- Operation Archery - after the retreat at Dunkirk, Churchill wants Britain and her allies to take the fight back to the enemy. He orders daring and hard hitting Commando raids along the German occupied coastline of Europe. British and Free Norwegian Commandos must hit the town of Måløy, destroy strategic targets there, and get out again before the German military can mobilise against them.

I thought the same thing. They thought “Look the Brits are retreating, let’s pounce!” And only too late did they realize a destroyer was pointing every gun it had at them. That had to have been brutal to witness

Mad Jack was an absolute legend, fighting only with a broadsword, a longbow and bagpipes against Germans with machine guns, planes and tanks. He claimed the last official longbow kill in the world
And grenades, apparently.
He used more modern weapons, but yes, one of his classic lines is "Any officer who goes into the field without his sword is improperly dressed." Of course, his greatest triumph has to be the night that he and an aide captured 42 Germans using only his sword.

It's easy for an English-speaker to mispronounce the "øy", yet the same sound's on island names all over Britain: Bardsey, Anglesey, Wallasey, Islay, etc, etc.

Also playing a single player campaign mission of this in the style of Post Scriptum, where you have to destroy the fish oil warehouses with Mad Jack by your side, while ships and planes moving around you and everything blowing up!
The entire Norweigan theater in World War II deserves more attention. Some of the missions the Norweigan and British commandos undertook makes Call of Duty look tame.
@@Phantom-qr1ug At least there's a Narvik movie releasing this year, but I have a feeling they're going to take some big historical liberties (fictional characters, love story etc). Should have been a miniseries! So many events during the Norwegian campaign that deserves a show or movie.

How thrilling it must have been for that Norwegian officer to set foot on his home soil and defend it again, for however brief a time. Is there any monument to him?

Not only did he get several memorials, an entire Company was named after him, Company Linge which was the biggest Norwegian Company during WW2.
The Ulvesund hotel burned down and was never rebuilt, and the plot was made into a park, named the Linge Park.
So proud to say my father R A Smith was on this raid with 3 Commando.

Friendly fire... isn't. And it is often more accurate than enemy fire.
Only if you invite the yanks to play.
Frankly, it's probably even MORE common than videos such as this show. Ops Room does a good job of being scrupulously accurate, but anecdotally it's not uncommon for true blue-on-blue casualties to be reported as enemy fire in order to minimize morale damage. In the chaos of war, with communication limited, it happens a LOT.

Those sailors who took on a British destroyer with one little 20mm canon were brave men. They knew it was a suicide mission but went anyways.

Interesting fact, the name commando comes from the boer Kommando's in the boer war from 1899-1902, where Churchill was stationed for a while. He was so impressed by their skill on horseback, marksmanship and fast raids against the British he brought the concept to Britain.

Churchill was also the first man to ride the Severn Bore on a Surf board ! (a tidal wave that runs the length of England`s longest river, the river Severn)
Brit Commandos are the real deal, all props from your brothers in the States.
That must really suck to be a commando and train months for this very moment, just to be killed in an inadvertent friendly fire incident like getting a phosphorus bomb dropped on you. The reality of war.

The British commando raids is easily one of the most exciting and fascinating source of stories to come out of World war 2, along with the various naval engagements. Loving this! Top quality work. Hope you have the raid on St. Nazaire or on the Norwegian heavy water plants in the pipeline :D

This channel is literally the meaning of Quality over Quantity
Haha those 2 destroyers look like they were having a blast in that fjord. God I love these videos. By far my favorite format of war docs. I just love the format and style. It shows you the visual movements, detailed larger scale movements, missing some context but short of that there's few other information sources I've found that give such an accurate overview. Really the only thing I would like added is maybe some initial rundown (or an info bar off to side) of combatants and units involved. Get to see some division emblems or ship seals/crests or whatever. With pictures of captains or leaders etc.
I never thought about massive naval guns being fired on infantry before, damn.
I heard of -1 of US battleship- USS Wisconsin that were fired upon by North Korean during Korean War. They tried to sink the ship by using their -howitzers- 6 inch gun batteries, so naturally the BB swung her 406mm guns towards them and fired. The US troops later said that they only found massive craters.
Vaguely remember a story of allied troops in Normandy calling in battleship fire on advancing German tanks. Apparently the blasts were so strong the tanks got tossed about, landing on their sides. I think the last case of battleships providing fire support was the first gulf war

