I've driven some of those country roads in Western Kentucky, and it's hard enough to get anywhere without all that debris. Especially at night. This video really shows how frightening these situations can be.

Would love to see this video reiterated, but with a realtime satellite map indicating your position with an overlay of the storm and the tornado's position. I feel like with pure nighttime videos like this, that extra step would add some much-needed clarity.

I tracked Nathan's position using store names after he turned into North West Mayfield, on exit 24. He drove DIRECTLY IN FRONT of the path of the wedge.
He takes exit 24 into NW Mayfield at 1:58:50 as the tornado is moving towards the rural South West side of Mayfield.
He's at the main crossing of 121 with Paducah Rd at 2:01:08 in the video. The twister was now inside Mayfield at 9.28pm.
It was horrible seeing cars going South or South West into Mayfield at this point.
At 2:02:06 someone turns South West onto E Housman St directly into the path of the tornado. I really hope that person is safe. At this point, if the camera had panned right, it would have shown the front edge just a few hundred metres away, as it moved through Mayfield town centre.
The power goes out at 2:02:13 which should be exactly 9.29pm and 7 seconds, cross referenced using the timecoded CCTV from inside the bank in Mayfield town centre.
You dodged the front edge by 1 minute.

2:16:33 - “I’m outta here…. Screw this… I’m done.” *BEST CALL you could make* !!! Low situational awareness, sketchy road system, low visibility… perfect time to call it a wrap! Everyone likes the chase, but it should never come at the expense of bad situational awareness. A great lesson for newer chasers. (I don’t mean to imply IRL is a novice chaser… he is experienced… I meant that for young guns coming to this channel years from now just getting into the chase scene)

This took place last year and it was really bad, @2:36:00 it may look bad but it was far worse + lack of services/help from a certain 'organization' we all know made it far worse for these folks who lost everything.
For weeks they were trying to match up owners with their pets, 2 men came from California to try and catch as many cats as they could. Soon the local area shelters were overwhelmed. Some, if not most of the animals that had already been them were sent to shelters farther away to make room for those from Mayfield.
There was huge need for basic necessities for people also.
To be honest I don't know how these people made a living before the tornado. The factory that Nax mentioned was a candle factory. As far as I recall it was the only factory nearby.
About the same time the Amazon building was getting hit in Illinois. Cell phones were not allowed to be brought in so no one knew what was happening outside.

All I can think about are the lives that are gone especially those at the candle factory who were told to stay in place to make something so trivial as a candle. This really shows how quickly a person's life can change. I'm the weather enthusiast in my family & noticed chasers live streaming from that area & how unusual it was for Dec. We live NE of that area . Kept telling family, "it's violent in KY, sure hope it disipates before it gets here". Our storms typically track from the SW. It did go north of us! Also, I high!y suggest to always be prepared with a tote of essentials & always have a weather radio. I'm sure viewers of this channel do! @John Brad Depending on how far back off the road they were, is a good indication of if they're still standing. The tornado passed North East by these houses, in between the interstate and the road that Nathan is on at this time. The gap in between those roads is approximately one mile, so the homes closest to the road likely made it, whereas the ones set back just a hundred metres or more were likely hit. I'm sure that someone from Wingo, Mayfield or Benton could answer your question directly.

    • @OriginalRaveParty
      @OriginalRaveParty 2 роки тому +11

@@Tcrror It looked like it to me too, though EF4 is still considered devastating. From speaking to another chaser, it seems like the Enhanced Fujita scale has many known flaws, but it's based on certain damage conditions rather than wind speed, or gate to gate shear. If a 300mph tornado happens in a field and does little damage, it gets a low rating. El Reno in 2013 was rated as an EF3 even though it claimed 8 lives, and was the widest tornado ever recorded. If it had happened over property, it most certainly would have been rated EF5.

