I attended Wrestlemania 35, and my goodness getting out of there was insane. We resorted to walking against traffic through a tunnel full of ubers. Once we reached the other side, it began to rain. We finally wound up hiring an uber that was 40 minutes away. We waited under an awning with some other wrestling fans and we talked about the show. Then the hero of the evening, a man dressed as Stone Cold Steve Austin emerged with a box of handwarmers that he found behind a dumpster. It was a gift from the wrestling gods in our time of need. We made it back to our Air BnB in Brooklyn close to 4am. An evening I will never forget.

I agree, but I'd do it at 34. As to keep it a prototype, so there's less hindsight with the booking, I'd have each night dedicated to a brand. 34 night one can be Raw's, headlined by Reig- sorry, I mean BALOR vs Lesnar, night 2 can be SmackDown headlined by Asuka vs Flair, which in my opinion should've been the main event of wm34 anyway!
Then, you flip it for 35, with your main events being the ones for each night (but just have Lynch vs Rousey) and 36 can be where you mash them together.

A lot of the mistakes can just be the match ups.
-You could say Roman from Mania 32-34 as he was always the main event and no one wanted him there since he was still inexperienced with a weak character.
-Not doing Undertaker vs Sting at Mania 31 and instead having Triple H lazily beat the icon.
-Triple H vs Orton at Mania 25 not being No Holds Barred
-Hurting Rey Mysterio's title win at Mania 22 by 1) giving them only 8 minutes and having the super over Kurt Angle lose. Should have been Rey vs Orton to give Rey full crowd support and then we could get a rematch to Undertaker vs Kurt Angle
-Doing Cena Rock 2 instead of including Punk or doing Punk v Rock.
-Not having Savage Wrestle at Mania 9 who definitely could still go
-Jericho and KO going on second instead of first or near the end of Mania 33

HHH vs Undertaker at WM27 was an awesome match that doesn’t get enough praise. I watched it live in the front row and it was by far the highlight of the night. When HHH hit undertaker with the tombstone that was the closes the streak had ever come to ending imo. Everyone around me was screaming “that’s it”. The feeling around hhh always burying talent to make himself look good worked for the match making you feel like he just might do it. Mix that with the game stealing undertakers finisher which is the end all be all of finishers made for a nail biter of a false finish. Not one time during that match was I bored and no one in that arena thought the match “went on too long” at least not at the time. How anyone who considers themself a wrestling fan can hate on this match is beyond me.

I was there too (sitting in the first row of risers behind the floor seats). I honestly didn’t think HHH vs Taker seemed long at all. And that WM needed them to fill time with a great match too, considering almost everything else was average at best and complete garbage at worst. My personal pick for second best match was Cody vs Rey, a match no one ever talks about.

    • @KingOfWinter
      @KingOfWinter Рік тому +2

@eriklarson7023 Hell yeah man it was easily the second best match of the night. That was when I knew Cody could be a star if they let him and Rey always gives it his best.
You remember where Cena tackled Miz through the turnbuckle? His head hit the concrete right by my feet it was awesome. At the time I thought if they pushed Miz right he could’ve been a knock off rock with his awesome chant but they made him look second rate his whole title reign and then wondered why no one liked the main event. Sometimes I don’t understand wwe at all lol.
On the other side of the coin from Rey v Cody being surprisingly good, Edge v Del Rio was nowhere near as good as I thought it would be. It was awesome that we got to see Edge win his last match at the time and the fact he won was a surprise but the match itself was as you said mediocre. Snooki gave it her all though the fans booed her but she tried and was a little impressive. Also we got to see the first of 3 weird Daniel Bryan vs sheamus matches at mania which lead to the yes movement so that was kind of cool in hindsight lol

    • @eriklarson7023
      @eriklarson7023 Рік тому +1

@@KingOfWinter Wow, that’s still a pretty cool memory even at a lackluster WM. I was in the third row at Royal Rumble ‘02 and Taker took Maven into the crowd at the end of my row :D
Yeah, Miz got the Jericho treatment, being a third wheel in his main event match. Edge vs Del Rio was a little disappointing but understandable once we learned of Edge’s physical condition. The finish of Orton vs Punk copied a spot from the go-home Smackdown so IMO it was too predictable. What really let me down was Bryan/Sheamus being demoted to the pre-show, then replaced by a battle royal won by the useless Great Khali…I was really looking forward to that match, too.

Some more things everyone needs to remember about Hogan: He took pro-wrestling from small territory based business to being a global phenomenon. He was the one who created the first boom in wrestling with Hulkmania. All the big 4 PPVs started with banking on him and his drawing ability.
That's not all, the second boom in wrestling business was also down Hulk Hogan, when he turned heel & NWO started, beginning the Monday night War.
Nobody has more impact on the business in history than him. Nobody, okay Vince can be the other one. But no other wrestler.
Hogan's success wasn't down to any single promotion, AWA, NWA, WWF, WCW, he was the undisputed draw.

    2. The Miz as a Wrestlemania main eventer
    3. Hulk Hogan at Wrestlemania 7 and onwards
    4. Shawn Micheals vs Bret Hart Wrestlemania 12 having One Fall in a freaking 60 MIN Iron match
    5. Wrestlemania 32 except 2 matches
    Etc.

I’m surprised Ric Flair vs Hogan wasn’t higher on the list, but I’ve read/heard many reports that to get Sid into the WWF his contract stated a Wrestlemania main event and that also lead to Flair/Hogan not happening as the payout for that to be ignored was way more than Vince was willing to pay.

I was at Mania 35, the transportation crisis cannot be overstated. My buddy and I were a 20 minute drive from MetLife but an Uber would’ve cost 90 bucks, so we had to take the subway. Cue two hours of waiting in the pouring rain for the bus, another two of trying to take the subway, and not getting to the AirBNB until five in the morning, a full four and a half hours after the show ended.

#1 is akin to watching a baseball game in extra innings. At some point, people stop caring, esp. when it goes into the wee hours of the morning. It grows very noticeable as the innings continue onwards. 3 hours is fine, 4 hours is endurable, but +5 is asking for one to begin growing antsy. Never fun to endure esp. when fatigue has sunk in and all you can think of is going home and going to sleep.

One that I miss in this list: Wrestlemania 34. Almost all of it:
-Strowman and a freaking child beating Sheamus and Cesaroto win the RAW Tag Titles
-Asuka's long-running win streak being ended by Charlotte Flair (the person who needed it the least). By submission. Only for Carmella to cash in her MiTB briefcase two days after
-Them somehow blowing it with Styles vs Nakamura
-And last but not least, Brock retaining against Roman, extending an underwhelming, 1-year long, championship reign by a part-timer when everything since the previous Mania was prepared for Roman to win the Universal title in the Main Event. And that's without using the power of hindsight and adding Roman having to vacate the title due to illness when he actually beat Brock

They could have finished the show in time if Trips didn’t have to have a boring 30 minute Triple H Wrestkemania match when the crowd was already exhausted. They just wanted to cheer for Becky and go home.

Happily, a major mistake has been averted this year by keeping Sami Zayn out of the main event.
I like him, and the moment of him winning the title might be great, but we’ve seen enough of these Kofi-Mania type fan “movements” to know that they have very longevity beyond that moment.
Zayn is better a perennial chaser. He would be completely forgettable as champion.
