Thanks for watching.
As a simpleton, maybe I did misunderstand. But the drama on your channel is overwhelming and not overlanding. I enjoyed your videos thoroughly and I hope good luck to you, sir.
That smile in your face when saying: the high ace. And the troopy. Just says everything. Wish you the best with those builds.
I have a HDJ79R with the 1HD-FTE. It is a 2002 model and I have had it since new. It currently has approximately 320k on the clock. It has taken me to Cape York 6 times, the CSR, Gunbarrell, Simpson, Madigan, Anne Beadell, Connie Sue, etc…you get the picture. I don’t know how many offers I’ve had to sell the vehicle but I just tell the people that make the offers that I will add you to the list. Great vehicle and an exceptional motor.
2003 with 255000km mate like you its not for sale
Now I know why I loved my old Disco 2 V8 so much. It was gutless and burnt fuel like a road train, but damn it felt good. Mind you, off road it was absolutely beautiful.
The very late 80 Series actually have the 1HD-FT, in essence, a non-intercooled, mechanical injection version of the 1HD-FTE. It is 24-valves like the 1HD-FTE, but still has the simplicity of the earlier 12-valve 1HD-T.
Had one in an 80 series that did 500,000 , just an alternator and a starter motor in all that time, starter mother can be changed over in 15 minutes.
Great review Andrew! I know what you mean about 'the feel'. I had the same in my 4.2lt V8 Maserati Quattraporte with the F126 Ferrari engine. Purred like a Tiger and ran like a Cheetah. Always made me smile everytime. That's what it's all about. The same applies in the Overlanding world to.
Hi Andrew, I drive a 1986 BJ73 FRP with the 3B 3.4 diesel engine. I must say I love it, because it forces you to unwind because it's so slow that you have time to look around and absorb everything around you while getting overtaken by a truck.-))
It's a nice feeling being able to appreciated the slow drive. Like you said you absorb so much more. 👍
Thank you Andrew for being so articulate in your review of the 2.8.
Have to say I could not bring myself to look at one in the troopie or the new Prado no matter what some people spin .
Will keep my 2020 200 series till parts are no longer available or they ban diesel vehicles.
Thank you 🙏
I agree with your summary. My summary years ago was a 110 landy with toyota 4.2 powerplant !
had a quick google if you could fit the toyota v8 diesel in a defender haven't found anything yet 😪
I had a 2021 VDJ LC76 and I loved the sound and feel of that engine. It just felt amazing. I now drive a Hilux with a 2.8L. You are 100% correct that it is NOT the same feeling.
@@jamesmazurstudios I also love my 76
The feel when driving a car for me is important as well. I have a old Land Rover Discovery series 1 v8, I love driving that old girl, its just fun, fantastic off road. We also have a Pajero v6, it has way more power, way more comfortable, very quiet to drive but it just not give you that feeling when driving.
I agree. To me the V8 has "soul"(yeah I know it sounds stupid but I have no other way of explaining that feeling) something a 4 or a 6 just doesn't have.
It doesn't sound stupid - everything has a frequency, I get what you mean.
It's the irregular firing order with the cross plane crank. Say the firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. Occasionally there is 2 detonations on the same bank of cylinders, not left bank right bank left bank right bank. These irregular pulses down the exhaust gives it it's rumbling sound.
A Ferrari has a flat plane crank. They go left right left right. That's why they are high reving and scream rather than shout.
An inline 4 typically has a flat plane crank. Exhaust pulses and their length are smooth. That's why a corolla just hums like a sewing machine.
In short, cross plane is a heavy rumbly low revving, a flat plane is whines and is high revving.
@@aslkdfjhgSound aside aren’t inline motors more torquy than V designs?
I'm really looking forward to the HiAce build to see how the concept comes out.
I’ve had all the motors mentioned they have all got good points but can’t hide the fact that the 2.8 is definitely the most refined and effortless to drive. Yes it has lost some pedigree but it’s become the most versatile 4x4 van from factory to date.
Pillow talk with ASPW. It's good to hear that you're venturing up to my neck of the woods (Arnhem Land). The scenery is magnificent.
