Greg LeMond really was (and is) a class act. All of 'murica should respect and honor his accomplishments and the difficult circumstances under which he did it.
He just got overshadowed by Armstrong.....and as Armstrong's story grew....LeMond became less of a narrative....but regardless, LeMond paid his dews and then some....and deserves to be remembered for his incredible talents....and that is why at www.imasportsphile.com we have posted this vintage video along with 2500 others from the same era....cuz these athletes deserve to be remembered in a world that is too soon to forget.
Very well put. The kids of today have been brought up to believe they themselves are born heroes by their helicopter parents. They have no idea of what it is to forge themselves into great champions of any kind. I applaud your efforts and I hope that LeMond will again rise in prominence. It's not really fair to compare Lance and Greg. Lance appears as a superman, but is ruthless and somewhat false. Greg is more like Superman as originally created, embodying the best of the American spirit and the qualities that made America strong and noble.

Phil Liggett IS the English-speaking voice of The Tour. Listening to him while watching LeMond ride brings back fond memories of the 80's race. Add Bob Roll riding for Team 7-11, and the result is priceless. Thank you for posting. I enjoyed every minute.
I remember watching this live on TV I was 10yrs old, man they knew how to produce a show back then. If they only had the camera technology we have nowadays. I miss the half hour - hour daily segments.

I met Greg the year before at his training camp. I went to this race and was there right at the end after right he got off his bike and he was being brought through the crowd. He was washed and looked in shock. He saw me for a second and had a look on his face like, 'I seen you before. what are you doing here?'. Exciting day.

John Tesh, the commentator, wrote and played the music which I treasure in my music collection. I like Jazz and most music influences. John is an influence in history and a fine musician. Hinault and Fignon and LeMond were major players in Cycling History.

...and weird as well Lemond was so over Hinault The war is now on, that's official 2:06:12. It was a rebellion. + they were very different people didn't really like each other when it came to the crunch French and Americans are very different. Different culture, different mentality 2:14:22. Lemond knew this 2:21:17. + add to the mix a guy who it has been said is France's Lee Iacocca who then becomes cycling's George Steinbrenner master of the bike racing universe and you've got a pretty weird mix of people 2:20:34. No wonder there was tension 2:52:59.
It helps if you work in the quasi-socialist countries in Europe (most of them). They all get 4 to 6 weeks of vacation every year. Most take several weeks in summer and go on "Holiday" as they call it. It's a different system in Europe. The people don't work very hard and they really don't care if they give good service or not to the general public. They get paid regardless, and it's tough to fire people over there.

The 1985 broadcast is probably the best. We get Phil Anderson and so forth. 1987 was also awesome. 1986 was 'great' too but the network coverage was a little weak. They were a little too anxious to see Lemond 'getting revenge' for 1985.
Of course he was! I’m European but I must say that Greg Lemond was much stronger than Hinault in 1985 and 1986. He won in 1986 even tough most of his team was working against him. He’s one of the best cyclist of all time. And he was a really great guy!
Hess Alain yes if LeMond didn't get stabbed in the back in 85 and then shot in the back in 87 he could have won six, maybe maybe maybe 7 but his 3x are very very real and damn impressive
The drop out rate for this rate is what I would expect, ~40%. It's amazing how strong these riders are. I participated in a 200 mile race when I was a kid. 100 miles per day on relatively flat ground even. I got sooo tired during the last 40 miles of it. I just really didn't have anything left in the tank. It's amazing they can ride like that.

LeMound gave us the greats 2 tours of all time 1986's epic battle with Hinault and Fignon in 1989 . With his accident in 87 we will never Know how things could have been in 87 when Roche won or Delgado. Or what may have been if Fignon had not had that horrific injury in 85. But it was his former Team mates that gave us two of the greats TDF's in History, and I think LeMound was a clean rider at a time when true talent could still win a Tour unlike everything that followed from the 90's forwards.

