- Ilya Bryzgalov, a former NHL goalie, is known for his quirky personality, philosophical musings, bizarre analogies, love for nature, memorable quotes, and unconventional sense of humor. Today he is known as one of the weirdest NHL players to play the game and he's loved for it.

Correction: Pronger did not win a Cup with Edmonton. My mistake!
He almost did lol
:(
we wish he did
ducks
I thought for sure you were trolling us lol
He's not weird; he's hilarious. Great sense of humour.
The biggest meme in NHL history but in a good way.
Idk man.. Phil the thrill is pretty legendary
It was right in that era where internet memes weren’t niche anymore and they were being posted in every office kitchen and on every Facebook page
What is weird is that everyone is to stupid to understand what he meant and how smart he is as we all run around worrying about meaningless shit. He is one of the few that truly understands everything
I agree! We as a species were simply not ready for him! We must thank the universe for such a blessing, but we are not worthy!
Everyone is too* stupid
I think it's this thing about language. Since he said those things in a second language that he wasn't on a native speaker level with, it automatically feels to native speakers like they're listening to some dumb person. Like the sentence "It's only game, why you have to be so mad?", sure "it's only game" sounds dumb. What, and I can guarantee you this without knowing any Russian, was going through his mind is "It's just a fucking game, buddy!" Imagine that with a perfect North American accent and it immediately isn't nearly as funny-sounding to people.
And also, yeah, when you see that photo on FB where it's the Milky Way and an arrow points to a small dot like "this is the Earth", there's always all kinds of likes and people are like "wow, that's so deep". He said the same thing, but again, in broken English, and it's the broken English that sounds weird to natives, and they automatically think this is some dumb dude.
@@codeP08being weird isn't a terrible thing. It's funny. It's refreshing to see someone not taking themselves so seriously.
Ilya had a personality, something other hockey players never show
Hockey players are so awkward lmao
ya hockey players went rom being cool tough humble type to just douchey and unlikeable now.. they think the reporters are their enemy and they enjoy giving the most boring media trained no real emotion answers... their are still some with a personality but most are robots
"Bad news, I'm not playing, good news, we have a chance to win" 💀
One of the best characters the game has even seen
The man had insane beef with cold cities and I respect that. He gained consciousness in Tolyatti and decided to never live in a cold place on purpose again
Yet he still signed in Edmonton lmao
@@Kjell777Iversonhe needed a job. Sometimes a sacrifice needs to be made.
Funny how a guy with a sense of humor in the hockey world is considered a “weird guy” lol I love Bryzzy hope he’s doing well these days
calling someone weird is a paradox or something. cause if you say someone's weird, or different than you, then that person would consider you to be weird cause you're different or far away from each other. but only one party calls the other weird? what's the point of saying it? the person who calls another person weird is the true weird one, cause they're both on opposite sides of some spectrum but only one is an idiot weirdo to call someone weird, cause they would both be weird to each other!! hate that LoL! if that makes sense...
I’m glad you mentioned his playing days in Anaheim and Phoenix because a lot of people really only remember his time in Philly. Bryz was a pretty solid goalie for a while, things just didn’t work out unfortunately after he went to Philly. Really hope he will start coming around again for interviews and stuff love this guy.
My guess is he really doesn't like the cold, that's why he played well in Anaheim and Arizona but his play went down playing up north
@@85blutch hes fucking russian lmao
Russian players like Bryz, Mikheyev, and Samsonov always give the most entertaining interviews. They speak what comes to mind and bring a sense of humor. A lot of Canadian players always say the same thing. "Yeah, we worked hard but we just need to put the puck in the net"
"It's all about banging bodies, you know; going deep on guys. Getting wood on it, and hopefully finding some holes...."
I've always had a soft spot for goalies, but even then Bryz has a special place in my heart. If there was any hockey player I could have a beer with and chat about anything with, he has to be it. Especially since I'm something of an astronomy geek myself.
He speaks directly from the heart with no filter. I honestly can't think of another pro athlete who does that.
Truly one of the goalies of all time
We all should be more like Ilya
We need a solar system documentary with him narrating it
Bryzgalov is a fan favorite. You can't help but love the guy.
