Let's go for a tour around the remote island of Ghizo in the Solomon Islands in the Pacific Ocean and let's enjoy the Micronesian culture right in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Ghizo Island, home to the town of Gizo, the capital of the Western Province, Solomon Islands. Ghizo Island is named after an infamous local head-hunter. Ghizo Island is located west of New Georgia and Kolombangara in the Solomon Islands, Pacific Ocean.
Ghizo Island is relatively small when compared to the surrounding islands, the island is 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) long and 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) wide, with a summit elevation of 180 metres (590 ft) (Maringe Hill).
The Solomon Islands, a nation of hundreds of islands in the South Pacific, has many WWII-era sites. Guadalcanal, a province and one of the archipelago’s largest islands, honors fallen Allied soldiers at its U.S. War Memorial. Guadalcanal is also home to the nation’s capital, Honiara, whose bustling Central Market showcases the islands’ produce and traditional handicrafts.

Gizo is what passes as a big town in that part of the world. There recently on an adventure cruise. Harbourside markets being redeveloped. Road hasn't been fixed in past 3.5 years, or rubbish collected. The (non-catholic) church we saw with an outdoor service not looking as well maintained these days. The Gizo Dive Shop well worth a visit for the arts and crafts on sale. They took a small group of us for a dive on the wreck of the Toa Maru, sunk in WWII. It's only a short boat ride down the coast from town and is spectacular for me, a novice diver. Still many artefacts on board, including a light tank! Kennedy Island and associated story of JFK's wartime experience a big drawcard, not far from town. The Solomon Islands are remote and very pretty, and they have a fascinating history, starting with the Spanish explorer Mendana. Island people were very welcoming. Life quite precarious for many, particularly those on the outer islands.

10:15 I am almost positive that island in the background is Kolombangara. I've been studying the Solomon's as part of my WWII history research, so I am pretty much aware of Kolombangara. You were right Vic, Ghizo is beautiful, especially at 6:00 , that beach looks stunning!

@@VicStefanu I was a child when I lived there for 4 year I went native and lived with a Kiribati family when I was left there by my missionary parents my dad ran the burns Philip co op store and the cargo wharf
I was there just a couple of decades after WW2 and there was war infrastructure everywhere plannes ,in the reefs ,half sunken battle ships skeletons guns bullets it was the most exciting time of my childhood , I paddled out to Kennedy island and camped overnights fishing ect decades before the tourists came initiated into the Gilbert island tribe went shark hunting at night tended the coconut Tea syrup making and learnt the dialect I’m of New Zealand Maori decent so when I came back to New Zealand Kiribati and tereo ( Maori ) language is very similar for example in Kiribati Nakomai in Polynesian Maori hare Mai means come here .it’s been 50 years since I left my Gilbert island family in Ghizo when I retire in 5 years time I’m going back for a visit
@@pvChrists-Bond.Servant Hello and thank you for your comments. When I was there (2015) the Kiribati people were in a desperate state, very poor and marginalized... I spent a lot of time on the island of Logha (on the Gizo bay) with the monks (Franciscan I think)... what an incredible experience.. the best time of the day, for me at least, was around sunset time when all the local women would fry the fresh fish and sell it at the market by the sea..
@@VicStefanu Even back then the local Melanesian’s didn’t like the Immigrants from Kiribati , My Father employed a hundred or so of them to unload the cargo ships and reload the boats with copra the local indigenous Melanesians didn’t like the preferential treatment my Kiribati friends got .

Ghizo is very small and this here on the video is the only place to visit..