Whoever owns the copyrights on some of these early 'Lemond' Tours really should remaster them and sell them online. They'd make a fortune. The 240 scan line standard is horrible and it seems like the recording is filtered through a VHS tape and a bad analog broadcast tuner.
The network that produced the televised event owns the copyrights....so monetizing our web page at ImaSportsphile is not in the question....and our entire 2300 hours of content library was originally recorded on Sony Betamax.....so, enjoy our site....it doesn't cost a dime....even though it took 6 yrs to transfer from cassette to digital and 2 yrs to post the 2300 videos currently posted....so, we still have 5 or so years worth of posting still to do....and that is why you should bookmark our page....for the reproduction is GREAT for when and how it was recorded....and MAS o MINUS for the operator of the Betamax machines at the point of recording.
PS.....you obviously know a lot about "scan lines" and "recording filters"....so, I'd like to pick your brain about presentation of our library in it's best form....and trimming and producing our own videos from our library content.
Basically, what you need to do is test your transfer system and test codecs for the analog to digital conversion. Find one video section that your team likes and run QA and view feedback testing. Once you develop a standard you then port all of your masters through that standard protocol. The hardware can be a problem but so can the codecs that you use in the middle. You don't have to spend a fortune to get good results, you just have to figure out where the weak links are. Get the quality first and then worry about size. Once the quality is satisfactory it should not be difficult to get the sizes down. So I'd suggest optimizing video quality based on viewer (even your own internal viewers) first and then once you have that down you can make sure your compression schemes preserve that level because today this is not difficult to create efficient files from high quality video. Do the transfer in stages and (as i said, get the quality optimized first, not worrying about file size at that stage, and then test for file optimization protocols/codecs once you have a quality target to maintain). Screen the tapes through a good Betamax system so that you know what to expect. Then do a "max quality" transfer on your analog to digital machines to see what the capability is there. If that looks good then you need to look around for better file optimization codecs. Dividing the quality check process will help you identify weak links in the production chain between your source tapes and how they play on UA-cam. It's possible that the original tapes are deteriorating and then cleaning up would be very expensive. But it's also possible that your production chain has a weak area that can be tuned or replaced for free or low cost. I haven't done an analog to digital transfer in many years so I don't know what hardware to suggest. But first do some critical testing to see if you can identify weak stages. I could be jaded at this point but it looks like your transfer might be feeding an RF/analog TV tuner. That would definitely be a weak link as it would probably be running about 240 scan lines even if your hardware is set to capture 480P. If you have the original Betamax (or even a professionally made "final production cut") you should be able to get something that looks like the original 480P DVD standard if you have no problems with the tapes.
Back in those times only a few had access to high end bikes, cycling coaches and doctors specifically for cyclists. In 2019 I am seeing independents winning local events because everyone has access to everything now and the field is leveling out, the advantages of the past are gone.
1985’s TDF was also Lemond’s to win but was held back to assist the fading star Hinault. And then Hinault tried to stab LeMond in the back in 1986. Oh but Victory....the sweetest revenge!!!

I read "Slaying the Badger" years ago and have seen videos from this race so many times. I've always been on Greg Lemonds side, but I'm beginning to change my mind these days. I've been listening to Lemond being a victim for years now in every regard. I so, so agree with him in his battle against Armstrong and so on, and I also agree with the fact that Hinault sort of promised to help him in 1986. BUT... at this point I just look back at Lemond complaining and complaining all the time. It has just become enough by now. Everybody is against him all the time. It's like he demands that no one tries to battle him in 86. Hell, you have to be the best to win the biggest race. How can yu demand, that the second best rider holds back? It's just wining. Just go out there and beat him, if you are the superior one. He also cried his eyes out about losing in 92. Hell, half the peloton was better at that point. He was sitting in the back eventhough those guys weren't racing faster than they had in 1986. It was you losing the edge, not the others all of a sudden going faster. Stop complaining and crying about it. It just build up over time. Go out and beat Hinault instead of you and your wife crying endlessly about not having the victory giftrapped from the beginning till the end!

