Ain’t nothin like Puerto Rican food from the Bronx!
Insight not even Puerto Rican food from the island?
I mean... when you actually visit the island, it gets better.
Being a Puerto Rican man.. Married to a European woman I can say that places like this are essential for my people to keep our culture alive my wife and I teach our children not only my heritage but hers.. ...gotta have Puerto Rican....Germans ....Luckily my beautiful wife cooks all my favorite foods.....
This looks so good! I wish they didn't use soy bean oil since I'm allergic to that but kudos to them for having an authentic Puerto Rican restaurant!
Yes I’m Puerto Rican, I practically live in New York and LA, it’s hard for my parents to let me go to the Bronx because they lived in NY 20 years ago when it was much different. I can’t wait to go and see this place before the rent kicks the community out
Don't forget to hit up Arthur's ave down the street for some italian food and the bronx zoo which is close by within walking distance
RIP Tony. Great storyteller. 🙏
Pernil y arroz con gondoles y maduro is life! Love Puerto Rican soul food! R.I.P Anthony Bourdain
I'm glad I don't live close because I would have a big problem with moderation. I love authentic family restaurants like this.
I’m from Inglewood California and I discovered your awesome restaurant thanks to Mr Anthony Bourdain 😭💔😭💔😭💔😭💔😭💔😢💐😢💐
This is a great story about a personal business and the owner with his son. This spot is nothing special as it’s a dime a dozen in the Bx and in Spanish Harlem. Bourdain probably decided to highlight this one because it’s the Bronx and the large PR community there and yes, this is one type of successful personal business ran by PRs and DRs.
Yea although papi is actually Cuban not Puerto Rican
So happy to see this video. I go to 188 every couple of weeks when I'm jonesing for morcilla aka Puerto Rican blood sausage. Always walk out with over $50 worth of cuchifrito. Been going since 1983. The only Puerto Rican cuchifrito spot left now in the Beonx. Well worth the trip and the wait in line. Fantastic food. 🇵🇷🤗
Sorry for typo...the Bronx
Puerto Rican here from Los Angeles. Can’t wait to go back again! 🇵🇷 🐸
Ive been eating there for years....Food is GREAT!
Not only the pork...Try the steak(bistec) sandwich if you get a chance
And theyre open late
My old hood!
This is so awesome. Kudos to you guys. Love from Australia - live forever!
Loved the video but it also made me sad and nostalgic. All of my grandparents generation and some of my uncles and aunts had small businesses of the same sort and my generation and my parents generation has abandoned that way of life and a lot of knowledge and culture has been lost.
Thankfully, in the US, people seem to be aware of this and are fighting to keep small businesses open. If I ever visit NYC, I'll definitively make a visit.
No one abandoned anything they all got bought out by greedy mega corps.
Wish we had one of these in melbourne Australia
visit NYC... better yet, visit Puerto Rico. Both are awesome!
OMG. that's gorgeous. I haven't had cuchifritos & mofongo in YEARS. I miss living in NYC.
good to see a real cuchifritos in business still, the classic one on 116th just doesn’t cut it anymore and isnt as good as others (not to mention it’s all dominican cooks but the restaurant still says its all puerto rican 😂)
the son is lucky to have that father
the father is luck to have such a son
I’ve probably eaten everything on their menu😂 this place is the best just don’t focus on the long ass line! Love this place 💙
I grew up in Puerto Rico and I miss the Puerto Rican food. This is my kind of soul food. Good luck with you Cuchifritos!
Boricuaaaaaaaaaaaa!
🤘🇵🇷🤘🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷
Pa que tu lo sepas xD
My mouth is watering just from watching this.
I LOVE 188 Cuchifritos!! Went there all the time when I lived in the Bronx. Great food and great people!
This used to be my spot back in the 90s.
I LOVE Anthony Bourdain! I saw that episode of "Parts Unknown" with this restaurant. It was so cool!
Love it and miss it. Miss it because I have been living in Arkansas since 1982. I have to make my own.
