Instead of pulling it up enough to drill another weep hole just wrap some insulation around the pipe a couple feet up before you box it in. There will be enough heat coming up the casing to keep it from freezing in the winter! Saves time and effort!
Hey Josh! That pump will be a lot of fun in the hot Summer, when someone puts their hand over the nozzle... and the cold water eventually sprays out the top! That old joke just NEVER gets old! Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!
I had a friend at work that told me about Bison Pumps probably 10 years ago and how good they were. I've always wanted the one that goes on top of your well and works when your electric is out, and you can hand fill your pressure tank in the house. Basically, just like the one you have.
That is one handsome... pump! The hand pump I grew up with was a cast iron, bulgy and ugly. The handle is heavy steel pipe that whacks you on the face or the chin if it slips your grip while the pump is full with water. As a child I liked to hang on to the handle while my dad pumps. Kind of like see saw. And I liked the sound it made. LOL.
❤FYI❤They make shorter set screws in 1/2" or 3/4" set screws for the base. So it won't catch on or scratch someone or get snagged on anything. ❤❤❤GREAT VIDEO❤❤❤❤
Can't wait to see the finished outdoors kitchen, its already been looking amazing, but this water pump's going to make it look even more amazing! Maybe once the well's finished, we can see Mrs Stoney Ridge have a slightly higher step on the handle end of the pump so she won't have to stretch so much when the handle is at the top of its swing?
so funny how many comments on her having to reach up high to get the pump handle......we have little step stools all over the house and farm for her...she's a short on lol
That wheep hole you drilled at 24inches will be fine and does not need to be below frost line as the heat from the well will keep it from freezing on the inside of the well its self.
right in time! i just started researching wells because id like another on my land. very informative. thanks josh and ms. stoney ridge.... you guys are a great team.
Everything is looking great! 👍 Luckily, we still have well water on our Citrus County property, and I've been wanting an hand pump installed. Thanks for the tips! 🙏🏻💪🙏🏻
@Stoney Ridge Farmer WOOOOOOO! That went from sounding like a hog to sounding like the world's most expensive PVC/Stainless Steel theft-proof Didgeridoo!
Great looking pump, thanks for the install video. Hope it gives you many years service. Maybe a smaller slotted tool, similar to the one that holds the pipe up would be handy to hold the pump rod below the jam nut, keeping it raised?
Looks like a very well-made pump, Josh. The black pipe that comes out of the ground. I was wondering why they couldn’t have been a little shorter? Also, I noticed that you had a little bit of a ramp going up to the concrete pad and where the width of the ramp has like a 2 inch lip on it. Do you think you need to paint some contrasting colors on the concrete to avoid a tripping hazard? Have fun two.
great questions....so the well casing is up at about 24 inches tall.....this might be a bit harder for a shorter person to pump water without standing on a stool, however it also makes it quite child proof, keeping kids from hanging all over it is important...the casing is PVC and will break if it's beat on too hard. The pump needs to be high enough that I can pull a cart under it with pots to fill with water at some point also. Now....as for the "curb" ....my concrete guy and I talked extensively about the tripping hazard. The contrast of the dark stamped concrete and the lighter non stamped is pretty significant. I think if we had an event on the farm, we'd probably rope off the curbing or put some flower pots around it so folks only walked up the ramp. Concrete pour vid is coming tomorrow morning....you'll get a little more info in that video
That's a nice looking well hand pump..... Only thing i would have done differently is dont have it that high up, cut that black tube fown a foot and it will looks more esthetic and MSR also can reach it without standing on het toes.....
I’m so happy you guys are doing well together you make a great couple ❤ Also my wife would like to know where Mrs. Stoney Ridge were she got that shirt with the arms that covered here hands
Did you take into account the 24" or so inches of the well casing when you drilled the weep hole to make sure the hole was down far enough? Nice project Josh!! LOL... I hadn't watched the whole video before I wrote this comment... haha You figured it out.... 🙂 Hopefully having two weep holes in the pipe won't kill your pumping pressure too much at the tap.
yeppers...behind the scenes all this was done over 3-4 weeks...remember when we were just cutting the trees away so we could build the shop? Crazy huh!
you need to know your static water level.....how close to the surface the water comes up. For the rest I'd use that link in the video description to Bison Pumps and see what the website says on all the specs
Josh I think while you have to drill a new hole maybe you should cut the well pipe off some so the pump handle will be lower for the person pumping and the water lower to the bucket
few reasons for the height...one....I'm tall and odds are I'll be doing the work, 2 we'll be rolling cooking carts up under the well head for water, 3 at this height children will be less likely to hang and play on it
