- Well, that was certainly something... Tonight was the NHL All-Star Skills competition. An event, unlike the All Star Game, I tend to look forward to! This year, wasn't exactly worth your time. Crosby and Ovechkin paired up for the shootout with Ovi Jr which was cool. McDavid went 4 for 4 in the accuracy shooting in under 10 seconds.. and lost. The golfing was kind of cool but overall, the broadcast was odd, the pacing was terrible cutting from one segment to the next and yeah, not the best All Star Skills I have seen thats for sure. Let's take a look in todays NHL hockey highlight video!
#nhl #allstar #skillcompetition #highlights - Спорт
What were your thoughts on this years All Star Skill competition?
Clown show for tik tok generation
A "skills competition" should showcase *skills*. I couldn't even suffer through the whole breakaway thing. It wasn't even hockey. Let the "all-star" players show just how good they are at hockey skills like skating, shooting, breakaways, etc. Then maybe have a couple other goofy events, like I remember the NFL doing dodgeball at one point (see, that was cool; it's a competition these ATHLETES will be good at).
I enjoyed the fastest skater competition, and the accuracy contest was decent. I'm of two minds about the head-to-head competition. I think they should've gone hard one way or the other. If they had started with sixteen players and made it more of a tournament (or eight and only used the qualifying times for seeding), that would be cool, but it was kinda half-cocked to only have two "elimination rounds" and to have the qualifying time be essentially meaningless.
It blew big time.
I used to enjoy it years ago, now it's just non-stop cringe, I made it like halfway through and turned it off.
Petey winning the hardest shot and McDavid going 4 for 4 were the highlights for me. Ovi Jr. was great, and I actually thought the dunk tank event was fun as well.
The tendy tandem was decent by the end of it, but at the start I was just like... watching paint dry it felt like. Svech in the fastest skater was good, but Larkin wasn't even trying (I get it since ge saw Makar fall, but that was just so lame to watch him go so slow)
The rest though was just not great at all. Like its been said, poorly paced and cringy at times. Marner's breakaway challenge was one of the worst things I've ever watched.
John Tortorella
“Oh, I don’t worry about that sh-” “The whole game, the whole weekend, I don’t even watch it. I think it’s turned into a… I’ll leave it at that. I really don’t care.”
Gotta love Torts :) He doesn't take any bullshit and says whatever the hell he wants :)
They got PK to do some in house interviewing because of his personality, but you could tell even he was struggling to make it sound exciting
He vibing the blaxploitation
Probably cuz he's the only one with an inch of personality talking to a room of cardboards
he was horrible
Dude grew out his hair so he wouldn't look so short, absolute clown
@@BoleDaPole hed beat the fuck out of you either way i think. horrible announcer though
Remember when the Skills competition actually had SOMETHING to do with hockey? Those were the days.
Those days were boring as fuck.
Eh that's the game now... Look at the nfl all pro same stuff... Its for the kids not for miserable old men who can't handle 3 hrs away from the old men game..
Ik bro the old ones were better
@@zingozingozingo the reason they were better is cuz we were younger.... Most of these kids will be saying the same thing when they get older as we are now.... Rinse repeat.... The times it was actually a real contest was when money wasn't a factor... Now and days it's jutmst a time to hang and chill for the camera
I am not afraid to watch something that is good!
Golf? RLY?? I will never watch NHL AGAIN!!
Is The NHL going to do "Equestrian"?
Granted 99.9% of NHL-ers don't ride a horse!
Well MAYBE...just maybe they will try (since Ice is made of water) Hockey Water POLO!
IMHO the NHL? Doesn't EXIST anymore!
it is like Reality T.V. it is all FAKE!
The only saving grace was Sid/Ovi and Ovi jr. That was the ONLY feel good moment!
I feel like it gets worse every year.
Last year from Vegas was terrific! This year sucked!
@@randyjackson8314 last year was mids at best
@@randyjackson8314 I think we got spoiled by a city that knows how to host an event
This is worse then last year and even last year was bad
Next year they will be driving during rush hour trying to text their favorite celly to the commentator.
It was brutal. Absolutely brutal to watch.
You deserve it for watching it
Skipped it I watched the McDavid highlights saw Skinner ace the shot and that was about it yea I’m an oilers fan but too be honest those were the big highlights mostly other then Petterson slap shot
and all the people in the NHL office and Bettman are going, "Great job as usual folks" . Let's see if we can destroy it even more next year :) Can you imagine if you PAID to see this garbage? Including the All Star game. Where they shoot the puck about as hard as a 10 year old.
