+Rockin Pip with a slab house I would start no higher than the top of the slab. With a block foundation I would stay 2" down from the top of the block to keep moisture from the wood joists.

You are demonstrating that the soil be about house floor level. I think dirt must be at least 6 inches below floor level.
i would think that at the house youd want dirt below your slab or foundation and work down from that