You aren’t a kidding Laura. The tornado was right on him to his right hitting town or the edge of it when he turned off 121/Castleman Bypass onto 58. I was on edge of my seat saying go go go. I have to go back and look at the video but the lights at junction of 58 and 121 went out as he was approaching and the other lights in the area. I think at that time the tornado was probably crossing I69 and hitting the candle factory and fixing to roll through town. If he went straight on 121 he would have came to 80 bypass (Between Murray and Mayfield) and 97 (Paris Highway) and that’s the area I live in on 97. We didn’t get hit there luckily. He would have been able to look back over Mayfield and see the storm. I am glad he made it safely around all that.

Great video and coverage/narrative work! Good driving, too. Employing "chaser" language is forgivable. There's no adrenaline rush like running 80 - 90 MPH , trying to outrun a tornado. Especially at night! Very smart move, turning around, BTW.
In the mid seventies through 1980, I was a chaser in OK. I was tied to the NWS, KRMG radio station in Tulsa and REACT. Had an FM business radio for the weather service and radio station, as well as a citizens band radio for REACT. No cell phones, no onboard radar, no GPS.
It is a lonely feeling when it is just you, your weather expertise and your gut feelings. The radios helped, but in the end, it was all on me. I kept the chase truck - a 68 Chevy with a 396 V-8 - full of fuel, as well as a trio of powerful lantern style lights [high powered flashlights with a big battery] at all times. Had an array of tools, such as shovels, straps and a chainsaw.

This was the scariest storm I’ve ever sat through. Storms don’t usually bother me. Often, I’ll sit outside and watch them roll through. I live in a bottom, so they bounce right over me. I’m a little over an hour south of mayfield. When this came through and I neglected to go to the storm cellar, I was afraid that I’d made a BIG mistake. The way the air changed in an INSTANT was creepy. I just prayed for about ten minutes straight. The county to the south of me, and probably about 8 miles away as the crow flies, was tore up. They were without water & electricity for about a week. I heard that storm barrel through. I was just on the northern edge of the storm. Prayers for everyone not as lucky as I got.

I was brave to donate money to Red Cross to help those tornado victims and sadly this all took place 2 weeks before Christmas and couldn't imagine what everyone was going through and the loss of life that tragically shook my core. Never in my life, I hope nothing like this happens again and again. Seeing images of this tornado in my head was the scariest thing I have ever been shocked by based on how massive the tornado was. After driving through the path of it at Mayfield, and then outrunning it Eastwards on 58, at this point Nathan had turned somewhat North East again after talking to the guy at the junction of 58 and 402.
He was basically travelling back towards the twister, which had been parallel with him since Mayfield.
After the tornado exited Mayfield via the North East corner, crossing over 121 right by where that car had turned into E Housman St earlier in the video at 2:02:06, it took 19 minutes to travel to, and strike a glancing blow on the North West corner of Benton.
It was easy mathematics at this point because Mayfield to Benton is 20 miles, and the twister was moving across the ground at approximately 60mph, so 1 mile per minute. Nathan drove around 2/3 of the way to Benton in around 13 minutes. If he'd carried on going North up that road, he might have been within one minute of the twister ... yet again.

This tornado was an absolute monster. It tracked for about 165 miles. The constant lightning reminds me of my youth when we lived in South Florida. We'd watch the heat lightning for hours in the humid evenings from storms out in the Atlantic or coming from the Everglades. The sky was lit up constantly with lightning but there was no thunder. I can surely hear the thunder with this one. The people I know in La Grange, KY were praying for these people that night. I believe ALL Kentuckians were praying for Mayfield that night. I Know I was. Remember, if you are outside and you feel the hair on your neck and arms stand up, you had better hit the ground and lay flat or you will complete the circuit between Heaven and Hell.

