I have been searching for my Irish family for 30 years, not having much luck, have DNA results that lead nowhere, only a few very, very distant cousins.
Our family has never known what became of our 3X great grandmother, who was a slave, owned by our 3X great grandfather in British Guiana in the 1820s up until 1834 when he died. Their child, was raised by him, and then following his death, educated by the church there. She was given an academic and musical education. We have all of that (except our 2X great grandmother's photo), and how she went to England, and the British Surgeon she married...and all the facts thereafter (including photos), but our 3X great grandmother is lost to history. All we have is her name, spelled phonetically in a document, because she was named after the ship that transported her from Africa. In his Will, he freed her, but after that...nothing. I think she had other children who found their way to the US, because when I had my DNA done by Ancestry, a few showed up on the east coast of the US. It's just haunting that we can't find out what happened to her, because it would be like we were bringing her home to family.
I am in the process of finding out more about my grandmother’s father. I never heard anything about him. He was dead when I was born. We have traced my grandfathers family back to the 1600’s. I am going further back with his family too. Family Geneology is so fascinating to me.
I no nothing of my Grandfather's family on my dad's side. I'm hoping to know who I'm Related to but I've heard a mystery about my Grandmother's family on my dad's side that were Related to Reba McEntire cause she was from Oklahoma and my Grandmother was also from Oklahoma so I don't know

Makes me sad when people criticizes immigrants who are poor and are looking for a new beginning in the USA, when their ancestors had the same situation.
Immigration only makes sense when a country needs people and needs specific skills, even if that is just manual labour. Back-in-the-day as America was growing, it needed almost unfettered immigration. But that is NOT the case anymore, and uncontrolled influxes of hundreds of thousands of people pery year is now only a burden to the State! Just because people CAN get a better life in the US compared to their home country does NOT mean that they should be allowed to simply move to any country they want to! There are too many simpleton do-gooders who NEVER think about the sociological and economic impact of unregulated immigration!
A legal immigrant can easily make it in this country. At this historical time, the southern border is open with plenty of nefarious push behind it. Unregistered immigrants are a big issue. This administration has completely violated our rights and ignored our constitution. This would not be happening if it were not financially profitable. Someone is making a mint off drug smuggling and human trafficking in many forms.
No one complains about immigrants coming to the USA. We complain about illegal immigrants that jump the border. In fact, legal immigrants complain about illegal immigrants.

Well, those Sullivan boys were my relatives, my family lineage are the Sullivan's and Murphy's, from County Kerry, Ireland. Now this warms my heart. My G-Grandparents both came to the USA from County Kerry, and they Met in Chicago, both from Kerry but didn't know each other there. My mother's Grandparents and they gave me the best Grandmother, Mary Helen Murphy - Lynch, the most loving woman I've ever known. I appreciate the Irish History and family info.
You and I may have relatives, or at least neighbors, in common -- my maternal great-grandparents also immigrated from Co. Kerry in the late 1800s, met and married in Chicago (South Side) where I still have a lot of family members (actually, one great-aunt married a Lynch!). A pretty common story, it seems!
This is one of the things that confused me about Irish immigration. If everyone there was so poor, then how did they even afford to immigrate? It wasn't until I visited Ireland with my parents that I learned about this "assisted immigration," that landowners literally paid to have their tenants immigrate to North America, rather than keeping them on the poor roles in Ireland. I also learned about "coffin ships" and that people often entered into indentured servitude to get their passage to North America paid.

I was so excited to hear he had a Falvey as an ancestor. Not related to me, but because it's not a common name (well relatively speaking...moderately common in Kerry) it was an amazing Wow moment!
I had a great boss whose last name is Falvey. He is genuinely kind but a precise boss. He would tell you what he needed and trusted you would get that done. I admired that.
A couple of things that their shared laugh about assisted immigrants failed to mention: 1. Ireland was under British rule at the time - the ones doing the kicking out were Brits 2. This is about 30 years after the starvation of the Irish by the Brits who, unlike the Choctaw and Turks, provided next to no relief to the Irish, and in fact kept talking food from the country despite the potato blight. 3. If Irish records are notoriously difficult to find, it's down to the Brits, who made Catholicism illegal (hence Church records were hidden), and to a fire in the Four Courts that destroyed many of them (currently being painfully reconstructed where possible).
It was during the great famine and people were starving to death. Some landlords assisted the Irish to travel to America but many died on board the famine ships. For those who survived many died in America because the Irish were denied jobs or places to live. No Irish need to apply was the slogan. Please don't forget those who perish and romancised that famine ship. Rather than saying people starved to death the death certificates would imply other causes
The main cause was "consumption" (TB). And the Irish were fleeing the potato famine, and when they could save up enough money for passage (in steerage but nonetheless), they would leave for America. The ships manifests can be found online. Note that they were not called Famine Ships, but yes there were mNy who escaped the famine abord ships. But there were also many other nationalities than Irish. All came for different reasons. "Send us your hungry and your poor," called Lady Liberty...!
I have recently spoke to a Hallisey, he thinks that the family was back around Sneem in the 1600s and started moving east, some stayed in Kenmare and others went over into Cork. My 2 x great grandmother was a Mary Hallisey from west Cork.
Some of my family (Curran, Scannell, Sullivan, etc.) also came from County Kerry, on the Dingle Peninsula. Typical joke from that time: Q: You know the only good thing to come out of Kerry? A: The road to Cork. LOL.

