I love that you're able to go into detail about what it is you actually do as an economist, it's interesting to learn about! I've had similar jobs with taking minutes and being intimidated by other people, it definitely just takes practice! Good teams should want to help you improve, and everyone starts from somewhere, so don't feel bad :)
Yes they definitely do want to help me improve, they’re a great team and we have a very nice supervisor. I just need to get used to feeling confused and uncomfortable, apparently that’s normal in our 20s? Haha. By now I thought I’d be finishing up law/grad school and now Im just lost in the sauce about what I want to do- that’s life I guess.
@@SelenaTrevino That's totally normal! A big secret to life after school is that you've gotta stop comparing yourself to where you thought you would be or thought you wanted to be. Life throws so many curveballs at you, your interest and priorities change, opportunities come up that you never thought you'd want or need to take, and that's just ok! You're kicking butt in your career! It takes a lot of trial and error figuring out what you really want/need, but all that is is healthy growth :)

@@SelenaTrevino Just remember that like you're totally different than you were at 5 and 10 years old, you're gonna be a lot different at 30, 40, etc. there's no way you can predict what you "should" be doing so try to not be too hard on yourself about planning and trying to do everything exactly "right" :)

That’s one thing I love about my new job, it seems like a greater majority of my coworkers are females/minorities and it makes me feel so much better every time I clock in! Lol
No way? That’s amazing! Yeah when I worked at a non-profit right out of college it was mainly womxn of color and that was definitely a nice change :) what is your new job, or what industry are you working in?
I work for a healthcare company in the billing department! Also my company name is centene, they have inclusions groups for different people: veterans, women, LBGTQ, POC and there’s one more but I forget. I’m going to join the POC one once my 90 days is up and see what it’s about!
I hope more political operatives, lobbyists, fundraisers, policy wonks and economists start vlogging because I think we have the coolest careers and there's such little visibility - you never really know if you're as productive as your peers are
I wish! Though I don’t see it happening unfortunately. Especially those who work for the gov! I looked for months for another economist before I landed my first job in economics and never found one that was work/lifestyle related and just a person being themselves! That’s the content I crave so that’s why I make that type of content! But I agree, I’d love to see more careers/people vlog their lives, it would be so helpful!
Though I must say you can’t really tell how productive someone is by a vlog. It’s an edited part of our day and curated to tell our story. If that makes sense! Like I mainly vlog before work, during breaks and after work!

I felt the same way as an intern taking meeting notes! Sometimes I didn't even know what they were talking about and felt so out of place.
YEEES! I am in my first year in this position and mostly everyone else is a seasoned economist, so while we may have the same title we have very different experiences. So I'm still trying to navigate that :) thank you for sharing!!

What did you major in college? I'm planning on majoring in economics but I'm still unsure. if you did major in economics, how was your experience?
My experience was overall good- it was really hard since I had 2-3 jobs and was highly active in organizations but I enjoyed learning about so many different aspects of economics.

Would you recommend being a economist? Is it stressful? Is it hard?
it is definitely stressful and it can be challenging, but for some people it's worth it! it definitely depends on your goals and work/life balance hopes
I want to double major in econ & business. Hopefully I won't burn out but I want to ask this question: do you need a high lvl of math or is basic math enough? I googled but they said basic math was enough however, I want to ask you
It really depends on your schools requirements and what you want to do! But being good at math is always helpful!

How do you become an economist? And what is the average salary of said job?
There are many different ways to become an economist but first and foremost you need a degree in economics! Salary ranges vary by location and sector you can find averages online!

I think so! Depends on your location though, you can look up pay scales: www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/salaries-wages/2023/general-schedule/
How much did you pay for your degree?!
Good question, I went to an in state public school so prices were not very high! And I had scholarships and grants too.
Are economists well paid?
100%! Especially if you get a PHD
Do you need a lot of maths to become an economist?
Yes! & lots of economics classes!
