- On this episode of How to Drink, I am taking a look at a Cinco de Mayo favorite, the Margarita! I’m finally taking a shot (I mean, chance) on tequila, and I’m not too sure why it has taken me this long. I love Maragaritas and Cinco de Mayo so I hope you enjoy the video and my preferred Margarita recipe. Happy Cinco de Mayo!
Margarita Ingredients:
1 oz or 30 ml Lime Juice
1 oz or 30 ml Curaçao
2 oz or 60 ml Tequila
Shake it
Serve in a Salt Rimmed Coupe
Garnish with a Lime Wheel

I've been with the channel since about 13k subs. What drew me was the production quality and the general atmosphere Greg and the gang created, on top of making cocktails far less intimidating than I had previously thought. I'm ecstatic we're now at over 130k subscribers and I know the channel will continue to grow. Greg has something special here and as someone who was new to making cocktails when I stumbled upon the channel, I now not only know what I like, but also how to make it. Thanks for the awesome content!
Thank you! I’m speechless, really!
I was gonna say I feel like this episode droned on a bit but then he stumbled across a very dark joke. I'm still laughing. Glad to see he's still got it.
im from the future and just had a painkiller based om gregs.. love the show
Jep, 1 year over, four times more subs 👍🏻
762000 subs and still growing. Slow but steady. I love this community and this channel
Best part of How To Drink being back is being able to see Greg spill more drinks in slow motion
That’s the plan man
If food porn exists, then this guy does alcohol erotica. From his pouring to rimming glass, and the drinks are so good.
HA! I love that, Alcohol Erotica!
This is honestly what a cocktail is like to me. It's a piece of art just like good food, assembled from high quality ingredients with precision. Shitty cocktails are the equivalent of Big Macs.
Derrell Kirk rimming? Schwing!
I'll rim your glass
So _that's_ why I keep watching these dispite not drinking much myself.
Okay we get it, you own a spill mat, you don't need to spill half an ounce of tequila in slow mo to demonstrate it ;)
Heh heh... yeah... that's why I'm spilling... to show off my mat.... heh...
I think the spilling just looks good on camera, in those slow-mo closeups.
@@howtodrink Don't you dare stop the spill porn on your clips!!! 🧐
Or.prob had few too many before the show
Um... haven't you heard of the bartenders special? At the end of the night, empty the spill mat into a highball glass with ice. He's probably spilling so much to make one for his producer.
"I don't go to the beach. I live an edit suite. There's no window. Only darkness."
Time to make yourself a Dark 'n' Stormy.
Hello darkness my old friend...
@@howtodrink I saw Tyler's comment and was about to type a response, but then I saw you'd already beat me to it.
After all these years, I still come back for this recipe, just like re-watching an old favourite movie for the hundredth time. The Margarita is my all time favourite cocktail, bar none, and THIS is how it must be made.
Man...as a professional bartender, I´m absolutely ok with this channel. As Kit Groeber said. It is all true. Keep it Up. You are a big inspiration for me, and drinks I make.
But when you shake, you need to have at least one finger(or even whole hand) on each side of shaker, Or it slips one time, and you will destroy all your wonderful bottles that standing in the way you shake it. And it will happen man :). Not even talking about influence you´re having. Imagine all the starting bartenders, who will see this video and then kill someone behind the bar with a flying shaker.
I've had that happen, been making cocktails for all of about 2 weeks, and when I was shaking water to clean it, the top tumbler flew off and broke a glass
@@tomkenning5482 Happens to the best of us. We all wear one cocktail at some point.
I've definitely had a few bostons pop open in my hand but as long as you're gripping both sides to them, or as you said even having a few fingers and each side of the boston, allows you to catch them. Important to note too, always face the smaller end of the boston away from the customers, because if a boston is too pop open the smaller end will be the one to fly out, and it's a lot better for it to fly off into some glassware or alcohol than a customers face.
40+ years making and drinking and I've never seen or heard of that happening. Weird experience man.
The deer is judging us
Don’t worry, I’ll never tell what he told me about you.