If im ever fortunate enough to meet Mr. Lane in real life ill buy him a beer to cheers the old country and how fortunate we are to not be perpetually starving to death and able to have beer.
It may not be strictly true that an X mark means that he wasn't educated. At that time, in that part of Ireland, the Irish language was the mother tongue of most people. He could have been educated but English was a second language and officialdom at the time only operated in English. He may have been able to read and write in Irish. The Irish had a very early, free education system.
@@karlabritfeld7104 what is so funny? Irish is still spoken in West Kerry as a first language in households there. Irish national schools started as early as 1830s, a lot earlier than other countries. Old Irish was first written in the Roman alphabet before the beginning of the 7th century which makes Irish the oldest written vernacular language north of the Alps. The officials in registration offices would not take the trouble to spell a name in Irish and would ask them to make a mark. I am just making the point that in this case, a mark does not always mean illiteracy.
"Assisted immigrants"... man, that's a rough way to travel. I'm glad my great-great-grandfather and his brother came to America of their own choice (actually, they were tricked into coming by their fiancées).

( Yes, the Brady family) as to whether Lindsey Anderson Brady’s ancestors were Irish or Scottish.. is still a mystery in our family. We have had family members go to both Countries to discover and it seems we’re no closer.
We all are from immigrants coming to American for a better way of life. These stories are so interesting and educational. We learn of their hardships, their achievements along with their losses and accomplishments. I love it especially when people find lost loved ones they knew nothing about.😊😊❤❤

What must be understood about 'assisted passage' is that the 'Landlords' would have had to contribute much more money to government 'Relief' measures if their miserable Tenants stayed. So, by paying a little money for their fares they were saving themselves a bundle. No misplaced idea of Charity there! That was the lot of the Irish peasant, living in their own country, usually on their Ancestral Lands that were taken from them by the Invaders (think Russia invading Ukraine right now) who needed cheap labor from people who knew how to work the land. The 'Tenants' were made to pay dearly through 'Rent' for that privilege. The lot of the Irish peasant was little better than African American Slaves in the Southern States of America!
And on top of paying rent to foreign landlords for their own land many we're forced to pay tithes (10% of gross income) to the foreign church as well...not their own. during the penal code days.. plus, they were not allowed to receive any education or speak their own language
I’m very glad my Irish ancestors were “assisted” to immigrate. If they had not they would never have made a success of farming and then sending children to school to the point of spreading prosperously from Michigan to Alaska, Oregon, and California!
I would have loved it if at the end of this episode (when their famous relatives are revealed), Dr. Gates showed him a picture of Alec Baldwin and told him that he’s his brother.
Assisting is a fancy word for leave and possibly die on the way or stay and die for sure. Since there was plenty of food in Ireland for the Protestants or the Catholics willing to convert, I think "Famine" Glosses over what was really going on.
Surely a fresh start and opportunities in America would be better than a life of abject poverty back in Ireland, so many of the younger immigrants from Ireland probably jumped at the chance of having an assisted passage to America.
We in the US are the envy of the world because hard working people from all over the world still come here to raise their children. This is our greatest treasure. They're not coming to take your jobs. They're coming to support you in your old age.
I'm sure he didn't mean it that way. But to tell an African American "this is what this country is based on (...) people (...) coming here to follow a dream, to escape something, to find something. (...) Is the basis of who we are", is a little insensitive. Because that certainly does not apply to the ancestors of most African-Americans who were involuntarily deported to the USA.

When my 2x great grandparents came on a similar ship had 4 kids when they left and none when they arrived dur to illnesses on the ship, plus they were starving when they left Ireland. They had 4 more children while in Canada and a further 4 generations so far.