1hz for straight up reliability, 1HDFTE for reliability and power in a relatively uncomplicated engine, 1VD for pure power.
The FTE was available for a short stint in the 78 Troopys and 79 single cabs and they fetch a massive premium. I’m talking $50k for 400,000km engine premium. Nuts
That's crazy
My FTE is making more power than a chipped V8. FTE when built and tuned has more power than the V8.
Kind of relieved you confirmed my own belief about the feel the V8 provides. It may or may not eventuate, but I may keep my 79 for longer than I thought, and way past the current four and a half years. I’m thinking to keep making incremental improvements to bring it screaming and kicking into the twenty first century.
When you put a set of headers and 2.5" exhaust, and then open-air vent the crank case vent on a 1HZ you get sweetness. No need to play with the fuel pump, just standard it will be reliable and pull hard, not like the 24valve, but good for what it is.
I appreciate your knowledge! Has helped me picture what setup I want going into my future 4x4 setups.
I have a 2.8 auto 79 running 285's (32.7") and it cruises at 110Km/h in 6th no problems.
What are you weighing in at? Old mate said he's over 3.3T
@@mattycrebo With only the ali tray fitted and full fuel and water tanks I am 2620Kg.
With the Jacksons camper canopy on the back I am 3250Kg. But the camper lives on wind up legs in the tractor shed when I'm not camping.
thank you 🤝
I can relate, I owned a Ducatti Multidtrada 1260 and changed to the V4S, the V4S is too refined, the 1260 just had a vibe. I'm keeping my V8 Double cab. Thank you for an excellant review
It is impossible not to love a V8. I had a V8 mustang and the feel and sound just makes you smile. I have a 300tdi defender now. Nuff said…

If I recall correctly, your first 4x4 was a RangeRover 3.5 v8. This was mine!! Still my all time favourite. No complex electronics. All wheel drive full time. Best comfort suspension and best glass viewing…. The V8 was special!
still my favourite. Did you watch Friends Cross the Canning series? If you didn't. you really missed out. A RR in all its glory.
@@4xoverland ah yes. Some time back. Good reminder for a review.
Hey Andrew, I have a late 80 series which I FTE swapped also from a 1hz last year!
It’s an Amazing power plant you will love the results!
On another note you mentioned late 80 series having the option for FTE, but they actually didn’t, however they had the 1HDFT which was also multivalve but does have a different pump as it’s entirely mechanical unlike the FTE which is a hybrid pump with electronic control paired with the unichip is an amazing upgrade you should do!
And that’s why I said few months back selling the grey Troopy (Your masterpiece) will be not a good idea. Simply you cannot beat the cubic capacity. Loving my 24 V8 Troopy
Excellent, honest review Andrew....saying it as it is !
The Blue/Gray V8 is the best vehicle you’ve ever build. In the same time it is the best vehicle I’ve ever seen. It just looks perfect. It’s a shame that one have to choose between the V8 Manual and the 2.8 A/T. A V8 A/T would solve all problems. Imagine how that V8 would rock the roads with a 6 speed Automatic transmission 🤤
Wholesale Autos conversion
Toyota actually bought out the Troopy with that exact engine (4.2 FTE) in Australia. They call it the unicorn as there wasn’t many of them and if u manage to find one - u keep it forever…
And it was not in production till 98 so the 80 series never had it, Andrew must have driven it with the FT, which is also an epic motor
They are widely available in Africa
I drove in Arnhem Land in the 1990s and would love to see it again!
Will it be here or on the private channel?

The 2.8 might give you more economy but the V8 gave you reliability!
Your reflecting bonnet, Mat paint isn’t pretty but it’s very affective to stop the glare.
True, but I think as importantly, more durability; these V8's from factory don't break a sweat.
That feel story is REAL.. i owned a 2005 Subaru Wrx which gave me endless issues but i absolutely loved that car! recently i purchased a GR Yaris, which on paper should of been a faaar better car than the Subaru, but it just wasnt.. there was just something missing, had that vehicle for less than year and sold it.
ASPW you give eloquent expression as a driver to what many of us feel but are unable to find the words and give expression to;
Listening to you I identify with you on this topic; thanks for helping me 'put a handle on' this.