Thanks for the laugh!!! Love your wicked sense of humor. Cheers mate!
Yeah for not drinking Jägermeister.
The deer always knows.
So glad this is back, you can only rewatch every single season over and over so much
But I DO appreciate it!
I was worried that i wouldn’t like margaritas without any extra sugar added and was surprised that this is basically a 3 ingredient cocktail (unless salt counts as an ingredient). I actually loved it!
Papa Greg has blessed us with his flannel once again. That microphone is so crisp dorito sent a cease and desist letter. It's so good to see youre back to making picture movies buddy! Time to dust off the barware!!!
Papa bless!
Just made this with Cointreau as the curaçao, and oh my god it’s good. I feel like so many places want to mix their margs with all these bs ingredients and make it super sweet so the tequila is hidden, but this ratio really lets that respasado shine. Thanks for this one, man! I’m an editor as well btw so I feel your pain too personally.
Thank you Matt! I suspect the differences between Cointreau and the Curaçao I use are quite subtle. I’ll be doing some kind of episode on this subject later on.
"There is no window. There is only darkness." - Thanks for describing my life. Haha
Ouch
Just to prove how great a show this is and how great a guy you are, even though I am a muslim who never drinks, I love to just relax and watch your videos!! Keep up the good spirit!
Currently having one, it's good
The hotel is called Hotel Riviera at Ensenada, a city at around 64miles to the south of Tijuana, but you had it almost right! Great videos BTW!
Thank you! I know Wondrich details it in Imbibe! But I couldn’t remember the specifics.
How To Drink it’s either Bar Andaluz in el Riviera in Ensenada or Cantina Hussongs also in Ensenada. Both great places to visit.
How to Drink Season 5 - All the taste, half the calories.
Great to see ya back Greg! I really missed the show!
Because the other half spilled on the counter lol
So cool man, I love how you explain the technicalities around this drink! I also enjoyed the longer video, it's fun hearing you talking about random stuff.
I'm like that obnoxious bartender who won't shut up!
Oh dear God this was an incredible drink to make. It felt like I put sooo much alcohol into a drink, but it was so balanced. Thanks Gregg for the recipe. You should totally make a book compiling all your recipes at some point, like what Andrew did from Binging with Babish.
Thank you! Maybe when I’m around a million subscribers though...
@@howtodrink So…now you’re at 1.42M.
I'm hispanic as hell from El Paso Texas and I absolutely do not think sombreros or cinco de mayo costumes are offensive at all. I love seeing all people celebrate this holiday, whether it be cheesy or not. People that get offended are just looking for something to ruin their already shitty day... on a different note, love the recipe man! Cheers!
Hells yes!!! Been waiting ages for these. The greatest cocktail channel online!
Too kind sir!
Your slow motion, up close shots of pouring are life.
Did some experimenting and formed my own opinions:
A. When it comes to margaritas, the simpler it is, the better it is.
B. A good dry curaçao is better than triple sec.
C. Add about half a bar spoon of simple syrup to your recipe and it’s the bomb.
Dry curacao and triple sec are the same thing. "Good" is the thing that likely separates the two brands you used.
Blake Mead I thought so too. My guy at the liquor store told me they were different. He said that dry curaçao was Dutch and it would be sweeter than triple sec, which is French.
Now he could be wrong. But I noticed a huge difference. Could’ve just been the brand.
So typically I don't watch channels like this. I have nothing close to this in my youtube subscriptions, but I really like this show. Glad you're making episodes again!
Thank you for saying so and subscribing!
Great opening to season 5. I love the rambling after the drink stuff is done!
Thank you! There was a lot of convseration about how much ramble was too much ramble, glad I nailed it.
How To Drink it's better to have the rambling after too because if someone found the video/channel just to get the drink recipe they get that first which is good lest they leave due to front end rambling.
As a pro bartender here’s a tip- after salting the rim, use a skewer/tooth pick to scrape the inside of the rim after salting and then place the glass up side down on a mat to eliminate any salt inside of the glass inside the cocktail! Love the channel to death, keep killing it my friend
Dude you put this out in such perfect timing, on my way to Mexico in 1 day, 19 hours and 19 minutes 🍹🍸
Safe travels!