Someone knows where I can find the music? I have looked up "John Tesh Tour" in UA-cam but there is no much. I WANT ALL THE TUNES. It's a pity that the audio is too loud and the quality is too low because the music is very good and cathy and fits well the docu. I hope someone an help me finding the music.

When Greg made the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1989 many "sportswriters" showed their ignorance by ridiculing Greg, saying that riding a bike is not the mark of an athlete.
After posting some 2300 vintage videos on our web page at Imasportsphile....we would have to respond to those "sportswriters" by saying...."and that is why you are a sportswriter and not a world class athlete".....cuz every potential Sportsphile that we know that being a world class cyclist requires athletic acumen of the highest level....and the Tour du France is one of the most gruelling and demanding sporting events known to the world of sports.

Why is the lips on Andy Hampsten so big and thick 17:14 compared to later pictures in his career? Especially the upper lip? I tried to google different pictures of him, and his upper lip seems much smaller years later. Why? Human growth hormone was coming into sports in the early 1980 and could improve athletic performance, burn fat and improve stamina. Their was drug test for HGM back then. HGM had one side effect in the feets, head and lips getting bigger and thicker. Just look at Jan Ullrich in the time trail TDF 2003. Perhaps there is another explanation to Andy Hampsten´s bigger lips?

i was interested in a bike race, not a john tesh concert. like when i go to a jazz concert i don't like it when they lower the music volume so they can narrate a bicycle race over it.

I was 24 in '86. Now I look at those riders thinking that I might have been one of them, if I only had kicked in the ass my girlfriend of the time... I was too young to think that the world has always been full of women. What a big mistake I did: "Whaaat? You love bike more than me? Uh, image what a fun it'll give you in bed!" How naive I was! I didn't get along with her too long and I also lost what I loved the most at that age: cycling. Am I allowed dreaming? God only knows for sure, but I could have been a new Merckx. (Axel, I mean, not Eddy!!!)
Let us be real Phil was usurpped by Tesh. He will never be as good as Phil. Phil has been calling the race since 1972. And the music is ameeicanized and over cooked. Imo as a pro musician. Overcooked keybpards are never a good thing 😂

Thank you so much for posting. This got me into the sport and is still my fav . I have the audio recorded on cassettes I used to put in my Sony Walkman and ride to as a kid.
I met Greg the year before at his training camp. I went to this race and was there right at the end after right he got off his bike and he was being brought through the crowd. He was washed and looked in shock. He saw me for a second and had a look on his face like, 'I seen you before. what are you doing here?'. Exciting day.

John Tesh, the commentator, wrote and played the music which I treasure in my music collection. I like Jazz and most music influences. John is an influence in history and a fine musician. Hinault and Fignon and LeMond were major players in Cycling History.

It helps if you work in the quasi-socialist countries in Europe (most of them). They all get 4 to 6 weeks of vacation every year. Most take several weeks in summer and go on "Holiday" as they call it. It's a different system in Europe. The people don't work very hard and they really don't care if they give good service or not to the general public. They get paid regardless, and it's tough to fire people over there.

The 1985 broadcast is probably the best. We get Phil Anderson and so forth. 1987 was also awesome. 1986 was 'great' too but the network coverage was a little weak. They were a little too anxious to see Lemond 'getting revenge' for 1985.

Of course he was! I’m European but I must say that Greg Lemond was much stronger than Hinault in 1985 and 1986. He won in 1986 even tough most of his team was working against him. He’s one of the best cyclist of all time. And he was a really great guy!
Hess Alain yes if LeMond didn't get stabbed in the back in 85 and then shot in the back in 87 he could have won six, maybe maybe maybe 7 but his 3x are very very real and damn impressive
The drop out rate for this rate is what I would expect, ~40%. It's amazing how strong these riders are. I participated in a 200 mile race when I was a kid. 100 miles per day on relatively flat ground even. I got sooo tired during the last 40 miles of it. I just really didn't have anything left in the tank. It's amazing they can ride like that.

