I agree with a lot of your ideas, you dont need every bolt on accessory available and you dont need everything permanently built in, its lighter, cheaper and more versatile. Its good to see someone going in a different direction for a change 👍
😊
😂😂
I also use a bladder like Robert does.
Spent 2 months doing central Aussie , all the tracks and the MacDonald ranges in NT.
My set up for water is 2 x 60 L bladders behind the front seats, with a small pump system from KickAss. Allows for filling from anywhere and pressure to shower , or gravity fill. So all angles covered. Splits water , shower and drinking.
When not in use , roll it up . Works for me.:)
Bladders are great due to their versatility but in my experience the water is undrinkable. I didn't try using a filter when I last had one so don't know if that can help. Cheers
How do you find the plasticky taste ??
2.8 78 12 mths 25,000 kms ( over 16,000 kms towing ). Loving it. Good honest review
Amazing how different the reviews are between Ronny and Andrew 4x4 Overlander
@@tonyf7997 Andrew is a conceited, over bearing, self opinionated tosser. The best thing I have done on UA-cam is block his channel so it no longer comes up in my feed.
*Edit, epic typo...
Glad you are pushing out the "lightweight" idea because this is what saves your vehicle and headaches.
I am a veteran in 4wd and spent many years stringing power transmission lines in the bush and learned a couple things during these years.
Simply put, use the KISS principle and you will be right.
I use a 60 litre bladder in one of rear seat footwells and just use the outflow line which has a tap and lean the pipe below the water level to fill whatever you need or to wash hands etc. Leave a small cake soap in footwell as well.
ua-cam.com/video/6K34ea28m7Y/v-deo.html
I have 3 20l bladders. But thinking of getting this
I did the same mate, worked perfectly.
Do you get any noise from water sloshing around in the cab?
@@anthonyking9284Yep, you do get a bit.
Hey mate for water storage on my 79 just a tray no canopy I brought a 60l water bladder (with the lid on the top not the side) and have that in a 55l wayco esky fits beautifully and keeps the water very cool to witch is handy obviously very easy to tie down and move around and to get the water out i carry a $20 ebay 12v fish tank pump 5 years on no issues with my setup at all love it
Interesting to see the evolution from fully equipped to minimalist set up. I reckon a rooftop solar would complete this set up
Great video showing off the simple but basic mods you can get away with. The only thing I was disappointed in was the fact that I did not see a list in the description of what was fitted to this vehicle. It would have been nice to know where the large diesel tank came from and the battery pack you are using in the rear. I may have to go through and rewatch some of your videos to track down this information. It just would have made a nice addition to have at the end.
The exhaust looks like an after thought with that crazy bend in it.
I had the same thing happen with my Pajero, originally I wanted all these things, all the cool gadgets and I realized, a lot of these things aren't even going to get me to where I want to go any easier. and the more stuff you have the more that can go wrong. recently I've torn a bunch of stuff out and I feel SOOO much better not having everything, it feels like I've just gone back to what I started with, which is just a love of getting out there and adventuring. throwing the swag in the car a box for utensils recovery gear and a fridge for some food and off I go. I feel like you can get really trapped in to wanting everything and you end up using your car twice every 6 months cause its in the shop every other day. getting upgrades or repairs.
You've done pretty much exactly what I've done in my ranger. Everything I've fitted can be pleasing removed to have the ute almost completely unloaded and use it as a ute to carry stuff and to get around town at its lowest weight and best possible aerodynamics.
I recommend water bladders. No sloshing noise, safer as soft, can hang from the bull bar at camp. Eg 2 x 20 litre Watercell X by Sea to Summit.
That 90 degrees bend design on the exhaust ...
I thought mono-tube shocks went the other way around? Nice to see someone keeping it simple! Feels like one big advertisement watching other influencers now.
If you're a big fan of the hardkorr lights. But you want red and a much more solid charging solution, no plugs.
Check out the Olight Sphere or original Obulb.
I've got an original Obulb in every vehicle I own just for the red flashing light in emergency and the white light to change a tyre or something. It also does solid red light.
The sphere is same price now and probably better
We’re hopefully getting our 76 in April, your setup is pretty much how I’ll do it except maybe 265 75 R16 mud terrains and rooftop solar. We did our last lap in 2000 in a ‘92 SWB Pajero, learned a lot from that trip, so 76 will be simple. Thanks for the vids, very helpful. Oh and likely a rear seat delete.
A neat simple build is good to see. I vote water bladder or footwell poly tank ...
Also how bloody good are they hardcore lights. Bought them for our camper and use them everywhere now ✌️
Welcome to 1995. I had a 46 Hilux style-side with a heap of boxes supporting one sheet of ply and a 60lt drum of water next to the spare at the front. I could lift the floor from any side and had a canopy I made in a day or two. Gas lighting and cooking in the left rear and jerry in the right rear. Cover was a green and silver tarp Christmas wrapped over the canopy that extended 6 or 7 foot at the back with 3 tent poles. The simple life.