Don't ever change, man. This is what I come for.
Thank you!!
So happy to have this show back! Great episode.
Thank youuuuuu!
It's almost 4AM where I am and I'm tired but when I see that new video I decide sleep can wait.
That's too much!
Love this channel and I honestly can’t find anyone more enjoyable to watch. Look forward to more drinks and more fantastic slow mo shots of pours. Prost!
Thank you!!!
Love that you referenced Maturine and Aubrey. By far my favorite book series.
I love the new editing way. The slow motion, but the sound keeps playing. Welcome back!
Thank you!
Greg and Company, I can't tell you guys how great it is to have you and How To Drink back in my subscription box.
Keep it up, you beautiful people.
Thank you so much!
My liver is going to be so pissed when it hears that your show is back
Actually is called The Batlle of Puebla (5 de mayo 1862) is when the Mexican Army defeat the France army (the most powerful in that time) and the emperor was not Napoleon Bonaparte, it was Napoleon III (her nephew) and yeah... it's not a bid deal here in México. Great video. I like watching you make these awesome drinks
I really appreciate you guys setting me straight on this stuff, that was some really off the cuff banter I was up to there, I just knew “a Napoleon” was invomved
You're welcome. Once again thank you for the great videos
Also, if I recall, the victory at Puebla by itself didn't really halt the French advance at all. That all happened a few years later. Still, the fact that they got a victory pretty much on day one while being outnumbered had the symbolic effect of a rallying cry. Ironically, even back then, it was bigger in the U.S. than in Mexico because the U.S. was mired in Civil War at the same time, which meant they didn't have the resources to enforce the Monroe Doctrine (thereby giving France an easy road in)... and when the Mexicans got that victory at Puebla, Union propaganda rode that wave saying "If they can do it, we can, too!" So yeah... Cinco de Mayo was already big in the U.S. by the time Cinco de Junio rolled around the same year.
I know its merely a missed translation but referring to Napoleon III as 'her nephew' made me laugh out loud. Napoleon was transgender?
I did a margarita today, followed this recipe and boy did it turn out lovely, perfect for every summer! I really love this channel, so glad I found it! Keep it up!
Thank you!
Perfect. Me personally I like to add 3/4 oz agave nectar..That little sweetness does wonders. That's just me. Great video Greg!
Agreed. Something about that little bit of sweetness really opens up the tequila flavor.
3 oz of sweet might be too much tho, I would go with only 1 oz
I'm glad you're back! Of the many cocktail channels I'm subscribed to, you're my favourite. Layed back, but indulgent, and not authoritative or elitist. As you say: If the drink you like is in the glass, you did it right :)
Boo yah!
Welcome back Greg!! So hyped when I saw this on my feed.
Thank you!
Found this channel like, 5 hours ago, comes back from a 3 month hiatus on the same day.
Pretty nice, as you can imagine.
Welcome back Greg ! You should say we can buy gear on your website more often, I bought my shaker on amazon because I didn't know !
Thank you! There’s a limit to how much soulless shilling I’m comfortable with
You're back!! YES!!! Margaritas are one of my favorite drinks. Our family friends make margaritas (using their secret recipe), and as far as I can tell, they don't just use lime juice but also lime zest and possibly lemon juice/zest for their fruit juice. And of course, they make sure to tell me to use Reposado tequila whenever possible.
Have you ever heard of people using zest in a margarita recipe? I think Cook's Illustrated did it.
Love your work all involved! Cheers!
nice to see appreciation from my other favourite cocktail master
I love your channel!!!
You guys are have so much in common, uploading a day apart(both doing tequila) and going silent together and on top of that the best cocktail channels on yt.
You guys have helped me a lot. Been watching since before I could drink. When I first started a few months back though, I felt a deeper appreciation for cocktails than my friends and also being the more confident one to order them. Cheers!
The love is mutual! Let's get drunk some time! (responsibly of course)
Believe me if I find myself in the UK I'll be dropping you a line.
