His Netflix special is actually misinformation for the first 5 minutes he claims Latino(just the Spanish way of saying Latin) started with the Aztecs and Mayans... That is completely false and misleading especially to young minds. Latin culture started with the Roman empire was killed by the Germans and recreated by them.
@Merican Modi there were various Germanic tribes and clans that sacked rome multiple times till its collapse. The current Germans of the nation of Germany are obviously more diverse today... Just like the nation of Spain didn't get established until until December 6 1978.
With years I learned to love my native roots half of my ancestors were from Spain that migrated to Peru in the 1800s my other half is native Indias from the mountains of Ancash Peru … my daughter was born here in USA and she is sooo proud to be a mixture of culture…
3:35 “Noble indian” ….guys, lucky you that this was conquered by Spain and not by England. How many Indians were respected, not isolated and maintained his titles in the english society? How many MIXED MARRIAGE were promoted in US in XX century? There is a black legend against Spain that sooner or later will be cleared, and this is a hint. Natives were part of the spanish society. Jeronimo, the famous indian cherokee, was catholic and spoke spanish. Wonder why you didn’t know that
@@WNT2BLV obviously, you did not read enough. The current international Laws are based on the Law which was created by the Spanish Empire for America, because is a legal model of respect of different cultures. That’s why THEY ARE STILL THERE TODAY. And that’s why Spain created grammar and dictionary for local indigenous languages BEFORE the British even had their own dictionary in ENGLISH. The British killed everyone in Australia, that’s why they are white today there. Regarding USA, British arrive to America 100 years LATER than Spain, and they were kicked out 100 before than the Spanish, precisely because the lack of freedom British Colony had. The Hispanic America claimed their independence because France invaded European Spain, and they did not want to be French. British colonies flourished AFTER the independence from UK (due to the always abusive Metropoli-colony relationship), while Hispanic America flourished BEFORE the independence (Spain owned the global market, and the global coin was the Spanish Dollar, making Mexico the richest city in the world because it was the center of the first global shipping line)
After watching his extremely progressive film “Latin History for Morons” he would despise his Spanish 7th grandfather but ONLY The Spanish recognized our indigenous community as NOBLE. Generalizing ALL Europeans and ALL indigenous during the conquest of the Americas is what splits our Hispanic-American community and he participated in that process dramatically in his film. It was disheartening to watch he never mentioned The first universities of The New World or Western Hemisphere were first chartered in 1551 beginning with Perú, México, República Dominicana, Colombia etc BEFORE the British colonial college in the North as Harvard or the fact that Queen Isabella put Colombus in jail for continuously abusing the Taínos, on her death bed, she forbade her family to treat the Taíno as slaves. Hispanic-Americans are tired of being used as Proxies to defend a genocide by comparing or GENERALIZING Spain with the rest of European settlers.
You're disregarding the Revolutionary colonial period when the Spaniards strictly taxed and imposed unfair (e.g. public hangings) and corrupt rule on everyday Mestizos (who were largely discriminated for not being born in Spain). Those taxes, those goods and natural resources, that farm & slave labor went back to replenish and build what is a modern Spain. One cannot dismiss the last 400 years of continuous decimating indigenous populations and the societal pushback they face or the large disparity between the haves and the have nots. While I agree being referred to as a noble Indian is endearing, it's also not enough to forget how much our colonizers robbed us. Moreover, that script is from an earlier colonial age when folks were probably still in "adapting to their surroundings" survival mode.
As in the case with most that cry about "conquest" like Leguizamo he is a direct descendant of the colonizers. Also, why does he go by an English name? Self-hatred is an ugly thing.
@@spalomino18 you dont know what you are talking about. In the revolution period spanish fought spanish. Do you think the leader of the S American revolution Simon Bolivar was a native american??? No he was another pure race spaniard. In fact he was from extremly distinguished spanish ancestry, from a very high noble family. Spanish fought "criollos", not mestizos or native americans. Criollos were white spanish born in americas, some of them decided to revolt against the king and get all the power for themselves following english advice. Native americans and mestizos fought in both armies, spanish army and rebel army. But once they got the independence while Spain fought Napoleon, they lost half of their territory in north america against the english colonialist. Native americans by the way were not classified as inferior by white spanish it was considered that pure native american ancestry was clean heritage. For that reason spanish wrote and noted all noble native american families and clans, aswell as languages. Spanish built universities to teach the children of native american noble families. In fact there are 500 known decendants from the aztec emperor Moctezuma, some of them live in Spain. Mexico is a republic, but if it decides to become a monarchy, the person with more rights to become "queen of Mexico" is Maricarmen de Luna, she lives in Spain as an aristocrath, and decends from both the aztec king Moctezuma and the conquistador of Mexico Hernan Cortes.

