Since there seems to be no central dispatcher and these run more like buses than trains, do the drivers have to get out and throw the points to go in a different direction if you're going a different direction than the tram right in front of you?

On the old trams they have to, but on the modern ones they have a system that allows the driver to automatically change the points from the tram cabin.

They are the safest means of transportation in Lisbon and have been so for almost 100 years.
I was born and live in Lisbon , so I know what I am speaking about.

In most European countries, trams and other rail transport are privileged over cars and vans - so the Transit driver should have stayed out of the tram's way in the first place.
I lived in Lisbon for a couple of months and always found the tram drivers very considerate and sensible, taking no risks even when some real idiots cut into their way.
I'm pretty sentimental about the old trams so I'm glad they keep the old ones running along with the modern ones.
In fact, they even decided to scrap newer ones (dating from the 50s or so), keep these ones alive instead and discreetly modernized them (more power, better breaks and modern doors).
