Dalton Mine Explore - Old Dale (Virginia Dale) Mining District - Off road Jeep and Hike

- After visiting nearly every mine in this large mining district, we finally made our way to the remote Dalton Mine. Actually, we started this explore above the Maria Mine at an unnamed prospect. There, we found the remains of an old camp with a tent pad and good-sized can dump. We hiked up to the underground workings, which were interesting enough to make a fun explore. After that, we made the several mile drive over to the Dalton Mine area. The road up the mountain was rough, so we hiked the last mile or two up to the workings. Once there, we found a large waste rock pile, a very big vertical shaft, a tunnel, and drifts. There are also the ruins of a small mill, tent sites, cans, and other mine related artifacts. It was another fun day of mine exploring, and we hope that you enjoy the video.

I looked up the Beer can, nearest date I found was mid 50’s, and that mining district goes back to the late 1800s. Thank you very much for the video.
Thanks for that information on the can. It is a pretty old mining district. It was once part of Joshua Tree National Park but was returned back to a mining district that is still used today by prospectors. Thanks for the comment!👌😁

That can was pretty cool with all the different sports represented on it. That shaft is interesting. The problem with those big un-lined shafts is that rocks want to fall on you when you try to rope down them. It's almost impossible to keep from knocking stuff down onto yourself. 👍😁

That's the desert for you. Cold one minute and hot the next. Sometimes, we are hot on the side of your body that the sun is hitting and cold on the shady side at the same time. Thanksgiving was good, and we hope yours was, too. That sports can was pretty cool!👍😁

Hello Tom and Juilie i find it interesting when finding old can dimps and the way the cans are opened like some of the cans with a butterfly technique of opening most likely with a pocket knife .Nice hike.lots of openings ⛏️

I wonder if the old miners carried magnets to remove metal filings from their peaches. Thank you for the temperature checks. I find them interesting the deeper you go. Did I see half a union instead of half an onion..lol.

Thanks Tom and Julie for sharing your adventures with us! The piece of wood at 6:50 might be the block used with one of those adjustable steel columns to which the miners mounted their drills. (I can't remember what those columns are called.) The round mark is the impression left by either the foot or the head of the column. Happy Thanksgiving holiday weekend!
I believe you're exactly correct. They are called a column drill. There is also a jack leg drill, but I think that piece of wood was used with a column drill. We had a good Thanksgiving and hope you did, too. Thanks for watching and commenting!👍😁

I'm thinking that this was a successful mine with that huge shaft on that wide mineral vein. Some of the ore that was laying on the top of the waste rock pile looked pretty good. The tailings below the round mill tell part of the story, too. At least they found something to mill. Thanks for the comment, Ed!👌😁

All-American extra dry Beer was made by Atlas Brewing Company, Chicago IL in the 1950's apparently.
There is a bit of a collector market for pristine cans for that brand today - like $150 for a nice one.

I found some of those coyote gourds a few years back and let it dry out and kept the seeds and this spring I dumped a bunch of them in the ground and covered them up. Nothing ever came of them UNTIL Hurricane Hilary came through this past August and every single seed came up through the ground at once in a big clump.

Nice mine explore. You commented that the daylight was a shaft, but unless I missed it you never showed, or commented on how far it was to the top. It didn't look like it was very deep, but clearly too much to climb out of. Thanks for another great video.

What a spectacular can dump you found. Few have been that large. I looked up that all-american extra dry and found enough 12oz examples. No quarts though. $25-$200 for fair to fine condition. Scarce and sll the 12oz I found were 1960.

You're welcome! That's one of those big loose and unlined shafts that are very difficult to rope down safely. A shaft like that with no timbers lining it will want to shower you with rocks. I almost got my arm broken in a shaft like that a couple of years ago when a fairly small rock about the size of a tangerine feel from about 80 feet and hit me just above the wrist. I can only imagine what a cantaloupe sized rock would feel like. I would like to see what's down there, though. Thanks for the comment!👍😁

6:54 Jack Led shim block, I recognize the pattern pressed into it. 7:23 More than likely it is Metagabbro Greenstone or just Green Stone and tends to be rich in Free-Mill Gold and Copper so no need for Mercury or Chemical Extraction, just Mine, Crush and Separate the Gold and Copper out, easy peasy 🤠One time at my Lode Mine my Can Opener Broke so no choice but to use my hunting knife. I was just in that district two weeks ago. Lots of great things to see. Have you ever run across a mine with a large boulder out front labeled with "C'est La Vie"? I went to the mine in the 70's and think it was in that district.
It is a fun mining district. We have been to almost every mine there over the years. I don't recall the boulder you mentioned. That doesn't mean that it's not there. Thanks for the comment!👌😁

