Our choir had a concert last week in the Abbey. It is astonishingly beautiful acoustically, architecturally and historically. Last time I can only spend very little of time walking around since I have to prepare for the concert, I'll definitely find time to come to visit again.

I just found your channel. And I am obsessed, obsessed with Britain, obsessed with England, Scotland. But more so I’m Obsessed with the Cotswolds. In my opinion the most beautiful country on earth. My ancestors homeland. I live in the United States but I feel my heart strings pulling at this beautiful country. I can’t afford to visit, but your channel has given me a chance to do that through you I am so thankful for your channel. I am literally in tears with every episode of this beautiful place. How long to live there….. may be in another life. You are so blessed to be able to enjoy and share this beautiful country with us. Thank you so much, and I think you’re wonderful.

Jade, you speak for me too.I am american have lived all my life in the US and have, from an early age been obsessed with all things English and the history of Britannia pre Roman occupation and beyond. Shakespeare desbribed it as “This Sceptered Isle” and even Hitler is reported to have said that he would pluck it like an emerald set in a silver sea, or maybe Shakespeare said it first. .You and I both have that longing for the land, the Welsh call it hiraeth , I am not sure of the spelling..but my Father’s ancestors were from Wales. and he would say that he longed for a place he had never been. he also said that the folks of the British Isles seemed to be cold and reserved, like the climate , but inside there was great love and warmth of soul.. You mentioned maybe you could live there in another life? Perhaps we have lived there in the past, or as the Native American elders teach, we are all born into this earth carrying with us the “blessed burden of the blood of our ancestors”, who watch over us from their distant fires (the stars in the night sky) and take pride in our lives well lived and send us help in dreams..Perhaps our DNA carries ancestral memories of England.? Robin so eloquently evokes the sorrow and outrage felt even 500 years later, at the destruction and culltural terrorism of the Abbeys and churches set in motion by Henry VIII. I am still amazed that Henry was not struck by lightning for his evil deeds. I love this channel and look forward to more adventures exploring our heritage. from NW WA state 🌲🌲🇺🇸

Tewkesbury is a wonderful place even if its not in the Cotswolds , there is a book written in the 1930's called a portrait of elmbury by John Moore , his child hood up to the war , growing up in and around Tewkesbury , many who enjoy this web site will I am sure enjoy the book .
Thank you Robin for your great series of one of England's most lovely areas !

Thanks for the tip! I found a second hand paperback edition and it's such an evocative description of the town, it's people, their way of life and the countryside! There is more description of pubs than churches - which nicely complements this channel's focus!

@@TheCotswoldExplorer Hello from an admirer of your talents. I love your channel and recently enjoyed a ghost story read to us by you . I would like to request that for the upcoming Fall season you would read my favorite and frightening supernatural tale by M.R. James, “Canon Alberic’s Scrapbook”. IIt has been years since I read it and I have never been able to forget it. The story of the miraculous escape from destruction of Tewkesbury Abbey. brought the M R James tale back to my mind. .Please, if you have the time in your schedule, consider my request. i don’t advise viewers to read it alone or at night, but if we all can gather together in cyberspace and listen to your voice, we will feel safe. Thank you.

Yes, first time I visited the Abbey was 64 years ago with my parents, and we also took in nearby Oddas chapel and Deerhurst church, both being of Anglo-Saxon date and the chapel the much the latest to be built, as the consecration/dedication stone testifies, just a decade or two before the Conquest. We were shown round the church by a Miss Margaret, a very elderly lady dressed in a long black coat, I would guess she would have been born around 1880.

I know that 450£ was a lot of money in 1542 and who knows how hard and long the citizens of Tewksbury had to work to scrape together that much money. It is testament to their devotion not so much to the old religion (perhaps) as to what that building meant to them as a community. That’s amazing.
