Mae West was always the first person to laugh at herself in the characters she created and that's what makes her writing so brilliant , she was in on the joke and it was always hysterical , she gave the parts she played courage and dignity in fighting against odds not in their favor and succeeding as she did in life ! and this particular aria is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written and she does it magically so that I'm sure Saint-Saens in heaven must have been trilled by it ! and if you don't believe me , UA-cam it - she's incredible in it and sings it with grace and charm and humor and gives it an element the professional singers could never hope for without the venue ! in other words she was talented to a point which is almost unbelievable - but the films are the proof - she was a genius !!!!!!!!! and always a star !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love her lasciviousness during the foreplay with Samson's pigtail. Hilarious. I probably would never have seen this had it not been for UA-cam. Thank you so very much for making my day. Happy New Year.
The reason I will always love Mae West is because she was the first actress to address the African American actors in her films as contemporaries and friends, and it was her personal suggestion to do so. She had black friends in real life so she felt why not in her movies. While all other movies showed whites in elitist roles and blacks were subservient, mae was down to earth and saw those characters as human beings just like anyone else. This was rare in the 30's. This is what added to her being a trail blazer and ahead of her time.
Oh she is just TOO MUCH!!! My fave moment is when she struts downstage in pure BURLESQUE fashion and blows that little puff of air while "Sammie" is calling out "Dalila, Dalila" - that woman knew EXACTLY what she was all about - - and so FUNNY! This cracks me up every single time. Luvya Mae!
Mae West was absolutely gorgeous; beautiful eyes, teeth, etc. I've heard commentators say she was homely and unattractive!?! WTF?! Are they blind???? She may have been as hedonistic as they come, but she was a wonderful person. A true diamond in the rough.
Helen Weinstock @ Can't believe anyone can call her homely and unattractive. I don't think that the men of the 30's would have agreed. She was the sex symbol of her time. By the way, she had an exceptional voice! I'm really impressed.
And she looks way younger than she was, I was shocked to find out she didn’t start her film career until she was almost 40, even when she was in her 80s, she still looked 20-25 years younger. She definitely lived a very fun carefree life and lived young at heart, I feel like that was her secret to looking so great for her age
While female stars 10-15 years then her younger struggled to maintain their youth - she owned her appeal at any age. I don't think any other actress of her time approached her ease and confidence level. Amazing woman.
WOW!!! One of my favorite operatic duets, and she really did it! I don't think they would have dubbed it, but she really hit those notes! And what a Delilah she made! I would love to see this entire movie. Thanks for sharing this bit, it was Mae at her best!
She was an extraordinary and intelligent woman, far ahead of her time, in 1949 The New York Times said: "Mae West is an American institution. Like Donald Duck, Chinatown and General Grant's Tomb, you have to see her at least once. once in his life."
"she is Cleopatra... to a plumber" - W C Fields. (But I think that brilliantly manufactured character is merely testimony to her genius - like Gervais creating David Brent)
Wow! That's a great voice. You're right. She could have made it as a singer. She was really such a rounded performer: comedian, sexpot, singer, actress and even playwright! By the way, her comedic timing was as good as Lucille Ball's who is considered by many to be the best female comedian of her time.
Can anyone imagine Mae West allowing herself to be dubbed. If she couldn’t sing this opera herself she wouldn’t be doing it- or I’m no judge of character.
Anyways, to glorify hookers and lowlifers is not a positive image for us women. A woman that is telling you that it`s ok to sell your body. really?! she was from a middle class home, she was a welleducated woman and she saw that there was more money to talk like an illiterated and live as a prostitute " only at the stage" ... It`s really not cool for anybody to have such a bad example.
Panqq Ito WOW honey you REALLY need to get a life! It is called HUMOR and is FANTASY. If you had bothered to watch any of her films you would realize what a strong person she is who wins over all the creeps. Good luck to you.

@Jeanette York , 💙♥️ sooooooooo true !
The most hilarious line is when she says to Samson: "Come here, Sammy!"...
I love her lasciviousness during the foreplay with Samson's pigtail. Hilarious. I probably would never have seen this had it not been for UA-cam. Thank you so very much for making my day. Happy New Year.
I cracked up when her dress went over the guy's head and she said "Oh, pardon me, Joe".

