Thanks for the tutorial, adding collision objects and cloth objects in the Object Properties has never seemed to just work first time for me. I've just read you've said you have to double click the collision object before applying the collision property and it's worked first time, many thanks. What a ridiculous way Autodesk have designed this feature.
Hi! Thanks for the tutorial, I found it very useful!! There are very few tutorials with rounded rails. I managed to model the whole scene but sth weird happens with the curtain, it becomes longer throughout time, I just want it to move along the X axis, not along Z. What do you think I am doing wrong? Thanks!
Hey, sorry for the late reply. You probably have this figured out by now. If so, disregard the following; I believe that its something to do with the "Simulation Parameters", (top right of screen). The gravity or cm/unit could be having an effect. Also, your standard dimension could be different to mine. I believe my standard dimension is "mm" if you are using "m" or "inches" your parameters will be different.
Check that the collision object is set up correctly, this is a common mistake. Double check that you have followed each step on this tutorial exactly. Hope this helps.
Hmmm almost none of the online tutorials on max cloth show how to apply the modifier to a single object that is made up of multiple elements (for example a kite tied to some strings) - The simulations work of course but the strings / ropes detach from the kite itself. How do we pin vertices to other vertices from a different element within the same mesh? Can anyone help?
Hi Gogo, I would say it is possible by using the same technique as shown in this tutorial, only pin the string as opposed to the cylinder, worth a try.
Okay when you say for me to select the top row THEN make a Group and select CYLINDER - that did NOT happen, but when I DIDN'T select the top row I was able to make the cylinder the right one?!!! Maybe it's because I'm using Max 2017, but just wanted other people to know because it shut down my program 4 times!! :-( OTHERWISE A GREAT VIDEO & THANK YOU!! :-)
Hey, sorry for the late reply. You probably have this figured out by now. If so, disregard the following; Not too sure why this might have happened. Sometimes you need to click away from the model to reset the cursor. Maybe you were still in a previous setting.

Hi Prabhat. You must click twice when in the cloth modifier, it looks like you have selected but when you close the modifier and and open back up you might notice that the cylinder is not selected as collision object. Hope this helps.
Love how you clearly explain everything, but I have a few doubts. at the start you show a option tool bar where you show the method of how you easily select the edges without spend time for it, I dont have that... I really dont see that tool bar in my 3ds max. Also the shift selection bar were you showed how to make the holder. I didnt have the yellow mark where we could easily drag and shape the edges, can you just explain how to sort these things out
Hey, sorry for the late reply. You probably have this figured out by now. If so, disregard the following; I didn't apply any materials or textures. Maybe convert it to an editable poly once you are satisfied with your curtain then apply your material. I rendered this curtain for an animation after the tutorial. ua-cam.com/video/ORDgNfiZvzQ/v-deo.html
Your cylinder object has to be a collision object in the simulation or you won't be able to select it as a sticky surface. Just add it as a simulation object under "object properties" in the cloth modifier panel, then highlight the cylinder in the right window and select "collision object"
Hi Soundara, I'm not too sure about this one. Check if you have followed the tutorial exactly. Maybe the order that you have grouped the objects is having an effect.
I'm not sure what I did. I had the same problem with the cloth not sticking to the rod. I finally got that fixed but now when I start the simulation the cloth falls off of the rod instead of pulls. I'll try from the beginning again and see if I've missed a step.
usually you have to check the object properties several times as they sometimes randomly reset and put your preset to silk or satin for better result...

urgh. Finally itworked. Lol. I think if the calculation like the length of cloth and how much we want it to animate doesnt make sense, it'll give us the long stretch error. Thanks for this. :) So to people who get dt-increase therefore cloth stretch error, just try with a shorter length of cloth, it'll work for sure. haha.
Good one. Really sorry for the late response, haven't been too active lately. Trying to get the time to get back into it. Not too sure about the curved rail, but it's interesting. I'd say if you can animate the transition of the cylinder it should work.
Yes, I got caught out at the beginning too. When the object properties (cloth modifier) window is open it can seem as though the collision object has been selected. You must double click the name of the object you be the collision object then apply the collision property. You shouldn't have to restart the application, at most just reopen the object properties window. I hope this helps, if not send me the file and I will take a look through it. My email is designburnsinfo@gmail.com.
When I create my "rail" group and try to assign it to the cylinder, it does not allow me to click on the cylinder at all. Why do you think this is? Is there any way you could help me with this issue? Thanks for your time!
I figured it out! There is an annoying glitch on 3ds max that sometimes cancels the selection of making an object a collision object. One must re-do the application for it to work. Thanks anyway!
Ok then, probably not hardware!! I just used a partitioned mac so you should be faster than that. Is there anything else in your model that could be interfering with the simulation?
Hmm, may be having a UVW unwrap modifier on top can slow it down... or may be I should decrease the polycount on that fabric piece. Anyway thank's for your attention, I will try to figure it out with expetimenting, may be will have to create an empty scene
Yes I'd say probably the poly count more than anything. Try reducing that first, you might be able to hold on to everything else. Best of luck with it. 👍
Why everytime I simulate the curtain moves only on the top (where the rail is) but doesn't move on the bottom without creating the "curtain" effect?
Hi Abigail, check that you have enough segments on your plane (curtain).
I fucking hate cloth simulation in 3ds... i press simulate and it scales something i dont want to have scaled.. wtf is up with it
Hey, sorry for late reply, haven't been active lately, caught up in work. Did you figure this out??