When I was watching the NFL skills competition water balloon toss, I was sure it couldn't get any worse. NHL proved me wrong.
I haven't scene either, but that still sounds worse.
Yeah that sounds absolutely horrible. And did i see somewhere they were actually playing golf?
The NFL one was pretty good imo, besides the first couple of competitions
The NHL annually humiliating themselves.
I think it's healthy for great people to humiliate themselves back to earth at times
No doubt. Back and forth between each skill-comp. The fact Mcdavid goes 8/8 and under 20s total between 2 rounds and somehow isn’t the most accurate😂. Ovis one shot not even registering a velocity, and he didn’t even get another attempt for it. The breakaway challenge was worse than ever. All the gimmicks. I could go on and on. And now we have to watch a stupid divisional 3on3 tournament instead of east vs west, 60min game, like it should be.
Fire Bettman already, the guys a fucking loony that never was an athlete and all his decision making makes that very, very obvious.
@@AshtrayAnnie yes.. we watch "ALL STARS" because we want to see greatness.. great skill. Otherwise if it's just gonna be gimmicks and shit.. why even have all-stars and not just invite the funniest NHL players
@@dahlizz99 Exactly, and honestly it’s ridiculous that every team gets to have one of their players to represent them at the game too. It should be the VERY best of the best. All the top scorers on any given year. Hell, look at the Oilers, they have 4 of the top 13 scorers in the entire league right now. Yet Nugent Hopkins and Hyman aren’t there. It makes literally no sense. Or how about Stamkos and Kyle Connor both being in the top 19 for all points…yet they’re not there and players with less points are. They’ve ruined what an all star game should be. I don’t want to see players who are the top scorers on their team there if they aren’t top scorers in the league. Stop rewarding them for not upping their game.
@@AshtrayAnnie yes.. they've basically gone "doesn't matter how much you perform, you'll always be in the shadow of the faces of the league". You'll become an all-star more on name recognition and not present day performance.
The NHL is like a cable provider. They are constantly trying to appease new fans, but don't give a shit about loyal , long time fans. That skills comp is embarrassing
I felt like I was watching some crappy reality TV show instead of a hockey skills event.
Who thought giving a millionaire free chipotle was good idea in the first place lol. I get sponsors and whatever but they could've given him a jersey with a chipotle logo literally anything but giving fast food to a millionaire especially when there isn't chipotle in Montreal.
Ya a little weird but pro athletes still do eat fast food, a lot of them anyways.
"Winner gets to donate x number of dollars to its favourite charity, provided by Chipotle." There, now it makes sense and it's sweet
@@estellegrignon this is the right idea
So out of touch to give him free chipotle like .
Perfect analysis. This was rough to watch. Felt embarrassing just to watch
GET WOKE GO BROKE!
I really started feeling bad for the players (circus performers). I think if I were selected I’d fake an injury. Format has to go-
Exactly what thompson did. He wanted nothing to do with that shit. Had better plans with his family then show up to a clown festival
ESPN has to go---they were the root of the disasterous program---goofy weird announcers saying stupid stuff.
@@jonnysnipes3123 No shit? Good for him. Is he taking the game suspension or actually injured?
Why do you think Ovi skipped out for 5 years up to this point the only reason why Ovi went was because he told the League that if I can bring my kid along I'm not going and the League caved to him good on Ovi for doing so
@@jonnysnipes3123 seriously, why is this even a thing at this point. its a meaningless. clown show, just give all of the players a weekend off rather than embarass them and the whole league
Welcome to the NHL presented by ESPN.
Total suck job---as one would guess---too woke---too weird.
Hollywood meets the NHL.... sigh ... leave our game alone... Sadly its too late
Mcdavid 100% accuracy in the accuracy shooting and still loses because someone else put more shots on net in a shorter amount of time
From 6 feet closer
This all star stuff sucked this year. Actually it sucked for a while now
Last year was way better
I gave up on it the year they started using props and wearing stupid costumes
The second hand embarrassment was so painful that I had to change the channel multiple times. What a fucking disgrace. The entire marketing team should be cleaned out top to bottom.
what are women doing there for f sake.
You think it was bad watch on TV? IMAGINE BEING THERE 😵💫
I hope they payed you well to attend!
Why did they keep bouncing around so often and not stick with each full event? I thought my ESPN app was broken😂
They really lamed it up this year… and the girls coming in to add to that inclusive touch
I caught that mcdavid 4-banger that was sweet!! Glad that was the highlight!!
