Why the new sixth-gen Spike missile is a game-changer for Apache

- A sixth-generation missile is being integrated onto Apache attack helicopters, offering greater range and lethality.
The test-firing of the Spike missile from Apache was conducted both day and night at the US Army Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona over five days.
The weapon has been described as an "awesome capability" that can be a "game-changer".

Can’t wait to see our order of 2 days combat worth
The sad truth 💀
At an eye watering price
Aye they will order 25 missiles and give Ukraine another 2 billion cash
Sad truth is when this helicopter used against anything tougher than goatherders, it will be blown out the sky by portable AA missile launched by soldier. On modern warfare every vehicle and aircraft become obsolete.
Thanks for recycling the manufacturers video 😂
Man the phrase "game changer" has been used a lot recently
Especially by the Russian Military.
@@DriveByShouting Lmao when? It's only American weapons that have been described as game changers but have gone onto fail whether it's JDAM, AGM-88, HIMARS has been MIA since AD has been beefed up, only thing that gets through 1 out of 30 days of the month are storm shadows barely.
so many western "game changers", revealing themselves to be western "gay changers"
@@themarketm8382Don't lie. Himars is a game changer. Cheap price, and hard to shoot down. Look what it done to Russian air defence and howitzers
The war in Ukraine showed the real capabilities of Russian military equipment.
I think we all can agree Apache is one of the Best Combat Proven Attack Heli in the World
The 6th generation SPIKE NLOS now has an extended range of up to 50 km when launched from a helicopter and up to 32km when fired from land or naval platforms. A single operator and launcher can fire and control up to four missiles simultaneously, allowing for the element of surprise against enemy forces. Also the new Target Image Acquisition capability allows the NLOS to pick out the commander’s tank or the most important hostile asset and strike it.
Control over the sixth generation SPIKE missile can be transferred between battlefield platforms mid-flight, allowing for uninterrupted operational pace and seamless collaboration between systems. For example, if a helicopter launches the missile but flies out of the area, a ground vehicle in the same attack zone vicinity can take control of it and navigate the missile toward the target.

Thank you.
I thought it was NLOS? What’s guiding it?
Thank you for posting.
Thanks, Forces News.
We have great weapons-we just don't manufacture more than 10 of anything. You know what would REALLY impress me?-show me a cool weapon and explain how the contractors can make HUGE VOLUMES month after month. The war in Ukraine shows the errors in our defense industry, which seems geared around high-ticket systems and job creation rather than fighting and winning serious conflicts.
The UK would need to expend 4% of GDP on the military to afford large amounts of equipment like the US. But UK’s economy has already grown slowly over the last 15 years. Spending that much on the military would ruin long term economic growth for the UK
Besides, the US is allied with Britain. The UK is never going to be fighting alone. America gets stuff in mass quantities, more than enough to share with the UK and other European countries in a war
UK might have to fight a country like Argentina alone but they’re weak so that’s not really something to worry about
I think you have your evaluation backwards! The SU-57 has been a thing for a long time and yet Russia only has less than 20 in operation. They also have many other advanced weapons made in very low numbers. The US, OTH, has built more than 1000 F-35's. In Ukraine, Russia is sending troops to the front without weapons or ammo and have instructed their soldiers that it is their responsibility to provide such things. One of the items they told their soldiers to by is tampons -- to staunch the flow of blood if they're shot! I mean, it's like you have it exactly bass akwards!

@@CorePathway Ummm…what?
How about we get Brimstone on it then - best missile of all of them
Different seeker, shorter range, not as versatile
@@Orbital_Inclination Brimestone II has a 60km range. Its also faster and packs way more of a punch, plus can be launched in salvo. There is also a Brimestone III now so just imagine that things capabilities... Do some research and try again.
@@bootlegpete7984 the stated range is 40+ km. My other points still stand.
@@Orbital_Inclination The UK opted for the Javelin over the Spike years ago for infantry operations so versatility isnt an issue, plus Brimstones built in house and is Typhoon and Drone compatible. Its a no brainer.
How many will we buy? 20? 30?
Spike is a game changer cos war is a game we can all enjoy.
I believe UK artillery is also getting Spike NLOS. For the Deep Strike brigade.
It flew around the obstacle. Wicked.
Meh, BrahMos Block-III does a 105 degree turn and a direct vertical dive on Chinese targets hiding behind a Himalayan mountain. And it does that not at subsonic speeds like this missile, but at Mach 3.
Israeli Spike missiles are probably the best ATGMs.
To Robert who mentioned the javelin missile ,that’s a shoulder fired anti tank like Bazooka
Game changer.... I prefer 'revolutionary'
I like the fact that unline the Javelin, The Spike ATGM varient can be guided to a different target mid flight.
variant*
The man-portable flight time of a Javelin is maybe 15 seconds... how/why could you possibly change the target mid-flight?
@@peter.wilson look it up yourself. Israeli Spike & French MP Akeron.
That is a huge difference in range and survivability.
It is such a difference that the Indian Air Force, instead of getting their Apache, Rudra and Prachand attack helicopters equipped with the Spike NLOS is instead getting their Mi-17V5 transport helicopters equipped with Spike NLOS.
The thinking is that attack heptrs are survivable even when close to the frontline as it is (terrain masking in Himalayas against the Chinese), so better to get the transports ready to fire missiles from stand-off ranges of 40-50 km.
Britain will probably buy this instead of our own Brimstone missile.
Nice
Beautiful ❤👍🚁🚁
I wonder how many were ordering, 12?
Game changer, now where have we heard that before for weapons systems that are only effective for a short time.
No idea, I'm assuming some ill informed social media clips?
What about using the Brimstone built in the UK ????
That would only happen if the MOD wanted to pay for the weapons integration trials
@@Orbital_Inclination Yes I KNOW it has to be paid for ! !
Well I can’t wait to see the 6th gen S + Pro Max missile
Cool
Greece also changed some of the Apaches into spike NLOS. This is in order to hit air defences
Is the UK getting this in addition to JAGM? Or is that a bit optimistic?
UK, Germany are the biggest procurers of Spike
50Km range ? Well, yes that would be a “game changer”
Everything new is a "game changer" on this channel.
@@meme4one
You have understand context
Most SHORAD systems range between 10-31 miles
The Spike NLOS latest variant range is 31 miles
That means that Spike can easily target Tunguska, Panstir , Buk and Tor systems without ever getting range
Remember that Spike has small launchers that can be carried by Helo
Imagine special forces carry Spikes NLOS and simultaneously attacking the enemy key target
@@verdebusterAPfully aware yes and also very aware nobody takes helicopters into an area that we don't already have full air and ground to air superiority, manpads accepted. I can see this being used for indirect fire support, directed by ground units the same way artillery is called in or having a javalin but not having to carry it. But flying rw against shorad? Seems an unlikely scenario.
@@meme4one
No indirect first with precision missiles
its all precise targeting
@@verdebusterAP sorry indirect was the wrong term. I meant fire support. I really cannot believe anyone would fire rw when air defences haven't been already suppressed. Yes it can stand off safely from shorad but they doesn't mean there isn't an unknown / hidden system closer by.
Is it infared guided or visually guided
Both
both and probably GPS as well