Love it. Great review - thanks mate.
Weight is the enemy. I weigh and calculate stuff before I buy it. Current Troopy is about 2840kg around town and including towball weight 3300kgs loaded on a trip incl towball weight if towing. Chose lighter options for towbar(HR) and steel bullbar(TJM). Factory side steps. Rear set up is custom made from 9mm marine ply. HDPE slides for drawers. 19.5kgs 75L dual zone fridge (Kings). 400Ah Lithium with 3000W inverter - for conventional airfryer, jug, chargers and run a cord to the caravan. Used roof tracks instead of roofrack to put thin solar panels up there (never want a topheavy troopy). Parabolic springs are 46kgs lighter. Water in 2 x 25L jerries using syphon out the top and trigger gun - no pumps needed. Factory rims and tyres 29kgs each (6 years no issues) - way better fuel consumption.
Lovely Ep and setup, We have run our 1990 - 80 series like that for years, No draws as we hate them, Maybe a 50 to a 100lt water bladder that goes on the floor in front of the back seats,
yep here, water tanks… water ski boats have flexible ballast tanks in all shapes, triangle, cylinder aso. I bought the biggest, a 220 liter one, in carrying bag… Hardline FatCube 220 Flex tank 200$
not really food grade, thou, but they have 12V pumps to fill. It waits for emergencies flat as, under my single cab seat
Front Runner has a huge selection of water tanks for any space. I have a 60L in my home built trailer. No issues and good quality from a name brand. One tip, though. If you use a pump, rinse the hell out of the tank before install. There were little plastic pieces from manufacturing that got stuck in the diaphragms. Small chore for how good it is, though.
"Perfection isn't when there's nothing else to add, but when there's nothing left to take away."
The minimalist setup here is perfect.
Ronny saw the light many years ago and spent nearly 10 years trying to get weight out of Sleipnir, but ultimately it was an exercise in turd polishing. A V8 76/78/79 is always going to be very heavy, and that has implications for things like.... wheel bearing life. The 2.8 is significantly lighter but still relatively heavy compared to some rigs out there, but not bad for something on 35s. Colin Chapman (founder of Lotus Cars/Lotus F1 team) used to say "to go fast, just add lightness." I say "to go far off-road, just add lightness."
Awesome Ronnie. I love the idea of light weight, it's much nicer in fuel economy in my opinion.
Great set up Rony. For water, I would add a 67l FR tank behind the back seats. Do it in such a way that the pump is part of the tank. So when not camping you just pull the tank out with its entire plumbing.
Unfortunately the FR makes horrible slushing noises
Love your setup Ronny. Thanks for the vid 👍
May I make a Suggestion relating to the things you check for review over the time you are using the vehicle? Have you Considered getting an oil report done on engine and gear oils? It is a good way to monitor wear and internal condition and will give some more information to the usage reviews over time. A good thing with the new driveline combo in the vehicle that should easily pay for itself with the youtube rev.
Just a thought
40l front runner poly footwell tank for your water.storage work brilliantly
Fantastic assessment, love the realist/minimalist set up. Have you thought about a bladder for the water issue, either in the footwell or in the rear (maybe with rigid sides to sort the spread issue). Love the lighting solution
I used a hard tank in the rear footwell. Sits across the whole rear footwell to achieve 40L capacity. Keeps it pretty low and still comfy to sit in the back, legs only raised a bit.
Thanks, Ronnie! 😊
That 90 degrees angle bend exhaust😂
Water storage suggestion - 40L foot well water tank. Goes across the foot well in the rear.
30k already it feels like you got it yesterday!
In my 80 i have a long narrow 50l water tank that I usually put along the rear passenger foot well, perfect position for weight distribution .I can put I the back as well if I have to carry an extra passenger by folding a rear seat up.
Coming from a car shop here in Indonesia, we have this engines since 2016 albeit its the 2GD-FTV(2.4L) baby brother to the 1GD-FTV(2.8L). These engines are robust, all you need to do is use high quality Full-Synthetic oils and change them frequently at a maximum of 10K KMs, (Motul, Mobil 1 and Liquimoly to name few). Our local dealers here use their low grade TMO (Toyota Motor Oil) at every 10k kms, when using their oils its best if you change at 5k kms. I'm not too sure what oils or grades Toyota Australia uses so do your own research. If you do use TMO, typically you will have high oil consumption by 120-140k kms, I have had customers use up to 1L of oil every 2k kms. Other than that, make sure you use Transmission Oil Coolers and change the oils every 40k kms. The transmissions are quite sensitive being over or underfilled by 300MLs.
Its cheaper to change oils than to replace engines.
