Hi Jemma - makes the buttonhole more sturdy either when adding buttonholes to a loose knit fabric or something with an open weave like a hand-knit sweater (use along with interfacing). Can also be used when stitching a long buttonhole the cord adds reinforcement so it doesn’t gape or sag; or in really heavy wool fabrics like military formal uniforms or heavy men’s winter coat otherwise the buttonhole doesn’t last and frays. I have also seen it used as a couture touch when using a metallic thread to make them more “puffy” so the buttonhole stood out. Not sure I would want to use regular thread, add wax and then zig zag over. I’d prefer to use an embroidery Pearl cotton or fine cord. This is a great tip to use in a pinch and could only use what you had on hand. ❤️ from 🇨🇦❤️ Great question.
Laura Kelly explained it perfectly. I hope that helps. I also have a 'how to do a corded buttonhole video' :-)) ua-cam.com/video/LfNwLTuKaTY/v-deo.html where I explain more about why you would do a corded buttonhole. Aneka x
Yes you can get some metallic thread, or some embroidery style thread. It can look nice glinting through the buttonhole stitching. Example: www.spotlightstores.com/sewing-fabrics/haberdashery/sewing-threads/gutermann-sulky-metallic-thread/BP80158452
This was great. Great info on how to use the foot to hold the cord in place.
Glad it was helpful!
😲 Wow...I didn't even know about that foot for my Bernina. Thanks Aneka!
Glad I could help.
Thank you
Thank you.
Totally newbie, when do we need to do this?
Yes of course, you will be made to sew. You will beeeeee. (kidding)
