I have come across your videos a lot when I was doing research on what camera I wanted to buy for my UA-cam videos (Panasonic G7,G85, Sony A6300, A6500, etc.). They are well made and cover a good bit of information. I finally decided on the G85 and I'm now watching all of your content in regards to Panasonic cameras and decided to subscribe because you deservce more subs.
Thank you, I greatly appreciate your subscription, I also like to watch your videos.
I have the G85 and I tested both iDynamic and iResolution. I found iDynamic on auto to change exposure automatically and sometimes unpredictably. So I recommend not using this setting. iDynamic is useful for good lighting conditions when there is a lot of contrast and you want to capture the footage with a compressed dynamic range. I would not use it at all in poor lighting conditions because the high ISO noise is made apparent. In medium lighting conditions with high contrast, I shoot with CinelikeD with contrast and sharpness all the way down, turn iDynamic to high or standard, and turn both highlights and shadows all the way down to hide the noise, but still retain the higher apparent dynamic range. With iResolution, I have it permanently on extended, which is the lowest setting. Not sure if it makes much of a difference at all.
These remarks refer to both features on video. I would turn both features off for photos.
Thank you for sharing your findings!
Thanks a lot for this video! That saved me a lot of time testing it by myself.
You're welcome, thank you for watching!
Bought a gh-3 years ago to put a big toe in the mirrorless world...It hs never ceased to amaze me.And it's got the best ergo's on ANY camera I'v ever used (Since 1968!)
Panasonic MFT are indeed easy to like, handling is excellent.
Thanks for the video, this enabled me to decide to keep both settings turned off.
You're welcome, keeping these off is probably the best idea.
This video is way above my expentasions. No wonder why it have 0 dislikes.
Thanks, I'm glad that you like it!
Really good job on this delicate topic my friend. I agree with you on just about all of it particularly the iResolution segment. Of the thousands of photo and video shoots I’ve done with GH4’s not one was better using iRez. Thanks much!
Thank you!
I enjoy your tutorials , you are clear and concise in explaining everything, And so it is , that now, I'll be asking you a question about the G85 that I have finally purchased though have not received as yet... I've been shooting on and off with the Panasonic GH2 for about ten years, I love the Cinema 24fps feature, and actually tried the GH4 and realized that it can't compare, so I still shoot with the GH2, though it does not have IBIS or a weather sealed body, it gives me a great quality Video.... My question for you is, will I be able to match that look I'm getting with the GH2 with my new G85, what settings do you recommend using to mimic the Cinema mode of the GH2, I'm looking forward to having the G85 IBIS for hand held work...... Thanks for your time......
Thanks, this answered all my questions.
My pleasure!
Thinking about switching from the Canon m50 to either the 80d or the Panasonic g85, and I feel like the HDR feature really combats some lowlight situations I find myself in often. I feel like Panasonic is more professional for filmmaking and short films and things of that nature, what do you think?
HDR doesn't work in video. The best upgrade would be Sony A6400, that is the best camera around that price point at the moment.
Thank you so much ! that was exactly the info i needed !
Always my pleasure!
Hi I found this comment and I have no idea what this is about
" If you plan to edit video films with this camera, you will have to deal with the following problem.
No matter what format (AVCHD, MP4, 4k), resolution or frame rate, there will be 13 frames/images without sound at the beginning of each clip. Depending on the editing program (Pinnacle Studio 22), there are also an additional 15 frames at the end without sound. With the editing programs DaVinci Resolve, Shotcut and Magix Video Delux, the sound is only missing at the beginning of the clip.
When these clips are put together and played, there are audible interruptions of around 0.2 to 0.5 seconds. To avoid this, you have to shorten each clip at the beginning and, if necessary, at the end by hand. "
iDynamic works great on all panasonic cameras in video mode especially. increases DR quite a lot in my testings (gm1, fz200, lx100)
I disagree, as I have explained. It is contra-productive gimmick. There are much better and more predictable way to increase DR.
Thanks for clearing that up. The in-camera info about i.resolution seemed too good to be true. Wish Panasonic would take a more matter-of-fact approach. Their cameras are good, why the BS?
You're welcome, these futures are for non-professional users, in some specific situations, it can work quite well, but mosty it is just marketing.
Thanks for the video. i.resolution doesn't affect video?
You're welcome, I honestly don't remember, but I definitely recommend to adjust the sharpness in picture style setting rather than using i.Resolution.