He is just a player with a unique personality and actual sense of humour who knows there is much more to life than just hockey! unlike 99% of the other sheep on skates in the league
It’s not even just the league it’s the entire sport, filled with hockey droids all dressed alike
Every team needs a person like him to lighten the mood.
He is my role model
He’s gotta be everybody’s😂
The NHL needs more personality like him in today's game
Great video, but Proger actually LOST the in the Stanley Cup finals while he was in Edmonton, but I'm sure it was just an honest mistake.
Ah thank you for pointing that out
@@HecticHockey the alleged story behind Pronger requesting a trade was he got caught cheating on his wife with one of the employees in the coliseum. She was from California, hated it in Edmonton, and used it as an excuse to give an ultimatum to Chris that he could either stay there or go with her.
Allegedly.
Could you imagine Trevor Zegras and Bryz on the same team? Omg the antics would be endless.
Met bryz several times because he took his kid to play hockey at the rink I played at. Never talked to him extensively but he seemed like a cool guy
He didn't stop playing, he was just called up from the Earth Leagues to return to his home planet of Xyxuz Delta VI
Bryz was the quintessential meme of both "crazy goalie" and "crazy Russian".
I feel like this guy was just happy to be playing some hockey
The duck helmet was one of my favorites of all time
He lives by me in jersey and I had the pleasure to do a service at his house and he’s a very nice and down to earth guy
It really speaks to how simple the hockey crowd is that they mocked this guy.
The goalietism is strong in this man
I found Bryz to be a much needed breath of fresh air for the NHL! Its definitely something that is need for the league since it all seems to so stale and bland, interviews with players and other staff are so emotionless, and even if someone did have the Bryz Energy, they'd pretty much be chastised for it, and even one of the front office members of the Flyers commented about Bryzgalov's interviews saying "This isn't Comedy Central"..
I really miss Bryzgalov. Dude was so funny lol.
Great vid, posted to the hockey subreddit so hopefully that helps pick up some traction!
Awesome thank you!
"its only game, why you have to be mad? cmon.. hes a good guy.."
Sitting on the bench enjoying my tea is one of my favorite Bryz moments
Datsyuk over crosby
in a two-way forward discussion i see Datsyuk winning all day
My favorite thing about Bryz will always be the Sonic characters he had on his helmet.
Bryz is a straight up mythical creature
As a Bruin I can tell you with Marchand on our team we’ve seen worse😂😂😂
great video. when Bryz gets down on himself, it always hits so hard.
It's been a while, but I remember the problem in Philly was largely around the Defense... there wasn't one.
The guy is a real character. Love it.
I love Bryz. He was such a genuine guy and was so open to sharing anything.
You missed the best part of him showing his mask, he points to the team logo and said he didnt know what duck that is 😂😂😂
Whenever an NHLer starts a reply to a question with anything but "Yeah," I immediately respect them the rest of my life. Such bores.
Maybe the best personality in hockey, definitely up there.
He’s such a goofy guy, I love him.
The league needs more personality
While he's never weird in front of the camera, I do find Crosby's superstitions so extreme that I would consider him an interesting character for that. There are too many stories to tell with how routine and lowkey OCD his life is but his obsession with his birthday and birth numbers 8/7/87 is one of the big ones. It's no secret it's why his contract is $8.7 million
"It's only game. Why you heff to be med?" I've used that as my text notification a LOT over the years. :)
ahh yes, Bryzgalov, one of many I've seen come through the Coyotes Goalie Emporium(tm). "It's just a game, why you haf to be mad?" truly transcends hockey.
I'd have Bryzgalov in my team any day of the week, he was a top class goalie on a good day and hockey without occasional fuckups is boring anyway, that's what backups are for. Feel like he's one of the few players you could have a laugh with at practice or intermission. These guys are playing for money and I don't blame any of them taking it easy after cashing on a ridiculous contract, deals like that are the result of poor management and exclusively the team's fault.
"After winning a Stanley Cup with the Oilers" man that hurts.