Every time you say "Press F" I can olnly think of "to pay respects" xD
Hahaha, maybe my English isn't the best!!!
My Cloth Disappear after i simulate...I am using max 2020
any help?
may be you are not using enough segments

Love? Love is what I feel for you right now... LOL! THANK YOU!
:) Thank you! (:

Угу бле, когда я выставил "cm/unit: 3", у меня вылетел макс! Так что не желательно это выставлять.

I can't pick cylinder object as surface for curtain...is there any bug?

Make sure you enable 'Ribbon' by right clicking on your toolbar and selecting Ribbon.
Once you have the ribbon activated this should answer your questions.
if i want to see this render view the black shade will appear ? i mean changing the loops make black shade

I'm gonna follow along with this tutorial. It seems super helpful!
where am i find yellow box please tell me........you say choose left viewport and say yellow box to move line...but where to find yellow box
I believe it's just a display setting. The point where the axis meet is where you grab.
Please help... when adding the group it does not want to select the rail (cylinder objecr) what do I do ?

Just add it as a simulation object under "object properties" in the cloth modifier panel, then highlight the cylinder in the right window and select "collision object"
you have to select surface then select the rail
hi sir,
as soon as group it, move scale n rotate tools are getting disabled in my laptop... and i m unable to do anything further
Hi Soundara, I'm not too sure about this one. Check if you have followed the tutorial exactly. Maybe the order that you have grouped the objects is having an effect.
thank you sir
and i am subscribe your channel because . it's solve my problem thank you sir 🤜🤛

I'm doing it step by step but the curtain doesnt attach to the rail. What could it be?
you have to select surface button
Check gravity and collision settings.
Great Tutorial! Thank you! My looping fabric becomes super fat starting with the first frame.. do you know why? Thank you in advance!

do you mean a lower cm/unit?
Thanks King, gravity and number of segments play a huge role. If you scale or stretch the plane beforehand this could have a negative result.
Yes adjusting these settings to suit your own 3Ds setup will be important.
Thank you so much for such a valuable vide😊😊
NICE VERY
GOOD
Thanks RU, much appreciated!
what if the cylinder isn't straight? it's bent?
Good one. Really sorry for the late response, haven't been too active lately. Trying to get the time to get back into it. Not too sure about the curved rail, but it's interesting. I'd say if you can animate the transition of the cylinder it should work.

+Design Burns I am having trouble with the simulation at the end. I sent you an email.
Thank you. smart and useful
Thanks for your comment :)
Thanks!!!!! I always thought I had to use garment maker first!
Lisulk, you are very welcome, glad to help out.
When I simulate, my cloth disappears and only the rail stays. What am I doing wrong?
You have to select nodes then group
Thank you for that tutorial. Your example used many of the features of the cloth modifier in one short tutorial.
Cool, glad it helped you out.
Nice and easy. Thanks a lot for this
No problem. Hope it helped.
its tough
Stick with it, you can do it!
how do you prolong the cylinder?
I used the keyboard shortcut "R" to resize / scale the cylinder, also on top ribbon, then select the relevant axis and drag until you are satisfied.
This is great!!
Thank you Oliver!
Awesome video. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, appreciate that.
Excellent! MAGIC!
Thx! :)
No problem at all, you are very welcome!
where do i find segments in 3d max
i’m not seeing the setting
Hi Danny, when you first add the plane you will have parameters / settings on the right hand side. This is where you can edit the segments.
RHS
Extremely helpful tutorial absolutely brilliant
Thanks very much for your kind words Kineticartist, glad to be of some help.
Great tutorial. Thanks!
You are very welcome El Bar. Thank you!
Thank you !
You're welcome!
Nice clear tutorial!
Thanks
perfect
Thanks Tomi :)
Thanks a lot! Great tutorial!
Thanks Anna
Hi would this tutorial work in 3d studio max 2009?
I don't think it has changed too much so I believe it will work.
When I create my "rail" group and try to assign it to the cylinder, it does not allow me to click on the cylinder at all. Why do you think this is? Is there any way you could help me with this issue? Thanks for your time!

+Stephanie Healey thanks for your comment, I had the same problem ;)!
+Stephanie Healey hi , plz check again cloth object properties i think that's your prob... :)
+Stephanie Healey I tried restarting 3ds Max and it still not working :s
Ok I figured it out, it's not a glitch, just set the cylinder to collision in the Object Properties :p
ok help
Thanks. Follow each step exactly. Check gravity settings, segments on plane and units of measurement.
I wish this simulation worked as fast for me. Takes 30 seconds for 1 frame -_-
I'd say it's just the hardware you're using. Are you using a PC or Laptop?
Doubtful it's hardware - I'm using PC, with the AMD Ryzen 5 1500X CPU
Ok then, probably not hardware!! I just used a partitioned mac so you should be faster than that. Is there anything else in your model that could be interfering with the simulation?

bhai ni ban rha
Thanks!
There is no thing in this world which is more annoying than you hitting that mouse button so hard...
Hahaha, apologies, I don't think that silent mouse button existed at the time of making this video!!
2 words. SLOW DOWN
Hahaha, cheers Sal. It's too exciting to go slow, one must learn to speed up or press pause ; )