The quality and slow motion of this video. WOW!!
best ep yet...love the rambling in the end, made me smile
Thank you!
I found your channel this past fall right around the time when my son was born. I am really glad I did. Because of you, I got back into whisk(e)y's and have been exploring them by themselves as well as trying the same cocktail just swapping out the whisk(e)y. I must say, since I found your channel in the fall, and pretty much tried every recipe throughout the cold, cold winter, it is very weird for me to see a new HTD when it is nice and warm out. Great choice for a drink to start off season 5. I am glad to see you back and can't wait to see more!
Thank you Craig!
Out of all the drinks made in this session/season, when was this made (first-last-middle), and how drunk were you really at the end of filming?
Great to have you back man!
First shot of the day right here, stone cold sober.
SEASON 5!!...and you started with the one classic cocktail that tends to get my mouth watering with just the mention of it’s name.
New favorite quote, “You traitorous lime.”
Might need to make a shirt or something with that on it...
That look he makes at 3:55 when he realizes he knocked the salt off the glass 😂
You've got a sharp eye!
So excited you're back! My mother just gave me tons of vintage glassware and I am matching them with various cocktails on your channel! Feels good to have a good drink in a classy cup. Thank you!
Glassware matters! Wonderful to have options like that
Welcome back! Been looking forward to these videos!
Thank you!!!
“I needed this” is definitely a common phrase said after drinking a margarita
If they ever release a book of drink recipes or a bar set I think a lot of people would be interested, myself included.
Always a heart for the angry marines, I used to play GreyKnights and had a space wolves army back in 3rd edition. A book thing could be something I do down the road, but right now video is my main focus. I appreciate the vote of confidence though!
it's like he's making elixirs of life it looks amazing, the production is amazing.
“You traitorous lime!” funniest thing I’ve heard/seen all day ... pumped for another season!!
Thank you! I’m thinking of getting some Traitor Lime shirts made
Thank you! I’m thinking of getting some traitor line shirts made
How To Drink I was just about to comment about the shirts, do it!!
This is amazing. That ending will forever more be my response to last orders being called.
Finally! I've been drinking the same things for months like a chump!!
I appreciate your dedication to my canon!
I'm here 2 years after this video was posted and I think it's the best show I've ever accidentally found on UA-cam
I’m glad to see you’re back
Just tried this recipe with some Espanita Reposado (about half the price and with heavy oak notes) and it was amazing! I really like how it puts more emphasis on the tequila of choice instead of just being really sweet
Exactly! Thank you!
I'm so happy the show is back! Happy Cinco de Mayo and may the 4th be with you!
So glad this is back! This is my go-to channel for finding the purest form of a given cocktail - the way it should be - if you will. Best place to learn new ones!
Welcome back Greg! I gotta say I really miss you from my subscription list.
Miss me no more, I’m back!
Please make me drunk...with more content hahaha. As much as I'd love to drink with ya, my liver can only take so much good stuff xD
People! Write down todays date, as it should become a holiday. Today is the date of the great return of How To Drink!
Too damn kind, thank you!
Everyone click this: 3:17
That noise.
lol your comment is the only one he didn't like
Aeeehhhhhhyyyaa
Jer L 😂😂 wonder why
Exact noise and quote my Mrs makes after a heavy 30 seconds of love making.
@@jerl7320 lmao
I can't believe youtube did not notify me... Glad to see you back. Love your channel, love what you do, like you as a person...wish you all the best and let's have an amazing 5th season! Salute!
Cheers to another good season
Thank you!
So happy to have these back. I'm enjoying this video through the crisp view of my recently-purchased Shadetree sunglasses. Cheers, sir!
🤑🤑🤑🤑
*You Traitorous Lime* ...
Glad to have you back!
Glad to be back!!
I didn't realise how much I've missed these videos till now
Wow I'm really impressed you actually responded to almost every comment I saw.
I’m working on it!
Welcome back!
Very excited for a new season.
Thanks Scott!
And The God of Drinks is back on UA-cam 😊😊
That is praise I may not manage to live up to... but thank you!