I love seeing these clips. I've done some basic genealogical research into my family. The Irish piece has been a mystery. My g-g-grandmother, Mary McTaggart from somewhere in Donegal, married a man from York England. We don't know how they met, but I might guess on the boat. Their first child looks NOTHING like the other children... Ahem. This is the first I'm hearing of "assisted immigrants". So, basically, they were treated like crap by their home country, forced to come here to be treated the same way.

Finding Irish records can certainly be challenging owing to the fire at the Public Record Office in Dublin during the Civil War but many records remain. For this reason, we look primarily to church records for information on Irish ancestors before this time. Looking with a name and approximate date is a great starting place. We'd recommend using our Card Catalog to narrow down our collections by location as well as the closest decade. We recommend looking at the Irish dog license records and Griffiths valuation records to make up for the lack of census records. I love these videos and I love what I've seen of Nathan Lane and of Dr. Gates. I understand that these videos cannot convey the full context of the whole show. But when I watched a white man tell a black man that our ancestors came here to fulfill a dream, I cringed.
Dr Gates shows us week after week that our survival and success today is often based on the huge sacrifices of those who came before us regardless of color. I acknowledge that black people didn’t come to America by choice and enslavement is horrific. For many poor Irish, staying in Ireland was horrific and most likely a death sentence. The “dream” of these starving, white, people was to escape severe depravation in order to survive and hopefully thrive. A Jewish person might say that horrific events are quite colorblind.
The overwelming majority of people who went to North America, did so under the most dire circumstances. That's the thing that equalizes us. Because no matter where you are now, somewhere back in history our families were all at the same starting line.
I'd like information about my Nigerian (2.3%) and North African (1.8%) ancestors. My family was from the deep South and several had plantations. It make me also question if my Caucasian ancestors really are my ancestors. I doubt I'll ever be able to figure it out.
@@Furienna I'm sure you're correct. I believe it's likely I have slave ancestors as well as white plantation ancestors. I just don't know where it started; which of my grandmothers really isn't my grandmother. When I told my 3d cousin, who lives in Alabama, his response was priceless "you didn't get it from this side of the family!" As if it were some kind of disease. I suspect a lot of white people in the deep south are descended from slaves. Unfortunately, DNA dissipates with each generation unless another person with similar DNA is introduced into the family. While I have 4.1% African DNA, my children have so much less that it wasn't listed when they had their DNA tested. I'd love to find some of my black relatives...especially if they could lead me back to my original black ancestor.
@@marionabbott7173 Denying and hiding your black heritage if you could was so important in the South, that it makes sense that it still hasn't gone away entirely. So I'm really not surprised that your cousin reacted like he did, but I would think that many white people in Alabama have a bit of African DNA without knowing it.
Ancestry helped me solve a mystery in my family tree…. When I went far enough back I saw women married to themselves. Odd. As I dug I realized that they were women married to Joseph Smith, the Mormon Prophet while they were still married to their first husbands. Ancestry, a company owned by Mormons, was attempting to hide the information on their site while still acknowledging the marriages. I lost all respect for the company as stopped using their platform.

It may seem strange but none of this matters to me….family can be more than blood or dna…..it is love and caring that has made me who I am. I guess if I was interested in my features this would matter to me. I
Finding that wedding info was the beginning of a life that created Nathan... I don't think he got it. That document was very special. Of all the docs that could have survived.
They never had a dream....they were forced to leave their homes, the 1870s, which was the height of the land evictions where tenants farmers were forced out on to the side of the road by the landowners (British). Land in Co Kerry at that time was split mainly between 4 families each holdind over 30.000 acres all prodestant and 3 with titles with their main home in England . So they didn't starve to death, or the work house was full they were PUT on ships to America

my Dad's Dad knew almost nothing about his side except they were Swedish. He didnt even know his grandparent's names

Well, those Sullivan boys were my relatives, my family lineage are the Sullivan's and Murphy's, from County Kerry, Ireland.
Now this warms my heart.
My G-Grandparents both came to the USA from County Kerry, and they Met in Chicago, both from Kerry but didn't know each other there. My mother's Grandparents and they gave me the best Grandmother, Mary Helen Murphy - Lynch, the most loving woman I've ever known.

You and I may have relatives, or at least neighbors, in common -- my maternal great-grandparents also immigrated from Co. Kerry in the late 1800s, met and married in Chicago (South Side) where I still have a lot of family members (actually, one great-aunt married a Lynch!). A pretty common story, it seems!
This is one of the things that confused me about Irish immigration. If everyone there was so poor, then how did they even afford to immigrate? It wasn't until I visited Ireland with my parents that I learned about this "assisted immigration," that landowners literally paid to have their tenants immigrate to North America, rather than keeping them on the poor roles in Ireland. I also learned about "coffin ships" and that people often entered into indentured servitude to get their passage to North America paid.
They borrowed money for the passage.
the local landlords paid to get them off their property so they wouldn't have to look after them during the famine years.

