Maybe your cloth needs to be subdivided more or you're dropping the cloth from great height. If the cloth collides with the mesh too hard/fast, there's not enough frames to calculate collision so it falls through.
Thank you so much! I really needed this for a class! Subbed. 5:30 It happened to me It formed like little stars.. One of them looks pretty cool like it was some sort of decoration sewn onto the cloth!
I know, it's a fairly old tutorial, but you forgot to mention that quite often, 3DS Max will glitch out in "object properties" window and will reset collision objects settings. It does it at least once, so you gotta double-check settings almost every time before the simulation is triggered.
Yeah I was getting that whole vertex blob growing thing you mentioned. Thing is I've already gotten self collision up to 10, but while it has minimized the problem, it still seems to be happening.
Thanks so much!!! Great quick tutorial Mike! Also some were having problems with nothing happening on the simulation of cloth to the box. I found that after i made each an editable poly and then redid the cloth set up it worked perfectly! not sure if its a bug or not, but thats how i got it to work when the same thing happened to me. Looking forward to more tutorials!
Bro till 03:45 I followed you but I have a doubt how did you get Viewport configurations box?? where did you clicked? how did it popped out please help me bro I have tried clicking here and there..please help me... Subscriber here
+Christopher Gauge Alt+B to open up the viewport background configuration. It's only one of the many tabs, but an easy shortcut to open the entire dialog. Alternatively, you can click on the "[+]" in the top left corner of the viewport and then select "Viewport Configuration".
thanks alot. well made and simple. some tuts are impossible. yours is very simple to follow. I just studied cloth today actually and you still showed me simple additional tools, all in 9 minutes. cheers mate.
Don't put too much turbo smooth it will lock up the system too many calculations. I prefer mine rough and slightly lower just the basic of what's needed
Please help!! When stimulating local, why does the plan go through the box?? (It falls down). I cannot do it by 3dsmax 2014. While I can do by 3dsmax 2010. What's wrong with 2014 version??
Excellent tutorial, press the "7" key for poly count on scene, it counts hiddent oo , Thank You,m, I was trying to use Apex and found this tutoorial, it should work in UE4, is that correct?
how we can add an image to this bed cover, please make a separate video on how we can add custom image to bed cover, cushion cover, quilts, table covers, or any fabric related objects..please make a video on this topic.
so can we use cloth to sharp edges object like normal box/pyramid? Or it will fail like the first one? I was planning to use cloth to cover my robot model :)
When I create a shape line (splines) it forms itself in length and width , instead of length and height. How can I make the line form itself in length and height?
Thanks for the tutorial Mike. I have a pair of jeans comprising separate parts (legs, belt loops, hip). How do I keep the parts attached in the proper places, but give them individual cloth parameters? I want to puddle them to the floor but the loops keep getting left behind. Also, can I pin parts of the geometry so that it doesn't drape at all? I want to have an item of clothing hanging off a hook.
+Mat Broomfield My first reaction is to ask if you need that great of detail to have the belt loops be part of the simulation, or if you can place them after the fact, or possibly just use a really good map/texture to achieve the same effect. Remember, we only give enough detail to achieve the effect. We don't want to spend all our time on something that's going to be a small part of the background that no one's going to notice. For example, if the pants are going to be crumpled up on the floor, they might be a small part of the background, or far away from the camera, to where the detail required isn't as great as something in the foreground, or is the focus of the piece. If what we're working on is the focus point, then yes, we will definitely need to go through all the trouble to get it as perfect as possible. Second would be to make the loops part of the pants geometry by attaching it so that they are one entire object before the simulation. Maybe just by attaching the loops as another element to the pants object...? I do talk about "pinning" the cloth in this video: ua-cam.com/video/UYqCZRUo5NE/v-deo.html. It may come in handy if you're looking to hang something, but you'll have to play around with it and it may not be required just to hang a cloth on an object. It really depends on the physics of the simulation.
+Mike Woolf Thank you very much for that comprehensive response Mike. Please forgive my ignorance, but how do I attach objects - just by using Boolean operations or do I have to break down the vertices and do it that way?
+Mat Broomfield Boolean (now ProBoolean) operations should be used sparingly because of the things it bakes into your geometry for you. It sometimes takes a lot of control away from the modeler. To attach (and assuming you're objects are Editable Polys), select your object (pants), go to Element mode (5 on the keyboard) and find the "Attach" in the Modify Panel. Activate it and then click on the object you want to attach (loops). The two objects will now be accessed as separate elements under the same object. You may want to make sure they are in place prior to attaching, or you'll have to do it after the fact while in Element mode.
nothing happens, what am i missing? i add the cloth to the plane, went in to object properties, set the plane to cloth and choose the preset silk, then added teh objekts i want it to collide with. then i press simulatel ocal, and nothing happens. any ideas?
Nah dude, i dunno. Did this exactly on another computer and it worked. Try shutting down all virus scan software, firewalls ect. I did and it didnt help either. I mean this shouldnt be this difficult.
unfortunatly I already knew this, I can't find a tutorial to help with what I need. Hopefully you could help? I am creating a pair of headphones and im trying to apply a cloth modifier to the ear covers to give them creases where it attached to the plastic? I am guessing I have to compress it, like you would if modelling a pillow.. Nothing seems to be working :( Great tutorial though, subscibed :D
Nice simple tutorial, if you're prepared for the speed of it. One query though...what If the objects I want the material to collide with don't show up when I go "add object"?
Make sure you don't have your object(s) filtered out when attempting to add them. At 1:57 I select the box. You'll notice there are a lot of icons at the top of the window that are highlighted in blue. Those are selection filters. Your object may be behind one of them. That, or what you're trying to add is currently hidden in your scene. Hidden objects typically won't display in an object selection window.
Mike Woolf Wow, thanks for the detailed and incredibly speedy reply. You were spot on; I didn't have the right filters selected. You've earned yourself a subscriber :)
3970xRocks If you're trying to modify the geometry after the Cloth modifier is applied then you'll probably have to click the "Set Initial State" button after you resize. This tells the Cloth modifier that you have a new geometry state to start from instead of the one that the modifier stacks on top of.
when i clicked on simulate local the plane just dropped down below the box.. so i disabled the gravity but now when i click on simulate local it doesnt do anything. pls help
my simulation just cuts through the object (in this case a box) Any help would be great!

