Goddamnit, DJ. You got me. I knew it was April 1st but my distrust of Microsoft outdid my common sense.
All I could think the whole time was "No one could possibly believe that Microsoft won't fuck this up one way or another". That should've tipped me off a little sooner.
@@a2pabmb2I know, right. At just over 2 minutes DJ had not said anything critical and I twigged it was a joke before he said it was. I'm still steaming at no longer having access to the games I bought unless I agree to Microsofts new cancerous terms. That blinded me too.

The internet is a dangerous place on April 1st.
We laugh now but one day Windows will succumb to the relentless march of the Linux kernel to eat the world, MS will eventually grow tired of the extraneous and costly folly of maintaining the Windows kernel and just become the main maintainer of Proton and use it as the basis for shipping a Windows desktop Linux distribution. They will re-license the actual Windows code that goes into this distro under GNU license as after all they're all about selling support contracts to large corporations that use Windows desktop, and their primary business will be almost entirely based on Azure in some manner anyhows.

@@moshesabovich9362 Why?? It would not. These are two distinct systems that do well on their own wrt their respective philosophies. There is no need to mix everything up just for the sake of creating yet more mush.
Microsoft Linux: only $499 + including sshd and xz patches.
And tons of vulnerability and backdoors windows has built in but nobody knows because the code in not open source.
If xz was on windows, you can be sure it wouldn't be descovered until years later, and even then Microsoft would just bury it and treat it like it never happened.

I was totally skeptical, but forgot entirely about April's fool day. I was just thinking, "ok, this sounds great but what the catch that Microsoft will bring?".

Yeah I was already in paranoid conspiracy theory mode. I'm like "this is an aggressive play to appear to be more open than macOS, virtue signal, and get free development, all while having some kind of driver/license angle to get control over software/licensing/ownership somehow."

Let's be real, if it was real it would combine the user friendliness and software compatibility of linux with the security and stability of windows
windows only works because has the directx monopoly, remove that from windows, and make it open source, and almost every game developer is going to jump from windows to linux, after that is going to be time thing until every person switch to linux.

For user friendliness, i belive that xfce and specially KDE have made everything so easy, damn, even the KDE might be a little bloated but the stuff is there so the final user doesn't have to worry about a missing feature on a vanilla system AKA downloading source code and compiling it by yourself

That would really be interesting. But I won't call it a debacle. There were only a few distributions actually affected and at least Debian basically immediately released a fixed version.

Obviously, it would come with VS Code and Edge browser. And PowerShell as the default shell. Maybe the MS Office suite somehow running perfectly in Wine if you paid for it?

Microsoft is on the board of directors of The Linux Foundation, so this may happen one day.

They should have a Linux defender application created for Windows 10 users after the OS phased out for Windows update.

Good one, but I would not be surprised to see Microsoft get linux and build a windows compatible layer on top. They could take their pick of Linux operating systems and would cost them nothing only the windows layer would cost them and they would compete directly with Linux.
