    I had fear to drive before. I held my driving license for years without driving until one day there was no one to drive me to work. No option I got to drive by myself and after half and a year, I can now drive calmly. Thank god. 😌

    Most of my fears honestly come from a lack of practice... which I can't do because no one's ever available to watch over my driving. As a result, I end up driving once every month. I've always said to myself that the day I get my license is when I'll finally be able to practice. I just need to pass my second attempt.

      I find that being a passenger to a good driver, who constantly scolds at other drivers somewhat helpful for my self-development. For example he'd say:
      "Look at that driver pressing his brakes for no reason! This is what causes jams"
      "Why is this driver jamming his brakes??"
      "Omg cut into my lane without matching my speed?!" *flash*
      "Sigh unnecessary braking on a corner. Should brake BEFORE the corner, not during"
      "Eating two lanes? I bet this guy is either drunk or on the handphone"
      This makes me more self-aware of my driving.

    "Those things you're afraid of will most likely never happen."
    I have to say that that is very true. If anything, fear itself will actually cause them because it really blinds you and fogs your mind regarding everything important while behind the wheel. Thank you so much for this!

      I love your comment, which got me thinking all week long. I thought to myself your negative thoughts are not true, but if you let fear dominate with the negative thought, people may have a hard time coping in life. Therefore, a balance of some fear and confidence, may make a difference with driving phobias. Thanks for stimulating my brain. God Bless.

    • @slavesteven3049
      @slavesteven3049 3 роки тому +4

      Phobias are developed two ways.
      One is through experience. If you get into a bad accident you could develop a fear because of it. In this case the thing you fear has already happened.
      The other way is through avoidance. In this case you fear something because you don't have experience with it and you imagine things happening in your head that have never happened before.

    I used to be intimidated by driving, but my confidence and driving ability definitely improved after repeated exposure (helps to be driving alone without someone else in the car critiquing my decisions). One of my main problems is getting pressured by people behind me which causes me to divert attention backwards instead of forwards, but it helps to not look at the rearview mirror too much, and usually the person behind doesn't pose any actual threat such as rear-ending. On a side note, you're an absolute legend, still responding to comments and reassuring people years later.

Now I realize, no, I know how to drive, I'm very good at it, but I feel pressured when someone is with me and it also divides my attention. I need to practice by myself. I will feel the least pressured. I also enjoy shopping by myself because I won't feel rushed by the other person. This should have given me a clue, haha.

    I get anxiety when I drive so I use listening to the radio as a way to calm me down. As a nervous and less experienced driver, my dad say that it's not good but when I don't have music on I get overwhelmed with fear: heart palpitations, shaking hands, excessive bad thoughts, and etc...

      I noticed with some of my students that when we were talking, having a conversation about something, they were driving way better than when we weren't. I guess that's because they were focusing on the conversation instead of being focused on their fears. Sort of like driving on auto-pilot. When we'd stop talking, they'd start driving terribly. So what you say makes a lot of sense. Anything that can take your focus away from your fears is a good thing.

I'm now an adult and it wasn't until recently that I really got any time behind the wheel with an instructor, and I was terrified. I'm not really scared of other cars anymore because I understand driving can be safe and it just has a risk because cars can hit eachother, but as long as you follow the rules and look out for other drivers you will get better. Stay safe and pay attention, stay away from crazy drivers if you spot one and do your best :) Nothing will happen and you'll become natural at driving with no fear! i have a huge fear of driving. i am a slow learner when it comes to it as so much of it is based on experience and judgement. i lack a lot of confidence to control my vehicle too, especially when going at higher speeds or when there's a lot of traffic. i also am scared of being in the way of other drivers or making mistakes on the road. ive seen many times where other experienced drivers aren't as understanding with new drivers, especially when we're trying things for the first time. i get very tense, and have a hard time focusing on so many things at once.

    See I agree with the whole “don’t be afraid of failure thing.” However, if you fail while driving, there’s a chance you can die or injure someone else. That’s why driving scares me.

