I am a penholder and i know the disadventage of being a penhold but I choose to be a penhold cause it makes me do a lot of footwork ,that way i stay fit and lean.
I don't think shakehand is superior to penhold. If you have a good react skill penhold can be very deadly for shakehand. I just see more fun playing penhold.
Thanks. I agree. I think PH is nicer aesthetically and the strokes are more interesting in my opinion. Plus, PH is what I learned first so it's more comfortable for me.
Like Xu Xin said (Translated): "Despite that there are disadvantages of being a Penhold, there are more positive points from it. And in playing table tennis, we all need to diversify."
Chris Choi well i used to play table tennis long ago was good at it...I was a penhold player, if you master it is very powerful..I had a china coach who also held penhold ,his serves were unstoppable. Don't think you can create the same spin with shakehand..
Excelent as always Geca... The advantage of a penholder is for sure the capability of using their forehand in almost every point of the table... by the way my favorite penhold player is indeed Wang Hao, cuz his topspin game and his great reverse backhand that complements his forehand...
GecaPhoenix I remember watching your vids a few years back and actually requested you to make this vid. Stumbled upon it once again. Ah, such good memories. Been a while since i picked up my bat. In the mood right now.
@BollForte94 Hehe, you're right bro, amazing point!;D But I already put that point in many videos,so I choose to put new points(for example Ma Lin vs Ma Long or Ma Lin vs Tang Peng ecc...). Thanks for your comment. :)
@GecaPhoenix no - thank you for the vids. And mine is Xu Xin as well, can't think of more powerfull forehand. Love his match agains Ma Long, awesome rallies.
I love penholders. I'm shakehand but I want to turn into penholder. The only weakness is the backhand,in penhold technique I find natural to do the backhand like japanease penholders grip does, but I admit that penhold reverse backand of chinese penhold grips is so much powerful and effective. I'd like to try a chinese penhold blade to try the reverse backhand, but I have just little portion of blade to do this, from the middle to the border,is easy to miss the hit. Long life to penholders!
Valter Bastianelli my penhold backhand is very powerful on neutral balls more powerful than shake hands playrs but my top spin on chop balls is not effective.
Hey Geca, I like so much of your videos and I was waiting for someone like this one because I'm a Penholder player... Great Video! Congratulations! Oh, and I would like to see you make a video like a tribute or something like that for JO Waldner... I think he's the best of all times!
since 1988, 4 times olympic champions by penholder!!! Love more the style of jp-pen -so grace- like Kim taek soo and ryu seung min then chinese-pen. but wang hao, xu xin and in 80s jiang jialing (many forget about this very beautiful played style) are also good... thanks....
@GecaPhoenix Xu Xin´s matches are pure ecstasy, he has one of the fittest bodies, most aggressive styles and both the technique and determination to be #1 !!!
@ttmaster10 Actually my first coach was my dad who taught me with the penhold grip but when i trained with a new coach i learned shakehand... actually both are pretty fun to play.. but the only thing i got stuck with was i got used to getting many shots by my forehand.
The penhold grip, in my opinion, is harder to perfect than shakehand, especially the reverse penhold. I have gone from a regular penhold(japanese & chinese) to a reverse penhold, & now to shakehand. I feel that the shakehand is quicker on the backhand side & easily blocks heavy loopers on both sides. Penhold has better control & touch on serves but shakehand has better returns. Ultimately, it lies in the hands of the player as to how good he wants to be w/ any style. As Ma Lin w/ penhold.
PENHOLD ROCKS \m/ OH BY THE WAY IM A PENHOLDER! :D AND I AGREE THAT PENHOLD HAVE THE MOST POWERFUL TOPSPIN! THATS WHY I LOVE BEING A PENHOLDER! I SALUTE ALL THE PENHOLDERS! :D
Think of this: Current World Champion: Penholder: Wang Hao The last two olympic champions: Penholder: Ryu Seung Min and Ma Lin No Shakehander :D If you mastered the chinese penholder you are unbeatable
look at that footwork at 2:00 clip by Ma Lin. Thats ungodly. There is no other player than him who can position himself so perfectly for every shot. Its only a shame he was playing Ma Long at the time who was the only player at the time who couldve won that point.
It is the penholders that add the much needed personality and unpredictability to the sport, similar to what single-handed topspin backhands are to tennis. They are both dying arts in their sports dominated by robots.
Anyone else have no idea how they learned to do penhold? The first time I played ping pong I had no idea what shakehold or penhold was and never watched ping pong in my life, yet I somehow used the penhold without anyone teaching me or showing me what it looked like. It's really strange.. maybe it's because I'm Chinese.
I am a penholder and i know the disadventage of being a penhold but I choose to be a penhold cause it makes me do a lot of footwork ,that way i stay fit and lean.
Just curious - do you think shakehand is better? Why?
I don't think shakehand is superior to penhold. If you have a good react skill penhold can be very deadly for shakehand. I just see more fun playing penhold.
Thanks. I agree. I think PH is nicer aesthetically and the strokes are more interesting in my opinion. Plus, PH is what I learned first so it's more comfortable for me.

The perfect Penhold player is someone who has the RPB of Wang Hao, Killer FH and amazing Footwork of RYU SEUNG MIN and the mental toughness of MA LIN.
Xu xin?

Love his match agains Ma Long, awesome rallies.
@tanguydu222 penhold is the style of the players how they hold the racket. for example: Timo Boll plays shakehand and Ma Lin plays Penhold
@007StevenS :D
Thanks Steven!:)
I wanna see Waldner playing penhold... After seeing this vid haha. So for Waldner, just record a video with you playing penhold style.
a.k.a., the Ma Lin and Xu Xin show. Thanks for putting this together.
I love penholders. I'm shakehand but I want to turn into penholder.