Very logical and clear.
Thank you!
Great Test. Thank You!
You're welcome!
Which grade of these settings is recommended? Can I use AUTO for both, or should I go with a lower preset value instead, standard?
I recommend off.
Very good and quick video.
Thank you!
Well explained, thanks a lot.
You're welcome and thank you for watching!
Great video mate! How would you see this if you were to take the same picture using a6500 as opposed to G85? Also, the only lens I have for a6500 is the sigma 19mm f2.8. Any recommendations for sort of all round lens fast Afocusing lens? Thanks
Sonys sensor can capture more dynamic range and it produces significantly less noise, so it is generally better in high dynamic range situations, but in reality both have very good video quality, difference is bigger with stills.
My recommendation for for all-round lens out of the 3 options is actually 16-50mm 3.5-5.6 PZ kit lens. Take a look at the review on this channel.
The Hybrid Shooter thanks! I'll take a look at the other video. Any recommendations for a fixed aperture fast AF lens? I thought it has to be an OSS lens in order to be 5-axis stabilized.
If you mean fixed focal length, Sigma 19mm F2.8, Sigma 30mm F1.4, Samyang 12mm F2, Sony 35mm F1.8 OSS and Sony 50mm 1.8 OSS are very good lenses.
The Hybrid Shooter yes, fixed foul length. I'm thinking sigma 30mm 1.4 have you used it with your a6500? Many thanks for all your replies
No, I personally haven't used it so far, I will probably get one in the future.
I have panasonic g85 and got into shooting beauty videos but the looks is not what i was expecting-looking too contrasty and dark? i have 14-42mm kit lense and using a ring light and the soft box. Thought of getting rid of g85 but some people say its the lense.. do you think so too? If it is, could you recommend me a lense for slick beauty cosmetics videos? What do u think about 42.5mm f1.7? Thanks!!
That is difficult to tell, it can also be caused by the settings, you can adjust both contrast and brightness in the settings. You can take a look at my video about video settings on G85 here: ua-cam.com/video/0NIQZyhgh4w/v-deo.html
Prime lens with bright aperture will certainly give you better results, choice depends on what focal length do you prefer. 20mm F1,7, 25mm F1.7 and 42.5mm F1.7 are all good lenses.
Sounds like you need to look into LUT.
thanks!
Can somebody tell me why this feature is greyed out on my gh5 ?
Contradicting settings. There isn't any reason to use this o GH5 anyway.
Thanks a lot dude.
You're welcome!
What's your best Jpeg setting in the camera?
Standard, +1 contrast, +1 saturation is my most favorite out of camera JPEG setting.
Thanks. Useful
You're welcome!
haha. First. Great review mate. Also it matches my own tests. I completely disliked the i.Dynamic feature as to the loss of contrast and affecting the raw files. i.Resolution in my Opinion is good to use on low / standard / high for example when you really don't want to do post processing (when you have a bunch of holiday snaps or anything for example). Thanks a lot for putting the work into that video.
Yeah, on occasions it can work well, but for me the biggest problem is that it is really unpredictable.
true. Maybe Panasonic could fix that with a firmware update to make it more consistent. Hopefully you get enough likes so they get the informations from that video :) keep it up!
Thank you, but these software enhancements have been around for a long time, most of manufacturers have something like this, and IMO these are mostly marketing gimmicks, and I would much prefer if Panasonic focused on fixing autofocus rather than this.
Autofocus is not broken, how people wish it would work is.
+Chris Klugh Have you ever seen Sony Hybrid AF or Canon Dual Pixel AF?
Very instructive, thanks!
You're welcome!
iDynamic for video is one of the underestimated and misunderstood modes for getting superior dynamic range out of that MFT sensor especially when using Cinelike D
It still isn't great, Panasonic M43 cameras definitely miss proper flat picture style from their L-mount cameras.
Pretty interesting:)
hey can we recover shadows and highlights of g85 precisely.....?
Did u notice I resolution maybe sharpen Zoomed In pictures? Coz those r usually the ones that suffer in picture quality !...
I see. That’s why I couldn’t select HDR mode because this already works like HDR but much intelligent.
No, HDR mode is something different.
You just tested from off all the way to high...
You have your tripod plate the wrong way around, it should be flush with the camera rather than sticking out at the front.
I prefer to have it mounted this way, so that I can better balance camera when using heavy lenses.
