Our horses are outside 24/7 and we blanket them when it's cold and/or rainy. We are lucky to live in a place where it's not extremely cold even in the winter. I don't understand why people keep arguing about blanketing when you should do it the way it fits your horse the best 😊

Blanketing is a religion! I live in MO. We start when it’s in the 50’s with a light sheet. 40’s they have a sheet/stable blanket. When it’s below those temps we follow a blanketing temp chart with different blanket weights needed. When it’s 20 and below that’s the most they get with a sheet, stable blanket, and a thicker to medium blanket with a hood. We also keep them under lights so they don’t grow a winter coat since we show. My show gelding has 6 different blankets we switch off/on depending on different things. Blanketing doesn’t prevent a winter coat... its due to the change in sun light throughout the day. However, it can help but won’t prevent it

With back leg straps I was taught to clip them to the same side but thread them though each other to stop them rubbing the horses legs. I find it interesting how people do something differently.

Horses will grow a winter coat regardless of how cold it is as their coat grows in while the daylight is getting shorter in the days. They do although puff their coat out when not rugged to give an appearance of a thicker coat.

    • @SkipandVictoria
      @SkipandVictoria 4 роки тому

^^^this. The only ways to truly change the actual coat growth is keeping them under lights or clipping them. Coat length is determined by genetics and length of daylight, not temperature 👍🏼

I always do the leg straps first, if the horse takes off and only the chest is done up, the rug can swing around the front legs or over the head and cause them to flip. If a horse takes off and only the leg straps are on, the rug will fall off

I don’t clip my horse but still blanket her. She’s very soft haha!, she’s 34 years old, retired, however drops weight very easy when she gets cold. Even in summer, when it’s like 13°c or below she is blanketed (if it’s not raining, she has a no neck blanket) she’s out 24/7 in summer. But I’m in England it still isn’t that warm 😂 A lot of people criticise me for rugging my horse up but they don’t understand it’s what best for her! If I didn’t, she drops weight so so fast and so easy and if she gets wet she just shakes. She’s 34 and still going strong so I must be doing something right!😂 Thanks for Making this vid Claire. I enjoyed it!!

This was so informational! I mean, of course I know the basics, but not all the complex stuff. Thanks Claire! Not a ton of people blanket at my barn because our horses grow THICK winter coats. But we do watch the sweating of course. I recently got a new lease horse so I’m gonna see how his coat turns out!
Who remembers that shirt from the “My boyfriend goes horse shopping for me” video? I saw it and immediately starting laughing from that video! Love you Claire! 💗💗

My horse grew a full on winter coat when it was 90 degrees out. A blanket is NOT going to stop a winter coat from coming in, its controlled by daylight hours.
Though I suppose in snow land that could be a bigger factor.
Just in case anyone is curious its typically 70s to 80s here in the winter and we put blankets on when it's in the 40s, just to keep their temps more stabilized. (Some variance depending on time of year of course)

When you put a horse blanket on it helps to fold the back of it inside out to the front, that way you can place the blanket slightly further up the withers, do up the front, then fold the back of the blanket back and softly pull it into position. This way you're not throwing the blanket up (potentially spooking a younger horse) and the hairs will lay flat since you won't have to pull the blanket forward or sideways to adjust the location of it anymore :)
Also if you can make the time for this, tie your surcingles (belly straps) loosely so that when you place the blanket on the horse they don't fall down and hit your horse's legs. Make sure they're done up far enough that there is no risk of your horse's leg then getting caught in them if she/he is lying down, approx. the width of your hand (10ish cm)
I don't know if this is just the way we do it in the UK but we don't cross the legs straps like this. We take the strap on the right, around the right leg and clip it into place. Then we take the left strap and cross it through the right strap, and then attach it to the left side. Vice versa. I've been taught this way because it apparently prevents rubbing and it otherwise the leg straps don't really work (?) I'm not completely sure though. I find leg straps kind of useless anyway lmao
    Great video :) !

When blanketing I always start with the leg straps. I've found, working with young horses, if you horse was go bolt or the wind was to move the blanket, the horse can't trip over the blanket and the wind can't drag the blanket over the horses head

You shouldn’t get a horse when you don’t even know what your doing.
You should know everything 100% and take lessons for some years before buying, that way you know how to ride and also you know exactly how to take care of it. Some people don’t know this but it’s so important to have lots and lots of knowledge on horses if your going to own one. And if your not 100% on everything then it’s really good to have a person around that knows what they’re doing.

Do you body clip your horse? I show a lot throughout the winter in a heated facility and he’s grown his fuzzy winter coat already. Please anyone feel free to respond . He’s a Belgian warm blood and he’s warm bodied to start

Personally, I am against blanketing, and clipping, but there are good reasons for it.
If you blanket a horse they won’t grow a coat, which come naturally to them, but if you work your horse hard and it sweats, it will be wet and get hypothermia. My horse is in the field a lot, but I do lots of work with him sometimes. As a western rider, I do a lot different stuff that English riders. So I don’t clip or blanket him. Blanketing and clipping is okay if you are working your horse a lot.

To your blanketing horses that can’t keep weight on easily, that’s what we do for our 30 year old pony and our 27 year old mare because they have had trouble (all year) keeping weight on and last year was horrible for the pony because he was sick and couldn’t eat and when winter rolled around.... it was hell

Dang putting all these factors in. I'm a noob and want a horse one day. I suppose it's fine to get a young horse as well as it is used to all of this stuff already correct. I mean I don't even know what the purpose of a stable is, only to know people leave the horse their and go out and party or relax while the horse is in one place, as well as for shelter from storms. Anyway. Thanks!! I think i'd like a horse that's used to both, but just would know exactly what to do yet in the winter time. If you don't know anything about taking care of a horse but have the money, and know the basics. Do you want to hook up with a vet for your first purchase and she or he will then tell you exactly what to do!? Thanks. Confusing. lol that's just me

It's always difficult to blanket my horse. She has that typical long TB back so she needs a big size, but when I get a bigger size the belly straps and legs straps don't fit, even after they are as small as I can get them. Any solutions or do I just need to try harder on shortening the straps?