I’m just a couple years into following the NHL and 42. loving it more every day!
Oh I missed a lot. MCD didn’t even win the thing 🤦♂️ 😂
Thanks for catching me up 💤
I'm glad you like it. Just don't be a fan of the leafs. I'm a lifelong leafs fan and 99% of the time they let you down lol.
NHL sucks now. Watch 90’s nhl. Specifically red wings avalanche rivalry
I'm the same age and you missed out on the Gretzky & Lemieux days.
You missed all the good stuff.
The breakaway competition was supposed to be super fun with all the stick handlings. They turned it into a kid show, unbelievable.
Mcdavid lost an accuracy competition in which he didn't miss a single shot but his opponent did 😂
It's easier when you're 6 feet from the net

I believe he had his brother tossing him the pucks. That has got to help. Not making excuses, but how about Draisatl tossing those saucers to McDavid? BTW, I am a Canucks fan
@@tomlarnie2581 no it wasn't.. the video is on youtube bro jus check it out. it was Patrick Marleau
Not sure what happened, but Kaprizov was listed to compete in the fastest skater but didn't. Not sure if he had a chance, I just wanted to see the Wilds only player. That being said, the skills competition used to be the only reason to watch since the main game is always kind of boring since they don't want to get injured, understandably. Now they have completely gutted the skills comp. Snoozefest.
he didn’t wanna do it so he “dropped out”
He’s like “this shit is too ‘American corniness’ for me” lol
They need to actually invite the best players not couple players from every team lmao
@@lameloball2867 Agreed. The voting system sounds good on paper, but the best of the best don't always get picked.
The NHL already has a sinking ratings problem. They're not good at marketing for some reason. That's sad because so many of us love it.
I think the marketing problem comes down to hiring marketing people instead of hockey people who know marketing. They don't understand their product - but maybe that's a Bettman problem as well. The game is faster than it has ever been and scoring is up. These are things that are supposed to make the league more entertaining, so is the problem marketing, or is it needing a subscription service to see most of the games? I am sure ESPN paid a pretty penny for NHL broadcast rights, but is that really worth more than actually getting eyes on the game?
@@sqidvishus They markey diversify but not the diversity they already have which is all the different North American and European cultures that are represented. Instead they worry about women and minorities when most of their fans are white men. They are making the same mistake Nascar did. Tryinhg to appeal to people that hate them.

The tendy tandem felt like it was never gonna end
I normally really like the skills competition but this year I stopped watching after like an hour because I got so annoyed with the constant switching back and forth between events.
The one major highlight for me was seeing Ovi jr's goal on Lou.
Bring back the all star draft like a few years ago when captains drafted their teams. They traded Tyler Sequin for Phil Kessel.
An awkward moment for me was...well, .... *Basically every interview or the fact that the reporters had to make things seem all WOW-like, even though it was all BS.* ... But aside from that, what was most awkward for one, was the moment all the golfer players had to take a stroll down to the final green whilst getting interviewed by this short Chum-Lee looking figure who stood inbetween them, but they all had to act in a way like it was a great vibe and that they were all jolly old friends, even though the format was super cringey. And then, there was the moment where Subban had to commentate the Tkachuks coming out for Matthews little shootout skit, I just felt the cringe in all that, and Subban was just *barely* holding it together, it was hard to keep my eyes on the TV and actually watch it, because it made me feel like my eyes were burning if I decided to focus.
I just think it should continue being a strictly NHL skill competition, this was just nonsense with players outside of NHL and not following rules/including best players in the actual event. Fun for kids I guess but there's a reason why the arena was half empty.
That whole thing was brutal to watch.
It's been years since I've watched skills competitions and all-stars games, in every sport. I doesn't appear like I've missed anything.
But you watched a video about it? maybe you missed watching it after all?
"We dont have a Chipotle in Montreal" bro, we dont have one in Canada period lol
You're not missing anything
i’m honestly just at a loss for words on how absolutely terrible the all-star events were this year… there’s no point having an all-star break at all if this is gonna be the quality of it.
Im noticing this happening across all sports. The All-Star/Pro Bowls events and games themselves getting worse and worse over the years.
The whole thing was a clown show, with Subban as the ringmaster.
in my opinion they should have had the bardown team for the skills comp interviews and spittin' chiclets for the golf portions of the skills comp. give nods to the already established media presences in hockey.