Love your videos and I will be onboard with your new endeavours.
Many years ago one would consider the manual gearbox to be more economical to drive than the auto box, but with the advent of centrifugal clutches on auto boxes, that is really no longer the case as it locks the auto to the power-train.
Yes quite. That eliminates slip, but there is still the drag?
- do you mean lockup torque converters?? (terminology gaps)
- gear shifting wet clutches being computer controlled - solenoid actuated bakes a difference too.
@ ah yes I was thinking about the torque converter lock. But he may have meant the DSG type gearbox. Vw designed automatically operated direct gearbox without slip - no torque converter. Others have copied. I wouldn’t want this off road at slow speed. I have just such a one. Try a slow reverse into an uphill park. Painful. Great for road performance. Designed for the bugatti veyron to outperform in motor racing. Off road? Towing? Torque converter any day. I have X3. Open road cruising torque converter lock assists economy.
Thanks for sharing and taking us along
Very interesting video mate. As we have a 120 Prado because of our budget we are dreaming of having a troopy one day 🎉 your videos make us dreaming 💭 greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
Hey Andrew, will the episodes be your usual 20 minute (ish) episodes on the other channel, or what you've currently got over there (~1hr episodes)?
A bit of feedback from me (if it is of any value), I prefer the 20 minute bites, as I can watch them more easily than the daunting 1hr+ episodes.
I'm really looking forward to this year's content!
shorter eps on this channel, long form on the other.
Defender 300 TDI full time all wheel drive - lots of low down torque ?
As always - informative and entertaining! Thank you Andrew. I (finally) understand the channel set up - this one for reviews, technical and builds - and ASPWexperience is for expeditions?
Agree. Snymans did my FTE rebuild (it already was in the 105 and it had a mechanical pump"less electronics I suppose). Grunt is there idling through tough tracks is easy wouldn't change it at all. Fuel consumption "we don't talk 😂" but as you say the feeling is there. Had a quiet free flow exhaust fitted just thought that a grumble is great for a short distance but not for days on end.
Gearbox: don't know what you got but I have permanent 4 wheel drive with a centre lock and front and rear lock(all factory).
Very strong setup though I am saving for diffs and gearbox to have a look over.
Looking forward to seeing your Africa build.
Cheers
Re a GVM upgrade: If you are going to replace the suspension anyway (which most do on a 70 series) then it is hardly any more expensive to get a GVM upgrade along with the new suspension, even if you don't think you need it. The GVM certification from ARB is $600 (from memory), and the components you use are identical whether you get it certified or not. So that doesn't seem a lot of money to get more legal headroom on your axle loads, and on your payload. If you never use it, then no problems, but it gives you a bit of legal wiggle room if you go over GVM even rarely.
Don't tune the ECU to allow 6th gear at 105 kph. Too low RPM on the long distance is not good for the engine lubrication! At low rpm the engine has low oil pressure, but the load on the crankshaft is very high. Eventually the oil wedge between the liners and the crankshaft may fail and break. The engine will start to run dry on the crankshaft liners, causing them to fail.
The engine needs some average revs to get good lubrication and to work well.
If you want a 6th gear at 105 kph, lower your gears👍.
The engine sound/vibration. I feel the same way about the straight 6 (now 4.4 liter) engine in my FJ40.
It’s good to listen to the OG over lander.
Mr Dahl should go on a remote trip with you in his appliance lol
R.Dahl and Andrew have completely different driving styles specially on remote roads.
@ yes well aware of that.. again it’s how you feel when you turn the key
Hi Andrew
I agree regarding the 2.8 and v8, the visceral experience of the v8 is something else, my Hilux's with the 2.8 were fine, but felt as though I was driving a Tesla in comparison to a v8 LandCruiser. Sounds ridiculous but I really mean that, for me, a vehicle is not just a tool to move me from place to place. It's an extension of myself in a way, it's an experience. The feeling i get every morning firing up that motor is a feeling of appreciation, happiness and reassurance. Meandering along on a 45 degree day down some fence line in the desert with the radiator and intercooler full of grass seeds, not over heating. (5000km Service intervals) people can say what they want about the 1vd-ftv, look after it and it'll look after you. I love manuals and the fte is incredible.