LeMound gave us the greats 2 tours of all time 1986's epic battle with Hinault and Fignon in 1989 . With his accident in 87 we will never Know how things could have been in 87 when Roche won or Delgado. Or what may have been if Fignon had not had that horrific injury in 85. But it was his former Team mates that gave us two of the greats TDF's in History, and I think LeMound was a clean rider at a time when true talent could still win a Tour unlike everything that followed from the 90's forwards.

Whoever owns the copyrights on some of these early 'Lemond' Tours really should remaster them and sell them online. They'd make a fortune. The 240 scan line standard is horrible and it seems like the recording is filtered through a VHS tape and a bad analog broadcast tuner.
The network that produced the televised event owns the copyrights....so monetizing our web page at ImaSportsphile is not in the question....and our entire 2300 hours of content library was originally recorded on Sony Betamax.....so, enjoy our site....it doesn't cost a dime....even though it took 6 yrs to transfer from cassette to digital and 2 yrs to post the 2300 videos currently posted....so, we still have 5 or so years worth of posting still to do....and that is why you should bookmark our page....for the reproduction is GREAT for when and how it was recorded....and MAS o MINUS for the operator of the Betamax machines at the point of recording.
PS.....you obviously know a lot about "scan lines" and "recording filters"....so, I'd like to pick your brain about presentation of our library in it's best form....and trimming and producing our own videos from our library content.
Basically, what you need to do is test your transfer system and test codecs for the analog to digital conversion. Find one video section that your team likes and run QA and view feedback testing. Once you develop a standard you then port all of your masters through that standard protocol. The hardware can be a problem but so can the codecs that you use in the middle. You don't have to spend a fortune to get good results, you just have to figure out where the weak links are. Get the quality first and then worry about size. Once the quality is satisfactory it should not be difficult to get the sizes down.
So I'd suggest optimizing video quality based on viewer (even your own internal viewers) first and then once you have that down you can make sure your compression schemes preserve that level because today this is not difficult to create efficient files from high quality video. Do the transfer in stages and (as i said, get the quality optimized first, not worrying about file size at that stage, and then test for file optimization protocols/codecs once you have a quality target to maintain).
Screen the tapes through a good Betamax system so that you know what to expect. Then do a "max quality" transfer on your analog to digital machines to see what the capability is there. If that looks good then you need to look around for better file optimization codecs. Dividing the quality check process will help you identify weak links in the production chain between your source tapes and how they play on UA-cam. It's possible that the original tapes are deteriorating and then cleaning up would be very expensive. But it's also possible that your production chain has a weak area that can be tuned or replaced for free or low cost. I haven't done an analog to digital transfer in many years so I don't know what hardware to suggest. But first do some critical testing to see if you can identify weak stages.
I could be jaded at this point but it looks like your transfer might be feeding an RF/analog TV tuner. That would definitely be a weak link as it would probably be running about 240 scan lines even if your hardware is set to capture 480P. If you have the original Betamax (or even a professionally made "final production cut") you should be able to get something that looks like the original 480P DVD standard if you have no problems with the tapes.

Back in those times only a few had access to high end bikes, cycling coaches and doctors specifically for cyclists. In 2019 I am seeing independents winning local events because everyone has access to everything now and the field is leveling out, the advantages of the past are gone.