I've heard this aria sung by the best mezzo-soprano's. But OMG Mae's rendition has to be my favorite of all time, hands down.
I sang this at an outdoor concert and an American man told me Mae West sang Delilah! WOW! found it!
I just love the way she struts and i did not know she could sing opera
She was brilliant! Mom gave my sister her middle name
Mae West was absolutely gorgeous; beautiful eyes, teeth, etc. I've heard commentators say she was homely and unattractive!?! WTF?! Are they blind???? She may have been as hedonistic as they come, but she was a wonderful person. A true diamond in the rough.

Ik what you mean but people have there preferences. Not everyone will like a certain thing or person. She's dead. I don't think she cares.
Oh I think she had a bit of glitter and shine to her

Hell I didn't know she could sing opera! Wow! She paved the way for women to be themselves. She was very smart.
I love my Brooklyn Bombshell!!! She was street smart beautiful witty and tough - she road Hollywood - not the other way around!
I love her, she was hilarious
"Waddya MEAN who dubbed me I did mah own singin'!" She was always irritated by that question.
Wow so beautiful old movies 🎥
Sublime. And that COSTUME! Amazing. And that melody is so gorgeous even Mae can't manage to ruin it.
Andrew Rudin what do u mean even Mae?
I like how she looks at his hair locks and how the woman tries to keep a straight face watching them.
and I Love Also Caselotti For The Voice of Snow White in The 1937 Disney Animated First Feature.
WOW MAE WEST COULD KILL SAMSON AND JOHN THE BAPTIST IN THE SAME MOVIE. THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO
POR QUE PERGUNTO EU,NÃO PASSAM MAIS ESSES FILMES NA TV?MAE WEST ERA DEMAIS!!!
That was horrible and I absolutely LOVED it!
Mae West's outfits influenced everything from life jackets to Emerson radios, which are highly sought these days by collector's.
She was an extraordinary and intelligent woman, far ahead of her time, in 1949 The New York Times said: "Mae West is an American institution. Like Donald Duck, Chinatown and General Grant's Tomb, you have to see her at least once. once in his life."
Un phénomène cette Mae West.
...no words..
❤
Not just a hot babe & a wicked sense of humor, but a fairly good singing voice. A real shame I couldn't come up & see her some time.
Her performance in the radio _Garden of Eden_ sketch got her banned from radio for more than ten years.
never another like her....darn...!!!!
My favorite Mae West movie.. its EXCELLENT
"C'mere Sammy."
"You're on!"
Oh yeah? How

Mae West did have the torpedo bras first not Madonna and not invented by Jean Paul Gaultier LOL

A one of a kind superstar. Love her.
"she is Cleopatra... to a plumber" - W C Fields. (But I think that brilliantly manufactured character is merely testimony to her genius - like Gervais creating David Brent)
The dress looks amazing on her.
i knew a guy in stockholm who worked in the harbour but sometimes appeared in drag.He walked just like mae west and was bitchy too
She so beautiful and sexy number one lady in Hollywood,
Yes and yes tomorrow and yesterday
Sorry This is Not Jeanette Macdonald Singing Opera in This Movie. I Love Jeanette Than Mae West
I always thought that Mae West could have also made it big just as a singer.
Wow! That's a great voice. You're right. She could have made it as a singer. She was really such a rounded performer: comedian, sexpot, singer, actress and even playwright! By the way, her comedic timing was as good as Lucille Ball's who is considered by many to be the best female comedian of her time.
Yeah. The future may see another Lucille Ball, but we will never again see one like Mae West.
A true star
hA, that costume could not be more vulgar or insane ... and she wears it with the perfect smirk.

Gimme the "A"
I just love these movies she’s sexy she’s hot she is loved.
Only Mae West could have gotten away with this.
It's hideous and beautiful at the same time. Lol
She likes his dreads
Can anyone imagine Mae West allowing herself to be dubbed. If she couldn’t sing this opera herself she wouldn’t be doing it- or I’m no judge of character.
Too funny for words.
She was really something
Now I want to know how the gambling debt guy turned out.
she was so beautiful, and not toothpick thin. what happened :(
eekmonkey Twiggy
Well, it was a bit of a hot mess. And no one can do “hot mess” with more sex appeal than the incomparable Mae West.
Mae West she would try anything once lol well she rfeally was not an opera singer buyt she put this one over anyway
Can't tell if this " singing" is decent or just plain awfull!! LOL. MAE IS WONDERFUL.
Brilliant when wit was seductive
Mae is a Combination of Bette Midler...Marilyn Monroe and Mae West lol
She may sound like a sick cat, but she's Mae West!
she wasn`t that good singer... was it her voice?
Mae did her own singing in all her films.
That is the point!

Oh...I thought we were talking about Mae west. Out of touch.

I worship her!
