I stayed in the Alfama last August for my first ever trip to Lisbon. I’m from the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) and have Portuguese parents (from the Azores). That first trip for me was more than just a cool place to be, but a discovery and a huge expansion of appreciation for the culture that my parents came from. I made a point of staying in the Alfama, not only to experience its narrow streets, but to listen to fado, the music my parents would listen to on the radio at the end of a long work week. Hearing the “fadistas” in the distance while I layed my head down after a long day on foot took me back to the sounds of my childhood. I learned so much, and I’ve developed a full blown love affair with the culture of my parents and ancestors. The history, the architecture, the language, the music, the food, and most importantly, the people. I will be back, not just to see Lisbon, but to see more of Portugal itself. The biggest emotional impact for me, was the Sé - Lisbon’s Cathedral. Once I toured it, and found out how old it was, I found myself wanting everyday to walk by it, touch its walls, and whenever possible, eat a meal within its shadow. Thanks for bringing back great memories of that trip, and I intend to make many more.
Thanks so much for sharing...it's wonderful to get the perspective of someone with roots in Portugal. Lisbon a really beautiful city -- I'm not surprised that so many people fall in love with their first visit. I hope you get to have many more wonderful trips there.
Welcome to Lisbon! My husband and I are big fans of yours--and fellow travelers. We also have sold or donated almost everything we own to slow travel the world. We're also "living" in Alfama at the moment. We love it. Hope to see you as we're out and about (and I will try not to be too much of a fan girl).
I LOVE your apartment this time! But yes, as someone said below, Lisbon has hills and stairs. Its sidewalks are made of marble cubes and when it rains, they're very slippery. It can be done - I use a cane - but you have to pay attention all the time.
Isn't it so charming! It's been such a great spot. But yes, we have to be very mindful everywhere we go...the sidewalks can be very difficult to manage.
Your dogs are extremely well behaved. I love the look on his face when you were carrying him. His eyes looked like he was so relaxed and could sleep in your hands. Lisbon looks like such a great place to explore. Your Airbnb had a great location and so much character. You always find the best places. Now, I understand why so many people love to visit Portugal.
They're pretty good most of the time...but not always 😂 We certainly did a lot of looking to find this Airbnb. It was a relief when we arrived and discovered that it was just as nice as we were hoping!
Loved the video as always! I have my sister watching and following you now. I am so happy for you both that you finally got to Portugal after missing it previously. May your stay and experience be absolutely perfect!
I love staying in Lisbon, it has everything you could want for a break or holiday. You can get the train down the river to Cascais for a real beach resort.
There's lots to love about Lisbon and the surrounding region. We've had a couple excursions to nearby towns and found that it's a lovely part of the world. 😊
just found you two as we search for where to explore/stay in Lisbon! great video, just subscribed!! any chance you are open to sending a link to the airbnb where you stayed in Alfama?
So glad you enjoyed it! Here's the link to the Airbnb: www.airbnb.com/rooms/22419451 We also have a blog post for Lisbon with more info: ourfreedomyears.com/5-tips-for-experiencing-beautiful-lisbon-without-the-crowds/
Hello (again) from Cefalu, Sicily! We stayed in Lisbon for a bit and then made our way to Cascais for the duration of our visit. Totally relate to Toronto food reference. I find the same thing here in Sicily but nothing beats the OG.💕
Loved the video. Hoping there's more to come from Lisboa! One "miradouro" that is usually not crowded and has excelent views is Miradouro do Recolhimento (should open at 10), close to the castle. If you're planning on visiting the Castle you should definitely go there and also to the Church of Santa Cruz do Castelo's bell tower. I do guided photo tours here in Lisbon. Get in touch if this is something that may interest you. :) Have a great time in Lisbon!
We've got one more video from Lisbon coming your way soon! It's a beautiful city...we've really enjoyed getting to know it. Thanks for the tip about the miradouro! 😊
locals cannot afford those new refurbished buildings... no powdered sugar, no cinnamon for the natas :( good job getting the meia de leite :) the ginjinha bottles do look home made, probably the same way my mother makes it, sour cherries, brandy, sugar and cinnamon sticks!
I heard that Westerners eat hamburgers, fries, fried chicken, Coke, sandwiches, coffee, pasta, pizza, hotdog , steak cereal, bread, and milk for three meals a day. Is this true? Or do Americans and Europeans eat differently?
Your apartment is amazing and great location. It is my dream to live above a cafe with croissant mistos and natas every day! Thanks for reviving some great memories.

Well, please do say hello if you see us in the neighbourhood! We're always happy to meet fellow travelers. 😊
The pastel de nata and Portuguese coffee look delicious 🙂 Cheers from Canada!
Always nice to hear from a fellow Canadian! 😊

You ladies did a fantastic job touring Lisbon and sharing your journey with the rest of us. Thanks so much :-)
Tom from NJ, USA
Great to hear that you enjoyed the video! We had a lot of fun in Portugal.
I loved staying in Alfama! Of course you have to get pasteis de nata! It’s such a fun place to walk around.
We've really loved being in this neighbourhood! Although I can imagine that it gets super busy in the summer.
Loved the video as always! I have my sister watching and following you now. I am so happy for you both that you finally got to Portugal after missing it previously. May your stay and experience be absolutely perfect!
So nice - we're always happy to have another viewer! 😊 We're loving Portugal...it was certainly worth the wait.

Lisbon is an absolute gem of a city. To be honest the whole of Portugal is amazing. I’ve been there over 15 times and every time it just gets better.
How wonderful to have visited so many times! By now you must have a really amazing list of the best things to see and do. 😊

We've heard Cascais is beautiful...hopefully we'll be able to sneak in a visit before we head off to Madeira! 😊
Enjoyed your video and neighbourhoods im familiar with. Your shout out to Toronto was noticed. Enjoy your time there🇨🇦
Great to hear! Glad you enjoyed the video 😊

I agree. “Meia de leite” would be the cappuccino without the fency foam whereas “galão” is also sort of Latte maquiato.
The meia de leite has since become my new favourite morning drink 😊
locals cannot afford those new refurbished buildings...
no powdered sugar, no cinnamon for the natas :(
good job getting the meia de leite :)

Could you post a link to your airbnb….it looks perfect and we will be in Lisbon next year
Here's the listing: www.airbnb.com/rooms/22419451 Good luck with your planning!
If anyone who is older or not fit enough to walk up and down the stairs and slippery sidewalks, Lisboa isn't for you.
So true! We seen a lot of people take a tumble while we've been here. It's very important to watch your step in these streets.
There are Turk Turk tours for those people but Lisbon is to great to miss out on. Then there are the trams too.
@rossgossman6530 yes. But I am thinking of those who live in Lisboa on daily basis. It will get old especially for older people with difficulties.
o sujinho faz parte da linda paisagem, faz parte...
😊

I'm not really sure...we're Canadian! 😊
yeah, let's hope CLARION doesn't come in & do the 'updating'--i only saw painter's blue tape so so far so good. @8.24 gillian ROCKIN' it!! . . .
Nothing like a shot of cherry liqueur first thing in the morning! 😂
i felt like that was 'an exception' for you!
do you have the name of the air bnb you stayed at looks great
Here it is... www.airbnb.com/rooms/22419451
quem quizer viver como se vivia no seculo dezoiro venha a lisboa, cidades limpinhas e asseadas está o mundo cheio...
Lisboa é uma cidade linda 😊
Your apartment is amazing and great location. It is my dream to live above a cafe with croissant mistos and natas every day! Thanks for reviving some great memories.
We'll be sad to say goodbye to this lovely spot -- it's been a great base for the past month. 😊
