    This video is after the power switches were installed. It used to be all hand throw at Inman except the class yard.. On the south end its controlled by the main tower once controlled by the old retarter tower which I worked at times before they shut it down around 2010 or 2009

    Enjoyed this very much. Old Atlantan here....remember when this was an L&N RR yard...named for John Tilford, an L&N president. I believe that Inman was named for Samuel Inman.....Atlanta cotton merchant and businessman....but could be wrong. Keep up the good work.

    Enjoyed this one dated 2 Sep 2016 (my dad's bday a 100 years ago in 1916). Tilford and Inman were busy that Friday . I must have heard a train pass every 30 minutes by Fontaine Road/Cooper Lake Road and Nickajack Road. Then quiet on the Labor Day weekend.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  8 років тому

      +Charles Ralston Cool! Yeah, it was a busy day, but not much more than usual. There are typically 60 trains per day going in and out. Labor Day saw reduced scheduled NS service because of the holiday.

    • @Three_Rivers_Rail_Photography
      @Three_Rivers_Rail_Photography 8 років тому

      Yeah, I don't understand while they have it trailing because they usually don't unless they have no choice. I have only seen two heritage units. 1 was the Interstate and the other was the Nickel Plate Road when NS did the NKP excursion. I recorded on my channel.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  8 років тому

    That was really great. Back in the 70s when I lived in the area, I had occasion to see the yards but I never figured out or took the time to get as close as you did. I knew they were huge and confusing but your shot of Inman from a bridge was the only view I remember. I did not realize there was any place where you could see the sheds at Inman. I only saw them from aerial photos. Good work.

    • @mbmars01

      Must have been a pretty good lens, then. I liked it, anyway. Saw things I had not seen before. Late in the video there was a shot at Inman with a confusing array of dwarf lights. The lens power probably made them look side by side.

    • @mbmars01

      Yes, that's a typical effect. At extreme zooms the perspective gets lost and makes everything look located next to each other.

    The defect detector announced milepost #8. I assume milepost ZERO is the one in downtown Atlanta.....near Underground....where the city actually began. The Vance AL to Brunswick GA autorack train (at 'Bridge') must have been hauling Mercedes Benz's since the MB assembly plant is at Vance, and Brunswick is MB's main US port. Once upon a time automobiles were hauled 'in the open'.....no protective sides or tops on the rack carriers. But rock throwing trackside vandals soon made protective covering on these carriers mandatory. I've watched your video several times and always see (or hear) something I missed before. Great editing. Be safe out there.....Perry Blvd , Hollywood Rd., etc. aren't exactly known to be warm and fuzzy neighborhoods.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  7 років тому

      Nice that you discover new things the more often you watch it. I typically also see details only when I edit the videos, but not necessarily while recording the material. I know the area isn't great but I rarely go there. It's not close to where I live anyway.

      Greg H I know this is a rather old comment but my dad worked as a quality control manager for a company that supplied parts for the big 3 auto makers, he made several trips to Detroit to the ford plant, Kansas City, Janesville, WI to name just a few and I remember him telling me when I was a kid in the mid-eighties about how they were going to have to cover all the rail cars because of the damage to the cars. Sorry, you gave me flashbacks to my childhood... thanks!

    I'm amazed at how clean all the NS motive units are. BTW, does anyone know why ostensible competitors would share motive units? Why would BNSF want NS to use one of their units in a consist?

    • @boredtacos19
      @boredtacos19 8 років тому +7

      It makes it easier for trains to interchange with other railroads, they don't have the hassle of switching engines. Also it makes sense for railroads like BNSF and NS, (this applies to other railroads too, its just an example)
      because while they are both railroads, they aren't competitors; NS is East and BNSF is west. Freight still needs to move across the imaginary borders between railroads, so having efficient interchange of freight is important. Also, railroads tend not to think in the vein of "We shouldn't do this; we might be helping a competitor more than it helps us." Railroads have a lot of competition, not only from other railroads, but from trucking. They know that doing things that have little effect on themselves to harm a competitor will harm the industry, which will harm them in the long run.
      In short, its all in good business to have good relationships.

    This is one of the most awesome videos I've seen. How do you access these places? Did you work for the railroad? Have you been to the yard in Irondale, Al.? Love the video's , thanks for sharing

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  4 роки тому +2

      I'm very happy you enjoyed watching the video! I'm not working for a railroad and all that's in the video was filmed from public spaces (there are bridges over both yards, which is cool). I have filmed at Irondale; the videos are in the "Railroad Town Birmingham" playlist on my channel main page in the "Great Railfanning Spots" section.

      Would you ever consider doing some railfanning on the Brunswick District?

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  8 років тому

      If I would live near that line, I would surely do. From where I live, however, it would be 4-5 hours by car. That's too much for the few trains that show up there. I would rather go to Waycross or Folkston instead. I'm occasionally in Macon, where the Brunswick Districts ends.

    Been in the Tilford yard a couple times at the REDI center. Busy place.

    • @LatitudeSky
      @LatitudeSky 8 років тому

      also pointing out, the area around Tilford and Inman is... not a place you want to be in after dark, and you'd be well advised to be careful during the day, too. It's a rough part of town.

    Wow, thanks so much for this video, it's a fantastic pleasure to watch!
    Very skillful filming and editing too as always, lots of variety in trains and power such as the KCS and the 2434 and its slug, and the radio chatter really adds a cool dimension to it.
    It's interesting how they seem to often pair a GE with an SD70.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  8 років тому +1

      Cool, thank you! Such nice feedback is really a push for the motivation to produce more content like this! Yeah, I also wondered about this common pairing, but I have no actual clue why they do this.

    •  8 років тому +1

      I really appreciate it the work that goes into it, which is a lot more than just the filming part, and given the comments we all really appreciate the time you put into this so yeah a real Thank You!

    • @mbmars01

      Thanks! If you mean the train symbols, these are called by the crews when passing by signals or mentioned in the communication with the dispatcher. One can listen to railroad radio using a scanner.

    I have a question?is their a reason why a oil train have a boxcar in front of the tanker car and at the end of the tanker car of each train..

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  8 років тому +1

      These are called buffer cars and their purpose is too weaken the impact of potential hazards like collisions or fire on engines, crews, and also the tank cars themselves.
