I know this video is 2 years old for me but I have to totally agree as I used Harry Potter in Spanish next to an English copy and struggled for 7 months to finish it. Then I was able to reread it again in 18 days with no English copy.

A woman from Kazakhstan sold her apartment to translate Harry Potter into Kazakh

Because of russian influencer on Kazakhstan Kazakh language is in weak position and not all people in Kazakhstan speak in this language. And they don't have book industry in their language.
Harry Potter did a lot for population Ukrainian and Kazakh languages. Many children start to read in Ukrainian because of Harry Potter

I get a copy of the first Harry Potter series in EVERY language I choose to learn. Some are easier than others to get.

This is a brilliant method that I love. Other authors that work well are Ken Follett (Pillars of the Earth) or Nicholas Sparks (The Notebook): simple language yet entertaining story.

I recently finished reading the whole Harry Potter series in German. While it checked four of the boxes for me, I was not all that familiar with the story. I had read the first book when it came out, but not the others. Still, it was great fun and I believe improved my German. One thing that is important for language learning with this series, is that the language gets a bit more complex with each book. I think this is because it is a series that is meant for children, and so it gets a bit more complex as their reading ability improves. Which also makes it perfect for language learning. (the books also get longer - Book 5 was a real hurdle, at over 1000 pages!).

This is so true, I'm literally fully fluent in Spanish, have a Peruvian girlfriend and have travelled south America speaking only Spanish and I 100% have harry potter (and Carlos Ponce the lector of the audiolibros) to thank

Before even knowing this was a thing others had thought about, I had planned to do this myself to improve my Spanish. I love the stories and because of my familiarity with it from reading the series a dozen times I felt that this would be the best way to teach myself.
Being Mexican American my spanish has deteriorated from mainly speaking english. Cool to see that was not the only one with this idea!

I did the same in spanish! Right now I mainly follow a comprehensible input approach through DreamingSpanish, however many followers of DS hesitate to read and only read far too late in my opinion. Great video!

You´re reading the brazilian version of harry potter, not Portugal's version which keeps the original names of the places and wizards

My thoughts exactly. It kinda defeats the purpose though the method because the familiarity element is removed

Easy to find.... Just bought entire series in English brand new for $65. Harry Potter in Portuguese can be found for over $80 by itself on ebay, sigh, and $50 on Amazon. So technically available, but i am not willing to pay for one book what i paid for all. I will keep looking....btw, this is how my mother self taught English 70 years ago. So, Olly does not own the idea of learning with stories, nor did he Invent it.

My only issue is it’s very vocab heavy. I love HP, but I struggled reading the first two chapters despite knowing what was going on. I ended up not enjoying it… for now. I’ll try again later when I’m a bit better. I think you need to be a solid A2 to enjoy it more… which I’m just not at despite 2 yrs of learning (albeit slowly)

Everything is vocab heavy, you just need to buckle up regardless of what you choose.

This method has suddenly blown up so videos like these are being revived by the algorithm.

As a native you actually read it pretty good in portuguese, your mistake was to relate it to portugal, c'mon boy, we all know that brazilian portuguese is the only one you should dive

I've got Harry Potter the Philosophers Stone in Welsh(a Maen yr Athronydd) Irish Gaeilge (agus an Órchloch) and Latin(et Philosophi Lapis). Great way to learn. 👍🧹🎓🎃