    • @ConduiteFacile
      @ConduiteFacile  3 роки тому +20

      What I mean is that potential failures have to be calculated. Just like everything else in life.
      If you're learning how to dive for the olympics, start diving from 5 metres. If you don't enter the water at what is considered a good angle for the judges, you've failed. But you'll live.
      But if you start from 100 meters, and you don't enter the water at what is considered a good angle, you can die.
      So when I say don't be afraid to fail when learning how to drive, what I mean is something like: Don't be afraid to change lanes in a safe manner, but if you don't succeed, some other driver might honk at you, and/or your driving teacher/accompanying driver might grab the steering wheel. As opposed to: Just change lanes mindlessly on the highway at 100 km/h.

    • @samuel.wilson
      @samuel.wilson 7 років тому +45

      Smoothness comes with practice. You develop a feel for it and then it comes naturally. You need to spend more time with your car and try to keep anxiety levels low.

    • @AWS137
      @AWS137 7 років тому +18

      Is your seat too close to the pedal? I find that if my legs are too close to the pedal I tend to press the pedal a bit too hard.
      Or are you driving a manual car? Are you shifting up your gears late (high rev)? When you're on a low gear and force your car to go fast, then release the pedal, the car will jerk.
      Alternatively, try turning off your radio and hearing your car when you press the pedal very lightly.

    • @gtasandman

      ive only started driving but i realized that if you want to have a smooth acceleration from a stopped position; let your vehicle roll a little bit (no gas, no brake), and then lightly begin to apply the gas pedal.

    • @Se7vnthParadise
      @Se7vnthParadise 6 років тому +4

      Abdi Jama you jerk it because you think the pedals are nitro boost or something. It happens, then you’ll get a feel for it, rest your feet and put constant pressure and when you wanna slow down a bit don’t just remove your feet, you slowly do that too. Most people are more worried about their brakes tbh. For me it was staying centered on the lane( more or less) but i got used staring at the line so I don’t change lanes or I don’t hit the curb

    • @maxp918
      @maxp918 4 роки тому +1

      1. Find some parking instructions and remember the algorithm.
      2. Try to find a safe place - e.g. empty car lot, testing ground, a wide street with no traffic - whatever your local law permits.
      3.Get some objects to outline a parking space - such as cones, large water bottles, chairs, etc.
      4. Start by placing the objects to create a large space to park between and do it many times. Once you feel 100% confident, narrow down the space and go on until it gets very tiny. Just remember to have fun, that's why you put the efforts to create a safe environment.
      5. Also, to get confident to car dimensions from your view angle, whenever you feel too close, secure the car in place, go out of the car and have a look.
      6. If the parking algorithm doesn't feel right for you, try another one.
      7. Whenever you feel anxious parking in real life, ask a friend or even a stranger who doesn't look too busy to get near the parking space and give you hand signs while you park. There's no shame in that.
      Good luck!

      I feel you Ashley!! I'm able to overcome my fear with all the other aspects of driving, but I'm still struggling with parking especially those u mentioned! It's worse when someone is behind me waiting to pass, I'll be stressed out that I'd give up the spot to look for somewhere easier...it's all about having the confidence and practice, practice, practice!

    Thank you for this video! I can use this as a reference point because I don't get a lot of repitition in driving (I only go out driving once a week or not at all, yet my younger brother goes out driving daily). With that lack of repitition comes a lack of skill and an increase in anxiety levels. One takeaway here is that you have to do something as often as needed to combat your anxiety levels and nail the learning curve down regardless of what you're dealing with on the road. This is useful to build my repitition up in driving!