I love stories like this! Imagine my surprise when my cousin found out that we were direct line descent from the last high king of tir conell aka that last high king of Ireland and my my family’s kingdom is now MOST of Northern Ireland and that my family was sent to the far corners of the earth BY THE ENGLISH CROWN! I have the rarest surname in all of Ireland. 1% of my family still lives in our ancestral seat and the rest of us reside in the English colonies. There are so many records of family members accused of being witches and being killed for their land, made enemies of the crown and shipped off to the prison colonies of the Americas, New Zealand and Australia. Genealogy has proven who my dad’s family is and our history in the world. Hell one of my ancestors has a lake in Ontario, Canada named after him (Muldrew Lake) So many amazing people in my ancestry that I’m proud to know of and share the stories with my own children just like my dad did with us and my grandfather with him ❤
To anybody watching this… WATCH HIS STANDUP COMEDY!! It’s so unique.. it’s like a lost art of pure story telling mixed with incredible drama, emotion and hilarity. One of a kind!!
I love watching ALL these videos. Very fascinating stuff! I love how deep you guys go to find out the history of their ancestors. I would love to hear the history of my ancestors.
I too would love to hear about my ancestry. I know that my mother and my grandmother (mother's side) was Native American Indian but I'm not sure of much more than that. And I know practically nothing of my fathers side. I wouldn't even begin to know how to research either side. I hope that, if you do get the chance to find out you're history, that you find what you're looking for, I wish you all the best in your endeavor and I pray that you find peace and happiness as well 🙂 Good luck to you, always.
My favorite thing about watching these videos is reading the comments. Seeing people related to someone mentioned in the video find each other and learn they're related is fascinating!!!
Moctezuma has a statue in the Royal Palace in Madrid beside the other spanish Kings and Queens and their descendants own a palace up to this day. One of the Moctezuma's descendants founded the Spanish Guardia Civil. History was not as they have told you. Spanish recorded everything, so you can find the truth by yourself. Find about what Alexander Von Humboldt wrote about his travels to Hispanic America. We were all Spanish, the same country.
according to historical records, descendants of Moctezuma II, the Aztec emperor, still live in Spain today, with some holding the title "Duke of Moctezuma de Tultengo" and residing in places like Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca; indicating a lineage that continued through generations after the Spanish conquest of Mexico.

I have discovered many interesting things concerning my family over the last couple years of research including discovering some were Italian nobility and that one family branch even claims to be the descendants of the Byzantine emperor Isaac II Angelos. I also found connections to several defunct kingdoms including the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, the Kingdom of Illyria and the Kingdom of Candia.
This was the video that prompted me to go through my family tree. On my mother's side I found out I was a direct descendant of Saint Thomas More! I never would have known!
I’ve watched Finding Your Roots for soooo many years and have seen them find ancestors without knowing one of the parents (mother or father). That’s where I’m lost. I never knew my father and I no longer have anyone to ask. 😭😭😭.
May I offer my suggestions? If you haven't already, take an Ancestry DNA test. The algorithm will then start looking for matches. Your father will, obviously, have parents. Possibly he will have siblings, and most likely have aunts and uncles, who will all have children. You can start looking at the trees for those matches, especially the ones that are "close" (ie 1st & 2nd cousins, etc). As you explore _their_ stories, you'll probably come across clues to your own father's story. It's kind of like radar, where you do pings from multiple angles and it helps you triangulate. Also, if you know / knew your mother, you can review the details for her life around the time you were born. Combining those details with information from close DNA matches, you might see some possible overlap in time and place. That would help you take a step closer. Don't give up hope if it takes a long time to make any progress. Technology is always getting better. And others are doing their own research that might one day pop up as a clue for you. And be sure to use other sites and information sources, including library collections etc. Think of it like a really long scavenger hunt.
@@KimberlyGreen thank you for the suggestions. I have taken an Ancestry DNA test. I think back to the story of not knowing ANYTHING about my father I oftentimes I give up hope. At times, I even convince myself to “just forget” it. But, I ALWAYS get the passion for searching again. I’ve contacted several DNA matches from those who come from the region of my father’s Country to no avail. You’re right, though. Ancestry and technology changes. I keep hoping.