Wow I’m very proud of this family. To the father, job well done sir. 👍🇵🇷 🇨🇺
a Cuban family with a Puerto Rican food Restaurant, good job.
Beautiful family and legacy!
That restaurant has been on 188th forever ! My father and I love pasteles. When I would visit my parents. I would stop by this restaurant for some pasteles to bring and eat with my father. This place is an institution. I hope that it's able to stay at it's current location . It's part of the fabric of the Bx. Thanks for shinning a beautiful light on a beautiful place, I call home. Bronx, N.Y.
i got to eat here a few years ago during my first trip to NY. DELICIOUS FOOD!!!
I love it when the military funds my favorite Millennial™ content!
Grew up here and was always hanging on Fordham Rd. You could smell the yumminess before you even saw the storefront. WEPA!!!
DIOS los cuide arriba comida PUERTO RICO from LES MANHATTAN.nothing but love up the BX.
I grew up with all types of pork dishes from Puerto Rico which were much better than anything in a restaurant but I'm glad these places still exist but nothing like home cooking from Puerto Rico.
omg, the pork and fried chicken looks amazing!
As a Dominican i love Puerto rican food!!
Great to see n hear of such a Great place, where are used to go years ago every Sunday after church services!
I have been there and it’s amazing and impossible to forget . It was closer place I have from 🇵🇷 I love you and miss u guys GoD Bless!

Thanks so much for spotlighting these great small businesses! It's great to see my old neighborhood valorized like this!
Guy walking past @4:36 😂😂
🎅🏻 *Why is Santa always so jolly?* 🎅🏻
Because he knows where all the naughty Puerto Rican girls live. 🎅🏻
Mad respect for this family.
Amen thank God Beatriz from Brooklyn
Right up the block from where I grew up 👌👌 eaten there plenty of times. So delicious both places!!
Puerto Rican food is the most slept on food of all time. Easily the tastiest in the world I'll fight anyone tryna say otherwise.
Great to see the pride taken in their work.
Anthony Bourdain
One of the first things I did, was scroll down to the comment section to see the boricuas/nuyoricans representing and I was NOT disappointed 🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷
One of your best videos, very touching
God bless you guys and your business
Awesome! In Bulgaria we have same things... and this cuchifritos we call them Pruujkii or Juumeerki
Man that looks interesting...
I will have a hard time finding such a restaurant in Europe ^^
A really good Mexican or carribean place should have similar food, tho of course not entirely the same
If you ever go to Barcelona, you should definitely visit "el pachuco". It's mexican, but oh my lord!
South spain, not that hard to find.
From food/travel shows it looks like Europe has a lot of multi generation family owned restaurants.
*R.I.P. Anthony Bourdain*
Glad to be Puerto Rican 👌🏽❤️
Not many Puerto Rican restaurants left in the Bronx. I can't wait to hop a train downtown to try ur food!!
Wow. Never had any desire to visit NYC but this could change my mind. I have a PR friend and everything he cooks is delicious.
This is the only cuchifrito i go to 🌟❤️❤️ always a line gotta try it when ur in Fordham 🇵🇷

Wish to have this here in Downtown Los Angeles California!!
American, just as we are a melting pot, so are ALL the foods we eat, latino, european, asian, mexican, south american, oriental, indian... IT'S ALL SO GOOD!
Come here for lunch about once a week. Best part of working in the Bronx. Very cheap too!
My cholesterol raised just in the first second ;-)
If Anthony Bourdain approved, I approve. WEPPAAAAAA 😂 🇵🇷
🌺🇵🇷🌺🇵🇷🌺our food is one of the best!!!
Thank god this series is back!!
We don't have this authenticity of flavors in Wisconsin as far restaurants.I'm definitely going to cuchifritos❤
Anthony bourdain had such a great life, eating food, traveling and more. It sucks that depression had to ruin that greatness in him.
I'm so glad you are continuing these series!
I want that food, but this video was also just heartwarming. Nice work to the editors and subjects.
I need to visit this one day , food lookin' good and proud neighborhood too. Nice !
I’m from the Bay Area but I always felt like I was NY at heart!