A couple of things that their shared laugh about assisted immigrants failed to mention:
1. Ireland was under British rule at the time - the ones doing the kicking out were Brits
2. This is about 30 years after the starvation of the Irish by the Brits who, unlike the Choctaw and Turks, provided next to no relief to the Irish, and in fact kept talking food from the country despite the potato blight.
3. If Irish records are notoriously difficult to find, it's down to the Brits, who made Catholicism illegal (hence Church records were hidden), and to a fire in the Four Courts that destroyed many of them (currently being painfully reconstructed where possible).
It was during the great famine and people were starving to death. Some landlords assisted the Irish to travel to America but many died on board the famine ships. For those who survived many died in America because the Irish were denied jobs or places to live. No Irish need to apply was the slogan. Please don't forget those who perish and romancised that famine ship. Rather than saying people starved to death the death certificates would imply other causes
It was people very like todays GOP who were behind that treatment of the Irish Catholics, they too feared being "replaced"!
The main cause was "consumption" (TB). And the Irish were fleeing the potato famine, and when they could save up enough money for passage (in steerage but nonetheless), they would leave for America. The ships manifests can be found online. Note that they were not called Famine Ships, but yes there were mNy who escaped the famine abord ships. But there were also many other nationalities than Irish. All came for different reasons. "Send us your hungry and your poor," called Lady Liberty...!
They were called coffin ships for a reason
Emigration by assisted passage or the signing a name X was very common in both Ireland and Britain.

I have recently spoke to a Hallisey, he thinks that the family was back around Sneem in the 1600s and started moving east, some stayed in Kenmare and others went over into Cork. My 2 x great grandmother was a Mary Hallisey from west Cork.
Some of my family (Curran, Scannell, Sullivan, etc.) also came from County Kerry, on the Dingle Peninsula. Typical joke from that time: Q: You know the only good thing to come out of Kerry? A: The road to Cork. LOL.

If im ever fortunate enough to meet Mr. Lane in real life ill buy him a beer to cheers the old country and how fortunate we are to not be perpetually starving to death and able to have beer.
It may not be strictly true that an X mark means that he wasn't educated. At that time, in that part of Ireland, the Irish language was the mother tongue of most people. He could have been educated but English was a second language and officialdom at the time only operated in English. He may have been able to read and write in Irish. The Irish had a very early, free education system.
@@karlabritfeld7104 what is so funny? Irish is still spoken in West Kerry as a first language in households there. Irish national schools started as early as 1830s, a lot earlier than other countries. Old Irish was first written in the Roman alphabet before the beginning of the 7th century which makes Irish the oldest written vernacular language north of the Alps. The officials in registration offices would not take the trouble to spell a name in Irish and would ask them to make a mark. I am just making the point that in this case, a mark does not always mean illiteracy.

I know I am not a celebrity to be a part of your program, but the question of my maternal grandfather’s side.. ( Yes, the Brady family) as to whether Lindsey Anderson Brady’s ancestors were Irish or Scottish.. is still a mystery in our family. We have had family members go to both Countries to discover and it seems we’re no closer.
We all are from immigrants coming to American for a better way of life. These stories are so interesting and educational. We learn of their hardships, their achievements along with their losses and accomplishments. I love it especially when people find lost loved ones they knew nothing about.😊😊❤❤

What must be understood about 'assisted passage' is that the 'Landlords' would have had to contribute much more money to government 'Relief' measures if their miserable Tenants stayed. So, by paying a little money for their fares they were saving themselves a bundle. No misplaced idea of Charity there! That was the lot of the Irish peasant, living in their own country, usually on their Ancestral Lands that were taken from them by the Invaders (think Russia invading Ukraine right now) who needed cheap labor from people who knew how to work the land. The 'Tenants' were made to pay dearly through 'Rent' for that privilege. The lot of the Irish peasant was little better than African American Slaves in the Southern States of America!
And on top of paying rent to foreign landlords for their own land many we're forced to pay tithes (10% of gross income) to the foreign church as well...not their own. during the penal code days.. plus, they were not allowed to receive any education or speak their own language
I’m very glad my Irish ancestors were “assisted” to immigrate. If they had not they would never have made a success of farming and then sending children to school to the point of spreading prosperously from Michigan to Alaska, Oregon, and California!

Assisting is a fancy word for leave and possibly die on the way or stay and die for sure. Since there was plenty of food in Ireland for the Protestants or the Catholics willing to convert, I think "Famine" Glosses over what was really going on.

