OMG! I was having a passionate conversation with someone in a store about pirates and gathered the courage to ask for her email. She gave it, I read it back to her, and when I got home I sent an email, only for it to bounce back. It was an invalid address.

Hmm! I’ve never heard of it referred to as a squish! Maybe it’s something like a country thing? Or maybe it’s just what people get taught it’s called depending on the person- idk lol- but that cool!

As far as I know the term was coined in the aromantic/asexual community in regards to different kinds of "crushes" for different attractions. So crush is for romantic attraction, squish is for platonic attraction, and there also some like mesh or swish for alterous or asthethic attraction, I might confuse it here though. But it's definitely worth into researching. I think you can find this under "split attraction model"

The only song I've found so far that examines friendship as the genuine love it is, with all its complexities, is called "Dear Friend" by the late Bill Staines, a legend in the folk-style singer-songwriter community. I truly cannot recommend that song enough (or, frankly, the music of Staines in general; the poetic beauty of his lyrics can be heart-stopping).

The other entries on the list are as follows:

"Heart of Hearts" by Great Big Sea. This is specifically about friendship between a small group of people bonded through traveling together for common cause.

"Now and For Always" from the Lord of the Rings stage musical (which was, in fact, a thing that existed, and though it suffered the obvious shortcomings of trying to tell so long and sweeping a story in the space of just a couple hours, the music is great). This is a more specific song than some others, not necessarily applicable to too many situations.

"Brothers in Arms" by Dire Straits, as covered by Celtic Thunder. Not a happy song, by any means, and somewhat specific to a particular variant of friendship.

There's the credits song from Monsters Inc., "I Wouldn’t Have Nothing If I Didn’t Have You”, a song I recall considering to be an underrated gem in general; but it's been years since I heard it, so it might not be as good as I remember, as memory is a fickle thing when emotions are involved.

While we're talking about Pixar, we obviously have “You've Got a Friend In Me” from Toy Story, but we also have the credits song from Toy Story 3, “We Belong Together”, which I recall as being appropriately emotionally strong for how emotional that movie is; but again, it's been a few years since I've heard it (a situation I should remedy), so take that with a grain of salt and prepare to be your own judge.

And my most recent addition to this list, a song I do not know the context of and thus do not know for a fact is about friendship-love, but the lyrics sure strike me as friendship-love, is “Carried Me With You”, which I found out literally just now in looking it up for this comment is apparently also from a Pixar film? I am not caught up on Pixar, like, at all; I was first introduced to this song by a very local cover artist who was also the music director for the amateur cast at my home Ren Faire that year. (It's also literally the only good song that plays over the loudspeakers at my place of employment.)

Honorable mention goes to “You're Not Alone” by Erutan, another song I don't know the exact context of. It's from her album of songs from videogames, “A Bard's Side-Quest”, and evidently hails from Final Fantasy IX. I'm sure that the context of the song is probably of a romantic nature, but as that is not directly stated in the lyrics, I've always enjoyed interpreting it a deep platonic/friendship love.

And because this comment isn't already long enough, I do have a quick recommendation for some really good music that doesn't fall into the category of friendship-centric, but does fall thoroughly into the category of not-about-romance. Miracle of Sound, the artist name of one Gavin Dunne, an independent producer/singer-songwriter based on UA-cam and Bandcamp (and, y'know, the internet in general). His music is almost all based on / about various stories from various media (videogames, TV, books, movies); but he writes it in such a way as to focus on themes from the tales rather than specific characters and events from them. In other words, meaning can be found and applied to one's own life with zero prior knowledge of the inspiration / source materiel; but knowledge of the inspiration / source materiel will reveal additional layers of lyrical depth.
.
The only genre I can assign his work is fanmusic, as his repertoire covers pretty much every single genre you could possibly think of, as well as some you maybe couldn't, and he has a knack for matching the sound of the source material without copying it.
.
The key reason Miracle of Sound jumps to my mind upon reading the very true statement “There's way too many songs about romance already” is a reply he left to a comment on uhhh some song, hecked if I know which one, saying that he prefers to “write lyrics that everyone can relate to”. That particular comment means a whole lot to me as someone without the capacity to experience romantic attraction, because there is very rarely anything about romance in his songs, despite so much of his inspiration containing romantic subplots.
.
All that being said, please drop the titles of any friendship-centic songs you may happen to know, as I'd love to get my word-document into double-digits.

Honestly I have this crush that is with someone sadly- When we met he asked me soooo many questions. Later that day I realized I had feelings for him. Every time he looked at me I just felt something. He looked at me fondly like I was someone he knew his whole life. It kinda made me sad to see him with someone else instead of me. About a week later he knew I liked him, but instead of acting like he usually did he started staying away from me. The next day made me cry; a friend of a friend had told me he said my crush said he hated me and thought I was ugly. (Though I though this was true I still don’t know.) One day my friends went to this water park with me and welllll of course he was there. I tried staying away from him but it felt like he kept following me. I was about to race my friend on one of the rides and he cut the line to get in front of my friend next to me and he looked at me with that smile. And asked the person next to me (my friend) if they could get in front of him. And there he was purposely getting next to me. I thought this was odd. So we raced. (Of course I won) After we were done I couldn’t say much. I never can talk to him. I’m a year older tho. Anyway I didn’t mean for it to be so long. I think he liked me?