My favorite part of the skills competition was the dunk tank challenge on the beach. The beach behind the targets wasn't roped off and you could see people walking by and panicking because of the pucks
The next logical step is to bring back the world cup of hockey.. as a golf tournament
This and the NFL skills were both brutal.
Next is the dunk contest lol
@@fredfrederickson yep
Only good one is mlb because it actually counts for something so players actually try
@@wolfpacberg no it doesn’t anymore
I'm glad Gordie Howe didn't see this.
At this point, my suggestion of having Team Ontario vs Team Quebec match at the all star game makes more sense than some of the trash they pulled here. The NHL needs to get back to the KISS principle.
That lady "beating" Shesterkin was a new low.
Lol he didn’t even move
The bigger issue is the NHL going woke
Exactly!!! Can’t offend those that hardly watch the game as it is.
@Channel Name Because it’s being marketed towards women idiots
@Channel Name did I say anything about women, nice try at putting words in my mouth. It’s you that think women are woke not me. How fkn typical of your generation
@Channel Name Are you normally this dumb, or are you trying to impress us? Did you know there was a professional womens hockey league in North America? probably not! Women dont really watch sports. they go to hang out with men! There are pro womens leagues that are failing because WOMEN WONT SUPPORT THEM! So why pander to groups that traditionally wont support what you do? because the government says so, and will penalize you if you dont! Thats what the WOKE movement is about! protending that the country wants what the government tells us we should want.
@Channel Name What the fuck are you talking about ?
You summarized the event to perfection... tough to watch.. good job
Come to think of it, the only recent one with the 4 divisions All star game setup I actually enjoyed was when John Scott was in because of all the freedom in the fan vote and the whole story about how he got screwed by the NHL.
Other than that year, every All Star game afterwards kept getting worse and worse.
That part with Shesterkin letting her score...
Wow. Just wow. Gotta pander.
NHL has always been a terribly run league. Add wokeness to the mixture and it's unbearable.

ya 2000's all star weekends were fun
Didn’t think it could get any worse. Congrats
Even the accuracy shot got unnatural when they put two nets on the line
the goalie tandem challenge was actually kind of cool, but I think it missed a key feature of hockey that would've made it amazing, pacing. Half the fun of hockey especially going to watch games live it the pure speed of the game, I think if they have sped up that tendie tandem challenge it would've made for some actual action and not what felt like an eternity waiting for someone just to dish a puck down the boards because who knows.
the rest of the event I think your video was an amazing summation, the golf was really fun to watch I love they went full golf channel with the broadcasters and everything, but spacing everything out like that, on top of the breakaway challenge clearly proving till be a disappointment after Pasternak threw a putter then tapped the puck in the net with another one, i couldn't be bothered to pay actual attention to the rest completely miss the entire hardest shot completion, while it was happening right Infront of my on one of my monitors. yesterday went from excited anticipation when the Marner video started playing, to disbelief, and disappointment as soon as the puck left his stick.
I thought McDavid was impressive for under 10 seconds, but Sedin made it in 7?!
Kadri was impressive to beat him from the slot smh
I haven't watched the NHL ASG since they used to draft the teams. Thanks for the hilarious recap. Looking forward to more of your vids, now that i've subbed 👍
It was the worst. Especially when they said nurse finessed Igor
Still better than that “Awesome” Sarah Nurse shootout goal. 😂🤣🤪
People going crazy about the Sarah Nurse goal, but it doesn't take a genious to see that Shesterkin was giving it his...what, 5%?
It was literally the only thing there that would grow the game tho lol
I think Luongo tried harder to stop Ovi Jr. lol
Everyone was pumped about the Sarah Nurse goal but you can tell Shisterkin didn't try to push off laterally.
Letting women win. Welcome to the new NHL. Why is she there anyways?
I don't think I ever even saw a commercial promoting this at all....the golf thing would be a cool event to watch in its own really, but what they did to the rest of it, I'm kind of glad I missed it due to not even knowing it was on.
And the crowd goes mild
So I learned some secrets from a friend who works these (hes been dling this since around 2017-18 ish. To sum up what he told me, he said basically the nhl does not do these for profit (profit is a bonus if they ever get some out of these). They do these to satisfy corporate sponsors, both in exposure of their brand(s) or companies and in them ACTUALLY being there. A majority of that crowd were higher ups and employees of companies/organizations that are partners/sponsors with the league. Another good chunk in attendance were just personnel of respective teams media departments. Various writers, analysts, hosts, etc. He said the nhl could care less about the quality of the product or the number of people in attendance when it comes to all-star games. Thats why they have been pricy and hard for regular fans to go to.