I'm speechless at the bravery and sacrifice of these men.
As an amateur military analyst and (hopefully) a soon to be infantry officer, my favorite content on armed conflict has never been the grand battles involving hundreads of thousands of men, but the small engagements fought by at most a few companies of men, in which the tactics, leadership and innitiative of the men on the ground decide the battle.
This is by far my favorite content on this channel and frankly, probably on the whole of UA-cam, and the level of detail and production quality are astonishing.

Man, could you imagine being on leave from Operation Barbarossa thinking it'll be a chill couple weeks in Norway, then the Royal Navy shows up and wipes out your entire platoon. Rest in peace German lads.

@ 11:15 "fire and movement" or as in my experience "fire and maneuver" is MADLY EXHAUSTING!! I'll attempt to communicate this to the uninitiated the very basic small unit tactic of advancing thru the objective or retreating while "Attempting" to coordinate: odd-even rushes where every other man (odd for this example) lays suppressing fire from available cover while the (even) other men rush forward less than 3 seconds then hit the deck and roll to available cover and then lay suppressing fire for the (odd) men to then rush forward, repeat until objective is seized. Whew! Words can not express the experience.
There's also a somewhat more coordinated movement where selected individuals are positioned as a "Base of Fire". That group may consist of Automatic Riflemen w/ M249 SAW, M60 or M240B, or perhaps the same weapons as the "Maneuver Element" with extra ammunition. That Base of Fire lays constant suppressive fire while the Manouver Element advance towards the objective. When the Maneuver Element is close enough to the objective a signal is used to alert the Base of Fire to either cease fire or shift that fire away from friendlies, or continue to engage targets of opportunity while the objective is secured.
Whew. I left a TON of information out, but I just wanted to try and convey that "fire and movement" is insanely intense.
Mad Jack Churchill was not a man to be trifled with especially when encumbered with bagpipes and ceremonial broadsword.

@@PresidentEvilX yeah they do we lost a lot of guys in norway fighting for their country after they surrendered quickly, they should have went full on guerilla, norway has the terrain to fight a war like that, instead their leadership leaves the country and their army drop their arms.
I believe that our national Christmas tree was always a gift from Norway. When I was a little boy 60 years ago, I recall my mam telling me that it was a gift from Norway to thank " our boys" as she called them, for all the help they gave Norway.

Someone said "Mad Jack" so I showed up to story time.
Living in Norway and not far away, I had heard of the raid, but was never sure of the exact location. I was surprised to see it all happen where I have sailed and visited many times. There's a large road bridge across the sound now linking Maloy to the mainland, thearea where the merchant ships were, I actually stopped there for fuel. The island with the gun emplacements now has a mole linking it to Maloy.
Love how the Brits always break out the bagpipes in the middle of a fire fight!!

Love the transition to the satellite map, and good job on the Norwegian pronunciation. Foreigners usually get our three different letters (Æ, Ø and Å) wrong, but you nailed it!
Edit: one minor nitpick is that Linge is pronounced Ling-eh and not Ling-ee. We pronounce the letter E differently than in English.
Really enjoyed this episode of The Operations Room. Great production quality and lots of interesting parts to the story. Mad Jack Churchill has got to be one of the greatest soldiers to have ever lived!
TOR, your work is terrific and informative. These 15 minute snippets of animation and chronology of action are better than many documentaries. Bravo.
These just get better and better. Keep them coming.
The one thing people may not realise about these amazing recreations, or at least one thing I'd like to highlight, is that when simple terms such as, but are not limited to, "they cleared the area" are used, that almost means that they just shot dead x number of enemy soldiers, but the way it is portrayed here is that they just took over the place and that was that.
Not that it changes much, but it is important to note the brutality of what is being depicted in such beautiful art form.
Always loved the top-down situational analysis view of the battlefield.