    Can you please make a video on making left and right turns in motion? That's my main trouble when I'm driving. When I know I have to make a right or a left turn that is ongoing I start to feel panic and no matter how much I'm slowing down, as I approach the turn I get this ugly feeling in my stomach like the car is going to tip. I can't tell if it's a real feeling because I'm turning wrong or if it's my imagination. I just would like to know how to make smooth right and left turns. I drive an SUV by the way. Thank you! Love your videos :)

      @meh8650 7 років тому +12

      Long post incoming ^^;
      Here are some general tips that I know of:
      1. Make sure your car's ESP is on (some cars call it ESC, but whatever your car calls it it's Electronic Stability Programme renamed several times). If your ESP is off, you will find that when taking corners fast (40 km/h is pretty fast btw) causes the car to lean a bit excessively on the side (right turn -> right side of car, vice versa)
      2. You might need some new tyres (or at least give them a good check). These shouldn't affect how your car's ESP works though... but if they're truly bad, you will hear screeching even when taking a roundabout at a reasonable speed - generally 30km/h or less.
      3. Take corners slowly, especially in a tall car. This especially applies to vans and trucks (driving a van in my first few hours of driving was a nightmare tbh lol, but hey... faced the fear and now I love it) but it can affect some SUVs as well.
      4. Less mechanically related, go to some dodgy construction place where basically no cars drive around and practice them turns... or even just do 3 loops around each roundabout of your favourite local place that has a million of those. As Conduite Facile said, you need to face your fears - trust me, it really works.
      A lot of this kind of stuff really comes with experience. Tbh I started driving 2 months ago, and it took a month and a half of continuous, hard driving (not 24/7 lol but i hope you get what I mean xD) to get rid of my general fear of driving. As you get to know what your car likes and what feels extremely dangerous - like driving a van whilst taking a roundabout at 60km/h (which I have actually done lol) - your fear naturally goes away, because you're expecting something and you'll have a high chance of getting what you thought was coming. You naturally fear what you don't know, but you push all the boundaries, get all the theory knocked over and test what you can... and, there the fear goes with the sunset.
      actually I've also driven 3 cars - a van, SUV and sedan. The sedan's ABS and ESP stopped working before I started driving, the van has no ABS and the SUV's got a dodgy diesel engine. Trust me, it's 100% possible to live without ABS and ESP... it's just less comfortable, but the comfort and skill factor's all up to you - the driver. You just need to keep fighting your fears! :D
      Psychological stuff isn't easy to fight, and I get that 100%. It's absolutely crucial to remember that stuff takes time. No one gets in a car and starts driving super smooth unless they're super skilled.
      EDIT: Keep in mind that when you're panicking or extremely nervous, your passengers will feel it in what you do, such as over-correcting your steering or just "being afraid of the brakes", I call it. When you panic, try your best to calm down - tell the car that you control it. Don't let the car control you, because that's when accidents really happen.

    Thank you very much! I'm so glad I came into this video, tbh I am scared of driving again. Well here's my story I started my driving lesson last year around April 2016, gained my confidence on the road but I don't have my own car so I don't drive on a regular basis, wasn't able to get my license right away because of complicated paperworks. Got my license around September. Forgot to mention I was pregnant that time then I gave birth October, the Doctor advised me not to drive for 6weeks then December came and I tried driving but I got into an accident. Glad nobody was hurt. That builds up my fear. Up to now I am considering enrolling in a behind the wheel class for another 2 hours maybe 4 hours just to get the hang of it and gain my confidence again.

    This video encouraged me to face my driving fears. I've been trying to drive for years now with no success because I will practice one time and then give up for months, and do it all over again. It's a vicious cycle. But lately, I've finally been driving more in the streets and it's gotten easier and easier. So far it's only been mainly residential, but I think this weekend I will practice on my first more transited areas with intersections. I'm nervous but I know I can do it.

      My dear friend can relate. He knows how to drive in his mind with the vision, but once it is time to really drive, he freezes. Please look it as buying a car as you having the potential to drive. You are probably afraid of the smallest details in making mistakes by doing everything right. You may want everything perfect, which is understandable. It is mind over matter. God Bless.