51 would have turned you back into the storm, and you very likely would have intercepted the tornado just northeast of Cayce, where it did incredible damage/ground scouring at EF4+ level.
Also, get a competent "navigator" next time. Old Man River didn't seem to want to give you any clues that I-69 is also called Purchase Pkwy (as clearly labeled on Google Maps in late 2021) until you told him you were already on it. 1:57:04 the candle factory became the center of attention by this tornado when workers from what I heard were told to stay at the factory when the alarms sounded. Many of em wanted to go home to get to somewhere safe and sturdy, but was threatened by managers that they would be fired if they left. And then when the tornado hit, 8 or 10 coworkers lost their lives as the building collapsed after swaying left and right by the tornado's winds ... First the lightning lit up the sky, and then it got quiet in between where no sounds or chirps of animals and insects making noises, and then the wind gusts picked up and the power flickered and went out as the tornado is hitting the candle factory. And then it tracked directly through the heart of Mayfield afterwards, increasing in intensity and strength between Mayfield and Benton... The candle factory was a shocking and nightmarish sight ... 1:59:18 that lightning strike was unbelievably too close as Nathan exits I-69 on 58 towards 121 ... 2:00:43 the candle factory is about to get hit by the tornado 🌪️ , and then the power goes out at 2:01:53 after Nathan runs the red light near the Shell gas station and the tornado enters the city of Mayfield at 2:02:10 causing EF4 to near EF5 damage then directly towards downtown destroying everything in its path ... And then Nathan turns onto 121 at 2:02:54 to outrun an escape the tornado in time E or NE of its path which is at 1 mile wide ... Nathan and then the police officer a little while later run for their lives escaping as fast as they could away from the tornado that's a mile or less behind them speeding 60 mph right on top of them, while the police officer and Nathan speed 80 to 90 or 100 mph on the back road 🛣️ ... 2:05:10 the tornado enters downtown Mayfield at peak intensity destroying the church, courthouse, theatre, and historic buildings and then at 2:05:55 it exits Mayfield towards the town of Benton and rest was history.. Note: the tornado itself (being the second one after the first dissipated from the same parent supercell thunderstorm ⛈️) travelled on the ground for a whopping nearly 200 miles while this long lived supercell thunderstorm traveled across 4 states in couple more hours from its lifetime to the end ... 2:08:34 I hope that police officer had escaped the tornado to somewhere safer and was okay as he was panicking and running for his life ... You can imagine the fear both Nathan and the police officer had as they were outrunning the tornado 🌪️

Yeah it was freaky for most of us and a lot of people actually brushed it off. I mean, who in the heck expects a tornado two weeks before Christmas?
But it is a great lesson in that these storms can strike at any time, any season. One hit Clarksville, TN in January back in ‘99 and tore up a lot of the downtown area where my folks grew up.
I’m just glad that this storm began to weaken when it did. It was right on track to plow through the town I live in.
If you can believe it, March 18 we had ANOTHER bad outbreak and a tornado touched down less than half a mile from me! Only an EF1 but my parents lost part of their roof. 😱

That’s what the other storm chasers that have died thought

Jason there have been very few that have died storm chasing. Those that did died what they love and helping other folks. Did you ever think what might have happened to the couple and infant child that I helped out of harms way after the event? Of course not because people like you are so focused on the negative and not the good. Ive done this for 30 years , i know what im doing. If something happens someday Im OK with that. Have a good day.

@@StormChaserIRL Come on, man. I come back to your video every couple of months, because there's no other video out there that shows the entire, unedited sequence of events and decisions that lead to a storm chaser becoming the chased, especially by a historically strong nighttime tornado.
It's ok to admit that you got lucky, because you absolutely did.

@@StormChaserIRL you can be experienced and aware, but we all know mother nature does what she wants to whomever she wants. You took 121 and barely dodged the front edge of a 60mph+ ground speed tornado. There is always luck involved in storm chasing. What if that road happened to be blocked for construction? You’re sol then. Ask Dan Robinson about El Reno. He’s experienced, but I guarantee you he will say he got lucky. Had a similar experience to you.

Wow brother that ride you're in sounds like it's pumping out some very serious horsepower and torque. That's exactly what you need in that situation

Yes. I tracked this moment in my breakdown of the timings that I posted, which start just slightly afterwards, as Nathan exits into NW Mayfield and then drives across the path of the tornado.
It's heartbreaking to think that those poor people are still alive at this moment, and they won't be within 5 minutes :(
I'm glad that the weather and science systems we have nowadays can help, but we've all heard the rumours and reports that they were being pressured to stay at work. It's just sad.

A tragic storm that's for sure. For this video man what a light show about 34 minutes or so. Well there's a lot of it but just around that part from like 30 minutes to 34 minutes.