I live in Iceland, Fish oil is consumed as a valuable source of vitamin D, which sunlight deprived submarine crews would have needed. The video says vitamin A, which is not taken as a dietary supplement in Europe.

This brings back memories for me, as when I first joined the Corp, we were told this tale by one of our weapons instructors, who's father was actually part of this raid and one of the reasons he wanted to join up.
After we came out of this tale of our predecessors actions, we walked back to our pits realising that stories like this, was just one of the reasons that we had joined the finest corp in world.

@@petersone6172 It was and we tried our best to live up to what they started all those years ago, but my best days are behind me now as I have been out since 1979. The only real regret I have is that I'm just far to old to go and play with the lads anymore, as it wasn't a job, it was just what we did and never really wanted to do anything else. (I really, really miss those days)

I'm used to destroyers being toothless cannon fodder in naval engagements. In a close sea support/commando ferry role they dominate the battlefield!
Toothless ;) Tell that to the Japanese cruiser the USS Johnston sunk (DD-557). It was part of a destroyer force (escorting light carriers) that drove off an attack by the largest battleship in the world, Yamato, and her supporting ships. This saved the troop transport ships and supply ships of the Americans in the battle of Leyte Gulf.
The Japanese baited the Americans into drawing off their battleships and carriers to sink some sacrificial carriers. Two Groups pounced on the landing site, but the Southern one was driven off before it could arrive at its target. The Northern one (Yamato force) greeted the light carriers with shell splashes, The Captain of the Johnston didn't wait for orders and charged the task force. Their torpedo salvo resulted in a hit that blew the bow off of the lead cruiser. Since it charged, the enemy assumed it was a cruiser and the fleet used armor piercing shells instead of high explosives, so their rounds just went through the Johnston which allowed it to stay in the fight almost until the end.
Their bravery and courage convinced the enemy they were fighting cruisers and fleet carriers instead of destroyers and light carriers, so they eventually withdrew. Seeing the Johnston charge, the US carrier commander ordered the other destroyers to attack with torpedo's. The Johnston battered and moving slow, turned around to provide gun support for the torpedo attack of the rest of the squadron.
Later it engaged 11 destroyers and turned them off of a torpedo attack on the light carriers, forcing them to fire too soon and miss. (The enemy destroyers were well aware a single destroyer shell would detonate their volatile torpedo's on deck. A squadron of Destroyers along with concentrated fire from the big ships was too much for the Johnston to survive and as it sunk, rumors of the Japanese sailors saluting as they sailed by were reported.
Captain Evan's was wounded in the early fighting and moved to the rear of his destroyer when his bridge was destroyed and gave orders to the engine room down below. He had been wounded and refused to give up command. Wonderful stuff. This raid reminds me of the battles on South Georgia during the Falklands War. In the Battle of Grytviken 22 marines with only small arms sunk an enemy corvette and shot down a helicopter before eventually surrendering to a much larger force.
The island was recaptured 3 weeks later in Operation Paraquet by special forces in appalling conditions without a single casualty. Could we have a video covering either (or both) of these battles please?

The research on this raid makes the discovery channel stuff look amateur. I've been aware of this battle for years as my father was a Commando (not on this raid though, served with Churchill in Salerno) but the presentation of this production gives so much additional information.. Great work

Thank you for covering this battle. Actions like these are obscured by the passage of time and by the ease of reporting the larger, most consequential battles. This one, however, strikes me as a perfect reminder of the pluck, audacity and cunning of the Brits in WWII.
