    Thank you! This was very helpful as I am contemplating getting our first family milk cow. So happy to see you are strictly grass/hay!

    We just got a Jersey heifer and newborn calf and just getting set to start milking with the same surge milker system. Great video! Hello from New Brunswick, Canada

    My father bought a two unit surge in 1962 to milk 16 cows. We had a cross red whitehead, a real bad attitude, she kicked the plastic tops to bits. She ended up in the deep freeze. An she was tough in there as well. We had a lot of stews in 62.My mother used to trim the tails n udders, makes milking a lot easier. And will make watching your videos more comfortably. Farm safely.

      We had a black jersey that was difficult at times, kicked a little, swatted with her tail too. Sometimes she would pull back on her chain so hard she couldn't breathe. Had to put her in the freezer, too. Our current cows are very gentle and I will not keep any that are poorly behaved; safety first.

      Your post made me lol. We had one or two cows that destroyed harnesses, milk machines, barn doorways. . Anything that could happened, HAPPENED!! Those years of the 60's & 70's!! And, a few landed on our plates for meals as well.

    Thanks for posting the video. Push the belt forward on the cow so that the surging motion of the milker is enhanced, as it was designed to do. The milk tubes will straighten out when the surcingle is positioned properly. Do you filter the milk before drinking ?

    • @middleveldfarm7736
      @middleveldfarm7736  3 роки тому +1

      The belt tucks in between the hip bones and side bulges and I don't think it will go ahead any more. I will keep this mind when we start milking again in late summer. Filtering the milk is only done if I am giving it to others; there is usually nothing much in it anyway. The strainer is just one more step and one more item to wash.

      I love this. How we milked our Holsteins during 1960 & 1970. I just said to my friend the 'harness ' which the bucket hooked on to, needs to be moved forward. . However, love this, makes my heart smile from South Dakota.

      I love my surge milkers, i sell raw milk and i can really sanitize a surge well. One of my cows has back teats that hang down to her knees, it's fun milking her! Have to put the surcingle dang near up to her shoulders and click it in the back notch on the handle, but it works.

    • @middleveldfarm7736
      @middleveldfarm7736  2 роки тому +3

      We have been fortunate to have high udders on our jerseys. If I was selling milk I would sanitize twice daily as an act of responsibility on the part of the customers, but since it's only us drinking the milk I don't bother; one of the perks of subsistence farming! Glad you love milking, there are very few that do.

      @@middleveldfarm7736Only people who have lived on a farm know how much better the milk taste fresh and from barn to fridge.... My god I miss that taste. Had to sell the family operation back in the 90s and now theres just a few beef cattle for extra cash and food. Great video!!

    Thanks for this video . I am wondering about the surge Milker . I am try to get my hands on one but none seem to have the pump with them . Would any pulse pump
    Work ? Newbie alert . Or do you have any suggestions of what to look for ?

      I got mine at Hamby dairy supply online as a kit and the vacuum pump was included. It should work fine with any pump that is regulated at 12-15 inches of vacuum and has about 3cfm flow rate. HVAC vacuum pumps look like they would meet the requirements and are pretty cheap. The pump I have is a Conde long life and sells separately for over $1000. Last I checked the HVAC was under $100. Probably will get one as an emergency back up.

    • @middleveldfarm7736
      @middleveldfarm7736  Рік тому

      It is too much for two cows. I bought it when I had 4 cows and wanted to sell milk. Should be good for 3 cows. I sold it last summer when I went to two cows. Worked great and chilled the milk quickly.

    When we lose suction we are having a hard time rebuilding it. Do you think our vacuum might be too weak? Or is it something else?

    • @middleveldfarm7736
      @middleveldfarm7736  3 роки тому

      I use the red inflation plugs to limit vacuum loss, as my pump is fairly low capacity . If you lose vacuum it takes a little while to rebuild since the bucket is so big .Could be a leak in the supply line,too.

      @@middleveldfarm7736 Thanks for your reply. One more question. I have heard that Jerseys can be prone to milk fever especially high producing ones. Have you ever had the problem? If so any cures or preventative measures?

    • @middleveldfarm7736
      @middleveldfarm7736  3 роки тому +1

      I have not had any problems with milk fever. I breed for spring calves in May so my cows are on pasture with good nutrition and because I don't feed any grain they are not overproducing milk. Since it's not an issue here I am not sure what the preventative measures would be. Sorry for responding late, just saw your comment today, they don't always show up on the website.