Love what you did to it . I’m still tossing between the altitude prado or 76 series.
What's the diesel filter you are running now, and are you happy with it..? Where did you purchase it from..? Keep the vids coming .. Thoroughly enjoy them...
light and simple is the way to go for sure Ronnie.
I've never had the chance to go 4x4 driving, but i love how you explain everything in plain language, i'd like to learn how to do the 4x4 driving thing, are there any good places where you can go to learn all these skills or at least get some familiarity with it? There seems to be quite a bit of know-how needed.
I have been using the hardcore lights for a few years now and they are the best.
Great video, love the minimalist approach. Americans use a bladder system in the rear seats so maybe you could look into that. Personally I just lodge 2 x 20L water bottles between the front and rear seats, standing upright, with a usb water pump.
Keeping it simple is always the key to success.
water bladder. removable if need be, can hold a fair bit of water and be tied against the rear seat. Otherwise there are floorpan water tanks. I'd go with the bladder though. Rolls up smaller or completely removable when empty/not required.
Keeping it simple can save weight and money. Wish could buy that Landcuriser in Canada. All we get is Landcuriser 250.
I’m not sold at all on that motor….. I’ll stick with my 79 V8 thanks, I tow a 2.7ton boat every day and zero issues
Sure mate, you must love removing half the engine to change the starter……or that piss weak 1VD V8 orrrrrr correcting the entire rear end because Toyota loves ripping you off.
Nar your right though, I’m sure that boat anchor of a V8 will be fine though
just need to carry a spare set of pistons and head for the outdated 2.8 used in the 150 Prado that left many stranded in the middle of no where
@@Andrew-hu1bx. Dunno…? Have never had to do it champ, I’ve never broken down… but if I have to I won’t be doing it, the luxury of be rich I’ll just pay my mechanic to do it or or I’ll just buy another new ute…. Zero fks are given…
Nice video, similar setup to myself. I might have to check out some of those rechargeable lights.
Love the setup😊
Talking about minimalism, I would suggest going to 265 tires and compare them to those big 315s , I’m seeing some research that they have a bigger print with lower pressure
You don't feel that you have to re-gear the differentials?
This vid is a Toyota commercial without the catchy music,
"Look what l did, you can do it too, give Toyota 90k and then spend another 12k"
Then you see it's thirsty, underpowered, drives like a pig, wants to run off in low range down tracks, can't tow, hates wind, tyres are noisy with the poor sound proofing
That's a commercial vs reality

WATER SOLUTION - 40L Boab footwell tank - Ive had one for years and works a treat!
Check out the Olight Obulbs. You can get 4 of them, magnetic charging dock and also has red light function.
I like the minimalist approach here in terms of $ and weight saved. I see the latest Troopys come in a V8 and 2.8T withe the 4 banger having more torque!
Hey Ronny , great content mate! How do you find the Off Road Animal Predator Bar? You happy with it? I’m going to put one on my Hilux GR Sport. Thanks, Alex
I like what you did with the car, definitively looks the part.
Concerning your water problem, maybe using a bladder is worth a thought? You could make a custom box for it or just take advantage of the fact that it gets smaller as you empty it...
Greetings from Germany!
i have a 40litre rear footwell water tank i use in the 76. plus dual jerry holder on the uneek rear bar. 1 diesel and 1 water for long trips. hope that helps
How does the 35 go fitting on the door? Any special brackets?
would it be possible to get magnets or something on the 270 awning to help stop water coming into the boot when the doors are open?
Cool set up ron
Another great video, I appreciate the thought you put into the build and sharing it for others to learn and get ideas from. Curious have you made any modifications to the airbox? Seems like the toyota airboxs have coped a fair bit of heat of late around dust incursions and curious if that extends to the 70 series and your thoughts on the Prado. Thank you Ronny, keep up the great work.
Ronny would you install an oil catch can? I’ve heard mixed messages as to whether they are essential or whether they in fact make the problem worse.
That toyota out drove a jeep wrangler and land rover defender on mud tires and the Toyota was on all terrains. Just shows how good at stock that vehicle is
I use a bladder inside a box that stacks with my other boxes. If it leaks or spills it stays in the box. Hose runs out a hole high on the side and siphons easily with gravity.
This is my favourite build ❤
Im wondering Ronny weather it was (2.8) manual whether you would have a similar take on the 4cyl ? is part of it the convenience of the Auto?
Is there a sill tank available?, if not maybe look and getting one made?
Is it engineered for the lift?, maybe a video on the process which is pretty strait forwards with a pre-engineered kit like that one
Loving the minimalist approach to this build 👍
I ran a 50l angled tank behind my rear seat I between the draws. I was still able to have 800mm long draws.