I had a Trophy 78 from 2004. In Italy I replaced the 1Hz engine with the 1HD engine, the H150F transmission and the reduction gear part-time designed for the FZ78 model. The only problem was that the 43:10 bevel gears were too short, so they were replaced with 41:11.
with this configuration I traveled through the Sahara for 250000km and 15 years . an exceptional engine for the overlander
Now I have another trophy 78 but GRJ with a 6V petrol engine.
how do you like that petrol engine?
@@naceks It is very quiet, no vibration, good cruising speed and very high performance on sand. It has the same torque as the 1HD engine although at a higher speed. It consumes more than diesel, but having an additional tank for a total of 300L I still have 1200-1500km of autonomy.
@@markocaoos thank you for your comment!
The V8 has soul, if they would have came out with a V8 auto it would have been ideal.
Interesting Thankyou.

Make sure that you havnt got something wrong with the gearbox.
Have you fitted significantly bigger tyres? That could stop it going into 6th too

Yep, I have a 3l hilux that was bought as a necessity in tight timeframe due to writing off a vehicle. I have not invested in it, I don’t enjoy it and yet it’s hard to get rid of when it’s costing me nothing but it is preventing me enjoying trips cause I don’t want to drive it and funds are directed at our house at the moment. An appliance with no joy what so ever. :(
Any news on the UK having the 79 series?
never, ever. no chance ever.
Good luck getting an Anthem Land permit for anywhere. Coburg and Gove are about it for most people unfortunately
Matt & Holly from "Overland Travellers" got permits a few months ago - great set of UA-cam videos and they explain about the permits required and how they got them.
@@spudboy1328 that's for East Arnhem land, which is the area around Gove. Good luck trying to get West Arnhem permits.

Lovely Ep and setup,
I get a similar feeling with my v8 manual falcon work ute. I had a six cylinder auto falcon and its just a fact they are just better in nearly every way. Servicability, reliability, parts availability and not far off the mark for power. Whist the 6 would be better overall for the purpose it just dosent match the v8 for "feel" and cheering my mood on the drive home from a bad day.
Sadly the gear box and diffs aren't strong enough to have the full power v8 that's why Toyota have the power set where they do and are very keen to take away the warranty. Put a non standard exhaust on and they remove drivetrain warranty.
Hi Andrew, understand about the V8 feeling 100%. I have a 2009 76 series in NZ and a 2008 Troopy in Aus, so why do I prefer the Troopy over the 76? Both have 2” lift, both same tyres, but I have no idea? There’s just something about the Troopy that makes it different.
I took a new 76 4 cylinder for testing for 3 days and along with a lot of other things it just wasn’t like my 76. I told the Toyota dealer that if they wanted to give it to me I would accept it great fully, but I would never buy one.
I think of engines almost as Musical Instruments with how they are constructed and how they work, and Human beings are Musical creatures 😉
Might call a good vehicle like the v8, an 'Instrument'
I like that. Can I use it? The 2,8 is an appliance, while the V8 is an instrument.
@@4xoverland yea sure! Love your unique realistic views/ opinion on the 70 series 👏🙂

Berrima Diesel and Lock Up Torque Converter
100% Andrew!
The 4 cylinders got better. The Toyota 2.4L diesel engine for the Hilux 35 years ago was only like 65kw of power. Now the 2.8L turbo diesel is 150kw while being Euro 6 compliant.
The rate petrol engines are improving in fuel economy, I wouldn't be suprised if you see petrol options in the future for the 70s series.
Hi, thank you! I have a question: where can I purchase the troopy V8 in NSW? Toyota only shows the 2.8 option available on their website. I would like to buy a V8, how can I go about doing this? Thank you!
No more V8 orders being taken. If you want one, it'll only be 2nd hand from now on.
Personally, I hate the sound of the V8. It sounds so unrefined, like a bucket of bolts. The fact that it a diesel does that. But different strokes for different folks.
