Last time I heard this song, it was being sung by a barbershop quartet at Disneyland. Thanks to Red Barrels, I immediately thought of some *lovely* images and died inside.
This scene and the song are from "Show Business" a 1944 movie musical film starring Eddie Cantor, George Murphy, Joan Davis, Nancy Kelly, and Constance Moore. OldTimer
Unfortunately his career as a stage actor was short-lived. The production was closed after he tortured and killed the other actors, stand-ins, director, scriptwriter, stagehand, box office clerk, and even the janitor.
Enjoyed that! I've only ever heard the song's tune played (in Trad. Jazz style), so it was really nice to hear the words for the first time. Thanks for posting.
Interesting source, the film Show Business {1944}. Under the mustace on the left is Eddie Cantor, nearf the end of his film career but with more time in radio and tv ahead. On the right is "Didn't You Used to be" George Murphy, long before he became a US Senator. Joan Davis, whose "I Marrid Joan" would make 1 of tv's first successful comediennes is next to Cantor. The other lady, Nancy Kelly, was a former child actress. Her first film was in 1926 and last credit was in 1977.
Thanks for the information. I had no idea, as a kid, that the comedienne Joan Davis on the "I Married Joan" show had a successful career in movies, song and dance. What talent the stars of the Golden Age had! I can still recall the show theme...I married Joan, what a girl, what a whirl, what a wife...I married Joan....etc. Great nostalgia.
I can't think of something innocent about this song because Eddie Gluskin keeps popping up in my mind! Nonetheless this song is good, thanks red barrels
I'll never look at this song the same way again. Dammit Eddie Gluskin!

I know the fairer sex often endure the same wounds with more suffering, but you really need to make an effort.

By golly, that's catchy. :-)
Eddie Cantor! and George Murphy?
I recognize Joan Davis but who is the other woman?
I don't know why, but George Murphy in that mustache looks like a character from Meet the Robinsons... it's so weird...