After watching so many of these, 50 plus easily on a binge, it seems that keeping your ancestors in mind and thought brings forth some kind of generational knowledge, if you will. Empowering. Maybe this is what's meant when people describe ancestor "worship". Maybe "worship" isn't the term that they should use. Connecting with your ancestors would be a better term maybe. I bet most people don't know much past their grandparents. Now I think I have to do this. I'm only 3rd generation American though and only know my great grandfather's name, who came here as a 6 yr old boy. I have one of the sweaters he wore as an old man. He told stories if his father but nobody remembers his father's name.
The only thing I can think of is that it was probably Hollywood survival. Unfortunately us Colombians were frown upon by the media, everyday people because of a few rotten bad people in the 80's and 90's and he probably just said it to be accepted and it probably got away from him. Not a bad guy John maybe a bad agent who suggested to tell everyone he was Puerto Rican to look more New York.
@@khansahb-o4e if he grew up surrounded by Puerto Ricans, Puerto Rican culture, food, dancing, dialect, etc., and somehow his parents didn't clarify his origins, it's possible he genuinely thought he was. On my mother's side, there was a lot of lore her father's side about having Irish and Native American herirage, along with a direct line into Germany. My genealogical research has shown me that this was improbable except maybe by individuals married into the family without bearing children or perhaps in a line of very distant cousins that would have no bearing on my genetic makeup. There are, however, lots of British people we all had no idea about who had escaped religious persecution from England. So maybe these people went incognito as other nationalities by the time the American Revolution came about?
My mother and aunt have done extensive research on our family history on my grandmother's side and have gone as far back as 500 years. They've tried with my grandfather's side but ran into a problem where they discovered her was actually adopted and took the surname Vasquez from the family that took him in. His surname was originally Gonzalez. They haven't been able to dive any further and have at this point just given up searching as they get older. I personally would like to continue the search. I've never met him because he died when my mother was a teenager. I'm named after him, John, though his name is Juan. As I was growing up the family would always make comments that I'm a carbon copy of him, in looks, demeanor, how I stand, speak, laugh, everything. Makes me feel blessed in a way and I feel like I have a deeper connection with him.
Most of us hispanics are all connected, I'm fully Mexican and have Spanish ancestors that settle in PR, we are all family, but political line divided us.
When I was much younger, I lived in NYC. A group of my friends were walking along the street and saw this sweet dog. We asked the owner if we could pet him and his owner allowed it but treated us as if we were the dregs of society. All we wanted was to greet his adorable pet. We realized afterwards that it was a famous actor. We vowed never to approach another celebrity (or pet) as this experience left us feeling small and, strangely, uneducated. Years later, the same group, saw John walking along the street. The energy he exuded was SO different - it was kind, sweet and approachable. I wish we did stop him, but we just smiled and watched him pass. I'll never forget it! I loved him then and love him now.
In the Spanish empire records were kept for absolutely everything, thank fully many of these documents contradict historically the black legends against the Spanish empire.
Great!!!, one of his potential "1,024" 8th generation great grandparents died a very rich man !!!, I love John Leguizamo. I just hate that people fall and get fooled for this type of content
Not to take anything away from the amount of effort that went into the research and it's certainly very interesting, but the findings are not that incredible when you think about it. You can pick any person and going back 6 generations, you'd have 6^2=64 direct ancestors, while going back 7 generation you'd have 7^2=128 direct ancestors. All those people survived rough times long enough to leave at least one child. So the chances are at least some of them would have interesting stories to tell. It's probably not possible to find information on all of those people, but if it's able to be done, the chances are it would be on those interesting ones.
Everyone is related to royalty. Today you can be Mr. Riff Raff but 300 years ago your slave grandma was 14 when the Masters teenage son accidentally walked into the bathroom while she was showering and BOING. And the Master had a genealogy all the way back to Charlamagne. I guess the real gem is actually being able to document your genealogy.
Ancestry with this promoter is a plea for help in of itself. Please don't abandon me. See how familiar we a are. Dwelling on history is an opportunity many of us don't identify with if there's nothing in it for us . Almost never self empowering in the present and entirely dependent on someone else.