Rly nice tutorial :) ill try to use the cloth modifier to make a shirt for my character. Thank you. Subbed :)
Hey mike, could you be able to do a tutorial simulating parachutes with cloth modifier. It would be helpful, thanks. :)

My cloth just flies in the air and everything gets messed up. Any help would be really appreciated!
Thanks a lot for this video. Very simple and you can get nice results! :)

Hi, In minute 9:31 the 32 faces count represents the 32 triangular faces in the Plan object. Under the hood, it's all triangles.
Why does the cloth fly when I apply the simulation.? My gravity is default -981 Help me please.
amazing tutorial! Very easy! Thanks :D
my pc freeze when i select cloth
Nice Tutorial, Thanks Mike!
MAN! Tks U so much !!!

I'm not sure how to do cloth. It's really hard.

Whats the modifier called ?
You´re a 3d monster!!! Thank you!!

Great Tutorial. Thank you!
my object just stops and floats way above where the box is
Anyone Pls help me, whn i tried to do it, its not cming properly, wht to do ??
When I create a shape line (splines) it forms itself in length and width , instead of length and height. How can I make the line form itself in length and height?
sweet tutorial well done Mike! saved me countless hours modeling a surgical mask
nice video!
This does not work for me at all. I follow EXACTLY what you do and it doesn't work like yours. This is bugged.
+ChannelOfRandomness Toyed about with the offset and depth of the collision object to get it to look normal. Dunno what's wrong with it.
do i want to change any values from object properties ???
Really you are a good tutor. very helpful tutorial. thanks a lot

Have u increased the segments of the plane n the box ...we some time forget to do this little thing...so may b it's not happening...try it !

With an editable poly and turbo smooth modifier, you can get that done.
thankzzz A LOT
My Unit setting in "mm"
Nice and succinct. Thanks Mike!
the plane is going down but it does not catch the box
Very good video,helpfull, thanks
thank you mike, very cool
how can we speed up the plane (collision)action
My clothe falls through my object despite making it the collision object
increase the segments on each side, i had the same problem that fixed it.
too bad you don't make these tutorials anymore, this one is really helpful
Thank u, mate.., it was really helpful.
Excellent video, it is clearly understood everything. Excellent way to explain, straight to the point. You earned a subscriber
You should more of this kind of videos

Thank you
Great straightforward break down!
Thanks for the tutorial. Easy to follow for a beginner like me, and I was able to replicate the results exactly.
Simple and nice explanation :) thank you ! Finally I can use cloth simulation yay
Very good tutorial! Thank you! :)
I resized the cloth but every time I "simulate local" it resizes back to its initial size. Any idea why please Mike?
3970xRocks If you're trying to modify the geometry after the Cloth modifier is applied then you'll probably have to click the "Set Initial State" button after you resize. This tells the Cloth modifier that you have a new geometry state to start from instead of the one that the modifier stacks on top of.
Mike Woolf Thanks I'll try it - in the middle of a different project at the moment. My head is buzzing from taking in too many things at once :)
Perfect. Just what I needed.
great tutorial! thank youu
when i clicked on simulate local the plane just dropped down below the box.. so i disabled the gravity but now when i click on simulate local it doesnt do anything. pls help
DUDE DID YOU SOLVE THIS PROBLEM... I HAVE THE SAME ISSUE?
had this problem as well. all I found out is: if I set my cloth to "Default" instead of "Silk", "Cotton" etc. - it will work fine
How Crazy is this.. Is this the Simple way to do Flag : ua-cam.com/video/1_9lAYvc0xc/v-deo.html
thank you very much
Thanks buddy
Awesome,high 5!
Best Video!!!
thanks mike
thanx
Thnx alot
MmmHmm! Dat Edge...
Great tutorial!