At 1:19 and 2:08, I have found many cans opened that way in WWII Desert Training Center camp sites. The soldiers used their bayonets. It appears you can see the (cook?) tent site behind the can dump at 3:16. All American beer was made from 1896 to 1962 by the Atlas Brewing Company, Chicago. Atlas went BK in 1940, but hung on until 1962.
Hi Francis. Maybe there were some soldiers turned miners in this camp. Yes, there were at least a couple of tent sites here. I didn't see any lumber that looked like wood cabin remnants. My thought too: soldiers turned miners. While researching the beer can, I saw a few whole, good examples. None of the faces were detailed enough to reveal who they might be so just generic people. @@TomandJulieMineExploring

I notice this video is a bit grainy. I looked at the quality settings and the highest resolution I am seeing is 480p. Sometimes when videos are new, the resolution isn't that great until youtube has a chance to process it further. I'll check it again later today to see if there is any improvement.
Hi Larry. This one never processed up to full HD the way it was uploaded. It happens very rarely and is a UA-cam glitch. Had I caught it earlier, I could have reuploaded it. Unfortunately, I don't have the means to do that currently. Sorry about that.😠

Oh that stinks. You're the second person to mention that. Once in a great while, UA-cam fails to process a video up to full HD the way it was uploaded. This was unloaded at my normal resolution, and apparently, it never processed correctly. This is only the second or third time it's happened in over 800 uploads. That new math is really something. Another fun day, I've wanted to do some exploring out there, I wonder why some mines are warmer than others?
Hi Peter. It is a fun place to explore and do some offroading. I believe that some mines have active geothermal areas in them. That is how the minerals got there in the first place. Hot water from deep in the Earth pushed up through a fissure and left the minerals and metals behind. The temperature in some mines can change quickly. Thanks for the comment!👍😁

That old can behind the muck sheet, was a real find. I'm guessing that second mine, was more of an open cut, in it's later stages, judging by that breakage in the addit>
Yes, looking behind the heavy muck sheet was worth it. I wonder how long it will be before the next person is curious enough to look there. You're probably correct about the open cut. Hi Richard. Those big shafts with a lot of loose rocks and no timber lining are tough to rope down safely. Even if you can anchor your rope in the middle of the shaft at the top, there is usually some angle to them, and the rope eventually ends up hitting the edge and sending rocks down. Ouch! Hi Robert. We usually have so much gear already that we can hardly carry it. I do like some of the drone views, though. Plus, that soft top Jeep doesn't lock. We have a locking steel box in the back of the Jeep where the back seat would be, but it's already full of ropes and climbing gear. Thanks for the comment!👌😁

Sadly your video is posted at 480p which removes so much detail that the name of the brewer or distributor cannot be read, at least not with the imaging applications that I have. All American Extra Dry was distributed by a number of companies. The largest of which, and perhaps the original, may have been the former Drewrys Brewery in South Bend. The can is not earlier than 1940.
I know that stinks. It seems that some viewers are getting better resolutions than others. It was uploaded in a fairly high-quality format. I have had only a couple of problems over the years and over 800 videos where a UA-cam glitch prevents the video from processing up to the full quality in which it was uploaded. When that happens, nobody gets high resolution, so I'm not sure what's going on with this video.

I don't think they were worried about littering back in the day. Nowadays, you would be required to perform reclamation on the land when you were done mining. The cans aren't so bad as some of the chemicals, solvents, and oils that were used are. Thanks for the comment, Robert!👍😁

Hi Scott. The road to the OK coming from the northerly direction (New Dale) has always been pretty rough when you start to climb. Of course, that's relative depending on your vehicle's capabilities. Coming from the south is a somewhat better road, or at least it used to be, but you have to make the long jaunt through the National Park to come that way. I have always been able to scrape my way up there in the Jeep. Thanks for the comment!👌😁

This is the best quality that I can reasonably make. Producing videos while out in the desert with limited connectivity is not easy. 4K is not an option.

I think it was the very rare UA-cam glitch where a particular video doesn't process up to the full quality it was uploaded in. I've had it happen a couple other times and have re-uploaded them. I'm currently unable to do that.