Excellent video; thanks for the content. Will this hand pump work if you have no electricity? What did this project cost from the well drilling 400'+, water pressure tank, bison pump, + incidentals? I ask because I live in FL and have a deep well for all my water, and I am looking for a way to access the water without electricity. And doing it short of drilling a second designated well strictly for a hand well pump - if that makes any sense. Thank you.
@@charlesbentley2934 Charles, I don't believe there is a hand pump made that can draw water from over 300', but I could be wrong. This system, I think, requires the well pump to push the water from the water table to 46' where the Bison pump can draw water from. So I think but wanted to confirm with SRF if that is true or if in an emergency situation, the hand pump could draw water without electricity/functioning well pump.
@connect741 I had the understanding that he punched a well 300 feet but that the static water height was 24-26 feet. He put his pump down 40 feet, therefore he should have 16+- feet of water in the pipe that he can manually pump. In case of power outage he can manually pump to his mega shop also. The water vein may be deeper but I'm guessing it recharges the Well to maintain static level. This is only my interpretation of what I think I heard in the video.
yes....that's the whole point of it...it's a hand pump that uses no electricity...you can hook it right up to your home and pump into your home if needed
I understand that but hand pump physics can't draw water from a 300' foot well, because it requires pressure way in excess of even the best hand pump. For example - without the well pressure tank the water at the bottom of the well casing will not be able to rise to the 46" where the hand pump can bring the water up the rest of the way. Therefore, without the electric pressure tank the Bison hand pump won't work. Does that sound about right? @@StoneyRidgeFarmer
You are talking about a shallow well pump. Those have the mechanisms at the top and must create a vacuum to pull the water up. His is a deep well pump which has the mechanism at the bottom and is connected by a long rod (he connected it in sections). The pump at the bottom actually lifts the water rather than vacuum the water. Due to the mechanics, it will not drain itself unless debris gets in the check valve. The weight of the water is the reason for the long handle.
What’s weird, is that you had to drill down 460’, in order to get to water, that has a head that’s only 20’ below the surface. Now I wonder, where is that head, anywhere else on the farm?
that's the water table my friend....all of the other wells are about the same. The hydrologic pressure under the ground where we hit water will push up to that height every time....it's just our water table here
no the rope to the pipe while lowering into well do that when cutting ✂️ at top and attach to eye bolt so it it did slip in not go to far in and easy to retrieve
How tall is Ms, Stoney Ridge? She looks so petite next to you. I know you are a tall dude. You guys make a nice looking couple. Best wishes for the future.
Bison pumps are over $ 4000 how come it is so overpriced you have to to be rich to afford a hand pump crazy. They also should throw in tools to put it together for the price they are asking for.
quality cost money my friend....plenty of cheap china garbage out there...we all try to preach "buy American" but when we see what it costs to engineer and build in America...we often cringe at the price. The well cost $15,000....that's the big expense here
Why on earth would PVC not last? You've gotta share it with us....if we used galvanized it would weigh 300lbs and have the potential for corrosion right?
Great video. Very educational. Thanks for sharing. What is the smallest well casing pipe you can have for the hand pump to slide down
Great question...that's a bison pump question...check out the link in the description and they can tell ya everything you'll need and all the specs

Hey Josh thank you for the video you and mrs. Stony ridge did a great job woo
Very nice pump
thanks for the video. the well pump looks great. have a great day
Very Cool Pump guys ❗️
That was really nerve wracking for me...phew...I'm happy that's in. Such a beautiful piece Josh
Same concept as the water pump behind my grandparents house I played with a little bit in about 1974.
yeppers! That's it....most of those old pumps are "shallow well" pumps that don't have all this pipe and such, but very very similar for sure!
I installed on last spring. Works great and very well made. 👍🏼
This video got me all pumped up
Great video! What a beautiful stainless steel pump!
awesome content as always.thanks for sharing and taking us along.
Love the hog noise, Josh! The outdoor kitchen is really coming together.
That’s awesome. Makes a good case for power outages. Makes me think about adding this to my house well.
Still trying to figure out where that sound came from but no confessions, but that smile usually gives it away. Such is life on a farm.

When you build the well surround leave access to your well wire LB coupling at well casing (future repairs)

A big stone to stand on like a giant cement block or even a pad.
My well has leak at casing. Ground gets wet when I run it. I only use well for watering outside. I have city water too.

I think it sounds like a bull frog pump. But I do hear a bison style growl sound too.