That’s all about the V8 diesel. The rumble
I don’t get the argument of a tuned V8 will out perform against the 2.8. You spend 90k on a car and if you tune it you void the engine warranty. The 2.8 is underrated anyone who has driven them says it out performs the V8 in every aspect from factory. There are loads on 2.8 Prados that are turned and with “improved performance” I have 315/70r17’s on mine and it holds 6th gear on the freeway around 2k rpm
Great to see the highly strung 2.8L vs a lazy 4.5L..
(as a feeling - the lighter 2.8 boogies, heavy, they will be similar -with the same transmission (IF) - similar power output.)
SO is it now "just" another Commercial Toyota vehicle.
(Turbo diesels, especially - fuel has more to do with direct power usage than engine RPM - 150kW simply uses 160kW worth of fuel..)
Would be good to see for those with families - towing long term...
(obviously a task for a different channel.)
Anything towing a heavy trailer puts a greater wear and tear load on the engine and drivetrain, vehicle alone at GVM is scarcely working - at low acceleration..
Our mid weight offroad vehicles are perfect for the tracks developed for and by this size of vehicle ~1850-1900mm overall width, going for full size trucks (2450mm) to get "higher real GVM is a whole other experience.
Hi Andrew. Agreed on the 1HD FTE. Toyota’s finest hour. Hands down. More reliability than the V8
The V8 sounds and feels better. The 2.8 is better in almost every other way (apart from not getting as much of a tune out of it)
So why is it that every single diesel mechanic I have discussed it with to date, and I mean the best in their game, all say go the V8 if you have the choice?
To 6x6 enthusiasts or those contemplating a conversion, forget the 2.8 because I have it from the horses mouth that it won't be on that platform
At least from one builder that is. Ain't gonna happen.
- for a 6x6 forget the 2.8L in anything - a 4.5L has so much more headroom between the basic tune and "the moon" (Toyota engine and drivetrain warranties no matter if the tune is by a reputable shop - AND offroad things break from time to time; pay to play)- plus if a factory 6x6 with 4500kg (4495) GVM - 4500kg towing (towbar hitch) the larger motor is so much better suited to being worked its entire life.

15:45 You dont double de-clutch in any modern vehicle. Why are you double de-clutching in a range rover? Eh?
Modern Range Rovers have auto trans. If you are asking means you've not changed gear with an old gearbox. To do a fast down-change, double de-clutch is necessary. (This is a 1975 Range Rover.)
@ they have no synchro going down gears? Or it just doesn’t synchro very well?
You’re right, absolutely pointless with a synchro box. Which is every modern manual and nearly all for the last 30 years.
Oh what a feeling to drive...Toyota ! 😂
There is a larger profit in producing a 4 cylinder compared to a V8 that is what Toyota is all about. Look at different wheel tracks that they are too stingy to correct. Agree the older ones were better.
Please shorten the bolts on the gullwing @ 6:07 - sloppy job, 1-1/2 threads clear of the nut is all you need.
Sorry Andrew, but it’s a lose lose combination.
The gearbox, it is an AISIN gearbox, quite a good gearbox, but Toyota have the WORST programming on these gearbox’s. The gearbox quickly shifts from 1st gear to 2nd gear and then you need to practically come to a standstill before 1st gear is selected making 1st gear semi-useless. Then there is the inability to select 6th gear at
And the big upgrade for the troopy in 2025, swap in a v8 😮😮😮
You'll never get that pissy 2.8 to make the sound and vibration of the V8, or 1000nm and what that feels like to drive. And if the egts should ever get the better of my v8 troopy? Well I have a new spare crate motor sittin in the garage, next to the red sporty I never drive, because well, Troopy Life. 😅😅😅

Nice content, Andrew, V8 all the way, but maybe do not do that performance again, it looks like you are reporting from your death bed 🙂.
When you purchased the 8 2.8 with auto gearbox, I wrote you will be disappointed and basically what you advise in this report is that the six in line and v8 are far better. Surprise surprise. I also wrote you that for off road manual transmission are far better especially when you travel to remote places and faces a break down. What you still have to face are the problems with the 2.8 engine and especially with the auto gearbox.
Following ten years of using Toyotas I will never again buy one. Their reliability is nothing but a fairytale. They break down like every other vehicle, they need constant maintenance and they are very expensive to run.