I read "Slaying the Badger" years ago and have seen videos from this race so many times. I've always been on Greg Lemonds side, but I'm beginning to change my mind these days. I've been listening to Lemond being a victim for years now in every regard. I so, so agree with him in his battle against Armstrong and so on, and I also agree with the fact that Hinault sort of promised to help him in 1986.
BUT... at this point I just look back at Lemond complaining and complaining all the time. It has just become enough by now. Everybody is against him all the time. It's like he demands that no one tries to battle him in 86. Hell, you have to be the best to win the biggest race. How can yu demand, that the second best rider holds back? It's just wining. Just go out there and beat him, if you are the superior one.
He also cried his eyes out about losing in 92. Hell, half the peloton was better at that point. He was sitting in the back eventhough those guys weren't racing faster than they had in 1986. It was you losing the edge, not the others all of a sudden going faster. Stop complaining and crying about it.
It just build up over time. Go out and beat Hinault instead of you and your wife crying endlessly about not having the victory giftrapped from the beginning till the end!

Hinault looks a lot heavier than Lemond, so watts per kg Lemond was probably a lot better. Once they hit the hills that really matters.

It's a pity that the audio is too loud and the quality is too low because the music is very good and cathy and fits well the docu. I hope someone an help me finding the music.

When Greg made the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1989 many "sportswriters" showed their ignorance by ridiculing Greg, saying that riding a bike is not the mark of an athlete.
After posting some 2300 vintage videos on our web page at Imasportsphile....we would have to respond to those "sportswriters" by saying...."and that is why you are a sportswriter and not a world class athlete".....cuz every potential Sportsphile that we know that being a world class cyclist requires athletic acumen of the highest level....and the Tour du France is one of the most gruelling and demanding sporting events known to the world of sports.

Why is the lips on Andy Hampsten so big and thick 17:14 compared to later pictures in his career? Especially the upper lip? I tried to google different pictures of him, and his upper lip seems much smaller years later. Why? Human growth hormone was coming into sports in the early 1980 and could improve athletic performance, burn fat and improve stamina. Their was drug test for HGM back then. HGM had one side effect in the feets, head and lips getting bigger and thicker. Just look at Jan Ullrich in the time trail TDF 2003. Perhaps there is another explanation to Andy Hampsten´s bigger lips?
What becomes even more rewarding for me being only the 2nd accredited Sportsphile....who is responsible for posting this video along with 2300 more currently posted on our site.....are the comments that come to from knowledgeable fans....which add value to our knowledge base as a Sportsphile.... as you are obviously a cyclist....and a person who loves the sport.....so, I have a question for you....such as, why is the largest drug culture (legal and illegal) society in the world (by a long shot)....a culture with a driven love of sports who wants to see their athletes run faster, jump higher, hit harder, et al.... surprised when their athletes use drugs to accomplish and meet those demands!?! i was interested in a bike race, not a john tesh concert. like when i go to a jazz concert i don't like it when they lower the music volume so they can narrate a bicycle race over it.

I was 24 in '86. Now I look at those riders thinking that I might have been one of them, if I only had kicked in the ass my girlfriend of the time... I was too young to think that the world has always been full of women. What a big mistake I did: "Whaaat? You love bike more than me? Uh, image what a fun it'll give you in bed!" How naive I was! I didn't get along with her too long and I also lost what I loved the most at that age: cycling. Am I allowed dreaming? God only knows for sure, but I could have been a new Merckx. (Axel, I mean, not Eddy!!!)
Let us be real Phil was usurpped by Tesh. He will never be as good as Phil. Phil has been calling the race since 1972. And the music is ameeicanized and over cooked. Imo as a pro musician. Overcooked keybpards are never a good thing 😂

Great coverage and, documentary on the tour... but kill that music please!
American coverage is just dreadful. More annoying adverts and irrelevant crap than actual riding. The constant whining of Lemond was a distraction also.
I hate that John Tesh techno/New Age synthesized garbage muzak, probably even more than I hated 80s American TV coverage of the Tour...which was equally crappy.
God, I know! I would watch the european feed of the tour and it was just straight sports coverage, but all this pseudo melodrama in the American coverage was pathetic.
Shocking American coverage, more repetitive drivel and adverts than wheel to wheel action.
The music makes it unwatchable.
If you watched it in the 80’s you wouldn’t think that. I can see if you just stumble on it now why you would. But for people who watched it then we appreciate it for what it is.