@@seferinothat’s not what he meant. For example my friend is Salvadorian and grew up in a all Mexican community so he grew up culturally Mexican, he still salvadorian though. Same with JL, he grew up in a mostly Puerto Rican neighborhood. At the end of the day we are all brothers and sisters.
See, this is what I like about the Portuguese and the Spanish colonialism - that unlike their British counterparts, they didn't annihilate the entire race of people from the continents. They believed in converting the natives to Christianity rather than exterminating them like the British. And this comes from their Catholic background and them being a mixed race people with Arab admixture because of nearly 7 centuries of Arab Muslim rule in al-Andalusia. I'm not justifying colonialism and imperialism at all. I'm just making a comparison between the Portuguese/Spanish colonialism and British colonialism. That's why South and Central America have a huge Spanish admixture as many Spaniards intermarried or had illegitimate children with the Native populations. Whereas Canada and America (and also Australia) have a very tiny minority of Native population as most of them were massacred in a systematic and systemic way.
That’s one thing you can say about the Catholic Church in Mexico at the time. They were very methodical in birth, baptism, deaths and often wills left to the church. They recorded everything sometimes the method of death. I have found many of my ancestors and have crossed to Europe lines many times before the arrival to the Americas.
Hi there Toa, and thanks for your recent comment. We are delighted to hear you have enjoyed this episode, and we hope you continue to enjoy the rest of the season. Thank you for sharing! 🌳💚
In the show sometimes they show one side if the person is interested knowing the side of the family more . I noticed many celebrities going after the maternal side instead of the paternal side but I think is because is harder to follow your maternal line since surnames can change or add new ones once a woman marries and been the way for a very long time in many different cultures.
Maybe John asked for them to not do his dad considering that he has been saying for years his dad is Puerto Rican😅 I’m assuming he wouldn’t want to be outed like that but that’s just my humble opinion.
But are you really "Spanish royalty" if that spanish royal didn't even acknowledged your existence?? Leguizamo's ancestor was an illegitimate and in this case it was clearly a racial strife. Back then it was easier to dismiss unwed indian women who claim a child is theirs when child come out with dark features. So a Spanish man would say it's not theirs because the child does not look like them.

"where's my money?!?" - John 🤣
Benny Blanco? Carlito's Way?
@@spalomino18 Where you purchase the Spanish Black legend? In UCLA?
C'mon there's nothing to do the Spanish Empire to British Empire
@@spalomino18400 years??? Spanish speaking América had been free now for over 2 centuries! So who's corrupt now? Who's robbing you now? Who are the ones supposedly keeping you down? Is it SPAIN ?? He lied to us he is not half Puerto Rican 😂
Hell one of my ancestors has a lake in Ontario, Canada named after him (Muldrew Lake)
So many amazing people in my ancestry that I’m proud to know of and share the stories with my own children just like my dad did with us and my grandfather with him ❤
Fascinating 💚
I'm glad that my ancestry didn't have any mass murderers in it.
But I guess being brown allows you to get away with it. 😆 🤣 😂 😹
I love this show. I watch it every week…..even the reruns.
I have also discovered my Indigenous American and European ancestry. They were much closer than I thought. Very moving.
The indigenous Americans are actually White people, not the Asians that are referred to as Native Americans.
Love this man. Excellent actor in my opinion and I’m sure he’s also a great person, judging by the way he talks. 🙏
I liked the way he said thank you to Henry Gates. Can't quite put my finger on why. It seemed like genuine gratitude.
That’s it! We can really see and recognize true gratitude. How ever rare it may be.
Watching John humbley say Thankyou was so powerful you can see how much value this information brought this man that satisfied his curiosity congratulations John make more movies please❤
The gratitude he expressed was just as beautiful as his story ✨️
The ending statement John made was perfect.
Saludos.
Knowing John's life growing up in NY, this is a big thing. He was on a search for himself and his roots all his life. And there it is in black and white. Amazing!
I love to listen to these beautiful incredible stories of their family ancestry. It’s amazing to be connected to your own life blood through history. Thank you for sharing your journey with all of us here….