I know this video is old now, but I now make all my margaritas like this. My family and friends that have tried it all love it as well. This is an authentic margarita. Cheers👍
I love you videos, really happy you are back.
Thank you! I appreciate it!
Super glad you gave some history about the margarita! Great to have you back Greg Cheers!
I was literally THINKING about making my own margaritas and this came up in my feed. I subbed like 5 days ago XD
Not so sure about this hotel its from but the few stories I've heard about the margarita are that it was a drink made for Ziegfeld showgirl Marjorie King who would only drink tequila so the restaurant owner added lime juice and salt. Another story is that of Margaret Sames who was an enterprising Dallas socialite in the late 40s and made the drink for all her guests at one of her house parties, going as far as to name it after herself. But most people think it was just a variation on a tequila daisy that gained popularity in Mexico and, since the Spanish word for daisy is margarita, when brought to the U.S. the name stayed.
Anyway, glad to see you're back with more history of the drinks!
I love your videos but when was the last time you made a drink without spilling any of the ingredients?
I don’t even know anymore.
Jack007 for real
Can't go wrong with a classic. Simple just plain works!
So happy to see you back! Only thing that threw me off was the sound... coming straight from an older video of yours - your video on the sidecar cocktail I believe - I realized the sound is much different... seems almost higher pitched? The previous videos seemed to have a much fuller, almost base forward, sound. Very minor critique on a great video from a very great channel! Cheers.
Every “season” has its own audio quirks since I invariably record the sound wrong, I’m still figuring this one out
Master & Commander is one of the best historic dramas ever made.
Return of the spill pour. Rock on.
Hmmmm. I think I better get better at this
I’ve watched this video about 1000 times. Your videos are amazing !
Thank you! Now, how does this affect my analytics...
How To Drink need more of these cocktails, because it’s hotter than the 7th circle here in Alabama.
The legend returns!
I’m a legend?!?
Hell yeah you are
^^
Glad you guys are back! I have one for the suggestion box: I'd love to know which bar tools and glasses you like to use/recommend. I know y'all are not pro baristas but that would actually be helpful to someone like me. I'm not looking to spend a fortune on pro-tools but at the same time, I would actually rather spend a buck or two more on something I know will work. Thanks!
I’m shooting that stuff next week
wow first episode of the season and already spilling all over the place :^)
Uh... well yes.
Another great video, Greg! You run one of the most underrated channels on UA-cam in my opinion. Keep up the good work!
That’s very nice of you to say! I just wish I was the most overrated instead...
HOW TO DRINK IS BACK! YessssSir
Damn right I’m back!!
You are very informed and create a joyful feeling with your videos. Thanks!
"There no windows, only darkness, Cheers!!"
- Greg
It's great to have you back in action! Welcome home Greg!
can we get a video on how to make caipirinha??
Also good to see you back!!!
It’s on the list to get to at some point
Just made best margarita ever. Sorry to say only had triple sec. But will keep working on it. Best margarita ever.
I don't think I've ever been more excited for a video to come out, and I'm glad you finally made the margarita. I have to agree that the sound does seem a bit different; I think your voice is louder relative to the music than in previous videos?
I keep getting comments that the music is too loud, there’s also issues with the mic
Well I think in some of your earliest videos the music was too loud, but I don't know if it was a problem after that. I don't think there's anything wrong with the volume levels in this video; it's just different
I'm not even 21 and these are some of the most enjoyable videos on this website lol
We've missed you Greg, like a cocktail misses it's glass.
See you next week. Cheers!
Thank you!
List of complex cocktails for you to make:
Screwdriver
Cuba libre
Dark 'n' stormy
Paloma
Mimosa
Shandy
Garibaldi
They're tough but I think you can squeeze them all into a video special about super tough cocktails that are only for pros.
Do more of that speaking your mind stuff you did at the end, i thoroughly enjoyed that bit.
Oh, I’ve got a good ramble in me
Welcome back! Always wanted to read the Cpt. Aubrey novels. Far Side of the World is a fantastic film.