Grab yourself a few boxes of Marble hill spring water, simple💧 i haven't figured out permanent water yet either, so that's all i run and much prefer spring water to drink. How much does the 76 actually weigh mate, do you know? Simple is absolutely the way to go on a vehicle imo, great set up mate.
As a thought for the Water Tank, I would see if you have some room underneath the vehicle to build a custom tank. Perhaps there is just enough space to make it work on the LH side right behind the Transfer Case?
Also I would love for you to have a short video with your thoughts on all the MaxTrax Winch Recovery Gear and Rope! I cant seem to find any good reviews out there for them what so ever!
For water, there are many bladder options out there… best bit when you don’t need the water you get your space back. Maybe even an opportunity for you to make your own and sell it on the store…?
Red light is special. Switch it off and your eyes recover to see in the dark, faster than any other color. Red light is less straining to our eyes as it stimulates less of the cones. Many insects are not attracted to red light - instead, they will infest your friend's vehicle, who still believes orange light is king. Red light is good, all the other colors are nice for decoration and attracting insects.
G'day Ronny.
Just sharing with you a water idea for you.
A Roto 70ltr flat tank.
Made in Australia.
You could put it flat on the floor under your fridge, or on its side next to the fridge.
I'm sure you would probably have your own ideas.
Have you considered a 40L footwell tank? Got one in the Luxy and love it. No more jerries bouncing around.
Talking about weight, did you weigh the 76 in this setup?
Longranger tanks are doing an under chassis 40L water tank with pump. Not sure if it’s available yet.
Surely you can justify a rear bar for the protection it adds and the storage of the water. Plus takes the stress off the rear door.
Ronny, so what does it weigh loaded?
TW12SS: 42L Stainless Steel Water Tank from the Longranger
I was going to say a water bladder across the rear footwell, can get up to 100L 12:18
I have a 125L Fleximake bladder for the rear footwell of my FJ Cruiser, works perfectly 👌
Up vote😊
Exactly
Same❤
Hi, I would appreciate if you share with the 180 L diesel tank brand and where to buy it from?
Water tank idea: Talk with the folk at Kayon. See if the Prado water tank can be adapted to your vehicle. If not maybe they can 3D scan the space and design a custom stainless water tank.
Weight is the enemy of pretty much every dimension of a 4x4 and off-roading. Keep light, keep it capable, go far!
Any issues with bugs and the PPF? Have heard bugs can stain the wrap
2.8 is alright for me. It does the job and heaps of fun for me.
Those Hard korr U-lites are honestly the best $99 for 4 I've ever spent. They are 10/10.
know you’re chasing 60- 80 L water bladder Have the Fleximake 110 litres water balder that hangs off the back passenger rear seats Behind it suits my Amarok set up. Don’t have worry getting puncture in it the Fleximake are very well made they make fuel bladders too
Do you rate the power stations like Ecoflow or Bluetti? I like the idea that they are an all in one lithium with built in inverter and now come with alternator chargers. Do you think these will replace the classic dual battery setup?
I have an 80 litre bladder attached to the front of the security divider. I run a hose from it out the rear door.
Ronny,
Talking about the awning lights you mentioned not running anything through the seals.
I assume you had to run your UHF antenna through the grommet in the middle of the door/body?
Still deciding where best to install my antenna on the new truck 🤔
Hey mate he has it on one of his other videos on the 76 how he ran it. He has it on the ladder.
So what does it weigh as it stands?
Could you tell me the difference in calculated load running 35s vs standard??It’s a small engine in a large 4x4. Is it causing the exhaust to run hotter??
The drive line would be hating it,
When going down a steep track in low 1st you'd very quickly regret getting 35's without a gearbox or diff ratio correction, it feels like high 1st
A very glass half full Toyota review as always
No mention of fuel consumption with a trailer/caravan
Hi Ronnie
When you ran the Hilux with 33’s the car struggled to hold 6th gear. What’s your’76 like with the 35’s ?
Luv the simplistic ( and light) build - looking to use some if your ideas for my vehicle. I can see others in the comments have suggested looking at a water bladder in the rear seat footwell.
Cheers
i have a 100l water bladder in the rear footwell with a Milwaukee pump that I use to transfer water to my camper.
Water tank under the car? Like a fuel tank with a pump but for water?
As someone who doesn’t live in Australia and doesn’t get the opportunity to own either the 2.8 or V8 powered 70 Series, I do have a few questions …..
Are the V8 owners rushing to the dealerships to trade their 70 Series in for the ones with the 2.8?
Has the ones with the V8 increased or decreased in value?
Are there “tuning opportunities” for the 2.8?
Thanks
Hey mate, go a water bladder drifta camping do a good one with a nice protective bag for it also.
I’ve put 40k on my 200 series in under 2years, love it
So do you store all clothes, food etc on the roof when you take your family with you, or is designed just for solo?
A series of stainless exhaust tubing anywhere it will fit for solid water storage tank system.
