Meet Maybe, my 4 year old, feral, beef Dexter cow. She's lived a life untouched, and untamed. Because of that, I've been told by everyone that it's too late for her to become a dairy cow...but we'll see about that!
    MORE ABOUT ME
I'm Anne of All Trades. In NASHVILLE, I have a woodworking, blacksmithing and fabrication shop, a selection of furry friends, and an organic farm. Whether you've got the knowledge, tools, time or space to do the things you've always wanted to do, everything is "figureoutable."
I became "Anne of All Trades" out of necessity. With no background in farming or making things, I wanted to learn to raise my own food, fix things when they break and build the things I need.
8 years ago I got my first pet, planted my first seed and picked up my first tool.
My goal is to learn and share traditional techniques and skills while showing my peers how to get from where they are to where they want to go, how to do the things they are passionate about, and what can be done TODAY to engage their own community and grow deep roots.
Whether it's carving spoons, making my own hand tools, restoring my antique truck or growing heirloom tomatoes, the farm and workshop definitely keep me busy and support - whether financially through Patreon, through shopping my affiliate links, through buying merchandise, plans or project videos, or even just liking, commenting, and sharing my content with others helps me GREATLY to keep producing quality content to share.

First time ever hearing about a feral cow. Learned something new today. 😊
And I remember decades ago when milk purchased from the grocery store actually had flecks of butter/cream in it and would actually coat the sides of the ‘glass jar’!
    (Yep! I’m that old!😅)

Fortunately in Australia that milk is back in has the cream on top has been parturized but not homogenised and its nearly the same price as the cheaper milk. Hubby and i cannot go back now to what he calls that watered down shit we used to drink.

Extremely cool! It was lovely watching her gradually get comfortable with you.
I love Temple Grandin's work. Her idea of using gentle pressure (squeeze chute) to calm down herd animals is so interesting. There's another (much less practical) invention called the Wheat Pressure Box which was invented for taming mustangs. Grandin did a write up of it on her website.
Years ago we were helping someone draw blood from a crazy ass mare who was not putting up with it at all. We finally placed her against a solid wall, and then we lined up and leaned quietly on her flank. She settled down enough so they could draw the blood. At the time I thought we were restraining her, but after learning about Grandin's work, I think we were mostly helping her calm down.
Another approach is Tellington TTouch massage. It was invented for horses, but it's also been used on cattle and dogs.

Congratulations on gaining her trust. Temple Grandin is such an amazing person. I was never diagnosed with autism - when I was a kid they just said "Something's not right with that boy". Watching that movie and reading some of her writing, allowed me to see myself in a new light and seek a therapist that could help me.

Your personality is very high energy and lighthearted while still being honest and vulnerable with your struggles. Growing up my father bought 5 calves from the neighbor dairy farmer . They were his"special" mix they were 3/4 Angus 1/8 Gersy and 1/8 Holstein. If you saw them you would think that they were just Angus. They were great cows they gave more milk than a straight beef cow so they raised good beef calves. They didn't give so much milk that they had to be milked but made a nice family milk cow. He broke them to lead and milk.

Mom's neighbors had three fresh cows. She would let os make butter from the top inch by shaking in a cold Mason jar till the butter made. The rest in the jar got vinegar added to make clabber milk biscuits. They raised a rescued fawn off one cow that would actually suckle. Came back to visit twice a year for five years to show her baby. Had two one year.

Congrats on your victory! I truly believe the main reason for your success is approaching it how the cow would think. It's amazing to me how many people in this day and age still try to force animals into doing what they want them to do instead of trying it the gentle way of encouraging the animal to do what you want them to do. It's way easier on everybody and oftentimes a lot more successful! Thank you for showcasing that.

I came across one of your videos last night, and spent the past 9 hours binge-watching one after another. I grew up on a farm like yours and the animals WERE my friends. It's 40 years later, and I am back on the same land, but without the animals and only 1 barn is still standing. I didn't have the benefit of Temple Grandin's books to help me understand why I am the way I am. That path of discovery began after my dad passed away 2 years ago. I had to figure out why the rest of my family wouldn't accept me for who I am. Dad was the only one who didn't try to change me into someone else. I think he knew I was different, and that's why we moved to the farm and got all the animals. None of my older siblings really cared for the farm or the animals, but they were everything to me. I miss them, and I miss my dad. I do have my dog, though, and my garden, which are just about all I have the energy for after a full day at work.
Anyway, I am thankful that I saw your channel. I will definitely check out your website. I figure I can "go back to the good ole' days" vicariously through your videos. I truly appreciate you sharing your adventures with us. I am also glad your cows are ok. We didn't milk our cows. They would have torn us to bits. The cows were for beef and the goats were for milk, and that worked out well for us.

I watched this video sitting in my office chair, twisting my torso the other direction so that I'd be able to whip my head away and not see if the cow went bonkers. Good job! Oh, and thanks for the opportunity to stretch.
