      Hey Scott, I have to disagree with the buying or not buying the cheap rotors. I used to buy the more expensive rotors that the stores carried. Usually Bosch, durajunk, or acdelco ( oe for my car). Every single set warped withing 6 months. I bought a complete Detroit Axle kit for $136. The rotors are perfect for being 2 years old and the pads still have 1/4 inch of meat on them.

    Remember as long as there are no leaks, the brake fluid in the master cylinder should go down. When the level is at low, your pads are probably ready for replacement.

    • @williammcdorman6426
      @williammcdorman6426 2 роки тому +14

      A lot of people don't know that, I've seen cars that all the paint was stripped off the fire wall because of filling a low reservoir and then chang their brakes later.

    • @adamfroese2915
      @adamfroese2915 2 роки тому +7

      Fair enough but you would have to check for leaks on all four calipers to prove there is no leaks anyway, you'd see the brake pads in the process so it kind of defeats the purpose

    • @ryans413
      @ryans413 2 роки тому +9

      Fair enough but most people don’t understand completely how the brake system works. They see the fluids low so they top it off. When comes time to do the brakes they don’t understand pushing the piston back pushes the fluid back and the master cylinder overflows. So it’s still best too take a flashlight just look between the tire and the rotor see the thickness that’s left just turn the tire outwards so you can look from the side more easy that way and the back tires just try to look best you can. I’ve seen my moms car her brakes were low but her master cylinder was full to the full line cause she toped it off.

    • @danielgoodman3578
      @danielgoodman3578 2 роки тому +4

      For when the fluid goes down faster because of a leak as opposed to pad wear, OBSERVE: if you drive a standard and the reservoir is shared for brake and clutch, check your clutch master and slave cylinder for leaks in addition to the brakes. Your brakes may be otherwise golden.

Though I had a company car back in '99 (Chevy Malibu) that had an issue with warped rotors which were replaced under warranty. I really hope I never have to replace the carbon ceramic rotors on my Z06 since they are $1,600+/each but then again they can handle way more heat so warping isn't an issue.

    • @raphaelrodrigues1645
      @raphaelrodrigues1645 2 роки тому +11

      It is. But over tightening the lug nuts, or even worse, the lug bolts you can get lots of problems. The studs can develop a crack that would make them snap overtime, they can snap immediately, you can destroy the threads of the wheel hub or the studs, you can leave the car owner stranded with a flat tire because they can't take the nut/bolt off to change the tire and so on. A good mechanic would torque the wheels with a torque wrench with the right torque spec.

  • @permabulk1454
    @permabulk1454 2 роки тому +1

    I used to believe this too, Buttttyt Pretty sure high carbon rotors (which all rotors are made of) can’t warp simply due to the amount of heat they’re designed to absorb and emit. What you’re feeling is uneven material from the pads (if unevenly bedded not bedded properly at all) unevenly displaced across the rotor, which then causes vibrating when stopping due to the amount of pad materials across the rotor surface. Scotty needs to go back and learn some things!

    Hard, Sudden Braking... causes, Heat Rise... Standing still, on, Over Heated Pad's, and, Rotor's, develops, warping, and, Fluid Stress. Don't wait, until, it's too late, to stop. Sudden, last second, hard braking, is, Unsafe Operation. Drive Smoothly, Slower, and, Gently, up, to, Stop Sign's, and Lights, and Traffic. Duh.

    New rotors are stored in boxes flat on the shelves, so they don't warp. Some cheaper ones are actually warped out of the box. Some of my customers would have us turn new rotors before they took them home, to true them.

      I've only used the Gold Series in 3 of my Veichles, and have been pleased. Warranty is 2 years, so I usually swap before it expires.
      Edit. Standard rotors are 2 years, and the golds are now a 3 year warranty.

    Warping disk rotors are (pretty much) a total hog wash myth...the vibration is (nearly) always because of an uneven layer of pad material on the disc. Caused by sitting with the footbrake depressed with hot discs after hard braking (not using the parking brake which only clamps much cooler rear discs).
    If u can see a pad shaped outline somewhere on the front disc, then that is defo the cause.
    And it can be fixed by repeated hard braking but without stopping to remove and lay down an even layer on the disc. Or get them skimmed.

    Dont tailgate, pay attention to the road, so you don't have to slam on the brakes. High speed and hard breaking creates alot of heat from friction of the pads and rotors, causing rotors to warp. Drive safe everybody

    My 1998 4Runner has a slight shimmy when I hit the brakes but nothing jerks to one side. I still think the rotors need replacement (200k miles, bought it used) but hope I have a little time left, as I run scrap for a “living” and need time to save up money.

    Its also dangerous to just use a jack to keep a 2000-3000lb vehicle in the air without either a jack stand or a tire underneath is in case it falls. Youre not wrong about the rotors, but you should know better than to trust the hydraulic in a jack that much, stuff happens, have a back up plan so you dont die or mess up your front end if the hydraulic in your jack goes out.