Does it stop the helo from falling over in the wind?😂
??? Is this a joke? Apaches aren't built like whatever backwater country you come from
so if you have recon over an area 50km away and you have air superiority why not drop a JDAM-ER on it? why mess around with an apache & a tiny warhead. I mean if America can ever get around to producing JDAM-ER that is. Or a HIMARS. or a JSOW. this seems like a solution in search of a problem.

…not so sure as 1000 cheap drones with small and therefore cheaper explosive payloads can cause massive damage especially when operating as a swarm. Use off the shelf technologies and open source software.
Funny I've never once seen one used in combat?😂
There are probably a lot of things you haven't personally seen
@Gaijin pls
Oh god, this is gonna be in War Thunder soon and is the last thing we need!
First thing we need. U.S has a win rate of 10% to 20%.
How would this be any more OP than a Ka-50 Vikhr?
why does the video show a missile being fired on such a relatively simple target/range/topography? Isn't that a waste of its capabilities? Or is this stock footage?
Testing always starts simple and then gets more complex …..
Yuma Proving Ground is in the desert of Western Arizona. The US Army does a lot of missile and artillery testing at Yuma Proving Ground. It is a good place for it, because it is good weather and good conditions most of the year.
Interestingly enough, the Boeing builds the AH-64 in Mesa Arizona. The helicopter in the video is probably owned by Boeing for testing. It does not have any military markings. It looks like it has civilian tail number.
Why use an expensive helicopter flown by an expensive pilot? Drones will dominate the battlefield in future and many will be AI to seek out and destroy the enemy using missiles such as this.
Because we aren’t in the future yet.
Drones won’t make everything obsolete. Not for a long time anyway…
much more difficult to hack human pilots, for now.
Game changer for who exactly? Wall Street?
The Apache DESPERATELY needs a new missile.
It's a one trick pony. Upgrading the only thing it can do is an absolute must.
Unzurna
Well, that great and all, but this gunship does lack in air to air weaponry such as aim 92h or aim x9 could be fitted on the wing tips so it can still carry crv70mm and agm 114k.
The Apache is an American platform with American battle philosophy built into the design. The US Army doesn't concern itself with air to air combat capabilities. We expect to have total air superiority or air supremacy before we even engage the enemy.
@@JimCarner The US Navy/Marine Viper Attack Helicopter can use Aim-9 air to air missiles on the wing tips. But they took away the ability for the Apache to mount missiles on its wing tips after the Apache D variant. And put advanced missile/drone warning systems on the wing tips instead. Although air to air missiles can still be carried under the wing hardpoints, but it’s never done since that capability is not needed.
The Apache doesn’t need air to air missiles since air superiority would be guaranteed by the F-35 and F-22. And drones can be taken care of by the M-Shorad system or the Avenger
So the US chose to make the Apache more survivable against Manpads and short range SAMs instead.
The Apache can carry air to air missiles under the wing hard points. But it’s never done for obvious reasons. Air supremacy is already guaranteed for the US due to the F-35, F-22, F-16 Block 70, F-15
@@tylerclayton6081 I thought they put the capabiliy back on the E after initially removing it, I think it was South Korea specifically who requested it. They are not used by US, but it would be possible to mount them if the need were to arise.
Apache can mount wingtip starstreaks as well as engage aerial targets with it's 30mm chaingun
hungarian lynx41a carry two of this missiles. about a year ago.
?
I don’t doubt for one minute the Spike Missile Family is world class, after all Isreal does have one of the worlds most technically advanced defence industries, but it still mystifies me as to why the MOD choose to spend millions on JAGM and as I suspect are probably eyeing up Spike NLOS for the (Over the Horizon Attack Requirement) for the AH-64E, instead of our own, in service and combat proven Brimstone II Missile. This is supposedly because of budgetary and technical risk reasons.
This is despite, and as far as I am aware, Brimstone having some of the initial Intergration feasibility R&D already undertaken. Unless there is a more significant reason than the above, I feel that this likely to be another case of defence contract corruption between the MOD and LM and Washington!
Now prove it in Ukraine.
The UK isn even getting this missile. We bought a less effective US missile at an eye watering price!😂