Well, i bet the coverage done by social media is better than what was on tv. They should do more behind the scenes stuff. Anyway, hard to argue with your points.
i'm willing to be more people have watched this review of the skills competition then the actual competition.
I didnt watch it. i think i watched college basketball instead (and college hockey)
Should've been a time penalty for missed shot in the accuracy competition.
The NHL is actually turning into an version of Slap Shot 2. Unfortunately…but in real life. Not sure what is worse..the movie or the NHL’s latest pandering.
I was literally saying of all this as I was watching it live. So glad someone pointed out this issue
I remember when the skills competition was about skill
Seriously... who thought this pacing was REMOTELY a good idea? I'm honestly appalled.
Agreed -- great take. A shame the shootouts have been replaced with theatrics 😞 used to be the highlight of the weekend
I didn't think it was *that* bad. I expect all star weekend to be a stupid somewhat entertaining weekend and just a mid season coffee break. I still enjoyed the hardest shot, accuracy shooting and fastest skater competitions and just turned it off when that golf thing and surf board thing was happening and would check to see when it's over. Don't care for the breakaway challenge either but Pastrnak did get a bit of a laugh out of me though
Brutaaaaaal. With Marner and Pasta acting like fools
ESPN’s NHL coverage is terrible compared to TNT
Watching the All Star game it was obvious that not one single player skating onto the ice during the intro wanted to be there lmao
. I was thinking the other day, there was a late 90s Allstar weekend where Lemieux and Jagr were both in attendance, it was that still before they started the North America vs World theme. And Jagr did a shootout on Roy where he dangled and stick handled till he was practically in the the net. It was smooth. I have never been able to find a copy of that (shout out to anyone who can find me footage!). Anyways, I kept thinking about it rest of the event and I remember the skills were a great addition, just a little something extra, but still hockey related. Now it's a complete circus and simply a cringe joke
Actually, what was worth it was watching Kadri beat McDavid in the shootout round 2! That and a skinny forward blast a 103mph slapper that made a bunch of D-men quake.
No wonder why Auston Matthews extended his injury reserve time.
I actually liked the golf part. I hope it comes back cuz it was entertaining
Said no one ever
Just give the boys a week-long, mid-season break and stop embarrassing them.
I love Patty maroon too but that was really embarrassing to watch
The whole discussion about Pietrangelo winning the Breakaway thing last year was more fun to watch than this years skill comp...
This is definetly run by some guys who think they know all the trends and secrets but are very out of touch
Wow. Just wow!!! Anybody who says this is the NHL growing the game is just flat out delusional. It seems the NHL is trying too hard to cater to casual fans to the point where it's making a mockery of themselves. And it's turning off the dedicated fans.
How the hell did this even get approved?
It used to be an honor to make the allstar team now it’s just a chance to make an ass of yourself
Looked like McDavid was pissed after he lost to kadri
bring back Al Iafrate!
In 1987 the All Star Game was replaced by Rendez-vous ‘87. NHL all stars vs. Soviet Union. Imagine. It was a true celebration of hockey. 1990 was also a great all star weekend. The first ever skills competition and in my opinion, the best. NHL are overthinking the game way too much.
gave me Caddyshack 2 level douche chills
I love the gimmicks in breakaway challenges but it was better when it was like one player who did it. Not everything has to be staged, it's annoying.
Mitch clearly didn't want to score on Lou out of respect.
The All Star game used to show off how great these players are,but now it's turned into a game show and I hate the mini games concept. I know the previous games never had much hitting but at least it was an actual game.Of course today the most important thing for the NHL is to be politically correct rather than be entertaining.
Was just talking how I used to enjoy seeing all these players do the skill competitions as a kid, Paul Kariya in fastest skater was always a favorite of mine. But now it's just a big circus. Don't know if it's always been that way but being a kid I was oblivious to it but I don't even watch anymore. Catch the highlights and call it good
It wasn't once upon a time. ass clown bettman has turned this into a circus all in the name of 'tv ratings'. Which drew its usual 2.0 share on espn as usual.
The NHL under Bettman has detoriated for years ....this event
Clearly is a waste of time for everyone.....especially the players
At least they got a free trip to Florida.
I remember really enjoying it the year they had it in St. Louis. This year, though, was just a bunch of boringness/cringe with some small sprinkles of good.
I can just picture it. One of these new fans takes their kid to see a hockey game and the kid looks up at his dad with tears streaming down his face and bawls "Where are the clowns?"
Lol. That's perfect