Surely a fresh start and opportunities in America would be better than a life of abject poverty back in Ireland, so many of the younger immigrants from Ireland probably jumped at the chance of having an assisted passage to America.
We in the US are the envy of the world because hard working people from all over the world still come here to raise their children. This is our greatest treasure. They're not coming to take your jobs. They're coming to support you in your old age.
I'm sure he didn't mean it that way. But to tell an African American "this is what this country is based on (...) people (...) coming here to follow a dream, to escape something, to find something. (...) Is the basis of who we are", is a little insensitive. Because that certainly does not apply to the ancestors of most African-Americans who were involuntarily deported to the USA.

When my 2x great grandparents came on a similar ship had 4 kids when they left and none when they arrived dur to illnesses on the ship, plus they were starving when they left Ireland. They had 4 more children while in Canada and a further 4 generations so far.

I had always assumed that Nathan Lane & Cathy Lane from the Patty Duke show were identical cousins.
No but Patty's and Cathy were, had they known I'm sure they would have embraced Nathan too!

I love seeing these clips. I've done some basic genealogical research into my family. The Irish piece has been a mystery. My g-g-grandmother, Mary McTaggart from somewhere in Donegal, married a man from York England. We don't know how they met, but I might guess on the boat. Their first child looks NOTHING like the other children... Ahem. This is the first I'm hearing of "assisted immigrants". So, basically, they were treated like crap by their home country, forced to come here to be treated the same way.

Finding Irish records can certainly be challenging owing to the fire at the Public Record Office in Dublin during the Civil War but many records remain. For this reason, we look primarily to church records for information on Irish ancestors before this time. Looking with a name and approximate date is a great starting place. We'd recommend using our Card Catalog to narrow down our collections by location as well as the closest decade. We recommend looking at the Irish dog license records and Griffiths valuation records to make up for the lack of census records. You might also find irishgenealogy.ie useful for finding some civil records. I love these videos and I love what I've seen of Nathan Lane and of Dr. Gates. I understand that these videos cannot convey the full context of the whole show. But when I watched a white man tell a black man that our ancestors came here to fulfill a dream, I cringed.
Dr Gates shows us week after week that our survival and success today is often based on the huge sacrifices of those who came before us regardless of color. I acknowledge that black people didn’t come to America by choice and enslavement is horrific. For many poor Irish, staying in Ireland was horrific and most likely a death sentence. The “dream” of these starving, white, people was to escape severe depravation in order to survive and hopefully thrive. A Jewish person might say that horrific events are quite colorblind.

The overwelming majority of people who went to North America, did so under the most dire circumstances. That's the thing that equalizes us. Because no matter where you are now, somewhere back in history our families were all at the same starting line.

my greaytgrandmother was named honora, is it just an irish name because i was told it was english. i am shocked.
I'd like information about my Nigerian (2.3%) and North African (1.8%) ancestors. My family was from the deep South and several had plantations. It make me also question if my Caucasian ancestors really are my ancestors. I doubt I'll ever be able to figure it out.
You seem to have ancestors, who managed to pass as white.
@@Furienna I'm sure you're correct. I believe it's likely I have slave ancestors as well as white plantation ancestors. I just don't know where it started; which of my grandmothers really isn't my grandmother. When I told my 3d cousin, who lives in Alabama, his response was priceless "you didn't get it from this side of the family!" As if it were some kind of disease. I suspect a lot of white people in the deep south are descended from slaves. Unfortunately, DNA dissipates with each generation unless another person with similar DNA is introduced into the family. While I have 4.1% African DNA, my children have so much less that it wasn't listed when they had their DNA tested. I'd love to find some of my black relatives...especially if they could lead me back to my original black ancestor.

So I'm really not surprised that your cousin reacted like he did, but I would think that many white people in Alabama have a bit of African DNA without knowing it.

Ancestry helped me solve a mystery in my family tree…. When I went far enough back I saw women married to themselves. Odd. As I dug I realized that they were women married to Joseph Smith, the Mormon Prophet while they were still married to their first husbands. Ancestry, a company owned by Mormons, was attempting to hide the information on their site while still acknowledging the marriages. I lost all respect for the company as stopped using their platform.

The poor Irish endure years of racism and treated worse than dogs
They had to learn to overcome these hardships in America
They never had a dream....they were forced to leave their homes, the 1870s, which was the height of the land evictions where tenants farmers were forced out on to the side of the road by the landowners (British). Land in Co Kerry at that time was split mainly between 4 families each holdind over 30.000 acres all prodestant and 3 with titles with their main home in England . So they didn't starve to death, or the work house was full they were PUT on ships to America