I know! My fault 😬
Great vid, Bryz truly was a good man. My fav memory of him as an Oiler was during an oilers special event there were some kids filling the time and playing hockey. He played with them. He let them score on him and actually had fun with them on the ice. I'm sure they loved it.
@@HecticHockey Oilers fans everywhere are sobbing at that comment! LOL
How did no one get this guy on one of those celeb reality shows. His personality is so entertaining.
I still quote, "so humaingus beeg" All the time. Miss this guy.
Baseball had Spaceman Lee.
Hockey had Bryz.
He was so much fun to watch lol
Most wholesome nhl meme
He's a first ballot Hall of Fun inductee.
he was a goof and being himself, pretty cool guy
He is the goaliest of goalies
He’s a goalie’s goalie.
Nobody:
My Dad whenever I get frustrated that a bad play led to a goal in Franchise Mode on NHL 23: 0:00
Maybe he has to watch out for the bear hug.
You gotta be a little weird to be a goalie. Bryz is a legend
EA sports...
it's just a game, why you have to be mad?
He schould be the Cover Athlete every year 😂
It was too cold on Philly
It’s only game, why you have to be mad?
Classic Bryz
Behind CuJo. Ilya was my favourite player for his style of play with the Coyotes and everything else. Just a fan player.
4:46 damn I did not know the oilers won a cup in 06
I know! My mistake
He's not a weird or bad guy; he's just a goalie. They're all fucked up individuals lol
Bro looks for bears under his bed and his closet Before he falls asleep to the Russian national anthem
-10 Celsius is very warm for a Winnipeg winter
I loved him as a flyer. His personality was great, but unfortunately, his play took an unfavorable turn. I also still hate his contract. Another HUGE flyers goalie mistake. But letting bobrovsky go will always be there biggest.
Bryz!
Pronger won his cup with Anaheim. He went to the finals with Edmonton and Philly but only won with Anaheim. Just fyi.
Loved Bryz
He deserves a good life. And what makes it even better the Flyers have to pay him out😂
Pronger didn’t win the cup with Edmonton get it together
This guy belonged in a southern market 😂 he was great in warm cities and crap in colder cities!
-10 is wildly better than -20 or more, which Winnipeg is in the Winter, I get why he would feel that was worse.
I miss Bryz sooo much!!
Nothing weird about him. He had a personality and was entertaining. The NHL needs a few of these guys right now, and fewer reporters asking the same old questions night after night.
Im in love with him
There are emotes in the NHL Games with some of his most memorable quotes. That tells you how much of an impact he made in hockey culture.
Dude! How could you cut out the funniest part of the duck helmet clip?
I still love bryz
People who dont know hockey should know that goalies are weird period.
Pronger never won a cup with the oilers lol. He requested a trade out of edmonton after they got beat in the finals in 06
Legend
Such a likable dude!
The Joey Votto of hockey
Nah, he's an absolute beauty
Pronger never won a cup with the oilers. He won it the next year in Anaheim
He is eccentric. That's all. Da.
MILIB
Man, I love Ilya Bryzgalov
Brodeur is only the best if you consider things like, record, save percentage, championships, clutch play, moxy. big whoop.
I am German. I never liked Russia people, because of a personal history with my family in GDR (Eastern Germany till 1989, occupied by the Soviets since WWII). They took my grandmothers brother at the age of 15. He never returned home. Him like many other were just killed by them, showing the world they are not an ounce better, than we (Germans) used to be (in WWII)...
But he was one Russian, who stood out to me! I always had the impression, that he is a different breed from all the others. And he was the one, who gave me back hope, that there are good people all around the world! And I am thankful for that. And I will always admire him for this!!!
Bryz was one of my favorite goalies of all time. :)
Honestly Bryz seems like a great guy who was often hard on himself. Goaltending as with pitching in baseball is mostly being able to silence the noise around you and having a short memory. Get back on the horse and try again
You could probably add (American) football place kicker to that list. Once a guy loses their confidence, it's all over.
@@boltinabottle6307 And obviously football/soccer goalies. Those are arguably in a position most resembling hockey goalies.
Pronged did not win a cup in Edmonton. They lost in 7 thanks to Tommy Salo the seive