I have news for you. Many latinos have royal connections. My mother is a descendant of so many counts, royals, governors and Kings of Spain. She still found herself picking cotton and fruit in the fields of south Texas as a little girl with all of her siblings.
Those are the mestizos, not full blooded Spanish Nobility or full blooded Native Nobility
@@chestersabajo5527That makes no sense. Mestizos can be just as noble and royal as any, sometimes have noble ancestors from *both* of those groups. I literally have noble Mestizo ancestors, they weren’t just middle class or lower.
Being a Mexican man, I feel like they would only be able to tell me of my Spanish ancestry and not my native ancestry which is what I would truly want to know about.
You will be surprised some missions kept paperwork on our native ancestors... Before they were baptized with spanish last names
How do you know for sure? Everyone is different. For example Jessica Alba's mexican dad is not Spanish descent, but Native because he had the Native American Haplogroup Q

Thanks so much for stopping by to check out this clip from Finding Your Roots Cecilie, its great to know that you enjoyed about this new discovery made!
Lol he is the number 1 hollywood puppet
Proud indigenous 🪶
And he always claimed to be Puerto Rican, but he's not. Its still all love!
I love john, i think he is a very good actor, i love his role of Benny Blanco, he was awesome 🤩
He's been claiming to be Puerto Rican for so long I wanna see this full episode badly. His father outed him as Columbian
I was confused too because I taught the same as him being Puerto Rican this is the first time I hear him being Colombian.
Lol,, i remember that… his father said he was liar.. that he wasn’t Puerto Rican.
Wonder why he lied about something that was so easily refuted and by his own father?
@@nicolestanley38 probably because he's from ny and wanted to fit in with the other Hispanics
What a lovely find. Can you imagine all of this? Amazing absolutely amazing
He left out the part where he tried fooling everyone including himself by saying he was Puerto Rican
He is such a great actor
It really does say something about making your ancestors proud by carrying on your family line and doing the best you can.
Saved by the chisme! Thanks, priests for being the church’s version of Page Six.

Mr Leguizamo. I was raised in a little “barrio” in Mayaguez, PR named, barrio Leguizamo. You should look into that history.
He lied about being PRican for years. Guy is a complete phony
Most of us hispanics are all connected, I'm fully Mexican and have Spanish ancestors that settle in PR, we are all family, but political line divided us.
I know it's super personal I wish these things were longer it humanizes our favorite celebrities. 😍
And celebrities are human?

Mr. Leguzamo is a good actor....loved him in 'nothing to lose' with Mr. Martin Lawrence.
My roots were traced back to the year 1529. Blew my mind..🙏👑✝️

So where is his connection to Spanish Royalty?
Damn, a nosey curious Priest ended up helping genealogy. How incredible that is on it own,.
So touching
That was awesome!
When did his hair morph into the kind every produce store manager in Brooklyn has?
That’s one thing you can say about the Catholic Church in Mexico at the time. They were very methodical in birth, baptism, deaths and often wills left to the church. They recorded everything sometimes the method of death. I have found many of my ancestors and have crossed to Europe lines many times before the arrival to the Americas.

John Leguizamo was the star of Fox TV's House of Buggin'. It was "In Living Color with a Latino cast".
"The Militant Mexican Minute."
Is there a reason why they didn’t show his father’s side?
